  • The Wee Hoosie is idyllic! Very cozy but with everything you need, we enjoyed chatting with Angela and getting away from the hustle and bustle. Thanks again!

  • We booked a stay for my parents and Angela couldn’t have been more helpful. My parents also said Angela couldn’t have been more obliging or done enough to help - an outstanding host!

  • This is a perfect place to stay if you are touring the North. It sits on top of a beautiful hill overlooking the bay. The house itself is clean and comfortable. Perfect for two!

  • The Wee Hoosie is a lovely little stay, a really modern tiny get away.

    Brittany2020-01-10T00:00:00Z
  • Angela was an exceptionally open and welcoming host, and it was a pleasure to stay in her wee hoosie. The space was well presented, very clean and tidy, and exactly what it said in the description. The breakfast bag was a nice touch as it is quite far from the shops for someone used to city living, so that came in very useful. The space itself was cosy and neat, decent amenities, and heated up very fast which was great for a December visit! All in all, a lovely place to stay on a weekend break!

Welcome to my comfy Thurso pad. Just unlock the door, and you're home! Perfect for two, with luxury kingsize bed (that splits to two singles), kitchen alcove, washer, wifi, TV and bright shower room. Great for your night or 7 in the Far North. Just a short stroll away from takeaways and restaurants; and supermarkets too – create a tasty stovetop feast to enjoy in front of the telly. And relax.
The king bed splits to two 2 foot 6 inch singles - for two friends to share the room without getting on top of each other ! Here are some more some do's and don'ts to consider before you decide to book, starting with the do's first: Do book if: - You like the idea of an ensuite hotel room without the hotel bit, and with the privacy and freedom to cook, and do your laundry when you want to. - You are travelling light - maybe in a wee sprightly car - and need to wash, iron and wear again your small cases of nice clothes before dining out in style. - You are up to 2 cyclists. it is just (underlined just) possible to bring a maximum of 2 bicycles into the apartment. It's a tight squeeze round the front door; you'll need to take off your panniers on the street to get your bikes through the door. - You have outdoor gear you need to stack up in the vestibule, and want to hang up such as wetsuits, rucksacks and the rest to drip and dry there.
Perfect for enjoying Thurso Town Centre.
  • A good central location, comfortable bed, warm and cozy, great host

  • Jon is a great host who really took the time to show me round the place and tell me everything I needed to know. He also made sure to leave lots of information about the area including a map with locations of grocery stores and everything I needed to know. The place itself is cosy and neat, and I really enjoyed my stay there. Would definitely visit again.

  • Jon's place is perfectly located to get around town, and a great, cozy space to base yourself in to explore Caithness. The check-in process was flawless, and Jon has amazing tips for anyone who needs them! Thanks for a great stay!

    Christopher2020-01-08T00:00:00Z
  • Jon's flat was perfect for a short break and we had a great stay there this weekend. The unit is entirely self contained, very clean and cosy and has just what you need for a few nights in Thurso. Jon met us with a warm welcome and gave us a thorough introduction to the space before leaving us to our own devices, and was only a message and a few doors away if we needed anything. As we're familiar with the area we didn't require any the tips about the local amenities but everything was well provided for and I'd recommend this host and flat to anyone visiting Thurso or Caithness in future. Thanks Jon!

  • Bethany’s place is clean, comfortable and has plenty of room. Great to have such a roomy shower space. Betty Hill was a real surprise - such a pretty place - and Bethany’s place is well situated on top of the hill with a view of a beach out the back windows. Parking is convenient, it is a short walk down the hill to a lovely beach, and across the road is an attractive looking hotel with a panoramic view from what looks like the restaurant and bar. Strongly recommend staying at Bethany’s place if you get the opportunity.

