Ultra-plush queen mattress with box spring for sturdy, comfortable rest on 2nd-floor in three-bedroom townhouse. Verdant woods (from March through October) provides natural privacy in secluded, serene neighborhood 2 miles from Six Flags Great America, 1 mile from Gurnee Mills Mall, 45 miles from Chicago's Loop (downtown) or Milwaukee's lakefront. (My home is about 10 mi from Wisconsin.) Ample closet space & steps from shower/tub/toilet, as is washer-dryer. (See laundry-use policy & surcharge.)

The space
My COVID-19-free space affords the luxury of a quiet setting amid the rural wooded area of suburban Gurnee known for Six Flags Great America and Gurnee Mills outlet mall. Major roadways connect to downtown Chicago to the south or Milwaukee north-bound. Lake Michigan is five miles east and an iconic scenic drive I recommend taking is one that starts on Sheridan Road and connects to Lake Shore Drive.

Guest access
Guests—excluding unsupervised minors—are permitted use of stove or ovens.

Long-term guests will be given space in the fridge, freezer and pantry and will be expected to buy their own food, spices, etc. Cutting board is a MUST for any cutting or slicing, and counter is expressly prohibited as a cutting surface.

Guests are expected to remain in kitchen during all cooking activities—stovetop, oven or microwave, and clean up and put away items used.

One load of laundry is permitted at no charge per reservation of six (6) days. Supplies are provided. Guests staying longer than one (1) week will need to buy their own laundry supplies. More than one load per week can be discussed for additional cost.

Other things to note
My dog is affectionate and eager to welcome you but I do ask you do not pick him up, feed him, let him outside or take him outside without my prior permission. If he is in the garage or in my bedroom, then please be sure he remains there unless an emergency situation. Certainly you are free to pet the pooch, extend a hand in lickable camaraderie, and praise him for being the perennial "good boy, Koko!"

The townhome you will be staying in is secluded from the main roadway or other streets, just 15 yards off-street behind a stand of trees (mostly bare in the winter months), but still well within the realm of society and civilization. The unit is one of eight townhome units among single-family homes behind and on either side. Parking on-site is limited to one vehicle per listing and additional parking is available off-site along road in front.

