FACT: Mike's place is beautiful. The host's warm, smiling hospitality made us feel completely at home...if home were a marvel of down-to-earth bungalow-style architecture, interior design, and gardening. In between outings to nearby Balboa Park and gastronomically rich neighborhoods like Hillcrest, North Park, and Mission Hills, we took copious design notes on the thoughtful implementation of skylights, window seats, artwork (produced in Mike's neighboring art studio) and rustically cozy furnishings. We also enjoyed ample time just sitting, staring, and breathing in this remarkably inviting space. Mike's Place is a true retreat, and we would recommend to anyone who feels the need to step out of time for a bit...

Mike´s Place is a unique Place in San Diego! We stayed there for two days - unfortunately less time to experience San Diego and Mike´s wonderful appartement. The interior is highly finished with many beautiful details. We loved also Mike´s art and all the histrory of the appartement and the street, where Mike lives. The patio is so nice, as you can see on the pictures. A breathtaking House with a great patio - we would say, you cannot find this style a second time - unique! Mike is a great and pleasant host, we loved to stay at his house and had a very nice and interesting communication! The location is perfect, too. Many restaurants close to Mike´s appartement, even without a car. And the Balboa Park and San Diego is only 1.5 miles away, Gas lamp quarter can be reached quickly too. And Mike´s local tips made our stay perfect. Without his tips we wouldn´t have seen so many nice places of San Diego in such a short time. If you would like to visit San Diego, visit Mike´s Place! Mike was a gracious host, we loved his place. What a charming craftsman style cottage. Spotless and nicely decorated with many artistic touches. Kitchen had everything we needed and the grounds were beautiful. The location is central to everything and minutes to Balboa Park. Parking was never a problem and the home is located in a nice, quiet neighborhood. Would highly recommend to a couple looking for an escape from the rat race.

Genuinely the best place we've stayed anywhere in the world when using airbnb. The cottage is located at the rear of Mike's own home and is of a quality to put most hotels to shame. The cottage also features Mike's own beautiful artwork, and the property itself is full of superb features and touches. Free parking is available on the street outside the property and the neighbourhood felt really safe. It's about $10-$12 in an Uber from the centre of town. Mike provided drinks on our arrival and the property was clean and quiet. When we did see Mike he was great to chat to, really friendly and engaging. We loved staying with Mike and recommend him without hesitation.

We had such a good stay for two nights with Mike. It was so comfortable, well appointed and beautiful. The garden is something of a wonderland and the amenities of wifi, parking and local shops were all excellent. Mike made us feel very welcome and he is extreemly charming. Lovely, lovely, lovely. I stayed here (solo) while in town for a business conference and absolutely loved it. Its charming and clean, and located in a quiet and safe neighborhood. I had a rental car and it was a quick and simple drive to get to the convention center (took about 12 minutes). The garden is amazing, all sorts of whimsical treasures to be found while poking around in it. There is a walking bridge very close that leads to a little shopping village - was able to hit up a Whole Foods AND a Trader Joe's to grab some groceries. Mike provides all the supplies for fresh coffee in the morning - including organic beans (and a grinder)! The bed was soft and I slept great. Mike is a fantastic host, very hospitable and has lovely friends - who I got to meet and talk to at a yard sale he had! What fun! I definitely recommend this place!

Our stay at Mike's place was truly phenomenal. Not only was the space beautiful, but Mike was a welcoming host. Like others have mentioned, I found the cottage to be clean and extremely well thought out. Everything we could think of needing was provided. We loved Mike’s Place so much, we stayed there twice this year! This was no week-end trip! We live over 2200 miles away. We visited San Diego twice this year because we are San Diego Zoo diamond members and Mike’s Place is very close to the San Diego Zoo. More than the proximity to the Zoo is the fact that we enjoyed Mike’s Place so much! We feel so at peace there! Mike is the ultimate jovial host; he treats you as special friends whom his mission is to serve. We hated to leave Mike's Place both times. Mike spared no expense and ignored no detail to make this cottage the perfect vacation retreat. We wish we could move Mike and his place to every location we visit!

