Three cozy cottages over-looking sparkling lake with stunning sunset views. Welcome to Steff's Sunset Hideaway! This booking is for the entire property, with access to all three cottages.

The space
Three cottages that sit atop a gently sloping hill, with a breathtaking Sunset view over East Lake Ainslie. Perfect for families and groups, or even a quiet get-a-way for two, after a great day of hiking in the mountains. As an alternative route to the Cabot Trail, the winding Highway 395 lies alongside the lake, offering stunning views of both the water and the mountains.

Situated only 20 minutes from Inverness, the Atlantic Ocean and the famous Cabot Cliffs Golf Course, this property is the perfect location! Directly behind the property is the Trans-Canada Trail system, where you can enjoy hiking or ATV'ing to your heart's content. To the East, only 15 minutes away, is Whycocomaugh, which is on the Bras d'Or Lakes. It has groceries, lots of amenities and of course a Timmie's!

Growing up in Cape Breton, I am very proud of all the beauty and heritage that the Island offers. We hope you enjoy the cottages, the scenery, local attractions and of course the Celtic Music!

Other things to note
Check-in: Check-in is no earlier than 4:00pm so we have enough time to have the cottages cleaned and ready for your arrival. Guests will be provided with an access code prior to arrival for a lockbox and will be able to check-in independently with the keys provided in the lockbox. At your check-in, if something is not quite right please let us know.

Check-out: Check-out is no later than 10:00am so we have enough time to properly clean the cottages for our next Guest arrival. A simple check-out checklist must be completed by Guest prior to independently checking out.

Early Check-In/Late Check-Out: During the high season we are unable to accomodate requests for early check-in or late-check out - thank you for your understanding. Outside of our high season, we are happy to try our best to accommodate requests for early check-in or late-check out, when possible but cannot be guaranteed. Please send us a message and we’ll see if it’s possible.

THE PROPERTY:

We have worked hard to create a beautifully designed and comfortable space for Guests, so please treat it with care and respect as you would in your own home. We ask that you please leave the cottages in the manner that you found it.

Occupancy: the cottages can accommodate 14 people MAX including children. Please note, in order to conserve energy and resources we only set out the appropriate number of towels and linens required for the number of Guests noted in the reservation. Unfortunately, that means if you do not properly indicate how many Guests will be staying, chances are there will not be enough towels and linens for everyone and no one likes that on vacation!

Well Water System: Like many houses in the area, these cottages rely on a well water system. While water is plentiful, it’s certainly not unlimited like many city centers so please be conservative with water usage. The water is completely safe to cook with, however, periodically it may have a slight odour or taste that you are not accustomed to, so it is recommended that you bring a supply of bottled water to drink .

Septic System: The septic system is very effective however, it will clog up if improper material is flushed down the toilet. Do not flush anything other than toilet paper and human waste. Strictly no baby wipes, feminine products, etc. should be flushed at any time. These items will clog the septic system and you could be charged for the damages. Not fun while on vacation so please don’t do it!

Outdoor Fire Pit: There is an outdoor fire pit and seating for Guests to enjoy. Prior to burning of any kind, Guests must check to ensure that burning is permitted. Unfortunately, we cannot control when burning is prohibited or limited as this is determined by the fire department. Further instructions are available and can be reviewed upon arrival.

CLEANING/HOUSEKEEPING:

Prior to Arrival: the cottages are thoroughly cleaned and restocked by our trusted partner prior to each Guest arrival.

During Your Stay: There are no daily housekeeping services provided. Soiled towels and bed linens can be placed in laundry hampers. Garbage and recycling needs to be divided and kept into the appropriate bins.

Upon Departure and Check-Out: Please keep the cottages clean and leave it exactly how it was upon your arrival. This includes making sure any furniture, kitchen or household items are placed back where you found them. Soiled towels can be placed in laundry hampers or left in bathtubs/showers. A check-out check list will be provided to ensure nothing is overlooked. In extreme cases, excess cleaning will be deducted from your Security/Damage Deposit.

Neighbourhood highlights

Lake Ainslie is the largest natural freshwater lake in Nova Scotia and stretches in a triangular shape out towards the north. The Lake is approximately 20 kilometers long and 3 to 5 km in width in various places. The Southwest Margaree River starts at the northeast corner of the Lake, in Scotsville, and empties into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.

Lake Ainslie is located on the Western side of Cape Breton Island, and is a rural area, with small communities settled around the Lake. There are many active community groups in the area, and Lake Ainslie is a beautiful place to experience all four seasons.

The area was settled by Scottish immigrants around 1820. Gaelic speaking Highlanders came from different parts of Scotland; The Isle of Muck, Island of Kell, Tulloch, Mull, Skye, North and South Uist and settled in communities around the Lake. The communities on either side of the Lake have traditionally been separated by distance and culture. In early days of settlement, Catholics settled on the West side of the Lake and Protestants on the East side.

There is not a lot known about Lake Ainslie before settlement. The Lake has important significance to the Mi'kmaq people of Unama'ki (Cape Breton Island). A number of bald eagles nest around the lake.

In 1991, with the active support of the Margaree River Advisory Committee, the Margaree-Lake Ainslie System became the first river in Nova Scotia to be nominated to the Canadian Heritage Rivers System.

The Lake was named after George Robert Ainslie who was Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia from 1816 to 1820.
