Recoleta is the city's most elegant neighborhood because of its buildings, shopping area, and famous cemetery. The name of this Buenos Aires neighborhood derives from the Convent and Church of the Recollect Friars who arrived here in the early 18th century. After the frequent cholera epidemics and, above all, the yellow fever epidemic of 1871, the wealthiest families in the south of the city moved to the north and thus populated the area. From then on, opulent palaces surrounded by gardens began to be built, copying the European model, especially the French one. The architects and labor were usually foreigners, and the materials imported. Today the neighborhood is distinguished by the quality of its architecture, the aristocratic character of its residences and palaces, and its splendid squares. The Church, the Cemetery and the current Cultural Center constitute an architectural complex rich in history.
