We were disappointed in this spot. We’ve been traveling around the world, staying one month in each place, and this was the least appealing so far.
First, the good things: Ben himself is very accommodating, even though he is typically traveling and not nearby. His friend John let us in, showed us around, and was on call if something went wrong. Very nice guy.
Location is fine, though Leith is still pretty rough around the edges. If you’re looking for a “charming” neighborhood, this is not it. That said, there are tons of buses that take you to downtown and all the spots within 20 minutes. Get the app—it’s a godsend. And there are fun spots along the river.
Now the bad. The apartment needs some serious TLC.
The bathroom was filthy. I thought at first the mildew had just stained the grout like it does sometimes, but then I ran my fingernail over it and it came off! It just needed a good scrub, which I did--for an hour. The plastic flange on the shower door is beyond cleaning; it is black with mold. The place also has not been dusted in months it appears.
Several items were also missing that are helpful for a longer stay. There was no toaster, microwave, wine glasses, tv (as noted on the listing), broom, multiple keys (only one was provided), and the pots and pans (4) are campfire quality.
Wifi was frustrating. There is no modem in the apartment so you use the FONE system, which taps into wifi signals across the city. It’s secured with a password/login, but it kicks you off as soon as your computer or phone is inactive for a few minutes. Get used to logging in every ten minutes unless you’re on constantly. It also gets very slow when demand is high, like on weekends.
These are all things that can be easily fixed with just a little more attention to the place. But as of now, the price is not worth it.