We stayed for a full week and while this house is central to walking the shops and restaurants on University Ave., we utilized the outdoor kitchen while we were there. The room appears to have been just renovated and has all the space you need. It is attached to the house with a doorway that has been closed up and sound proofed as the unit has its own double door private entrance that leads to the outdoor area. The kitchen, which has a grill, refrigerator, running water and microwave, the unit features an outdoor dining area and outdoor living room. The landscaping and the home are well done. Ricardo is an accommodating and genuine person, very comfortable to be around.

What a pleasant experience. Upon my later than expected arrival, Ricardo kept his schedule flexible to be able to greet me. The place was impeccably clean, very handsome and comfortable. It was an added treat that Ricardo had cruiser bikes that I was able to us for trips to the grocery store and beautiful Balboa Park (only blocks away). One evening I had a friend over and we relaxed in the lushly landscaped yard...truly a sanctuary. Thank you!

This was the second time I have stayed at this property. I can't reiterate how perfect the location is to all things great: food, drink, nature. Ricardo is very hospitable and gracious, and responds to text messages immediately. The space is very clean, the shower is still amazing, the linens are fresh, the outdoor area is nicely maintained and landscaped, and the king size bed is so comfortable. This will be my go-to rental for my future visits to SD, hands down.

Ricardo was an amazing host and his house was amazing. Everything advertised on the web page was exactly as we expected when we walked in the house. Location was perfect everything was at the max 20 min but for the most part at min 5-10min. I will have to admit I never wanted to leave his shower because it felt like a spa. But over all nothing to complain about he was helpful and friendly host. I can't wait to come back to visit.

Ricardo was right there when we arrived. Whenever we contacted him by text he responded always within minutes. We felt very much at home at the apartment and there was a good balance with Ricardo being attentive to our needs and at the same time having our privacy. We were surprised that there was not a full kitchen in the apartment, but we discovered that we could cook complete meals outside on the beautiful and comfortable patio. There was a barbeque, gas burner, refrigerator and sink and because of the weather being sunny (end of November) cooking outside was completely delightful. We enjoyed the very comfortable king size bed, the Jaccuzi tub and the wonderful rain shower. Ricardo's place is conveniently located within 4 blocks distance from several restaurants, a Whole Foods store, a Ralph's and a Trader Joe's store. We would definitely stay at the Zen apartment again!

The private retreat canyon was fantastic. We arrived to a beautiful retreat in Mission Hills that welcomed us with homemade cookies! The indoor space (esp the bed!!) was so cozy and comfy...the outdoor space was magical that included a couple of chairs to relax in, blankets to keep you warm from the chilly autumn nights and warm lighting above adding a nice touch to the atmosphere William and Kelly created. The location was great! Located anywhere from 5 minutes (in a car) to great eateries in the neighborhood, 10 minutes to Little Italy, South Park, downtown and other great neighborhoods, to 15-20 minutes to amazing beaches and sunsets and 30 or so minutes to wineries just outside of San Diego. Overall a pretty amazing stay in a pretty amazing town :)

Loved this place! It was very easy to communicate with William. He was super accommodating and very kind. The room was spotless. It's all about the details! You can see your hosts truly care about making it an enjoyable experience. Plenty of amenities. Creative use of this space. Lots of light, outlets, soft blankets, luggage rack, towels, hair dryer..anything you could possibly need is provided. The setting gives the feeling of a tropical tree house. We loved walking to Expresso Mio in the mornings and enjoying wine on the deck at night. The neighborhood has ridiculously beautiful homes adorned with exotic flowers and fruit trees. William's place is truly special and the perfect home base for exploring San Diego.

I had an amazing time here. The patio has a beautiful view and is perfect for a romantic getaway. It is perfectly located near nightlife, beaches, restaurants, and the airport. I would absolutely stay here again! It was very clean and I especially loved the cookies.

