Great location
100% of recent guests gave the location a 5-star rating.
The studio is self contained and independent from the main house on a 2.5 acre lifestyle property, with your own separate driveway. Less than a year old, the studio is modern and comfortable and the furnishings new and picked out to create a restful, comfortable space. There is a small separate bedroom with queen bed, bathroom, large lounge and dining, and small kitchenette. The property is pretty with many large trees, a stream, boardwalk, pond, pergola with hammocks, animals, and native birds.

The space
Plentiful indoor plants bring life into clean white walls; luxurious blue, grey, and green fabrics balance vintage wooden furniture. The separate bedroom is very small but has a queensize bed with 600 threadcount sheets and enough pillows to either find the perfect one to sleep on, or to stack around for a cup of coffee and reading a book in the morning. A large mirror brings in light and reflections of the willow tree and resident birdlife.

Back in the lounge/kitchen/dining space, a 40” smart TV gives you access to Netflix, TVNZ on demand, YouTube etc. Comfortable couches, ambient lighting options, heatpump, and unlimited fibre internet make for a good quiet night in option. The dining table doubles as a remote working space with calming views out to your front lawn - in late winter the first bulbs will emerge around several large specimen trees. There is a small balcony for breakfast – a fresh baked loaf of bread and eggs from the beloved chickens on the property, fresh local coffee, and if in season (/not devoured by local birds), fruit from the gardens (in summer this includes blueberries).

A small kitchenette provides the very basics, a small silent bar fridge, hot plate, pot and pan, jug and toaster. A BBQ can be made available on request. The bathroom is modern and the shower pressure is fantastic.

On the property, there is the enthusiastic start to many lifestyle block projects – from waterway restoration to various vegetable and ornamental gardens. The hosts are often available to talk about the transition from city life to the good life and the often funny mishaps of learning to look after a piece of land. A bridge over a stream leads to sheep that think they are goats on one side of the property, on the other side there is a boardwalk over the pond to a pergola with hammocks available on sunny days. On the small hill is the chook house and resident hens. On request, feeding the animals and collecting eggs is possible. A friendly dog who takes her job of staring at the sheep and chickens very seriously may come to say hi unless you prefer she keeps away from you during your stay which can be easily arranged

Where you’ll be

Nikau Valley, Wellington, New Zealand

If you are up at dawn, be prepared for the dawn chorus of native birds once you open the doors. There are multiple beautiful walks you can go on from the doorstep to either get amazing views of Kapiti island, undisturbed nikau forest, or explore the reserve and native bush. Once you want to leave, it is only 4 minute drive to the nearest supermarket, the train station, and around 10 minutes to either Waikanae or Paraparaumu beach and their fantastic artisan markets.

During your stay

Separate driveway and parking right next to the studio means a good amount of independence. The house is visible from the studio (~30m distance) but once inside, sheer curtains on the windows facing the house ensure privacy is maintained. The hosts are often on the property either working from home or gardening, but can interact as little or as much as desired. If you want a contactless stay, you will barely notice them except for a car pulling into the other driveway every now and then (and calling the dog if you don’t mind her tending her sheep while you are staying). Your studio is double glazed and insulated so hearing each other is not a concern (or the chickens, for that matter). If you are interested in conversation, interacting with the animals, or tips on things to do locally, they will happily oblige.
