La Source is a lovely large cottage in the charming, authentically French village of Chaumeil. For the past three years our house has been inspected by Alastair Sawday’s Special Places to Stay and awarded a place in their prestigious guide. The house sits in a private garden with views across to the church, the village and the wooded hills beyond.

The house sleeps eight in 2 double & 2 twin rooms. Please note that 2 rooms are connected, making a family suite with an ensuite bathroom.

The space
Chaumeil is a beatiful, traditional French village in the heart of the Monedieres mountain range. The village has an ancient bar (1550) that serves meals and snacks in summer and is just a few steps away from the house. You can enjoy an aperitif before dinner on your own terrace overlooking the private garden. Inside the house you will find all the character and charm of a 17th century cottage as well as all modern comforts and convenience. In the salon you will find a magnificent cantou or fireplace with a large, cosy woodburning stove. In the kitchen is a woodburning cooker although there is also an electric oven and gas hob for convenience. Enjoy your meals at the roomy oak dining table. There are bedrooms which are lovely and light with views over the village and the mountains beyond. Two of the bedrooms are connected and there is an en-suite bathroom, with toilet, marble washbasin and overbath shower leading off one of these rooms. There is also another shower room with washbasin and toilet off the landing. Beds are comfortable and linen is all beautifully laundered cotton. There is a choice of lightweight duvet or sheets in warm weather and cosy feather duvets in winter.

Guest access
The whole house and garden are yours for the duration of your stay. The private garden surrounds the house on three sides and is screened by hedges. The barn at the back is ours and ensures your privacy and seclusion. The very friendly neighbours occasionally walk by and say 'bonjour' but otherwise you will find this a quiet and private location.

Other things to note
All electricity, hot water and wood for the stoves are provided free of charge. There are electric heaters as well as the wood burning stoves.

If you have any problems or difficulties at the house during your stay please do let us know right away and we will do what we can to help. Please tell us if you have difficulty lighting the stoves or if you are not warm enough. We can help you to manage the stoves and keep the house cosy and warm.

Location

Chaumeil, Limousin, France

Chaumeil is a wonderful spot right in the middle of the Monediere Mountains. It is less than 25 minutes from the A89 for routes to the South of France and Spain and 40 minutes from the A20. There are walking and cycling trails direct from the door and the village is on the pilgrim's route to Saintiago de Compostela in Spain. A boulangerie van arrives every day to deliver bread and basic groceries. There is a Vival mini market, petrol, boulangerie and boucher less than five minutes drive at St Augustin. More shops, pharmacy, post office and a supermarket can be found ten minutes away in the lovely medieval village of Correze and major stores, Lidl etc., at Egleton or in the beautiful, medieval city of Tulle, both half an hour away. The beautiful, medieval village of Treignac, with its lake, watersports and beach, is just twenty minutes away and there is also a small fishing and swimming lake just a few minutes' walk from the house.

We love living in this part of France and especially enjoy the local markets, the beautiful medieval villages and the tranquil and civilized way of life. We know the area of Correze and the Monediere Mountains very well. Sheila is a poet a certified personal coach. Her professional life in the UK was in training and professional development, although in her early career she spent 10 years in an architectural studion, returning to this with a recent interioir design qualification. Pip is an award winning garden designer (including a coveted RHS Silver Medal) and an expert on Oriental antiquities and ancient arts. We have a lovely, ancient farmhouse, built in 1640, to share with walkers, cyclists and anyone who loves the French way of life. It is in the charming village of Chaumeil with a 16thC bar and another bar restaurant just steps away as well as lovely views over the countryside and the mountains beyond.
