RIGHT ON THE OCEAN, Villa Las Ballenas, just 10 minutes from Las Galeras, has 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, a fabulous pool, and an open floor plan with several seating areas inside and out, including an ocean view gazebo and cooking area. Whale watch while eating breakfast, lunch or dinner.

The space

After entering the gated property, a long driveway lined with tropical flowers and fruit trees takes you to the caretaker's home. The housekeeper keeps fresh flower arrangements on the tables and guests are encouraged to help themselves to the papayas, bananas, limes, avocados, etc. Just past the caretaker's home, you spot the ocean and the beautiful Spanish style villa, which has been designed to make good use of the natural cooling affect of the ocean breeze. From the front door, you see through the villa to the swimming pool, and beyond to the ocean, gazebo and barbeque area.

There is an enormous master bedroom with an ocean view and large French doors which open to the pool. There are three more modestly sized bedrooms that share the two additional full baths and an annex off the garage has 2 twin beds and a full bath, too.

The large, well-equipped kitchen opens to a dining room with a table for 8. Just outside the dining room, near the pool, there is another table (with an umbrella) which seats 8 or more. Additional seating under the gazebo near the barbeque area also seats 8 or more. From the thatch roofed gazebo, you can watch whales, cruise ships, and fishing and sailboats. There is a spacious indoor living area adjacent to the dining room.

Guest access

Located on a large property, the villa has an enormous master bedroom (with a queen bed and bunk beds) plus three additional bedrooms, two additional bathrooms, a gourmet kitchen, fabulous pool, seating for large groups inside or out, ocean front gazebo and cooking area, WiFi, and a large, beautiful garden.

Interaction with guests

I am there on check-in to familiarize guests with the home and its amenities and am available 24/7 for questions, or to help you organize your stay.
Caretakers Geronimo and Nana live on the property, but far enough away that your privacy is maintained. They are available 24/7 to help you.

Cynthia was wonderful. Her English and Spanish were so perfect that it made all communications easy. She kept in touch the whole time to make sure everything was alright. Would recommend this villa and this host anytime to anyone

This house was the most amazing place I have ever been. After personally living in the Dominican Republic for two years in all of the poor areas this house blew my friends and I away. The rooms were comfortable and the air conditioning in each room worked perfectly. When you first walk into the home the view from the front door out to the pool and then further on to the ocean crashing against the cliffs was breathtaking. The property is taken care of by a local family who lives on site, Geronimo and Nana and they have a beautiful little daughter Anelis who is always smiling and happy. Geronimo takes care of the landscaping and maintenance and will even wash your car. He also has connections to just about anything and everything you could want to do around the area as they are both from there. Most of his connections are family members. I highly recommend going to Boca del Diablo with him or taking the boat tour with Pedro (his ex-uncle) to Los Haitieses (National Park) and Cayo Levantado (Secluded Island) if you do take this boat be sure the ocean waves aren't too crazy because that boat ride can get rough. The beach at Cayo Levantado is spectacular and has everything you could want to do from scuba to massages or just relaxing drinking and eating. This beach is full of mostly tourists from all over as it is a hot spot for tours. Cindy also has a friend who can take you out scuba diving but while we were there the ocean current was too strong so we unfortunately couldn't make it. This may be something you want to plan ahead of time to make sure the ocean is agreeable. There is also another more secluded beach about 15-20 minutes from the home called Playa Rincon that we had pretty much to ourselves each day we went. The locals go on the weekend but during the week there are only a few resort tours that go and leave really early. Perfect spot for a romantic sunset or family beach day. Nana takes care of the house and cleans every day. She will wash your clothes and sheets as often as you want. She also cooks an amazing array of Dominican dishes. Our favorites were her spaghetti (Dominican Style) with freshly boiled Yuca and white rice with pork chops (chuleta guisada). There are also two dogs that live on the property (Raya and Mancha), you can have them chained up but we never did. We liked having them roam around the property just in case any little creatures decided to join us and beware there are some creatures who would love to. Nothing you wouldn't expect in a tropical jungle atmosphere. The property has three areas, the first area is basically a huge field of fruit trees and flowers that Geronimo does a great job of keeping up with. They picked us some fresh Nisperos and Guayaba while...

Hi Chris, I really appreciate you taking the time to write a review and am happy to know you enjoyed the home and the location. I think it's very special, too... FYI: Sorry you didn't notice the umbrellas, or ask Nana where they are kept. (They are all leaned up behind one of the glass doors between the dining room and the kitchen :-) We don't leave them out all the time in case the wind would come up.) I will pass your suggestion about the living area furniture on to the owner. Thanks. TAKE CARE, Cindy

My husband and I rented this house with our ten year old son and my parents. When we arrived the property manager was there to greet us and was very helpful, suggesting points of interest and offering to make some of the reservations for us. The house is situated on a bluff overlooking the ocean. Within a couple of hours of being at the house we saw the spout of a humpback whale swimming by. The gardens are well maintained and the gazebo on the ocean was used often by my mother. The pool was perfect and well maintained by the gardener who, along with his wife, live on the property. The kitchen is very spacious and had all the required appliances. The three bedrooms were very comfortable and the beds...glorious! The house has high ceilings and an open concept. Very tastefully decorated. There were fishermen every morning offering us the catch of the day. The property manager suggested a cook who prepared delicious meals, especially the fish! We had a wonderful vacation and plan to book this location again!

Thanks for your nice review! It was a pleasure to have you visit and we look forward to hosting you again in the future. Hopefully you can stay longer the next time. FYI: I think you forgot to count the bedroom in the main wing of the villa, as it is a 4 bedroom, 3 bath. Thanks again. Cindy

Cindy, really. No one calls me Cynthia.

My life motto, which seems to work MOST of the time: Que el viento se lleve tus problemas. (Let the wind take your troubles away.)

I'm fairly well-traveled and had never stayed in the same place for more than 2 or 3 days during any of my travels, though I was often gone from my northern California home for months at a time. Then, because I’ve always been drawn to “end of the road” places, I “ended up” in Las Galeras. I moved here a year later to try it out and never went “home”. I’ve explored most of the DR, but I’ve lived on the Samana Peninsula for almost 10 years and now know it quite well.

Though I have a full time job, the ocean, sun and coconut trees make me feel like I'm still on vacation. Sure, I miss some things about life in the good ole USA. Flying, live music (blues, bluegrass, alternative, jazz), backpacking, my fellow volunteers at Sonoma Land Trust, downhill skiing, high speed internet, wine tasting, second hand book stores, Home Depot, The Golden Gate Bridge, Sierra Club "dog hikes", and my granola-crunching, tree-hugging friends, but I love it here.

My Promise: If you come here as my guest, I promise to do whatever I can to make sure you have a great time. I want you to go home thinking that working, saving, planning, organizing and packing (passport, sunscreen, insect repellent, iPhone charger, swim suit, camera, flip flops, iPod, paperback book/s, umbrella).......and then hauling it all to the Dominican Republic and back was worth it. (And that maybe you’d even recommend it to a friend.)

Hope to see you soon.
