Nestled into the pristine lowlands, The Open Book is a charming bookshop with apartment above in the heart of Wigtown, Scotland's National Book Town. Live your dream of having your very own bookshop by the sea in Scotland...for a week or two.

The space

The first ever bookshop holiday / residency experience, Scotland's National Book Town welcomes you to play-bookshop for a week or two. We'll give you your very own apartment and bookshop below, supported by a team of friendly volunteers to make your trip as lovely as possible. Set up by The Wigtown Festival Company, The Open Book's aim is to celebrate books, independent bookshops and welcome people around the world to Scotland's National Book Town. The fee for your stay is low because we are a non-profit. It covers the running costs of the holiday but that is all. A laptop and WiFi are provided, plus bicycles for those who like to explore the bucolic countryside on two wheels!

Guest access

Scotland's National Book Town is in the most beautiful part of Scotland: Galloway. The setting for many literary classics, like The 39 Steps, beauty, history and adventure await you! Sea, ancient woodlands, crumbling castles, a whisky distillery, 7 Stains Cycle Trails, nature preserves, farms, the Southern Upland Way, Scotland's Art Town, Food Town and the home of Burns are just on your doorstep...public transport and bicycles will get you so far, but a car is strongly recommended.

Interaction with guests

The Open Book has a team of volunteers who want to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. Someone will be here to meet/greet you. Otherwise, the rest is up to you. We are a friendly community, many residents have had a busy time joining local families for dinner or gatherings at the pub, other residents spend the holiday in the cozy apartment upstairs and out exploring.

Other things to note

We encourage you to read up on Wigtown, Galloway and prepare for your visit, for there's lots to see here. Though there are buses, and bicycles, a car is strongly recommended and can be rented near Carlisle if you're coming by train, or Prestwick or Glasgow Airport. We offer you the bookshop, apartment and orientation. All the rest for your bookshop holiday is up to you. Please note that this is not a volunteer opportunity, nor are we paying you to work. This is a holiday that you are paying for, classified under cultural tourism and you can enjoy the bookshop as you wish. It is the sole responsibility of the resident to ensure that they adhere to any visa requirements or similar regulations.

The Open Book has stolen my heart... The flat: It's really much larger than it looks in the pictures, with a good kitchen, a spacious dining/sitting room and a bedroom with a double bed and a single bed. (So it works well even for friends travelling together.) And the view from the window seat down the town square is pretty spectacular... The shop: It's a quaint little second-hand bookshop! No more, no less. The volunteers are good at stopping by to welcome new residents (Nanette stopping by with home-made shortbread deserves a mention!) as are indeed lots of other locals. The amount of work you put in is entirely up to you, but we had so much fun in there, messing about with books and talking to customers. Wigtown: It's a charming little place! Friendly people, beautiful surroundings - both within walking distance and if you go for a bit of a drive - and of course it's perfect for book-shopping. When you get there, ask the locals what you should see - they'll all say more or less the same things and they will be right! So go! Book it! It's absolutely wonderful and I can't recommend it enough.

I know what some of you are thinking - how can I take a week off from work, fly all the way to Scotland, and drive through the countryside just to spend a week volunteering in a bookstore. Well its more than just that. This is the most unique traveling experience I've ever had. I don't know if I have run into a community more giving, kind, and willing to open up their doors and lives to strangers. Go to Wigtown, be a shopkeeper, hike the trails, cliffs, and woods that surround the town, have a pint at the pub, explore, and talk to people. Book the trip (if you can!), trust me you won't regret it.

My friend and I had such a lovely time running the bookstore and getting to know the people who came into the shop. Once in a lifetime experience! :)

We had the most wonderful week. On arrival we were greeted warmly and reassured that this was a holiday as well as running a book shop. Being blessed with amazing weather we took advantage of the surrounding countryside which was magical; lush country lanes, majestic hills and a beautiful coastline. When handed the keys to the shop we felt slightly daunted but excited and loved every minute. Wonderful conversations with customers which evolved into 'selfies' with us when they realised they were in 'that' shop! It was a unique place with very friendly and welcoming people. The apartment is far bigger than expected and very well equipped. Thank you to everyone and what a brilliant idea. Sue

Sitting in the window seat of the Open Book apartment above the bookstore each morning, we were treated to the sights and sounds of Wigtown coming awake each day. And we saw them all, the tractor parked at the grocers, the group of citizens holding court at the pet store, the clouds, the rain, the sun. It was an other worldly experience. The apartment itself is very comfortable and spacious. The bookstore gig was fantastic. We met people from so many different countries, and we met Wigtown. The Coop ladies were very helpful, the Craft was very welcoming, Rendevous, always had good food and better sweets, The Glaisnock do tasty, Jane and Harvey at the festival office were out support- love them, Nanette- a dream with the best shortbread, Jessica - the gentle breeze that flew in and punctuated our stay, the other bookstore owners very welcoming, and finally Rosemary - she showed us the history and charm of Wigtown and brightened our day. We will miss them all! Abientōt Wigtow, we will see you again.
