Great location
90% of recent guests gave the location a 5-star rating.
Floating in a 100% indigenous garden, this unique 4 bedroom beach house boasts fabulous sea and mountain views, and has featured in more than 15 magazines, incl. SA House & Leisure and UK Elle Decoration, and TV's Top Billing. It's the perfect spot from which to explore the Overberg.

The space
To maximise the magnificent views of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve mountains and the sea, including Jock's Bay beach (a residents' beach so never full), the main living areas in this house are upstairs and open plan, and include an inside living and eating area, and 2 balau silvered wooden decks, each with living and eating areas. Triple sliding doors create a seamless transition between the interior and exterior decks (and a windbreak when required!). The open plan kitchen is fully equipped.

There are 4 bedrooms downstairs (2 with king beds, 2 with 2 single beds each).

There are 3 bathrooms (master is en-suite), and a downstairs outside covered braai/barbeque area. The downstairs has balau decking running all the way around it.

There is no lawn, instead there is an established fynbos garden (100% endemic and indigenous species) that comes right up to the decks, in line with the biosphere reserve in which it is situated.

The decor is a combination of modern, new pieces and inherited antiques, as well as unique pieces collected during the course of my travels to more than 70 countries.

Where you’ll be

Betty's Bay, Western Cape, South Africa

Betty’s Bay lies on the southern Whale Route coast of the Western Cape, about 1.5 hours from central Cape Town, and 30 minutes from Hermanus. Betty’s Bay is a quiet seasonal holiday village, ideally suited to those who prefer outdoor living. Whale watching, walking, hiking, swimming, surfing, cycling & sand boarding are the sort of activities that one can enjoy here. It's Cape beach living at its best!

There are lovely long silver sandy beaches, as well as a selection of small private beaches. Even in the busy season, the beaches are not heavily populated.

Betty’s Bay boasts the attractions of the Stony Point land-based Penguin Colony (the world's largest breeding ground of African penguins), Harold Porter National Botanical Garden & the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve.

At Stony Point, the boardwalk makes penguin viewing a special treat.
The walks, hikes, picnic spots and mountain bike routes in the Harold Porter Gardens and Kogelberg Reserve are spectacular. These wilderness areas form the central core of the Cape Floral Kingdom and are home to a huge range of flora & fauna species. The Palmiet River is also a favourite for swimming or canoeing. Horse riding on Kleinmond beach is highly recommended.

Betty’s Bay is centrally located with Cape Town, Cape Town International Airport, Hermanus & the Cape winelands all around a 60-90 minutes drive away.

The Arabella Golf Course is 15 minutes drive away. Arabella also has a world-class spa for pampering sessions.

Note that Betty's Bay is quiet and peaceful. If you're looking for a town by the sea, then Hermanus is a better fit for you.

I returned home to amazing South Africa in 2015 after 15 years abroad working in humanitarian relief and international development. I’ve lived in 7 countries (including 7 years in Afghanistan), and visited over 70 countries (7 seems to be a special number for me!). It took all of that for me to work out that home, Cape Town, happens to be the most beautiful city in the world. I love being back, and also love sharing my homes with visitors from near and far. My homes reflect my personality to a large extent - light and bright, easy-going and comfortable, stylish but quirky and eclectic! Airbnb has allowed me to keep my homes, which would have been a challenge now that I'm earning local currency again. Airbnb has also been empowering and uplifting for my small network of domestic support staff, who make it all happen effortlessly. As a seasoned traveler and tourist myself, I hope I have created a home and base for guests that caters to the sorts of needs I know I had when travelling, whether for work or pleasure. Welcome!

During your stay
As I live in Cape Town, I often don't actually meet guests in person, but am in touch by mail, phone or text and on hand 24/7 to answer questions and deal with any unforeseen issues. I have a local network that supports me to make remote management possible.

Central to my team is Nozi, my cleaner, who lives in Kleinmond. Nozi's economic empowerment is a wonderful result of Airbnb, however her mobility is dictated by the local taxi drivers. Hence the lockbox checkin arrangement!
