Bairro Alto dates back to the 16th century and is characterised by its small workshops and restaurants. By day, it is a quiet sleepy area (recently pedestrianised); by night the area becomes alive and is a popular place to dine and drink away the early hours.
Chiado is considered the most beautiful area of historic Lisbon. It was a place of residence of the Portuguese royalty and of the political and cultural elite. Nearby are located the theatre Sao Luis and the opera Sao Carlos. A little further is Camões Square (Praça de Camões), next to Bairro Alto, picturesque but raffish. Part of Lisbon's nightlife is concentrated in this quarter, where you can hear 'fados' being sung in some restaurants and cafés. Chiado and Bairro Alto are where locals and tourists meet, with elegant hotels, old cafés and the best international fashion shops.
The apartment is a short walking distance from the other picturesque neighbourhoods of Baixa and Alfama, where you can find the historic Castle (Sao Jorge). It is also walking distance to the subway and train stations that can take you to the beautiful beaches around Cascais.
The area is really well served with public transportation:
METRO (450m) – Lisbon metro Baixa/Chiado station (blue and green lines) is about 5 minutes walking from the apartment. From there you can go comfortably to everywhere in the city.
TAXIS (350m) – a taxi station in Chiado is less than 5 minutes walking.
TRAM - the famous tram 28 that runs through Lisbon picturesque city center has a stop just down the street of the apartment.
CASCAIS TRAIN LINE (Cais do Sodré station 900m) – the Cascais line that takes you to “Belem” and the beautiful beaches of Estoril and Cascais is just a 10 minute walk from the apartment.
SINTRA TRAIN LINE (Rossio station 850m) – also just a 10 minute walk from the apartment is Rossio station where you have the line that takes you to Sintra, considered World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a must see place.
LISBON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (9 km) - We recommend a taxi to go to the apartment from the airport and it costs about 10€ to 12€ (and it takes 4 persons or more depending on the type of car).
PARKING - there are three public car parks within 3 minutes walking distance. In the center of Lisbon parking has always a cost.
