About this listing

The space

This home was excavated by hand into the side of a 13 acre hill overlooking the Sea of Cortez and the town of Los Barriles ( it took forever to build ) . Staying on the hill means you escape the wind from the beach ( it's a kiteboarding, fly fishing and mountain biking mecca for a reason ! ) for the warmth and quiet of the desert . You will be a 5 minute dune buggy ride to the water's edge or to town. .

The home is furnished with funky collection of mid - century furniture and it combines beautifully with a modern kitchen and the unpredictable floor plan to create many really comfortable places to hang out in . Your vista is always filled with expansive combinations of skies , mountains and the ocean . The entire acreage around the home is private and yours to explore .

Los Barriles is a baja boom town with its ranchero soul intact. Local ranch owner families have embraced the American and Canadian families who call Los Barriles home from October to May. In June fishing is the focus of the town as the Sea of Cortez warms up and attracts really big fish.

Los Barriles is a fine place to base from: you are less than a few hours safe drive north or south from epic adventures. It is an easy 50 minute drive from SJD airport. (Car rental or van service ($85) in the terminal)

Side trips:

North: Kayaking and camping on the islands off La Paz
West: Authentic Mexico meets California Surf Town at Todos Santos
South: San Jose del Cabo - Saturday organic market at the Polo Grounds and dinner at Palmilla - and a hundred other great ways to spend the day.
South: Cabo - Vegas as a marina. Loads of fun but you need to be drinking tequila to get it.

Good grocery stores - local organic easy to find.
Easy to eat well every night at a different restaurant or taco stand.
American-style sports bar with a good plasma setup.
Easy to meet fellow travelers and end up at a party dancing or jamming.
Two official ATMs, UPS office and a friendly on-the-ball Police department.
Open WIFI hookups everywhere.
Miles and miles of open public, mainly deserted, beach.
The Sea of Cortez is so incredible you will smile when you swim in it.

Ask a local rancher for just about anything and they will get it for you. Ranch cheese, raw milk, avocados, mangos, papayas, limes, carne, live chickens, horseback guide into the mountains - anything. Look for a white dusty rancher sombrero and/or sandals made of cowhide and tire tread.

Interaction with guests

Tessa our fabulous property manager will be very responsive in advance via email and when you are there if you need just about anything attended to. She can arrange a chef, massages, food, transportation and rentals.

Other things to note

Expectation Adjustment for 2014 - It's been a few years since these photos were taken so while the home is essentially intact, renter wear and tear and the weather has taken its toll on the outdoor furniture.

We stayed 8 days 9 nights, we loved it. Good location. Definitely agree that a 4WD vehicle is ideal. The wifi wasn't working at the time either. We will return, it was a memorable experience and had tons of space inside and outdoors. Amazing views, the stars are beautiful, sun rise and sunset, picture perfect!

We loved our stay at Mike's house. Stunning views and super cool house. We especially liked the multiple outdoor seating areas and small dipping pool to cool off in. With two small fans and all the south facing windows(no shades) it was very hot. We rented a jeep and found it useful for road up to house and to explore surrounding areas. Tessa, the property manager, was very helpful as well. We would return in the future!

Incredible views of the whole area! Property manager Tessa and maintenance guy Alexi were both very responsive and easy to communicate with. Definitely take advantage of the catered meal... it was fresh, delicious and very reasonably priced, especially considering the amount of leftovers we had to eat for the rest of the week!

Mikes house is a dream! Truly a labor of love. This unique home is tastefully decorated in midcentury modern decor and the location is perfectly secluded and private while being close to town. The house was clean and communication with Mike and Tessa (the property manager) was seamless. I'm a chef and I loved cooking meals in this epic kitchen!!! What is really unique about the property is that you can view both the sunrise and the sunset from the house. In the morning you see the sunrise over the ocean and in the evening you see the sunset over the mountains and Arroyo. The view from the house is outstanding! We loved the outdoor living room overlooking the mountains and ocean. It's true outdoor living. You are so connected to nature!

The description is spot on, but the house, location and view is breath taking in person. We loved everything about the house except internet was down during our stay. Probably was a good thing since we did more activities. Definitely recommend renting ATV's and trying to find the waterfall. That was one of our best days. We hopefully can turn this one time trip into a yearly trip. Thanks so much Mike and Tessa!

The house was beautiful and did not disappoint. We pulled the mattresses out onto an upper deck and slept our entire stay under the stars, which was a highlight for us. We enjoyed the plunge pool in the late afternoons and ate several meals outside on the patio. We bought fruit and made smoothies every morning with the blender that was provided and we had Norma come for our first night to make us dinner. We had a great vacation and definitely recommend it!

Mike's house was just what I needed. It's hard to describe the feeling of being perched on the side of the mountain, overlooking the valley, open to the wind and the sun. It is a beautiful location for sure. It is also near a town, so you can stay supplied and eat at local restaurants. The people were nice. Tessa, who was helping to manage the property, was very responsive, going out of her way to make my stay more enjoyable. Overall, this was a great stay and a unique property.