Our house in Bettyhill is central for touring across the Highlands of Scotland. The area is full things to see and do including, fishing on the River Naver, walking, surfing and cycling, with castles and historic places around. In summer you can enjoy the long summer evenings with daylight until after 11pm The house is located on the far North Coast of Scotland and is an ideal stop off on the NC 500 route.
The house has stunning views overlooking Torrisdale Bay and you have peace and quiet all around you. Most evenings you can enjoy the sunset from the living room windows. It is very handy for the village centre shop and the hotel but far enough away to enjoy the peace. The hotel is just next door and they have a bar and restaurant open from Easter onwards. Downstairs there is a wood burning stove with logs supplied which keeps the kitchen and living room warm and cosy. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking and we supply all washing powder, washing up liquid etc. The 2 sofas in the main living room are new and very comfortable. Plus we have a couple of chairs in the bay window to enjoy the views. There is also a second living room equipped with board games, a dvd player and even an old pump organ that still works. You will find that you have plenty of space for everyone to relax in with views from nearly every room. Upstairs there are 3 bedrooms where you will find Egyptian cotton bedding and cosy duvets plus all the beds are fitted with electric blankets for the colder nights. We supply everything that you need for a relaxing stay to get away from it all whilst exploring this very scenic part of the country.
Bettyhill is a crofting community and is quite spread out. In the centre there is a post office with a small shop and the Bettyhill Hotel with bar and restaurant. Down the hill by the museum there is a cafe which is open for fish and chips Friday/saturday in the winter and is also open during the day in the summer season. Bettyhill has a community swimming pool with jacuzzi and sauna as well as a gym.

  • This is a wonderful, homely place to stay .The house is lovely and full of lovely touches .I have never stayed anywhere where as many thoughtful items were left for us to use should they be required such as condiments, soaps, tea , coffee etc Gillian was great to communicate with and extremely helpful. The view from the house is spectacular and added to the enjoyment of staying there. We loved it and my teenage daughter asked if we could come back again! (High praise indeed) You won’t be disappointed by staying here . A firm favourite with us all!

Armadale House is a Victorian Mansion built in 1854 on the site of a modest farmhouse. Almost fully restored to its former glory, a lot of work has been done to make the house a home again and to welcome guests.
Armadale House is conveniently situated along popular driving and cycle routes. Making Armadale an ideal place to stop and relax for a few days or to use as a base while exploring the Northern Highlands. I've always felt that by the time travelers arrive at the North Coast they've been moved by Scotland's beauty and a chance to reflect and recharge is welcome. Once settled, guests have the opportunity to organize photos, write postcards and begin to look ahead to their remaining journey. With a wealth of knowledge about local attractions I am more than happy to help you plan your stay.
Armadale on the North Coast of Scotland is one of three places called Armadale in Scotland. There is also an Armadale on the Isle of Skye, and another Armadale in West Lothian. Armadale at the North Coast is home to just about 50 people, so don’t expect to find shops and cafes in this little settlement (the closest shops are in Bettyhill or Melvich). Armadale itself might not be the most exciting place, but it makes up for this by offering visitors a beautiful sandy beach that is split into three different section by two small streams running through it (easy to cross). Most of the times, visitors will find that they are the only people enjoying the beach, especially if you go there in the mornings.
  • Don't miss out on this opportunity. You'll get a huge room, gorgeous location and a warm welcome by your host Detta. And I'm not just saying that because she's a fellow Dutchie.

    Rob2019-09-10T00:00:00Z

Tubeg and Clashbuie make up the crofting township which lies above the harbour at Skerray. Shed No.7 is a newly built studio cabin with twin beds, en suite shower room, cooking facilities and a sitting area and balcony. The cabin is well insulated and cosy so perfect for all year round stays. It has superfast Broadband. There are outstanding views across to Island Niamh (pron. Neave) and beyond to the Orkney Islands. Our minimum stay is 2 nights but we know you will want to stay longer.
Shed No.7 is in a unique rural area of the Highlands & Islands of Scotland. Situated right above the shore on the north coast looking out over the Orkney islands to the east, there are views of the north sea all around. Nearby within walking distance is Skerray harbour where local people have boats for lobster and crab fishing and also for recreation. Skerray has a Post office and craft shop; a polytunnel with plants and home made produce; and a hotel with food and bar (Borgie hotel). Nearby villages of Tongue and Bettyhill also have hotels, food shops, post offices, laundrette and cafes. Beaches are all around with Torrisdale beach running from Skerray to Bettyhill. Farr bay beach is in Bettyhill and Coldbackie beach on the way to Tongue.
  • Irene's space is simply amazing. The view is something that I could easily spend the rest of my life waking up to, and the cabin is very well equipped and thoughtfully laid out. Irene is a warm and welcoming host, we'd recommend staying here without any hesitation!