Down-to-earth respectful kind of person who appreciates the same qualities in a guest. I make sure to provide you a restful place that exceeds your expectations and give you a pleasant, semi-private lodging—for a fraction of what you'd pay at a nearby hotel. My furry housemate, Koko, and I live here too—along with my cutie-pie daughter when she’s not with her mom. I like to read (fiction and nonfiction, news) and write, and learn from everyone and everything. I love to journal and attend/read at open mic poetry nights and drink strong coffee and play tennis, backgammon and chess. My last overseas trip took me to west Africa, with my Ghanaian-born friend Ben. More recently, local/regional treks brought me to Delray Beach, Florida (to help my mom move), St. Louis, Missouri, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (for copy editors conferences), and Springfield, Illinois, to visit the Abraham Lincoln home and final resting place. Local go-to places: (1) Tempel Farms From the U.S. Lipizzan website: "Until 1916, the Lipizzan stud farm always remained the private possession of the Habsburg monarchy. The expansion of the breed had been affected over the centuries by military conflicts. Whenever warfare threatened the Lipizza stud, the horses were moved away." Performances of these amazing hoof-tapping equines give you a performance you'll remember. Call ahead though because if temperatures soar past 80, they might cancel performances. Horse safety is their para"mount" concern, naturally they consider each one a "mane" attraction (a two-bad-pun yawn). Public shows begin each June. (2) Pyramid House A local curiosity and only about 2.5 miles from us. Local realtor (wife) and self-employed builder (husband) couple designed and built residential pyramid home. I took an insider tour back in the 80s before they ceased giving tours, although I think they still do on a limited basis. You can stop off-road and park by their gate to see the place even if you don't manage to make it inside. About a five-minute drive from my home. Note: A 2018 fire during renovation work damaged the structure, but did not destroy the home, though it will be time to restore to its full glory, according to the owner, based on local news coverage. (3) Volo Auto Museum If you'd love to steer a classic car, this place will give you the next best thing: To stare at classic cars.m Vintage and culturally iconic vehicles abound, such as all of the original Batman car (e.g., from the Adam West caped crusader TV series, to Hollywood versions) and one or two Elvis-owned Caddies. Located about 10 miles west of my home. (4) Lake County Preserves and Park District If you love the outdoors, Lake County (here in Illinois, there's also a Lake County in Indiana) does a great job in buying up open acreage to preserve in perpetuity, which makes living here great knowing that every square centimeter of land will NOT get swallowed by money-making urban sprawl developers. Included on the website are museum locations (which was only location in Illinois last year to have traveling exhibit of Shakespeare original manuscripts) that have stuff you might like, and its many outdoor things, though pretty sure the paddle boats at Independence Grove (in Libertyville) are closed till June. (5) Waukegan Birthplace and childhood home to Jack Benny, Nat King Cole, and Arthur C. Clarke, et al. Some great live theatre (e.g., Clockwise, Three Brothers) and visual and spoken arts venues (I've read stuff at poetry open mic nights), with the Genesee Theater being the best known venue for concerts, etc. EATING OPTIONS: Fast Food: Arby's Boston Market (rotisserie chicken, meatloaf, comfort foods) Bourbon Chicken (at food court in Gurnee Mills, the local mall) Burger King Charley's Philly Steaks (at food court inside Gurnee Mills, the local mall) Chipotle Mexican Grill Culver's (started in Wisconsin, fresher "higher end" place with great ice cream) Dairy Queen (more recognized for their ice cream desserts, but have food too) Dunkin' Donuts (coffee & donuts their mainstay, but decent cheap food options) Five Brothers (fresh meaty burgers, hand-cut fries) Jersey Mike's Subs (excellent subs with tasty sauces, doused in oil & vinegar) Jimano's Pizzeria Jimmy Johns JJ Fish and Chicken (take out only for the most part) Long John Silver's (combined with KFC in one place) KFC McDonalds Mission Barbecue Momcorn (sort of Central American/Mexican cuisine, homey place) Penn Station East Coast Subs (really good fries too) Portillo's (a Chicago-area chain branching out nationally, delicious Italian beef) Potbelly Sandwiches (toasted Italian bread with various options, huge cookies) Sbarro (Italian cuisine, located in Gurnee Mills, the local mall) Steak 'n Shake (tasty shakes with skinny fries & signature steak burgers) Subway Taco Bell Wendy's White Castle Sit-Down: Backyard Steak Pit (fancy themselves an upscale hometown spot) BBQ Production Chicago Wood Fire Pizza (informal venue for good food and booze) Chili's Grill & Bar Chocolate Sanctuary, The (guess the culinary motif) Cracker Barrel Old Country Store (Midwest comfort food paradise) Denny's (24-hour diner, everyone ends up in the corner booth once in a life) Fatman Pizza Pub (sandpit volleyball teams nice outdoor seating option) Giordano's (Italian, thick crust stuffed pizza a signature dish) Golden Corral (buffet, all you can stuff in your face place) Hayashi Japanese Restaurant (sushi bar, menu entrees, delish miso soup) Hooters Joe's Crab Shack Kaiser's Pizza & Pub (hometown favorite, thick and thin crust offerings, etc.) Momcorn (Mexican, Central American cuisine where maize matters) Olive Garden (national chain serving affordable and flavorful options) Outback Steakhouse (national chain known especially for its Bloomin' Onion) Panera Bread (salads, sandwiches, soups, baked goods, breads to buy) Pizzeria Uno Portillo's Hot Dogs (Italian beef, salads, burgers, dessert) Primo Italian American Cuisine Rainforest Cafe (inside Gurnee Mills, the local mall) Red Lobster (the oysters a personal favorite) Red Robin Gourmet Burgers Rosati's Pizza Royal Thai Salutos Pizza & Pasta (home-cooked family style Italian restaurant) Shalimar Restaurant (Halal option for familiar Indian eats) Stevens (nicer place, warm/romantic ambience, solid bar offerings) Tacos el Durango Mexican Grill Tacos del Norte (a couple of locations) The Chocolate Sanctuary (guess the culinary motif) The Point Pancake House (point as in convergence of three streets) Timothy O'Toole's Pub (watering hole, flat-screen TVs galore, decent food) Wildberry's Pancakes & Breakfast (Intelligentsia coffee for the connoisseur) Groceries: Jewel-Osco (longstanding Chicago chain, includes pharmacy) Lewis Fresh Market (wide selection, big demographic is Mexican customers) Mariano's (nice displays and wide selection, juice and coffee bar & grill) Shalimar Grocery Super Mercada El Mexicano Target (small but viable grocery section) Trader Joe's WalMart/Sam's Club (Gurnee) & Walmart Supercenter (Waukegan) Woodmans (24-hours, no food tax in Wisc.; big place includes liquor store)

During your stay
I will be available by text or phone calls throughout the day, though I do work outside my home so if a message is not returned immediately it may be due to a meeting at my job, or driving home. I will reply as soon as possible and please do call directly as that may be easier to communicate if a text message is not replied to quickly.
