We stayed in two rooms while at this hostel. They were reasonably clean and comfortable. There were a ton of ants in the ground floor apartment all over the kitchen, the bathroom sink leaked all over the floor, and I got pink eye from the dirty brown shower water. I actually had …

Mel was great, everything was as shown on pictures. She's nice and a very good cooker. The apartment is great, the neighborhood´s very quiet and safety. Highly recommended.

Pictures look way better than it actually was. The AC was terrible and wasn't cold and had to $10 per day on top of the over priced room I soon found out. No tv on top of that, too small of fridge

Response from Mel:
I'm sorry that Tyler appears that he didn't enjoy his stay. Tyler stopped by before actually proceeding with his reservation through AirBnb, so he had the opportunity to view the apartment before deciding if he'd like to stay there, and opted to rent for a full month, so I'm unsure about why he would put a comment that the pictures look better than it actually was, or about the small fridge, as it's noted in the listing that there's a mini-fridge, and he saw it before renting. A TV is not listed as one of our amenities, we don't have TVs in any of our rentals. It is mentioned clearly in the listing, as well as in the email that I sent to Tyler when asking to book, that there is a $10/day surcharge for a/c usage. No mention was made during the entire time he was here that the a/c wasn't working well, and he opted to use it for several of the days of the stay (now that it's been reported, we're having a technician take a look at it). It's confusing to me why Tyler would negatively comment on things that were clearly presented from the start. We offer economical rental options with the basics, and make sure to note the amenities that are available so that potential guests can make a choice that works best for their requirements.

Mel is a great host, she gave us a free upgrade from the "Comfy One-bedroom Apartment" to The Casita, and then a very warm welcome telling us what's around the hostel and giving tips about what and where to do things in Roatán. The Casita was perfect, clean, spacious, quiet, f…

This apartment is part of the main hostel building (it is downstairs at the front) and receives direct afternoon sun in the front window making it very hot in the evenings, especially when also cooking in the kitchen. The apartment was somewhat grimy and had not been cleaned adeq…

I'm sorry that the kitchen wasn't thoroughly cleaned: this is not acceptable, and I've shared your review with Cecilia to make sure that each unit is properly prepared for new guests (I'm in Canada for several months, as my dad has health issues). The hot water should be able to be adjusted, I've asked Cecilia to arrange a plumber to take a look. The controls you refer to in the living room are actually for our solar energy, which is our principal power source: the inverter is in there, so a humming/fan noise comes from that. There's actually fantastic snorkeling in Sandy Bay, about a 200 meter swim from shore. All you need to do is to walk down to the Sandy Bay beach (about a 3 min walk away), and then swim straight out. The shallow water isn't very nice for swimming/wading, as there's turtle grass that can't be removed for environmental reasons, but once you swim past that and get to the reef, it's spectacular. Hope I'll get the chance to meet you in person someday! Mel

I am a single mom of 2, living on site at our small, friendly hostel in a residential area in Sandy Bay on the island of Roatan. I traveled around for several years as a scuba instructor before making my home in Roatan. We're just a few minutes walk to the dolphins at Anthony's…
