Camp in peace & privacy on an off-grid property powered by solar energy and enjoy 50 acres of peaceful woodlands with 4km of nature trails and special features like a SoundForest and meditative walking labyrinth. It’s like having your own private park! Makes a great staycation. You can even have a wholesome breakfast brought to you ($) for a relaxed start to the day. This is a unique place & space, so I have provided detailed listing/photos/captions to help you decide if it's right for you.

The space
COVID-19 UPDATE: I manage the booking calendar to ensure minimum 72 hours between guest occupancy. There are two Airbnb listings on this property (Peaceful Cabin and Yurt Camping); when one gets booked, I block off the other during those dates so you can be assured you will have exclusive use of the property, its features & amenities. (The same guest group may book both listings concurrently for a total occupancy of up to 7 people.)
----------
"Large, bright, funky, airy, cozy," are some of the descriptors guests use to describe the yurt. It is super-private, self-contained with its own amenities, down a forest path about 150m east of the host’s house & parking area. (A cart is available to move your gear.)

COMBINES THE BEST ELEMENTS OF CAMPING: If you like the idea of camping in nature but not doing so in the company of many others (or struggling to erect a tent, which you hope will keep out rain), this is the place for you. You are the only campers on the entire 50 acre property, the tenting and campfire sites are completely private, you get your own privy plus firewood/ice/water are all included. Even a sauna & outdoor shower if you like.

YURT AMBIANCE: Yurts, which have their roots in nomadic Mongolia, are round tents sturdy enough for extended deployment and braving the elements but still able to be packed up and moved. This particular yurt, manufactured on Ontario, features: large 17′ diameter easily accommodates 5 people sleeping (and all their stuff) with space to spare for hanging out; outside skin is waterproof/windproof breathable fabric (not vinyl!); inside walls are cozy wool felt; the floor is off the ground and made of local maple.

The beauty of any tent, including this yurt, is how it allows you to feel immersed in the natural environment. Fabric walls let through the sounds of the forest and you will hear the ocean-like breeze travelling through pine trees. Five giant windows (screened, with flaps that may be opened or closed) connect your sight and senses to the forest which surrounds the yurt. And a large transparent dome in the ceiling can be opened for ventilation and allows sky-gazing day or night!

CAMPING AMENITIES: The yurt is just steps away from the camping area, a peaceful spot with 2 tenting sites (in case you want to use your own tents in addition to the yut) gently sheltered by pine trees arranged around a secluded open-sky area with fire pit and picnic tables. You will also find a small work table sheltered by a tarp in case you need somewhere to cook or prepare food if it is raining.

A privy opposite the yurt, serviced by a modern flush-action portable toilet, has a window to the woods and is lined with cedar panelling. Water for drinking is in glass jugs, water for washing is in plastic containers, provided at the camp area and may be refilled anytime at the house. Ice is available for free, though quantities are limited. Firewood is free, and unlimited.

This property is completely off-grid, with no power line connection to the “outside world”. Electricity is generated on-site from solar energy and some very clever modern electronics. The core and soul of the homestead is a circa-1850 local pioneer log home, which is complimented with additions, modern septic system & deep drilled well, to offer modern conveniences while still retaining its rustic charm. If you’re interested in how home-based renewable energy works, ask the host for walk-thru of the system!

Guest access
In addition to your accommodation, part of the value in your stay is exclusive use of 50 acres of private woodlands with 4km of marked trails looping through varied types of forest, each with its own character: mystical cedars, feathery larches, towering red pines, fragrant spruces, sugar maple hardwood bush, and white pines that whisper to you in the breeze. There are also special features like a magical SoundForest of suspended wind chimes and a meditative walking labyrinth winding its way through the trees.

Guests also have access to the following amenities near the main house:
+ book time to use the wood-fired sauna
+ use the refreshing outdoor shower anytime (ambient temp, not heated)
+ use the campfire pit or fireplace at labyrinth

There are two Airbnb listings on this property, but we only book guests into either ONE for any given dates. However, the SAME guest group may book both listings concurrently for a total occupancy of up to 7 people. (To view other listing http://airbnb.ca/h/off-grid-retreat )

Other things to note
CAMPING EQUIPMENT – The yurt is a very refined tent but nevertheless this is camping so keep in mind you need to bring all necessary gear for sleeping, washing, cooking, etc… a list with packing suggestions is provided to booked guests. Two air mattresses (singles) are available by request.

BREAKFAST ($20 single, $30 couple) – Start a wonderful and relaxed day with brekkie-in-a-basket brought to the yurt at a time of your choosing. Breakfast is wholesome and homemade and always includes organic home baking and as much locally-sourced product as possible. Plus, of course, great (locally-roasted) coffee or tea. Request in advance to ensure availability, or on short-notice on an “as available” basis. Most special dietary needs can be accommodated if requested at least 10 days ahead. Sorry, not available for groups.

INTERNET – There is no WiFi reception at the camp area. There is phone reception, though the strength varies depending on the device and your carrier. Satellite internet is available at/near the house ($) but consider treating yourself to a few days of digital detox :-) during your stay at Off Grid Retreat.

COUNTRY LIVING: Being situated in a rural area, at certain times of year you may occasionally hear (or, ah, smell) agricultural activities in the neighbouring vicinity. Similarly, the trade-off for living surrounded by the good vibes and plentiful oxygen from tens of thousands of trees is inconveniences like insects… welcome to country life! I generally know the times of year these are most impactful but nothing can be guaranteed. If it is a concern, please inquire before booking.

I used to have a conventional house (and conventional life!) in the GTA suburbs. Now, with my partner Vera, I live off-grid and solar-powered, in the country surrounded by 50 acres of woodland habitat and 50,000 trees :-) I spent 25+ years working as a career counsellor, helping people find their direction, but now retired I seem to draw more upon an eclectic collection of qualifications including Yoga Teacher, Labyrinth Faciliator, Master Naturalist, and Chainsaw Operator! Vera and I enjoy meeting the kinds of interesting people who come to stay at this unique place & space, but we are also sensitive to balance being welcoming & helpful with allowing people the privacy, space & peace they may be seeking.

During your stay
It's all about peace, nature, and privacy here, and you are welcome to engage in those however you wish. I enjoy chatting with guests, but if what you want to do is seclude yourself and do your own thing that is totally fine too. It’s your time and space to make whatever kind of experience you like. As host & property owner, I am around most of the time if you require assistance or have questions about anything on- or off-property. I have broad knowledge of the local area, from the Beaver Valley all the way up to Tobermory and down to Kincardine, and always happy to recommend routes, suggest activities, eating places, and so on. I have a particular interest in off-the-beaten-track places, and less-touristy experiences, without hordes of people.
