Stay with the elephant shepherd.

The space

Chanaka’s is a nice little home in the middle of a garden. Guests can use a double room with fan and mosquito nets. The room has an attached bathroom, and guests can use a big living room and the terrace outside. All in all a simple, but nice and tidy place

Interaction with guests

Not too many people we know have… elephants. Chanaka does and he can organise an elephant safari for you if you like. He also does bull cart rides and boat trips, and can cook local meals upon request. Together with his wife and kids, Chanaka lives in separate quarters of the same house.

We booked this home stay in order to meet local people and experience life with a typical Sri Lankan family. So we were expecting basic facilities. However, basic does not mean dirty! The bathroom had not been properly cleaned and there was no hot water in the bathroom. During the first night a shower of dirt fell from the ceiling in the corner. These things happen! We showed our hosts the next day but the dirt was not cleaned up during the remainder of our stay. Breakfast was not included in the price-perhaps we should have checked more clearly but we feel the price did not reflect the poor facilities. The hosts were quite friendly in their welcome but not overly so and we felt like they could have done a lot more. It rained very heavily during our stay and there was no where to hang wet clothes or any offer to put them somewhere else. It seems minor but when the room is small, there is no hot water and the weather is awful it added up to a poor experience. We also felt like the owner took advantage of us by arranging for us to go on his village experience, elephant ride and Jeep safari without really asking us- we were effectively taken to these places and when we said we didn't really want to do them we felt forced into it by saying 'oh the elephant is ready for you'. We were told by the owner that there was a room for the driver we had booked (many tourists have drivers in Sri Lanka as few internal flights and you wouldn't want to hire a car) but when we got there we were told there wasn't. The owner had a holiday resort but still expected us to pay. Most drivers are taken care of by homestays and hotels in Sri Lank. Overall it was a disappointing experience and not good value for money. We have stayed at a variety of places during our Sri Lankan trip for the same price with much better facilities! Including breakfast, hot water, clean bathrooms and even WiFi!

Neverbeen User Profile

Neverbeen offers a wide variety of rare homes off the beaten track, from fisherman's huts and tree houses to heritage homes and tea estates. Our team hand-picks and visits every home and meet all hosts to make ensure guests have a positively memorable stay in places they've never been.

We provide travellers and home owners in challenging locations with access to one another, by offering communication services, online marketing services and tourism training, so that locals can make a living off their home and travellers can get to stay in places they have never been.

As such, Neverbeen works for a world in which everyone has the chance to earn income by renting out their home, regardless of language, internet access and tourism experience.

In Sri Lanka, Dishan manages our growing group of homes in cooperation with our scouts, while Rohan creates listings and provides service. In Amsterdam, Marten works out international growth plans. Our team of in-house programmers is constantly developing the platform itself and Ernst & Young does our finances.

The first country we're active in is Sri Lanka, a beautiful country with many undiscovered places to stay. Due to it recently having opened up to tourism after decades of conflict, it is a great place to start and pilot the Neverbeen concept. We plan to expand to ten countries before the end of 2017.