Wonderful magical place

William was an amazing host. The studio, as the reviews say, is small and a tighter fit for 2, however having said that, the studio suited all our needs it was very clean and cozy. The bed was comfortable and William and his wife were kind enough to leave goodies in the room for our arrival. The studio is in one of the best locations in SD because it is near EVERYTHING. Quiet neighborhood and close to all major SD sites. The only 2 observations I would say would be "suggestions" would be to have an iron and ironing board in the room and to maybe have less wind chimes. Now William did say to call him if we needed anything and we did NOT call for the iron or the chimes, but in dealing with William I am positive that something would have been done. Overall and bottom line, If you are looking for a nice place to stay and would like to be in a great place and deal with someone who you can trust and who is a GREAT host. Book this place because you won't be disappointed.

Wonderful hosts! The house was located in a cute neighborhood, with coffee shops and food aplenty. The room had everything we needed, and even snacks! We loved the rooftop oasis, off street parking and the comfy bed. Couldn't have picked a better place to stay!

My husband and I had a wonderful time at Michael's place. The apartment was beautiful, very clean and close to Balboa Park which was amazing. Michael and James were wonderful hosts and they gave us great recommendations.

Although I have had just few Airbnb stays, they all seem to be great. Michael and James are at the top of that list. Both were great to talk with and made the stay very relaxed and comfortable. The room was clean (fresh, crisp bed linens) and thy even thoughtfully provided Trader Joe's bath soap and shampoo in the bathroom. The location is terrific with a grocery store across the street and a Whole Foods down the block. Several good restaurants all within short walking distance. No question that I would stay here again for future trips to San Diego.

Our stay at Michael's was incredible. We arrived early and he went out of his way to help us check in early, and also let us leave our luggage at his place until the evening while we were seeing the city. The room was convenient and clean, just as described, and the rooftop is beautiful. The location was great! So much great food in the neighborhood. In general, Michael and James were super friendly and made us feel totally at home. Most importantly - if you manage to stay there when James is cooking and have dinner with them, you will not regret it. So yummy!!! We had a great time, and will definitely come back.

We had a wonderful time at this cute, quiet, clean little guest house. It’s located in a nice, safe neighborhood with parking right in front of the home. Upon check-in we walked into a cool, calming guest house with relaxing feel good music playing! There was a large assortment of hot and cold beverages and the amenities provided were a plus! We arrived pretty late on Christmas night. We were very pleasantly surprised to find the fridge stocked with water and other goodies. The Kuerig was fully stocked with lots of coffee. And there was even fruit. Peter checked in on us via text. We felt very comfortable and enjoyed SD from our home base. We would definitely stay again!

Peter was the best host so far my wife and I have experienced on Airbnb. He has been very forthcoming before, during and after our stay. Peter provided all the necessary information about the neighborhood (which is, by the way, awesome - some of the best cafes in San Diego are located in walking distance, e.g. Madison and Parkhouse Eatery). The place is very cozy and home-like. Peter has ensured everything (and beyond your expectations) is there (e.g. complementary drinks and fruit) and we felt very welcome. The guest house has its own entrance and you can spend time without meeting the host, although I suggest meeting him for a quick chat! He'll recommend places worth visiting depending on your goals of the stay. We will definitely stay there next time we are in San Diego!

Great place in a great area. The apartment was clean and comfortable with lots of nice touches like a well-stocked kitchen and great sheets. The backyard garden area was really peaceful and a great place to have coffee. Carl's recommendations for area restaurants were spot on, although be careful at Hash House as portions are crazy! What a charming place. We loved our stay. Everything was exactly as described, only better. My most important feature is always the bed! Comfy, which allowed for much needed rest after playing tourist all day long. The apt. was well stocked, clean, and had lots of really nice touches. The mirror in the closet was great and we loved the shower head. We tried several 4 star Yelp restaurants and they failed to impress. oh well. We should have used your reccommendations. There was a great little place around the corner, Poki Go. Thanks Carl, a great time was had by all!

