Other things to note
ButtonBirding Tours and Smithfield Guesthouse are situated on the outskirts of the village of Creighton on a farm called Smithfield. Previously dairy farmers for 20 years, Gail and Malcolm Gemmell slowly turned their hobby of birdwatching, cooking and entertaining into a new venture. Malcolm’s knowledge of birds and good people skills are what is needed to satisfy ‘twitchers’, both locally and internationally. He enhanced his skills by becoming an accredited bird guide through South African Tourism. Gail runs the guesthouse efficiently and is the chef-in-house. The couple have managed to balance a unique mix of hospitality, good dining, cosy country comfort and of course -–good birding.

Location

Creighton, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Creighton is a small country town in southern KwaZulu Natal and is situated midway between the coast and the Drakensburg mountain range, 1¾ hours drive from Durban and 1¼ hours from Pietermaritzburg.

The valley is home to scattered dairy farms, surrounded by hills capped with timber and pockets of indigenous Afro-montane forest, which contain Yellowwoods and Stinkwoods in pristine form in sufficient quantities to sustain many forest species, most notably the Endangered Cape Parrot, South Africa's endemic and rarest parrot species.

The Umzimkulu River drains the valley, fed by numerous steep tributaries which fall over spectacular and inaccessible ravines and rapids, which are home to breeding colonies of Bald Ibis.

The valley floor, with its extensive areas of pasture, maize and natural grassland is home to flocks of Grey-crowned and Blue Cranes.

Other resident groups of sensitive species breeding in the valley include Secretary birds, Denham's Bustard as well as the secretive, ventriloquial Black-rumped Buttonquail.

During your stay
Malcolm and Gail Gemmell are your hosts. They give you space but are available when needed. They can also give much guidance on activities to do in the area as well as assist with bookings. Button Birding Tours and Smithfield Guesthouse are situated on the outskirts of the village of Creighton on a farm called Smithfield.

Malcolm’s knowledge of birds and good people skills are what is needed to satisfy ‘twitchers’, both locally and internationally. He enhanced his skills by becoming an accredited bird guide through South African Tourism. Malcolm has 29 years of birding experience in the area and has developed an intimate knowledge of the local bird population, as well as roosts, feeding areas and activities. (And sometimes nest sites.)

He has located several Blue Swallow breeding sites in the district, and provides tours to these and other localities. The Button Birding area hosts some of finest bird species in Southern Africa, due in large part to the extensive array of habitats found here. Specials such as Cape Parrot and Blue Swallow are amongst the list of rare and endangered species. The nomadic Black-rumped Buttonquail appears tantalizingly in the summer, whilst in the winter, we have the equally fickle Cape Eagle Owl from time to time.
