Dubrovnik, Dubrovačko-neretvanska županija, Croatia

One of the islands easiest to reach is Lokrum. It takes about 15 minutes to get there by taxi boats that run from the old harbour every 30 minutes from 9 am to 7 pm daily. It was declared a Managed Nature Reserve, and in 1976 a Special Forest Vegetation Reserve. The islet is small, less than one mile wide and here are the things you can do on the island: swim in the Dead Sea (salt-filled lake linked to the open sea), FKK or naturist cliff beach, visit the Benedictine monastery founded in 12th century, have meal in the restaurant, marvel in exotic plants planted by Archduuke Maximilian Ferdinand of Habsburg who bought the island in 1859. and brought over the peacocks. No traffic is allowed on the island and there are no residents living there. This way you can aviod the crowds of Dubrovnik for a day at least. More info about this island: www.lokrum.hr/en
