The space

Arkland is an 18th Century listed Georgian building situated in a quiet lane and has one flat available for self-catering or rooms only when available. The whitewashed historic building is down a quiet lane situated right in the centre of the picturesque small town of Inveraray, Argyll on the west coast of Scotland and enjoys attractive views of the loch and mountains. A stroll of only two minutes brings you to the shores of Loch Fyne, one of the longest sea lochs in Scotland.
Inveraray Castle (home of Clan Campbell) and Inveraray Jail are interesting to visit nearby and there are also many beautiful gardens in the area such as Crarae (NTS)
The First Floor flat has two bedrooms: Double room with en-suite shower; the family room has a double and single bed - very comfortable beds with duvets.
Central bathroom with a bath and electric shower.
The lounge is open plan with dining/kitchen area. The kitchen is extremely well equipped with everything you could want for your stay - short or long.

The whole flat is warm with central heating and a log effect electric stove in the lounge area; plenty of hot water; electric showers; hair dryers; radios, tv with freeview, a selection of DVDs and CDs for the music centre; books and maps also games for the children and adults!
Excellent free Wifi in all areas
The flat is bright and airy with lots of lovely prints, paintings and ornaments that I have picked up or chosen carefully on my travels at home and abroad in Mexico, Spain, Cuba and Morocco.

For bird lovers - we have a bird cafe outside the First floor window attracting siskins, blue tits, chaffinches, robins, etc

The flats are good for individual families or small groups touring or having holidays together. People think they are cosy and welcoming! If there is availability rooms can also be rented individually with access to kitchen and lounge.

I have occasional need for access through the main door and hall of the first floor flat to my self-contained attic flat above. However, my work takes me away from home frequently during the summer season especially.

I am a professional tour guide, so I can tell you anything about Scotland and help plan your routes and tours. Unfortunately I am away from home in the summer months with my work so am not able to meet all guests personally. If you wish particular information in advance I will be pleased to try and help you. I am from Scotland but lived in Spain for many years and speak fluent Spanish. I love to welcome people to Scotland and in particular to the beautiful district of Argyll and tell them about the 'hidden' less touristy places to visit.

Children and babies: There is a fold up cot, high chair and changing mat available.

Well behaved pets are welcome too by prior arrangement! Please bring dog's own clean bedding.

Parking:Nearby parking for cars and vans: There is free parking at top of the lane at or behind the Community Hall, on Main Street or on the main road. There is access for loading and unloading outside flats. Free parking in The Avenue from November to end March

Walkers are very welcome - Arkland is in a good location for walking, forestry, lochside or mountain tracks. There are drying facilities and a tumble dryer is available.
Bikers and Cyclists: There is parking alongside Arkland and a secure shed available for bikes

Location & Communications:
In centre of small village of Inveraray. Inveraray is on main bus route from Glasgow A82/A83. Approximately 1.5 – 2 hours.

Collection at nearest train stations (Arrochar/Tarbet Loch Lomond or Dalmally), airport (Glasgow or Prestwick) or ferry can be arranged

Other nearby attractions are Inveraray Castle, Inveraray Jail, Auchindrain Museum, Crarae Gardens or Ardkinglas Gardens, the golf course and (naturally) the local pub for a good selection of whiskies and local ales and good live music on Fridays and Saturdays.

Loch Fyne Oysters sea food restaurant is 15 minutes by car or taxi - just ask us for details of our private taxi hire. Samphire fish & seafood restaurant is just round the corner from Arkland! The George Hotel is less than 5 minutes across the road for food and live music on Fridays & Saturdays.

"Your flat is cosy and welcoming. Very well equipped. I’m sure we will come back." - one of the many comments in our Arkland guest book.

Other things to note

Important: Please ensure that you read the HOUSE MANUAL when your booking is confirmed and in advance of your stay (do not rely on downloading from your mobile phone when you arrive) so that you know the location of the property, parking, entry details, etc and can find it easily on arrival as I may not be at home to welcome you. This ensures that you have a trouble free experience even if you arrive late at the property.

We had a short stay at this central spot. The apartment was extremely clean and it was a comfortable and quiet spot for our family. Recommended!

The cottage was exactly as described in the heart of the beautiful little town of Inveraray. Our stay was excellent and comfortable, and I would very happily recommend the Arkland Cottage to anyone.

What a warm, quiet apartment to stay in. Rooms are very private - you won't hear anything through the walls!! Kathleen is SUPER knowledgeable (She's a tour guide!) so has loads of ideas of things and places to do and see. Great Indian food around the corner and a nice pub at the hotel just down street.

Thanks for your lovely comments. Glad to help and hope you found the walk I suggested on Kerrera - despite the weather!

Although the internet connection was good we struggled with the dampness and musty smells throughout. Also the small amount of toilet roll left for 4 people was inadequate.

Response from Kathleen:
Hello Isla, I am sorry that you were disappointed by your visit. I do have a housekeeper who is responsible for replacing toilet paper, etc. Usually replacements are kept in the cupboard below the sink - but you were not to know that! As for the smell of mustiness - nobody else has mentioned this but you will know that this is an 18th C historic building and we have had, in Scotland and, in particular in Argyll, very high rainfall - particularly this August. I can only attribute this to the musty or damp smell you say you encountered. I can assure you that all areas are cleaned after every turnover. I cannot understand why you had a problem with the entry details - these are clearly set out on the House Manual which should be read when booking as there is no 3 or 4G in the Inveraray area.

Kathleen's place is very homely. She was very helpful in giving useful advice about the town including how to arrange a doctors appointment. When there was a problem with the clothes dryer breaking down she went out of her way and dried our washing herself late into the night, even though she had an early appointment the next day! Excellent location in town - walking distance to the castle.

I live quite a busy and fulfilled life as I work as a tour guide and driver guide in Scotland in the summer months. I suppose I have the best of both worlds because I have some free time in the winter so I love to travel and discover new places then and also to catch up with my fiddling as I play traditional Scottish music and go to workshops and Feis's (festivals) and have met some great people there of all ages. I also am very lucky to have 2 lovely grandsons and like to take them camping, canoeing and cycling in my free time. I have always been quite active and enjoy a bit of adventure in my life as well as going to the theatre, movies, galleries, etc. Country life is great but its super to have a jaunt to the city and to discover restaurants with good food and ambiance. I always have my camera at the ready for an unexpected photo op – there are plenty of those around Argyll. It is lovely to meet new people, especially from other countries and to help them to discover the best of Scotland so I hope I can do that for you!