  • We had a lovely stay at Irene’s place exactly as described , you won’t be disappointed ! Many thanks for your hospitality.

    Teresa2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • We absolutely loved our stay at Irene and Brian's cottage. The cottage offers sensational views and was very comfortable. The hospitality offered by Irene and Brian was a special touch. They provided some delicious bits of food and as we were there for New Year's Eve, they invited us to join them and their neighbours for a bonfire and fireworks, as well as providing a late check out to ease into the new year. We spent two nights here as we made our way around the coast and would have loved to stay longer! Highly recommended!

    Steve2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • Great spot overlooking the sea. Everything we needed was on hand. Brian was also kind enough to help us with a tow when got our van into a bit of bother.

  • We had a fantastic stay at Irenes little hut. We could not think of any better Airbnb because every detail was perfect. Irene and her husband were absolutely friendly and welcoming and we had a very nice chat with them. The view was stunning and there were a lot of information for nice walks and recommendations for restaurants provided. We really hope we can stay at this place again.

    Mara2019-10-22T00:00:00Z
  • Such a gem of a place, very well thought through and also very warm despite chilly October outside. This is also a great base for exploring the far North and all the beaches nearby. The views from the windows are one of the best I’ve had in AirBnb.

    Alexander2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • A great place to stay for a short break; thoroughly recommended. Sea views, great sunrises, and very quiet. Microwave, 2 ring hob and small fridge, so fine for basic cooking. Good chat with the owners.

    Andy2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • Everything is just as in the pictures - even better! Irene and Brian were attentive and cheerful hosts and made our stay a great experience. There is nothing better than enjoying a hot tea and scones with a view of the North sea.

Waken in the morning and step out the door onto the beach. Walk a mile and a half through the amazing white sands and through some of the most spectacular dunes you will ever find. Balnakeil is surrounded by an abundance of wildlife and plants - it is renowned for being a bird watcher's paradise. Balnakeil Beach Bothy has the same exceptionally high standards as the magnificent Balnakeil House which is on the same estate, and as Dignity and Time in the Borders. With an open plan living area and Anta furnishings, this is a sumptuous and welcoming spot to return to. Although it is very compact, a great deal of thought has gone into providing all the essentials and far more. A new window has been thoughtfully introduced so that you can gaze across the bay whilst enjoying your meals at the kitchen table. It's easy to develop a habit of taking a stroll along the beach to the end of the Faraid Head peninsula before breakfast and late in the evening. It's quiet here anyway, but at these peaceful times it's amazing to sit in the pale light and watch the waves and the wildlife: puffins, seals, dolphins, and the occasional otter, oblivious to the human presence. The coast is one of contrasts: long flat sands and dunes, huge towering cliffs, rugged hills and barren moorland - there is no better place to stay and enjoy the natural beauty which the North West highlands has to offer than in our very own magical Beach Bothy. This is a perfect place for solitude, for romance or for those who love the best of scenery and surroundings.
The Beach Bothy comprises of: a small hall where you can hang your coats; a bedroom with a lovely wooden King size bed, memory foam mattress and adequate clothes storage; a bathroom including a shower, sink and toilet; and a main kitchen/ living area which is compact, but still manages to provide everything you require (a sofa for two, and a kitchen with all the necessary equipment including a smeg fridge, a small freezer compartment, a television and a table looking out to the beach).
Balnakeil is on the North West tip of Scotland, and while it may be a long trip for some, it rewards those that make the journey. With impressive beaches, hills and vast open spaces, it is just how you imagined the Highlands to be and more. Beaches and coastal paths await – stroll across the white sands, roam the Faraid Head, marvel at the sunsets, and even have a dip in the North Atlantic (not for the faint-hearted)! Balnakeil is heaven for bird watchers and nature lovers alike. Climb a Munroe - mountains like Ben Hope, Ben Loyal and Foinaven stand proud over the landscape and are a haven for walkers. For golfers, the Durness nine- hole course is the most Westerly course on the mainland. Fishing - Loch Croispol is one of the well-known Durness Limestone Lochs and it is part owned by the farm. During your stay you are welcome to go free bank fishing for wild brown trout here. Nearby you will find Cape Wrath, Handa Island, Sandwood Bay and the famous Smoo Cave. It’s an attractive walk to Durness (1 mile) to find the shop, pub and petrol station. Stop off at the Balnakeil Craft village on the way and peruse the local arts and crafts on offer, or buy some scrumptious chocolate at the well-known Cocoa Mountain Chocolate Factory. Balnakeil is truly magical, and no matter how you spend your time here, you will regret ever having to leave such a special place.

