Great location
100% of recent guests gave the location a 5-star rating.
Our forty-acre immigrant farmstead hosts retreat guests committed to creativity, spirituality, and learning. We're near several rivers and the city of trails. We have five kilometers of trails on the property with woods, prairie, and ponds for walking, birding, cross-country skiing, and delight. We prize healthy holistic living. Guests and residents choose to remain free of alcohol and drugs. Please tell us a little about the reason for your stay.

The space
The cottage is a rustic 15x30 tiny house with two lofts. Sunny south-facing windows look out to the garden and prairie. Interior white clapboard walls reflect the light. Cozy area rugs top the stained concrete floor. The kitchen has cookware, dishes, and cutlery and an electric stove, refrigerator, toaster, and coffee maker. A ceiling fan circulates heat in winter or blows cooling air in the summer. The cottage is not plumbed but water is provided in containers -- one for drinking water and another for washing and cooking. The farm has its own pristine well and water is tested annually. Guests use the nearby privy and rustic outdoor shower available seasonally.
We rigorously clean and sanitize between guests vis a vis our county health department and Airbnb guidelines. The cleaning fee includes sanitized linens. During heating season, the wood stove with a glass door provides comforting warmth and a view of the fire. We provide wood and instructions on managing the stove. To manage hot weather, we recommend closing the door, all windows, and window coverings in the morning to keep the heat out, and opening everything up in the evening to circulate cool temperatures. It’s not AC but works pretty well.
The cottage is one of four separate live-work spaces on the property. Two are reserved for residents and two are available for guests.
We have a guest book in the cottage with information about the area and farm.
If you are requesting a long stay of a week or more, anticipate a couple exchanges. It’s a rustic space that requires a bit of management, especially in winter.

Where you’ll be

Saint Croix Falls, Wisconsin, United States

The cottage is part of a rural immigrant farmstead in an agricultural area. It's an amazing place to observe birds and wildlife, stroll, and listen to nature. There’s some seasonal farm machinery noise from adjacent properties, mostly during planting and harvest.

I'm an author, educator, and proprietor of Kindred Farm Retreat. I've traveled and lived around the world and love welcoming people to Kindred Farm who appreciate nature and simpler living. My writing life is balanced by gardening, swimming, biking, cross-country skiing, and kayaking. I lived in Paris for two years, London for one, was a resident of Alaska for 13 years, and have lived on both coasts. I feel very fortunate to live at and care for this five-generation Swedish immigrant farmstead. I'm available to answer questions, help people get settled, and enjoy moments of conversation if our paths cross (Website hidden by Airbnb)