The apartment was beautiful and the bed and linens were the most comfortable I've experienced in a long time. Everything about the apartment was great. The only problem was the parking which kinda sucked. Luckily, the apartment is close to really good restaurants and entertainment so you really don't have to drive anyway. Even if you do, you can usually find s spot if you drive around a while.

Nestled on top of a ridge, beautiful closed in backyard with solar heat pool, prime location... what else can you ask for? Andrew was an amazing host. He helped us with local advice and was always around if needed. The home was clean and had plenty of room for us and our two dogs. If staying in San Diego I'd highly recommend this home!

If Andrew's pool-house is available you should book it NOW before it fills up. Andrew has created an absolutely perfect space for any guest. The location is beautiful, the pool-house is spacious and has additional outside seating in both the front and back, and the pool was exceptionally clean, warm, and luxurious. Communication was prompt, easy, and friendly. Andrew is exceptionally thoughtful and available to help if needed. He left out a Trader Joe's insulated bag for my grocery trip and saved my life when my phone charger failed me...at 10 pm. Andrew loaned me a cable that night that I was able to use for the duration of my stay. Thank you for a lovely and memorable stay Andrew.

Loved staying at Andrew's home. It's literally a 10-15 minute drive from everything, on top of being very homey and comfortable. Andrew also offers access to a number of great amenities, including kayaks, a fire pit, swimming pool, etc. Would definitely come back and stay again!

I can't say enough good things about this place. Andrew is compassionate and helpful and is willing to go out of his way to accommodate people because he enjoys being that type of person. He was helpful in suggestions and directions, and was generous in that he let my husband and I borrow his kayaks and his bikes. Being from somewhere dry, we intended to spend pretty much every day at the beach and only needed a place to crash. Once our original accommodations did not work out, and we found ourselves at his place, we were just as happy finding things to do within walking distance and even hanging out in the backyard. The studio space is perfect for two people and there wasn't anything I really felt was missing. His pup Morty was really great at playing with our puppy and matching his energy level. He is well tempered, well trained, and personable. Having an enclosed front yard and back yard was not something we anticipated coming into this, but it turned out to be very helpful in the mornings if we wanted to keep the dogs separated but still allow them to have outside time apart from one another. Staying here allows you the freedom to spend as much or as little money as you wish on going out and sight seeing. There were plenty of things to do in walking distance and everything else was within a 10 minute drive. Next time we're in San Diego, there's no doubt this will be our first choice.

Excellent space, would highly recommend and will definitely keep it on the radar to stay here again. It was obvious that the unit was recently renovated, which was well-done. Decor and furnishings were nice. Kitchen was well-appointed. The complex is surprisingly quiet given its location, and is walkable to balboa park and central hillcrest. Hosts were very responsive and checkin/checkout was seamless. The central garden space was nice as well, unfortunately we had some rain during our stay and weren't able to fully enjoy it.

Great location! So central to all things San Diego has to offer! The amenities were great, everything was very neat and clean, and it offered a lot of seclusion. It was sometimes more difficult to find parking than we were lead on to believe, but hey, that's the price of living in a city! Overall, no complaints!

This place is great! Loads og good places in the neighbourhood, very nice rooms and a wonderful yard for breakfast or dinner when the weather is good (which I guess it usually is...). We travelled with two kids (4 months, 3 years) and this place suited our needs perfectly. We can definitely recommend this!