A cosy, luxury little bothy on the rugged North coast, just off the NC500 route. The cabin sleeps 2 people and towels and linen are provided along with a warm, Highland welcome.
The cabin is placed behind our family home but views of the local islands and shoreline can be enjoyed from your picnic table. The space is open plan with a kitchen and dining area and comfortable living area with a sofa bed. There is a small convector oven/grill with 2 cooking rings above.
Whether you are are travelling the NC500 or simply seeking the tranquility of the Scottish Highlands, Talmine is the perfect stop to explore the North coast. With beautiful golden sandy beaches and lots of opportunities for either loch or sea fishing, there's something for everyone. For keen hill climbers, Ben Loyal (Queen of Scottish Mountains) or Ben Hope (the most Northerly Munro) are popular with many other spectacular hills within easy reach. The local hotel is a 5 minute drive away, 2 other hotels are just a 10 minute drive away in the next village of Tongue. The local shop is a 5 minute drive away.

  • Warm and cosy especially when we arrived. The beds were very comfy with nice sheets and covers, and we liked having the dishwasher! All 6 of us enjoyed our long weekend and loved the scenery and local amenities. Before arriving Caroline got in touch almost immediately with any queries we had. We hope to return next year.

Would recommend her and the house anytime.

  • The pod was perfect in every way. In a very idyllic location with a great costal drive to get to. The pod itself was spotless, perfectly laid out with lovely little touches such as beers in the fridge and breakfast provisions. We stayed on a winter's night and the pod was lovely and cosy and you get to wake up to amazing views. A great stop off on the NC500 - the best place we stayed on our trip. Hope to visit one day again!

The Elfie Logpod is a band new luxury eco-pod with double bed, ensuite shower and toilet and kitchenette (with fridge, microwave, hotplate and sink) plus seating area with sofa and TV. Very comfortable and warm glamping with power shower and underfloor heating. Stunning views of the sea and islands from the porch and large decking area from the parking space.
  • We've stayed in lots of air bnbs around the world and this is up there with our top favourites! It was so cosy and well equipped and the view from the balcony was stunning. The pod is situation quite close to Coldbackie beach which was one of the nicest beaches we came across on the NC500. Would highly recommend the pod at Margaret's!

    Maeve2020-03-23T00:00:00Z
  • the pod is in a great location along the NC500 route, and the views from it were great. We had a lovely stay :)

    Samantha2020-03-22T00:00:00Z
  • Pictures do not do this place justice, very cosy and warm and clean. Margaret was a fabulous host

    Lotte2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • My partner and I stayed at this pod while travelling the North Coast 500. Cannot recommend it enough, Margaret has made it extremely cosy and charming. Immaculately clean and the balcony offers an amazing view.

    Tom2020-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • This was an absolute gem to find, fallen in love with this location not only for the heated flooring and more space than we thought (I am 6ft 3 and me and my partner found it easy to live there) but the view from the front balcony is absolutly breathtaking we were able to sit there for 2 hours and just watch the waves and birds. Very sad to leave but definitely will be coming back! Made to feel right at home it was the best place we stayed by far in our trip.

    Nicholas2020-03-04T00:00:00Z
  • Great view and nice little place!

    Alex2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • A really wonderful, cosy stay in the cutest cabin. Margaret was a great communicator and the logpod itself was thoughtfully decorated and had lots of nice homely touches (we loved the hot water bottle, candles and fresh farm eggs) . Thank you!

    Eilidh2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • Very welcoming host. Gave a tour on how everything works (shower, cooker etc). Has heated floors and a heater so was very warm. Left us fresh eggs from her chickens, which were amazing! Very comfy bed that is perfect for two with a TV (freeview). Shower was OK but went cold after a while so if there is two of you make them relatively quick (5 mins each) so you both get hot water. Absolutely stunning view of the ocean from front porch, perfect for a morning cuppa! 100% coming back to this lovely little scenic house. Recommend very highly.

