The "Casita" is the original farm house at Finca la Querencia, an off grid, working dairy and organic vegetable farm near Monteverde. The Casita has been recently updated, yet still retains its original Tico charm. Because it is the original house, the Casita enjoys a protected spot with a great view out over the gardens and pastures and the jungle canopy rising up the cliff edge beyond.
Please note: If you are renting a car, 4x4 with good clearance is necessary.

The space

The Casita is very spacious and light. The house has been recently painted and renovated with a new stove and beds. The casita sits in the middle of Querencia Homestead, and off the grid farm that produces its own electricity and cooking gas, dairy products, organic fruits and vegetables, coffee, and more. Other guests include cows, horses, a mule, sheep, dogs, cats, monkeys and the odd sloth.

Guest access

Guests have access to the entire house, an outdoor, covered area with a large communal table and fireplace, a swimming pond, a huge organic garden, seasonal fruits ( ask first).

Interaction with guests

Querencia Homestead was built by the owners, Tim and Murtha. They enjoy interacting with guests and will be happy to give guests a tour of the farm and assist them in any way they can. We are a working farm, so sometimes we are pretty busy.

Other things to note

Our neighborhood is a 20-25 minute drive to Monteverde. It is an hour to walk but up a steep hill.

ALSO - The road to our farm is quite the adventure. We Very Very Strongly recommend a 4x4 vehicle with good clearance (no sedans for sure)! The only reason we don't insist on it is that we have had people get here in all kinds of cars -- a lot of it depends on confidence and present conditions. This road is not like anything you have seen, unless you are an off-roader. Please ask if you have questions about access!

Please note that there are no grocery stores immediately accessible from the farm. There is a small local grocery with very basic supplies about a 10-15 minute drive from the farm. There is a better stocked small grocery with lots of local products about 20 minutes away, in Monteverde (Monteverde Whole Foods - no relation to the big US chain!). There are 2 large grocery stores in Santa Elena, a 25-30 minute drive.

We usually have a pretty decent supply of greens in our garden that we like to share, but supply is unpredictable and based on weather and time of year. Please inquire before you come if you would like to know what is available during your stay.

The dairy farmer can sell you raw, unpasteurized milk straight from a cow -- in fact, you can even take a try at milking if you wish. We sometimes have yogurt for sale.

This was our second lovely stay at this awe inspiring location, and as my car was not suitable for the driveway, they kindly offered a shuttle up the steepest last 500m, this was much appreciated! It was well worth the less than 20 dollar splurge to stay in the much more spacious and airy Casita, instead of the bunk house. The views were incredible and I liked having a little veranda to sit on and star gaze from at night.

This place is such a wonderful oasis. If you really want to be embraced by Mother Nature, this is the place. Being surrounded by mountains and overlooking the beautiful vegetable garden and cows was magnificent. Being able to pick vegetables from the garden was such a treat. Thank you so much! Please note: you have to have a 4x4 in order to get there and you have to be very careful driving. It is not for the faint of heart. It is a place that is better to stay awhile rather than leaving every day to go somewhere, although this is certainly doable. This is the perfect place if you really need a getaway in a spectacular country side surrounded by mountains.

I can't say enough wonderful things about our two-week stay here. The casita was very sweet and comfortable, the property was beyond beautiful, everyone on the farm was friendly and the horseback riding was a real treat for my son. It was Sonia and Freddy and their boys that made our stay really special though. They are the most wonderful, kind-hearted hosts you could ever hope to meet and with their fresh and healthy food offerings, yoga and archery lessons, yogurt and fresh cheese making workshops, their son's pan flute making workshop and the beautiful, organic vegetable garden, we really didn't have any need to leave the farm. We left feeling enriched, nourished and inspired. We can't wait to return. Thank you so much Sonia and Freddy!

Loved the adventure to get there, scenic, accommodation is super - rustic and as I imagined - gorgeous little casita. The veggie garden is available for picking as needed - freshness:) I like the way you can hike into (URL HIDDEN) 1.5 hrs. approx. as the farm is quite secluded. Pretty country area!

Fredy and sonia were wonderful host! We didnt rent a 4x4 but were given the best ways into town and took public buses. The donky trail is an execellent work out, with awe inspiring views! All of the food was amazing! Make sure you try some fishing, the pond zip line and the cob oven pizza! Thanks freddy and sonia!

We had a great time at the Casita. It is a beautiful farm hidden away up the mountains. I would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle, but it's still within striking distance from Monteverde and the cloud forest. Tim & Murtha were excellent hosts and made sure that we had everything we needed.

This was a wonderfully secluded and scenic place to stay. Yes the drive is bumpy but fun and once you arrive you instantly relax. There was a lot of exploring here for our family who loves being outdoors but doesn't get the opportunity in a big city. The hosts are very welcoming and we enjoyed learning about the farm. The casita was the cutest ever and the bed was so comfy. Our daughter enjoyed the tent that was set up for her in the room as well! We went on a horse ride there and Sonia and her family make great fire oven pizzas! Highly recommended!
