Casa Paladini is a gorgeous stone cottage set in an ancient chestnut grove in the mountains above Castiglione di Garfagnana. Set back in time and well away from the nearest road, you will feel secluded but not isolated in this haven of peace. The cottage sleeps 2 (max 3) and can be rented on its own or in conjunction with our new yurt tent just 50 metres away which sleeps up to four people - have a look at Wild Camping Paladini on airbnb for description of yurt.

The space

Original features such as chestnut beams and floorboards, chestnut furniture, windows and doors and stone-faced exterior and interior make Casa Paladini special. The stove, open fire and traditional pizza oven are an added attraction with fire-wood supplied free of charge.

Guest access

Casa Paladini is set in a clearing in the woods and you are free to wander around the ancient chestnut trees and fruit trees. Guests are welcome to use the vegetable garden with seasonal produce all throughout the year - if you are there The house is on the ancient road that connected Castiglione with the high mountain villages and pastures above, and there is a stunning walk to Castiglione along this trail, passing a medieval arched bridge and small waterfall before reaching the town.

Interaction with guests

Note that there is a 300 metre walk from the nearest parking space and Colm and/or his friends from the helps community of volunteers will be at hand to help you with your luggage on arrival. We often cook improvised meals around a camp fire in the woods and extend an invitation to anyone staying in the cottage. If you'r coming here for a quiet time that's fine too we won't take offense!!!

Other things to note

Autumn is a wonderful time to visit Casa Paladini, with chestnut, wine and porcini mushroom festivals on every weekend in the surrounding villages. In January and Feruary the ski resorts are just a 30.minute drive away, and the springtime brings luscious growth and heat back to the Garfagnana.

Another wonderful stay at Casa Paladini - this time in Spring! We are a family of four, with two young kids, who absolutely love this place. If you like to walk you can easily get by without a car. The quality of the food is incredible, views are spectacular, wildlife thrilling, friendly people about. We hope to be back - summer and autumn next. ;) Thanks Colm! (great host too!)

First of all, yeah, this place is as beautiful as the pictures suggest. Second of all: Colm's travel recommendations should be taken to heart! Arrive before dark (or it can be very hard to find); stay longer than one night (seriously); print out the directions (because you can't trust your cell signal), etc. When you arrive at Casa Paladini, though? Incredible. The view needs to be seen to be believed, and even cloudy, foggy, rainy weather couldn't dampen the beauty of Castiglione di Garfagnana. Like some other reviewers mentioned, you should bring some groceries so you don't have to go up and down the mountain to town, but the house kitchen is very well appointed (the best of any AirBnB I've stayed in), and it's easy to use. The house, like any character building, is not without its quirks but Colm includes a guide to all the little tricks necessary to keep everything running smoothly--from how best to build the fire, to what to do if you trip a breaker. If I ever have the chance, I'd definitely go back to Casa Paladini; and next time, I'd stay longer than a couple of nights!

This house was in a cool location, in a green area that is on very steep switchback roads. The drive to get there was quite the adventure, full of wrong turns and laughter. We only stayed for two nights, and could have stayed for way more. There were many hilltop towns nearby that we could have visited if we had more time. It is a rustic house that has a very comfortable bed, a beautiful bathroom, and a working kitchen. To stay here you must be relatively mobile, as it is a bit of a walk back to the car, or to any of the hilltop towns. From the house we hiked to the nearest hilltop town, which was spectacular. We swam in a nearby river (refreshingly frigid!), and hiked past multiple bike paths that we wish we could have explored. All in all, we loved it, and would definitely go back!

An incredible two months at Casa Paladini! Two adults, a 4 year old, and a baby. It was what we expected, wanted, and needed. Rustic with all the modern conveniences. Colm is very generous and helpful, and always at hand for local information. Some highlights: the mountain views, zero kilometre diet, walking paths, smell of the chestnut smoke, friendly people about, pizza in Chiozza and from our own pizza oven, wine .... So sad to leave. We hope to be back. It was home.

My boyfriend and I stayed in the cottage for 3 nights but we wanted to stay a lot longer! The cottage is very cosy and bigger than we expected and the surroundings are magnificent. We did the two walks that Colm recommented and they were beautiful. Colm was very helpful and gave us advice about whatever we had questions about. So thank you Colm and good luck!

I absolutely loved this place. I was made to feel so at home and I can't wait to go back in the future. Colm made me feel completely at ease and there is such a great vibe about the area. A truly great host and the villa is so rustic and authentic. I made pizza every day I was there in the oven outside. Truly amazing