We offer a bright comfortable double room with a shared bathroom in our second floor live-in flat. Perfect for those looking for a cosy place to stay. There is good wifi, blackout blinds, an electric heater, closet, table and chair, kettle with tea and coffee all supplied. Only 1 minute walk from the Thurso shopping precinct as well as the beach & coastal walks. An easy walk to and from the train station too.
A generally quiet neighbourhood, but close to amenities, river and beach walks.
  • Perfect place in Thurso. Central, spotless and easy to find.

  • Heidi was a very caring and nice host! She gave us many tips about what we could do in Thurso as well as on our further journey. The flat was very clean and we felt really comfortable in our room. We totally enjoyed our stay at Heidi's and would definitely recommend it!

  • I stayed at Heidi’s for two nights while at Thurso during a two week road trip through Scotland. I wish I could have stayed for longer! Heidi and Gary were amazing, warm hosts. The apartment was lovely and the room was comfortable. On top of that, Heidi and Gary offered great tips about what to do around Thurso. I followed their suggestions and had the best day. They then directed me to a pub in town to listen to live music and have a pint. The pub and music were fabulous and they even joined me! If you are looking for a great place to stay in Thurso, pick this one!

    Jonathan2019-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • Stayed here one night but wish my trip had more time planned in Thurso! The place is right in the middle and I could walk to breakfast at a cafe Heidi recommended (which was great!) The place was super clean and cozy.

Discover our magical little bothy in Strathy Lighthouse. Enjoy stunning uninterrupted sea views while sipping on your morning coffee from this cosy studio apartment. The lighthouse has been out of use since 2012 but is surrounded by dramatic coastal scenery that provides a wonderful setting for walking, wildlife watching, sea fishing and Northern light spotting. Situated in a tranquil rural setting 4 miles off the NC500, this comfortable retreat is the ideal place to relax, unwind and recharge.
The studio is small but perfectly formed with all mod cons for an ideal short stay. We fully understand the need for a good nights sleep and have a wonderful Eve mattress on a double bed for you to rest your weary head at night with a king sized duvet to keep you warm and cosy. There is a small, fully-equipped kitchen for you to prepare your meals. We provide tea and coffee. Facilities include free Wi-Fi, flat screen smart LED television (ariels do not survive on the Lighthouse so there is no terrestrial TV) , gas hob, electric mini oven, fridge/freezer, kettle, toaster, iron & (mini) ironing board, hairdryer, shower (no bath), linen, towels and eco friendly soap. Due to the space being so small it really is only suitable for two people. Unfortunately we cannot accept your human or fur babies. The surrounding cliffs are un-fenced and can be dangerous. Care must be taken at all times. We are mindful of our environmental impact so we use eco friendly cleaning products, reuse and repair what we can, recycle, compost and source items locally where possible.
You don't visit Strathy for the wild nightlife! The apartment is located very rurally (which is one of the things we love about it). There are places to eat / drink 10-20mins drive away (Srathy Inn, Melvich Hotel and Bettyhill hotel) and the villages of Melvich and Bettyhill have small village shops for your basic requirements. Thurso is 25miles away, where you can find a selection of restaurants, bars, supermarkets and other shops or hop on the ferry to Orkney for the day! Tesco deliver to the Lighthouse (you would need to be in to accept this as we do not live on site).
  • This is such a great place to stay - its compact but well organised and equipped, and absolutely stunning scenery. As its part of a lighthouse its remote and there are steps, but honestly really really worth the effort of getting there.

    Helen2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • Gem and Ike were very responsive and the bothy at the lighthouse was just as described! The weather was a bit dreary during our stay, but the place was warm and cozy. There are other domiciles at the lighthouse, but we only saw one other person there during our stay. The weather broke enough the second day for us to walk around and see the beautiful views, the sea air was awesomely refreshing. The last bit of road approaching the lighthouse is paved but with a few potholes, so patience is necessary to get on site. We wandered around Thurso, the closest main town (about 35 mins away) for a very nice few days to rest and recharge. Thanks!

    Adam2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • Ike and Gem’s lighthouse apartment will probably be one of the most amazing places you ever stay at. We absolutely loved it. Surrounded by rocks, water, wildlife and amazing views out to sea, it was exactly what we were looking for when wanting to get away from the city. Ike and Gem are also on hand to help with anything you may need at short notice. Couldn’t recommend this place highly enough!

