A charming riad, in a really great up-and-coming part of the Marrakech medina - there are some excellent restaurants within walking distance (Le Jardin, Terraces des Epices) and some more upmarket shops/stallholders in that area, too, to enjoy shopping at without the hassles or hustle and bustle of the main souks. The riad itself is very charming and traditional in style - the lower courtyard is cool and breezy, there's a great rooftop with small pool. Four of the rooms are on the first floor, each with air-con, one room is on the ground floor by the main courtyard (no air-con and a little noisier in terms of morning breakfast preparations on same floor) and one room on the rooftop (we didn't need to use this one but it would be quite hot in the hot season - we travelled in Sept and it was 40 degrees C each day). The rooms are spacious and comfortable, each with a nice ensuite bathroom with a good shower, all individual in their style. Zohra the housekeeper lives in the house and sleeps on the sofa in the living room overnight, and was like our Moroccan grandmother - always greeting us warmly each morning and whenever we got back to the riad, she was delightful. She only speaks French so someone in your group needs to be able to speak French to some degree otherwise communication would be a challenge. Yolande, the riad owner's mother, popped in twice during our week, too, to check all was well - she is very gregarious and happy to help arrange transfers etc. Breakfast was a simple affair, coffee and mint tea, bread, pancakes/chapati and jams and two days we had boiled eggs, too. You need to buy your own bottled water but there are several stalls very nearby. Overall a great spot and a great stay!

I booked this property last minute for a family of 12 adults and 2 children. The home was beautiful and clean; however, my family left EXTREMELY UNHAPPY and UPSET. We were greeted by the housekeeper, Zohra, and were introduced to her daughter. They both were kind and welcoming. Since our time was short, we left the home right away to explore but several family members stayed. When I returned, my mother was visibly upset letting me know that Zohra stayed in the living room with them. She made my mother and my aunt feel uncomfortable since they could not speak freely. She appeared to have wanted to watch a specific TV program and when my mother and aunt asked her to change the channel, she said there were no other channels, which was not true. When she left out of the room, my uncle entered and changed the channel. Zohra came back in and was upset that we had changed her TV program. She clearly lied about not being able to change the channel. The whole family left the home for dinner and returned late in the evening. Zohra was upset that we were getting home late. It appears that she sleeps on the couch and could not go to sleep with us up. Our family offered to go to the rooftop to allow her to go to sleep but she said no. In that moment, I felt bad thinking we were invading her space when I rented the whole house. I could not understand why the homeowners did not give her a separate room if she stayed in the house. The hot water and WIFI had been turned off without letting us know. She did turn everything back on and mentioned there had been a problem with the water. She said the WIFI was turned off because children stay outside the home and steal the connection. When my family decided to go to sleep we were unable to access the rooftop where the sixth bedroom is located. Zohra locked the rooftop door because she was sleeping in the bedroom located in that area. We managed to unlock the door to the rooftop and knocked on the bedroom door asking her to give us the room. I should mention while looking for Zohra to unlock the rooftop we found a door that connects the home to another property. This really made us feel uncomfortable and unsafe since we did not know who was living in this second home and who could come in and out freely. I woke up early in the morning to hear Zohra talking badly about my family to her daughter. She clearly stated that she was upset that she went to bed late and only got a few hours of sleep. I went down to attempt to reason with her letting her know that we were not at fault and that we rented the ENTIRE HOUSE. In summary this was a HORRIBLE experience.

Response from Julien:
Dear Gray, Thank you for taking the time to write such a long review for a one night stay. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your stay as much as the +100 other guests did, but it seems we can't please everybody, even if we put all our effort to make every stay unforgettable. I will answer to few point to not get next guests confused. - The staff is staying around for your comfort, if you need anything they will be happy to assist you (24/7). For most of our guests it's a BIG PLUS to have this service included in the airbnb. But if you don't want to have cleaning, breakfast, city recommendations and diner, then just mention it and we will tell Zorha & Asma to leave the house. - The door you found "that connects the home to another property" is in fact a storage room where NO ONE live, so there is no danger.. - The water of one room was turned off because the hot water tank was leaking, this is an exceptional problem and we are sorry about it. (The 5 other bathroom were working and we fixed the problem of this one before you left). Again we are sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay, we wish you all the best anyway, Warm regards, Julien.

We had a lovely stay in Marrakesh. We arrived from the airport and got a taxi to Dar El Bacha. From there it was a 5 minute walk to the Riad. There was a lot of people trying to help us find the riad in exchange for money, however there was a security guard who walked us to the door. After that every time the security guard saw us, he would escort us either to or from the riad to the main road. We were glad of the security guard as sometimes some men tried to follow us when we were in smaller groups. The riad itself was beautiful and matched the pictures shown. The rooms were cleaned daily and we had a great breakfast every morning. My only criticism of the riad itself was that there seemed to be a lot of people coming and going when we were supposed to have the house to ourselves. For example, one afternoon when we returned to the riad, a group of people came from the upper floor we did not recognise. They said they were relatives of the owner, however it did not sit that well with us and we were not advised other people would be around. It meant that after that we were not as comfortable leaving our things out in the room and using the pool. However, despite this the riad is a great place to stay in Marrakesh especially for a group of friends or a big family.

We had a very authentic Moroccan stay at Julien's beautiful riad! Rooms were beautiful, well air-conditioned, and cleaned daily by our kind maid, Asma. Daily breakfast saved us time and money and all of Julien's helpers (Zora, Yolanda) were accommodating and eager to help. Julien arranged taxis to and fro the riad and even a personal tour guide for great excursions. Amazing, would highly recommend!

Julien's home is amazing, the pictures from the Airbnb listing are accurate if not understating the Riad's beauty! The location is close to the old city, a 10 minute walk gets you to the major attractions. The highlight of the stay was our caretaker, Zoha. We all felt like we were staying in our grandma's house :)
