A pleasant room and a help-yourself breakfast in our family home in a lovely setting next to a working water mill in the coastal village of Golspie.

The space
We have a room available on a hostel-style basis in our friendly Scottish / Kiwi home. The Mill House is right on the edge of the village of Golspie in the Highlands of Scotland, only 150 metres from the main road (A9), but in a very tranquil and beautiful spot.

The room has a comfortable double bed and plenty of storage. There's a shared bathroom and a comfortable family sitting room with a log burner.

It's a family home, pleasant but not fancy, indeed a bit scruffy in places. We have two very small children who are generally pretty well-behaved but they do scatter toys round the place and might break into song over breakfast. There's plenty of space for storing bikes and drying boots and waterproofs.

The house is in a lovely setting, next to a working water mill, built in the 1860's, which we run (find Golspie Mill online to find out more ).

We invite you to help yourself to breakfast - we offer Golspie Mill porridge, cereal, homemade bread when time permits, fruit, yogurt, tea, coffee etc or if you prefer you're welcome to use the kitchen to cook your own breakfast. We're also happy to point you in the direction of nice places to eat out locally.

Guest access
We'd like you to feel at home in the house and make use of the kitchen, sitting room, washing/drying facilities and the garden and barbecue whenever you want.

Other things to note
The mobile phone signal in the house is a bit patchy but we have wifi that you're welcome to use.

Location

Golspie, United Kingdom

Golspie is a small coastal village, between the sea and the hills. It's an hours drive from Inverness and an hours drive from the spectacular north coast.

The area is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, with great cycling on quiet roads, an excellent mountain bike track, lovely walks along the shore and through the woods. The popular Lands End - John o Groats cycle route passes the top of the road (150 metres from the house). The Loch Fleet National Nature Reserve is a couple miles down the road and is a lovely place to watch wading birds on the mudflats or look for seals at low tide.

Nearby are nice beaches, good places to surf and kayak and we're only 30 minutes from some great hills. Royal Dornoch, Golspie and Brora golf courses are all within very easy reach and welcome visitors.

In Golspie, there is a handful of shops, including a small supermarket, a chemist and an excellent hardware/gift store. Bigger shops are in Tain, a 25 minute drive away, where you can also visit the Glemorangie Distillery.

Hello! We're friendly, outgoing and laid-back people who like meeting new folk and hearing about other places as well as helping visitors to discover the best places in this lovely part of Scotland. We have lived here since 2001 when we took over the running of the traditional water-powered mill. My husband Bob, a New Zealander, is the miller. I work part-time in a nature conservation organisation, promoting nature-based tourism. We both enjoy outdoor sports: Bob surfs a bit and enjoys the sea and I enjoy hill-walking, sailing and cycling. We have a productive garden and polytunnel and grow our own fruit and veg (for some of the year at least). We have 2 small children, so we also know a bit about playparks!