    Sam2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Ike and Gem's place is extraordinary. The location is picturesque and we had a wonderful time there. 11/10. We cannot recommend it enough.

    Alasdair2019-12-01T00:00:00Z

    Sarah2019-11-25T00:00:00Z
  • Wow. This Air BnB blew us away. It is every bit as amazing as you might imagine. Do you want to experience the rugged Scottish coast in a lighthouse? Then go here, and enjoy the rugged nature, stunning views, fresh air, and splendid peace. The space itself has two super-comfortable chairs arranged to look out over the sea, and there’s a wee patio to sit out on if the wind dies down. Things are set up so everything works really well, and they thoughtfully provisioned the place so things like olive oil and coffee are right there. We genuinely relaxed here and I cannot recommend staying here enough! This is a case where we could not think of anything to add or change. We spent the days wandering along the edge of the ocean and exploring, and the nights we cooked at home or went to the local pub and star-gazed. We would love to return here!

    John2019-11-16T00:00:00Z
  • The apartment from Gem & Ike was really cozy and beautiful. The Check-in was easy with a Codebox. The apartment is in a perfect area where you can relax easily and just enjoy the view. It was very clean. There is anything you need for cooking (oven, stove, toaster etc..). We had two wonderful days and defintely would redcommend it.

The village Smiddy now converted to a cosy and welcoming cottage with room for up to four. Situated right on the Northcoast500 route it is ideal for a stopover or a full week’s self-catering holiday with the children with all the beautiful North coastline to explore!
Our cottage is situated on the outskirts of the village of Reay and comprises sitting room, kitchen, bathroom and two bedrooms, with a double bed and a single bed. A fold-down bed can be added to either room to make room for a fourth guest - possibly best suited for an extra child. Two beds in the smaller room is quite cosy but does fit! It is probably best moved to the sitting room for a fourth adult. Plenty parking off the road and we can store bikes under cover as well. Newly redecorated and carpeted it is cosy and welcoming!
This peaceful village is near to a sandy beach and picturesque harbour and Reay’s renowned links golf course is within walking distance. The village shop is very handy for supplies and fuel. Reay is only a ten minute drive to Dounreay and only ten miles to the town of Thurso where you will find shops, pubs, cafes, cinema, supermarkets, restaurants and walks and history in plenty. There are ferry services from Scrabster, Gills and John O' Groats proved a service to Orkney. Head west to Melvich (seven miles away) and you will find a shop, post office, café and restaurant and another beautiful beach! Worth noting that the nearest supermarkets are in Thurso ten miles away so please plan accordingly when shopping especially if arriving from the West. Again for eating out you have to visit Thurso (East) or Melvich (West).
  • It must be good as I’m back again - it still feels like coming home at the end of each day!

  • This was a great stop along the NC500! Everything we needed for a pleasant evening, and all the kitchen amenities for making a good breakfast in the morning. It was very homey. If you’re super picky about having a plush mattress then you might not be satisfied, but we aren’t and all had a restful night’s sleep.

  • We had a very nice stay in this house. The house is well equipped and our highlight was the use of the sauna. Just great. The host was very nice and helpful, we immediately felt comfortable. After a 5 minute walk from the house you are already at the stand and have a wonderful view. If we are ever back in Durness, we would definitely rent the house again.

  • Great host, very hospitable, Philipp has done a fantastic job building his holiday home. Was so lovely to have an evening with no TV. Thanks Philipp

    Ronan2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Kenneth and Fiona were great hosts, the property was beautiful and even better than we had expected. It had everything we could ask for and more, the little touches were lovely and we really appreciated the ring binder with all the helpful information. The place was a perfect mix of private/off the beaten track but still near enough a bigger town with everything we needed. Absolutely perfect week and would love to stay here again!

    David2019-10-25T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing experience. The pod was clean, cozy and warm and had all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay. The view is breathtaking. Thurso is a few minutes away and has three supermarkets, gas station and plenty of places to eat. All and all - highly recommend!

  • Great couple of nights in the stable. Really clean and comfy. The hot tub was fab! Will return.

