Historic Site
“Founded in 1862, the Penn Center is the site of the first academic school for freed slaves. Today, it is one of the most significant African American historical and cultural institutions in existence and continues to be committed to the preservation of the Gullah Geechee culture. In addition to the museum, the site itself is available for tours year-round and is comprised of nineteen buildings related to and used by the Penn School, including Brick Church and Darrah Hall, one of the oldest buildings on St. Helena Island. It also hosts old burial grounds, Gantt Cottage (where Martin Luther King Jr. lodged), a Nature Trail, Chowan Creek and acres of pines, native flora and fauna. ”

“Looking for a quick beach getaway or boat ramp right here in town? The Sands in Port Royal is the perfect spot! Conveniently located at the southern tip of Port Royal, it has incredibly easy access. If you like, you can even drive right up to the beach and picnic right out of your car! Enjoy searching for and most likely finding a few sharks teeth, kite flying, or simply relax and soak in the sun. Next, take a light stroll down the accompanying boardwalk along Battery Creek. Look out over the vast waterway while taking in the warm coastal breeze and enjoying the wildlife. You will see dolphins playing, coastal birds wading and fishing along the water’s edge, and birds of prey flying above. If fishing or photography is your thing, the boardwalk is a great option. Completely free and open to the public during daylight hours, the Sands is a family friendly beach and a favorite local spot.”

Historic Site
“Learn the real saga of America at the Santa Elena History Center. Founded in 1566, Santa Elena was the first European settlement in North America. Her fascinating but little known story is one of religion, geopolitics, cultural clashes, war and struggles to survive. The History Center is now open seven days a week and is housed in the newly renovated, federal courthouse in downtown Beaufort. Today, the Santa Elena site is a National Historic Landmark, important for its associations with the 16th-century conflict between Spain and France for control of the New World. Located on nearby Parris Island, the site is also considered archaeologically significant and tours of the site itself are available.”
