The space
The Earth House Atrium is a unique and rare off-grid earthship home handcrafted from recycled materials. While we are self reliant and off the grid, most folks and carriers get good cell service and we also have wifi and high speed internet! This is a passive solar home that relies on thermal mass and the sun for heating and cooling, power and water. The Earth House is tucked back in the black forest of Colorado Springs and sits on 5 acres of beautiful land and ponderosa pine! This is a very special and non traditional stay for those who enjoy off-grid and eco living/architecture! If you're looking for a new build, or a basic Colorado cabin, this is not for you!
If you're looking to connect with each other and nature on a spiritual level and almost no environmental impact. . .welcome!
If you come in the fall/winter months You need 4wd! This is a rural area with dirt roads and the snow accumulation is much higher than in the city!
We allow well behaved and potty trained pups with a $100 pet fee!

Guest access
Max of 6 guests and no more! The home is self sustaining and our electricity and water are powered by the sun! The home physically cannot sustain more than 6 people. You will have access to the entire home minus the garage and a utility room. Each of these restricted spaces hold very important electrical aspects of our complex off-grid systems!
Other things to note
The home is off grid and powered by the sun. The house isn't going to "shut down" on you, but please be mindful of your usage! Turn off lights and leave most things unplugged unless in use. Use heat sources when needed and when you're actively in that part of the home! Run the dishwasher and other large appliances during the day when the sun is shining! ☀️🌎🌱
The same goes for the water! We have filtered water that uses a solar pump from a private well. It's the most clean and fresh Colorado aquifer water but please be mindful of your usage. You won't ever run out of water, but 6 guests shouldn't all be taking a bath every day if that makes sense! A big part of this home is being mindful of our usage and never taking or using more than we need and we hope you will respect that as well! The water is 100% safe to drink, but we also have a gravity water filter next to the sink that we personally enjoy drinking out of and always fill for guests.
As well as being a passive solar home, it also relies on thermal mass and the earth to keep warm. With that being said, the whole home is open concept including the bedrooms! In order to heat and cool properly both bedrooms are completely open with no doors!
The home does very well regulating its own temperature, but we have a propane fireplace at the front of the home and a pellet stove at the back. The propane fireplace is connected to a smart thermostat that is easy to use. We will have detailed instructions on how to use both and will also provide a reasonable amount of pellets for your stay in the walk in closet. We are off-grid and do not have any AC. There are many different ways to keep the home cool which we will also provide details on and have multiple standing fans available. We just suggest to pack warm layers and sweaters in the winter and lighter layers for around the home in the summer.
Please note and refer to images of the tub and shower combo! It's a beautiful setup and since the photos we've added a few steps directly in front of the tub to make it more accessible! With that being said, unfortunately the design of this shower and tub combo and steps do not make it physically accessible for everyone and keep that in mind when booking!
Our pup and her friends love it out here so much and we're excited for you to bring your pups too! ( $100 pet fee) Please note the home is filled with plants! While most all the plants are high up, some houseplants can make dogs sick if ingested. If your dog is on the "mouthier" side, this might not be the right stay! The same goes for toddlers who might like to put things in their mouths! ;p