    Adam2019-10-09T00:00:00Z
  • My partner and I had a wonderful time staying in The Stable. It was so well equipped for a self-catering holiday and in a great location which was within close proximity of a number of places of interest whilst also being secluded. The lodge is beautifully decorated and feels very spacious, and we also loved having the hot tub as well! The amenities were great and Fiona was a great host. We would highly recommend this lodge and we hope to return in the future.

    Emma2019-09-27T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful, extremely clean, comfortable, warm and cosy pod! Amazing hot tub with beautiful views, Fiona was great to respond and husband met us shortly after arrival to make sure we were ok and show us the hot tub. BBQ was great! Shower was very powerful, and the kitchen had everything we needed to cook! The bed was extremely comfortable and nice and big too! We couldn’t ask for anything more apart from possibly staying for longer! Best stay of our honeymoon so far! We look forward to another stay in the future!

Flagstone Cottages consists of two lovingly combined traditional labourers' cottages, dating from the mid nineteenth century. The Prince's Regeneration Trust took on the buildings as an exemplar project in 2011, & have spared no expense in restoring the original Caithness flagstone flooring, the slate roof, & the sash & case timber windows. Inside, the original box bed, fireplace and cupboards have all been returned to their former glory to present an interior that is of the highest quality.
The cottage was opened by the Duke of Rothesay in 2012, recorded by a commemorative stone at the property. This property would be ideal for anyone who appreciates high quality interiors and has a sympathy for heritage structures. Flagstone Cottages in the news... Walking distance to Dunnett Bay beach. Only 8 miles to Castle of Mey, and 15 miles to John O’Groats. Fantastic opportunities to see Orcas, Dolphins, Puffins, and the Aurora Borealis.
  • Flagstone Cottage is an absolute gem in the rough; such a beautiful home with all original features, beautifully restored. David is a great host, good communication and local tips. We weren’t too keen on the area itself, appreciate things can seem more bleak in February though, but it was sad to see a lot of abandoned buildings that clearly once been very beautiful (particularly castle hill). As we live in Cornwall, we had to give John o Groats a visit and then on to Duncansbury head which was well worth the blustery walk.

    Poppy2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Had the most wonderful time staying here. It was just what I needed! It had great amenities and it was super convenient having a little corner shop down the road. The house is super cosy and comfortable with a pretty cool box bed! I was able to use the buses to get to Thurso and John o groats pretty easily. I noticed there are some maps of the surrounding areas at the front door which is super handy. The heating was absolutely perfect for me, there is a wood burner but I didn’t get round to using it. Castletown itself is a little quiet but that was perfect for me as I was needing to escape the Hustle and bustle of city life. Would definitely recommend this place and I’m pretty sure I’ll be coming back again!

    Lucy2020-01-31T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to stay and great communication

    Tom2020-01-25T00:00:00Z
  • We had the best time at the cottage: it's incredibly cosy and comfortable. A short walk away, Dunnet Bay is beautiful and we managed to squeeze in a day trip to Orkney and some excellent coastal stomps. Can't recommend highly enough.

    Kate2020-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • We spent Christmas with our two dogs in the cottage and it was perfect, couldn't have asked for more. I only wish we had booked a longer stay! It is so cosy and has everything you could need. Particularly loved the box bed, haven't slept so well in a long time! The area is stunning, there are many beautiful places to walk and on a clear night the stars were breathtaking. The only slight disappointment was the pub as there only seemed to be a small back room for the public - which was empty and not very inviting. If you like proper pubs don't bother, the cottage is a much cosier place to enjoy a drink by the fire if you get some good local beers in! Communication with David was great and he quickly answered any queries we had. Would highly recommend.

