Neighbourhood highlights
Art, spas and many restaurants, bars, co-working spaces and clubs liven up the life of Porta Romana. The arch by the same name, in Piazzale Medaglie d'Oro, was one of the six main access gates to Milan, an integral part of the Spanish walls built to strengthen the defense of the city by Governor Ferrante I Gonzaga. Nearby is Casa Sartorio, a building designed by Enrico Provasi in 1910, that calls to mind, on a small scale, the Flatiron Building in New York City. To indulge in a relaxing break, in Porta Romana there is an ancient spa with a view of the Roman aqueduct. It is worth visiting the Giardino della Rotonda della Besana, a former cemetery and now a green area with an English-style lawn, and the deconsecrated Church of S. Michele ai Nuovi Sepolcri.
A few steps away is the New Bocconi University Campus designed in this area in 1941 redesigning the district with its rationalist architecture. The district is very young, frequented by university students, but also full of places where you can have a drink or take a walk in Parco Ravizza or Parco della Resistenza.
There’s no better place to enjoy the iconic Milanese shopping experience than in this sumptuous district, long frequented by the rich, famous and fashionable. Beautiful, chic and fun are all words that can apply to both the Porta Romana district of Milan and the people who come here. Enjoy the area’s boutiques, restaurants and art or simply sit on a terrace and watch as Milan’s best-dressed stroll up and down the street. Appreciate the more modern architecture of the Fondazione Prada, whose revolving art shows compete with its gold-plated Rem Koolhaas exterior. See contemporary art at the Fabbrica Orobia, an innovative gallery inside a former factory. Attend cutting-edge theater at the Teatro Franco Parenti, known for innovative shows.
The Monument to the Fallen statue commemorates Milanese losses during World War I. Browse for books at the concept bookstore, bar and design shop Open or tour the campus of Bocconi University. On a hot day, cool off in the Bagni Misteriosi, a public swimming pool with a very Italian statue in the middle. For a more luxurious experience, end the day at QC Termemilano, a thermal pool and spa. Enjoy your Italian vacation with a poolside glass of champagne while looking up at the illuminated arches of Milan’s monumental architecture..On your travels, watch for the vermilion red of Porta Romana’s crest, marking it as one of the historic districts, or “rioni,” of Milan.
