The "Casita" is the original farm house at Finca la Querencia, an off grid, working dairy and organic vegetable farm near Monteverde. The Casita has been recently updated, yet still retains its original Tico charm. Because it is the original house, the Casita enjoys a protected spot with a great view out over the gardens and pastures and the jungle canopy rising up the cliff edge beyond.
Please note: If you are renting a car, 4x4 with good clearance is necessary.
The Casita is very spacious and light. The house has been recently painted and renovated with a new stove and beds. The casita sits in the middle of Querencia Homestead, and off the grid farm that produces its own electricity and cooking gas, dairy products, organic fruits and vegetables, coffee, and more. Other guests include cows, horses, a mule, sheep, dogs, cats, monkeys and the odd sloth.
Guests have access to the entire house, an outdoor, covered area with a large communal table and fireplace, a swimming pond, a huge organic garden, seasonal fruits ( ask first).
Interaction with guests
Querencia Homestead was built by the owners, Tim and Murtha. They enjoy interacting with guests and will be happy to give guests a tour of the farm and assist them in any way they can. We are a working farm, so sometimes we are pretty busy.
Other things to note
Our neighborhood is a 20-25 minute drive to Monteverde. It is an hour to walk but up a steep hill.
ALSO - The road to our farm is quite the adventure. We Very Very Strongly recommend a 4x4 vehicle with good clearance (no sedans for sure)! The only reason we don't insist on it is that we have had people get here in all kinds of cars -- a lot of it depends on confidence and present conditions. This road is not like anything you have seen, unless you are an off-roader. Please ask if you have questions about access!
Please note that there are no grocery stores immediately accessible from the farm. There is a small local grocery with very basic supplies about a 10-15 minute drive from the farm. There is a better stocked small grocery with lots of local products about 20 minutes away, in Monteverde (Monteverde Whole Foods - no relation to the big US chain!). There are 2 large grocery stores in Santa Elena, a 25-30 minute drive.
We usually have a pretty decent supply of greens in our garden that we like to share, but supply is unpredictable and based on weather and time of year. Please inquire before you come if you would like to know what is available during your stay.
The dairy farmer can sell you raw, unpasteurized milk straight from a cow -- in fact, you can even take a try at milking if you wish. We sometimes have yogurt for sale.
Querencia is a working farm. There are large animals, several ponds including a swimming pond with a zip line into it. While we try to make things safe, it is a farm. Guests are responsible for their own safety, and in particular, the safety of their children.
There may be other guests at the farm. Please be respectful and keep your voices down after 9PM and before 6AM.