First Airbnb experience and it was amazing, thanks to carl & leni. We were able to check in earlier than expected which was great, killed some time walking around and getting to know the area. Soooo many great places to eat and such a great vibe !! The place was so amazing, upon entering & seeing the garden area w all the lights just made the atmosphere feel so relaxing. And the inside, literally jaw dropping. My boyfriend and I were both in awe after walking in & seeing how nice the decor was. The amenities provided came in handy for early breakfast, and theres always hot water! The bed has so many pillows which i loved. Honestly very glad that we chose this place as our first airbnb (:

The apartment was in a great part of San Diego! Close to restaurants and stores and easy to get an Uber to other places in the city. The apartment didn't have AC--it wasn't terribly hot but having a fan provided would have been nice. Shana was easy to get in touch with and gave some good recommendations for things to do nearby

Sabine's place was a nice relaxing getaway for us. The place is tucked away and peaceful with many books and maps inside to explore. The place is very small with little room to walk in the bedroom but it was fine for the two of us. No TV, though we didn't need one, but there was an iPod/iPhone speaker which was nice and we made use of. The place had coffee and muffins for us to enjoy in the morning and a fully functional kitchen with oven and microwave. Overall, it was a nice place for what we needed it for, nice quiet getaway, close to the grocery store and restaurants and easy to get to the city.

More than meets the eyes, to the point of being deceptive. Wonderfully private place on what appears to be a regular residential street. But once going down a flight of stairs on the side of the building leads you to your own private terrace and view of nature. Feels more homey than anything. Perfect for a couple's retreat more than anything.

The listing description was spot-on. The space comprises the entire top floor of a well kept craftsman cottage. Charming and historic. Under the eaves and lovely decor emphasizing color and comfort. Looked out the windows to trees and ferns and other greenery. Thoughtfully appointed, felt very welcome and "at home." Spotlessly clean. Felt safe in the immediate area, nice walking to coffee and restaurants; lovely homes in the neighborhood. Lucinda went out of her way to keep me informed about the space, and was available to help with questions. One thing I will note is that it's a long flight of stairs to the unit, which might be an issue if you have heavy luggage. The photos do show the stairs, which to me were not a problem; the climb was worth it for such a special place.

After many great stays at Mike's Place, we had the joy of staying at Mike's House! This place is a true work of art and has everything one could need for a perfect stay. Impeccably clean and exquisite amenities as always! The window seat was a wonderful treat for a nap and the porch was a nice place to relax. Can't wait to be back again!

This 1910 home is beautifully restored and lovingly cared for. It feels cozy and welcoming from the moment you are on the property. The front porch looks out through tall cacti, succulents and whimsical art installations, providing a pleasant sense of privacy. The courtyard is delightful! The interior offers alluring visuals with every turn, and invites you to relax and just be. We loved the cool breeze from the bedroom ceiling fan. This home is a very special place in a walkable neighborhood close to groceries, restaurants and freeway to elsewhere. We enjoyed a walk through the canyons to the San Diego Zoo and all of the museums of Balboa Park. Mike was available and invited questions we might have. I wish we could have stayed longer...

Historic home in an early San Diego neighborhood with updated conveniences. Convenient to everything. Would absolutely stay there again.

Very centrally located to a lot of things around SD. Great house and neighborhood. Mike was very communicative and helpful. It was a bit hotter than we were expecting and the AC window unit didn't work quite as well as I was hoping, but otherwise we really liked the house.

Mike's home is truly amazing. His century-old home is like a museum filled with Craftsman era woodwork and art. At the same time it is extremely comfortable with a spacious living room, beautiful front porch overlooking the amazing garden, and cozy day room. The kitchen is fully equipped and there is a spacious dining room. Mike's place is a short walk over the Vermont pedestrian bridge where there is a Trader Joe's and a well-equipped Ralph's. There are also many restaurants within an easy walk. We enjoyed Italian, Afghan, and Indian during our stay. There are also several casual and fast food places nearby. Thank you Mike for providing such a beautiful location for our visit to San Diego.

