Some info has been automatically translated.
Orchard Cottage is a compact log house, situated on the eastern side of the Tenryu river valley with unobstructed views from the deck across Komagane to the Central Alps.
...and yes, there is an orchard (apples, hazelnuts and paw-paws) in front of and slightly below the cottage.

The space
Orchard Cottage is registered with and has approvals from both the Southern Nagano Kami Ina district and the Komagane City Fire Service. Registration certification "長野県伊那保健所指令26伊保第12ー14号" (the certificate is on display inside the cottage). Please ask us for details if you're interested in our short-stay, seasonal courses on fruit growing (specifically apples and grapes) in Japan.

This self-catering cottage has a fairly large, combined living, dining and kitchen area. The kitchen has an IH hob, kettle, microwave, fridge, a rice cooker ("suihanki") and an oven-toaster. It is also furnished with a full set of crockery and cutlery. There are pots and pans available in the kitchen, including a good sized frying pan and two saucepans.

The bedroom is furnished with two single beds.

The bathroom is a modern, standard unit, with a bath which will comfortably accommodate a 180cm/6ft guest. The hot water for the whole cottage is provided by a double solar-panel on the roof, backed-up by an external, gas-fired boiler (for those winter days when the sun doesn't quite manage to melt the snow off the panels). The toilet and changing area adjoin the bathroom. The bathroom is furnished with towels, shampoo, body soap and a hair dryer. There is also a small electric fan heater available to "pre-heat" the bathroom before stepping in for a shower.

There is both wired and wireless internet access available (the wired point is in the lounge, wireless covers the whole house).

Guest access
There is car parking available directly in front of the cottage.

Guests are actively encouraged to walk round our orchard and, if in season, you can ask to pick and sample fresh fruit (we have raspberries, blueberries and cherries during the late spring and early summer months; grapes, paw-paws, persimmons and hazelnuts in late summer and autumn). We are a working fruit farm, so we can also make up boxes of fruit (especially grapes) for purchase if you'd like to take some home with you or have some sent to friends or family.

Other things to note
For those who are hopelessly addicted to the games "Ingress" or "Pokemon Go", there are a number of portals/power-spots within walking distance of the cottage and this is such a rural area that you're almost guaranteed control for several days, if not weeks. :-)

Where you’ll be

Komagane, 長野県, Japan

We are within easy walking distance of the Komagane Silk Museum (which also has a buffet restaurant and a farm shop).
The "Furusato" (Japanese-style hotel) is next door to the Silk Museum and has a restaurant which is open to non-residents in the evening (advance booking required).
The choice of eateries is somewhat wider in the town centre and it's only a 10~15 minute ride by car to get there from our location.

A restaurant adjacent to the Komagane Ropeway parking area has some interesting, locally-brewed beer for sale and, if you're interested in whisky, the Mars Brewery has an interesting tour (and tasting) at their site, only a few minutes further down the riverside on the Miyada-mura road.

Orchard Cottage is self-catering, but there is a 24-hour supermarket only ten minutes away by car, in Komagane-shi. As usual, there are also convenience stores dotted around the area. We also have a local J.A. supermarket within easy walking distance, but please note that it isn't open after 18:00 or at all on Sundays.

We are about twenty minutes by car from Komagane Ski Area, which is usually open from mid/end of December through to March. It has two main slopes, with a children's play area between. The slopes are both fairly gentle, making it an ideal place for families and beginners. There's a ski/board school and equipment can be hired. There's also a cafe/restaurant on the second floor of the main building, providing good views over the pistes while you're taking a break. The "naita" (evening skiing) runs through until 21:00 on normal nights.

There are quite a few more challenging runs within easy driving distance of Komagane. Over the mountain (on the Kofu side) to the east there's Fujimi Panorama (visible from the expressway when you're travelling from Tokyo) and over in the opposite direction (on the Kiso side of the Central Alps) there's Nomugi Toge. Those are just two of our favourite runs from the many which are accessible by car from here.

My work: Fruit farming. Nagano-Ken, Japan.
Speaks English and Japanese
An Englishman, living and working in the shadow of the Central Alps, southern Nagano-ken, Japan. My wife and I are fruit farmers, producing mainly apples and grapes, but with other fruit in smaller quantities, too. We first discovered Komagane-shi about ten years ago, when we first saw and immediately fell in love with, this small corner of Japan. We were lucky enough to find this (then abandoned) small-holding and started off by building our first log house (Orchard Cottage) while we were still living and working full-time in Tokyo. It took us a year (building only on the weekends) to complete the cottage and then we moved on to planting out the main apple orchard. Once that was done, we moved on to the "big" house.
