The space
Your Airbnb retreat is conveniently located in a peaceful Silver Spring neighborhood area with trees. Walk two blocks to the bus stop on a major highway that will take you to the Silver Spring or Takoma Park Metro Stations (3 miles away, a 15 min. ride). Metro subway is the easiest and most stress free way to travel to Washington, DC. A short trip on the Metro red line will take you to the National Mall with Smithsonian museums and well known monuments.

Please note that our breakfast items have changed: we offer fresh fruit, coffee, and orange juice (we no longer offer baked goods). Bottled water is available at any time. You may use the stove or microwave to prepare your own breakfast in the kitchen. For long-term stays, guests often purchase their own groceries. We share use of the kitchen. Guests may use their own compact refrigerator and/or share the larger one.

When you stay here, you will be:
- 2 blocks from a highway with major bus lines
- 3 miles from the Silver Spring and Takoma Park Metro Stations, with easy access by Metrorail to Washington, DC
- 3 miles from the AFI Theatre (AIRP course location) in downtown Silver Spring
- 9 miles from the White House & National Mall (about 30 min. by car or metro)
- 3.5 miles from the University of Maryland (12 minutes by car)
- 4 miles from the FDA (8 minutes by car)
- 1.5 miles from an entrance to the Beltway
- 7 miles from NIH (14 min. via the Beltway)
- 11 miles from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (17 min. via the Beltway)

The renovated downtown Silver Spring area also has much to offer, including the AFI Silver Theatre, the Fillmore, the Regal Majestic Theater, a new library, and scores of restaurants and shops.

Guest access
All public spaces may be shared by guests, including the kitchen, family room, dining room, living room, wrap-around porch, patio, and yard. The laundry room is in an unfinished basement area and is available by request only.

During your stay
When school is in session, my schedule varies each semester. I’ll let you know when I’m available. If you need help, just text me. I’ll respond to messages between or after classes. In the summer, I'm around and available most of the time.

Other things to note
IMPORTANT: For long term stays (4 weeks or longer) we will clean the room twice a month. In between cleanings, guests will maintain the space according to their own preferences. We will provide cleaning supplies if desired. Guests will be provided with sufficient clean sheets to change their sheets weekly. Guests also will be provided with towels to be laundered by the guests as needed during their stay. For short term stays (less than 4 weeks), the room will be cleaned once during the stay, and guests also will be provided with clean sheets and towels.

All bedrooms are on the second floor (2 for guests, 1 for me, 1 for my son). All bedrooms are private spaces, and all may be locked when you are inside the room.

Neighbourhood highlights

This is a quiet, safe neighborhood where one can hear the sounds of birds most of the year. Deer often wander through the woods directly behind the house.

The location - at the intersection of a dead end street - offers additional privacy and extra space for free on-street parking. You may park in the driveway as well. If you like running, walking, or biking, nearby Sligo Creek Parkway offers an extended path that winds through a long wooded area along the creek.

If you're looking for good food, Samantha's, a local Mexican and Latin American restaurant with excellent food at reasonable prices, is within walking distance. Two miles in the other direction, at Four Corners, is Red Maple, an excellent Asian / Chinese restaurant. You will find the greatest variety of restaurants in downtown Silver Spring, just 15 minutes away by bus or car.

I’m an adjunct English professor at a local community college who enjoys hearing about the life stories and travel adventures of my guests if they want to share. My hobbies include writing and gardening. I have an avid interest in the national political scene, and use my social media accounts largely for comments on current events. I plan to finish a book of essays about raising a son on the autism spectrum, an adult who lives with me.