My partner and I have stayed in several AIRBNB locations around the country. This one, we concluded, was one of the most unique and comfortable. It was and is a privilege to stay here-- although it is nearly one hundred percent in the Arts and Crafts style, (architecturally and interior furnishings both), it is nothing like a museum. It is comfortable, warm and and created with amazing sensitivity to human comfort. We loved everything about the environment that Mike has created and look forward to coming back. The extras were also much appreciated-- great towels, bed linens, soaps, etc. we saw Mike, who lives on the premises but with an entrance to his home on the other side of the block, nearly daily, but he was never intrusive and there to help when needed. The neighborhood was fantastic-- we were on a quiet street, but at the end of the block was a footbridge that led to a thriving neighborhood with restaurants, groceries and other services. Lastly, the exterior environment of the home was a complete surprise-- a wonderful front porch with wicker furniture demanded that we sit and relax-- succulents and cactus filled the garden and created an oasis around our home. We miss the place already.

Staying with Amber was the best time I've ever had on airbnb! She is so genuinely nice and very communicative about how to make your stay with her go as smoothly as possible. The place is also very nice, and clean. The 2 bedrooms are on opposite sides of the apartment so there's a good amount of privacy. I'd love to stay with her again the next time I'm in SD :)

The apartment is really nice! It's close to everywhere within 15 mins drive. Amber is very responsive and nice! I will still stay next time!

Amber has been the best hostess I've experienced with airbnb so far. It was an incredible experience and she made the trip so much better with her friendly and fun attitude. The unit was beautiful, clean, with great views, in a great neighborhood, prime location, right in the middle of basically everything. Her and Xavier are just wonderful people and my friends and I will definitely be back to visit them again soon!

A 20 s home where everything has been restored and things work flawlessly.

Linda's place was sweet, charming, and fresh. It was perfect for us and close to everything. Her neighborhood is beautiful with so much character. Her front yard is filled with Gorgeous plants to look at and she gets beautiful light shining through at sunset. We loved the sunny California feel her place had. Linda was the sweetest most friendliest host, with a warm welcome. we left thinking of her as someone we will always remember!

Linda is a fantastic host. The room, private entrance, and private bathroom are fantastic. The proxsimaty to Balboa Park and to down to San Diego made my business trip easy and enjoyable. Daily I ran on the Balboa Park trails. Also Uber was responsive and quick any time I needed to get to the convention center.

Wow, what a pleasant stay! After having been to San Diego more times than I can count, staying in PB or Mission Beach, this Hillcrest stay was a perfect change of pace. The location couldn't be more perfect. Each morning we walked to get coffee, and then walked to the Museums in Balboa Park. There were so many great food options within walking distance, as well as bars and shops. The place itself was just what we needed, peace and quiet, a comfortable bed, spacious bathroom, and our own private entrance. Linda was super sweet, gave us a rundown of the neighborhood, and was there for us if we needed her. We will be back for sure. Thanks again Linda!

My stay with Linda couldn't have been more perfect. She has a lovely home in a fabulous location situated on a nice, quiet street away from the tourists areas—yet there is still plenty to do. What isn't walking distance (Balboa Park, shopping on Hillcrest main streets) is an easy Lyft or Uber drive away. Linda was a kind and gracious host...I am so happy to have had the opportunity to spend time with her. Thank you, Linda, I'll certainly be back!

Linda was an amazing host, easy to communicate with and provided us lots of recommendations for our stay! The location was perfect as we spent our time visiting all the different amazing spots San Diego has to offer we never felt too far away from anything. The room is cozy and comfortable and perfect for a weekend getaway. A close walk to coffee/breakfast in the morning (we recommend Kouche or Hash House. We would definitely stay here again!

Linda's place was absolutely perfect! The room and bathroom being separate from the rest of the home made us feel like we had our own little place. Not to mention everything was adorable and cozy, from all the greenery outside of the home, to the decor, the comfy bed and the beautiful bathroom. Everything was all so clean which made it that much more perfect. The location is pretty central to everything we did all over San Diego and we always had an easy spot to park after a long day. Last but not least Linda is a lovely host, super friendly and accommodating and communication with her was always easy. We sincerely hope we can stay here again. THANKS LINDA!