  • Great stay, very relaxing and cosy and well thought out decor. Kitchen was well equipped. Good location for popping through to Thurso, also did a day tour to orkney from john o groats which is less than half hour drive to ferry. Recently refurbished cosy, warm and spacious family home in the centre of the village on the Kyle of Tongue, one of the most picturesque spots on the NC500. Perfectly located for lots of fantastic walks (e.g. start of walk out to Castle Varrich is 2 mins walk from the house), exceptional and empty beaches (many within 10 mins drive), excellent local pubs and restaurants (2 mins walk) and village shop/deli (2 mins walk).
Ideal quiet place to unwind and relax. You don't even need to leave your bed in my house to see some of the spectacular scenery! You could start your day with breakfast in the kitchen with the front door open looking onto the view across the front garden and Castle Varrich. After a day out of long walks in the beautiful surroundings and fresh sea air, what better than to have a long soak in the bath before settling down on the dangerously comfortable reclining sofa (try not to fall asleep, it's easily done!) in front of the fire with a wee dram whilst admiring the views. Or take a short stroll down to the local pub restaurant for dinner (I recommend their seafood). My home is perfect for families and friends alike. All beds are full size and just as comfortable for adults as children. The kitchen dining table also comfortably seats five adults. I was born and raised in this pretty, friendly village and have left you a list I've written of my personal favourites for walks, food etc. to give you some ideas, which I hope helps.
Tongue is a small, friendly village with a pleasant number (i.e. handy amount, but not so many as to spoil the rural nature we love) of tourist facilities. The location of my home is perfect for families with children of any age, groups of friends and those wanting to take part in the local outdoor pursuits such as hiking one of the munros, fishing and shooting.
  • Skye’s place is great, comfy beds, amazing views, sparkling clean and well equipped kitchen for making meals. *Note that out of season both hotels (for food) are shut on Mondays so buy provisions before you arrive!

  • We loved our stay in Skye's house. Great location to explore the whole North coast, from Cape Wrath to John o'Groats. But it would be totally understandable if you'd choose to stay in Skye's cosy and welcoming house. We particularly appreciated the small attentions there for our arrival like the shortbread cakes, the fresh eggs, and the homemade jam. We will be back, and we highly recommend Skye's house !

  • I could not recommend enough a stay at this lovely accommodation in Tongue. The house itself was spotless, well equipped and well lets just say I wanted to take that bed home with me (slept like a log). Outside the patio area is just fantastic, no noise apart from wildlife and views to die for. If you enjoy walking, beaches or just a chilled environment this is a great base. I look forward to booking again.

  • This place is highly, highly recommend! Skye is a wonderful host, communication with her was always super friendly, quick and helpful. Some goodies and recommendations on what to do in the area were waiting for us when we arrived. The place feels like a home away from home; it is spotless, cosy and with nice little details and a very well equipped kitchen. The views of the highlands from the house are great and at the same time you are close to a small shop and restaurants. Many stunning sandy beaches and coastal walks only a short drive away and so much to do in this beautiful and scenic part of the North coast! Go there and see for yourself, it's really worth it.

  • Amazing property. Spotless from top to bottom with lovely wee touches like jam and biscuits. Great location with out of this world views. Highly recommend.

17 Rowan House is a renovated croft house in the idyllic Strathnaver. It offers light airy rooms that are kept cosy by the aga range cooker and multi fuel burning stove. The light is maximized downstairs and is connected to the two bedrooms upstairs by a central spiral staircase. The master bedroom includes a balcony on which to overlook the beautiful countryside setting. Located on the River Naver just 10 miles south of Bettyhill and 33 miles north of Lairg. Perfect for exploring the NC500.
The house is heated by the Aga range cooker and the stove in the living room, all fuel for which is provided. The bedrooms are equipped with blackout curtains and velux blinds and wit the Egyptian cotton bedding you will get a very restful sleep. There is a travel cot in the house and a high chair can be provided on request. The house is set on croft number 17 in Strathnaver and guests are more than welcome to explore it.
Strathnaver is historical significance due to the highland clearances that took place there, more of which can be found out in the Strathnaver Museum in Bettyhill. We are also on the river Naver renowned amongst keen salmon fishers, tickets for which can be purchased in the post office in Bettyhill or fishing can be arranged on the beats by contacting estates. The range of beaches on the north coast short drive away and if the weather is right, no tropical paradise can compete with the crystal blue waters and white sands. Of course it wouldn't be the highlands of Scotland without mountains locally by to ramble up. Munro baggers could enjoy hills such as Ben Klibrek the second highest hill in Sutherland and Ben Hope as well to name a few...

The Hostel at Mackay`s may be a small hostel but what it offers is definitely not on a small scale, set amongst powerful mountains and coastal scenery commanding spectacular views over the North Atlantic Ocean. This true wee gem is owned and managed by Robbie and Fiona Mackay who pride themselves on the warm atmosphere and genuine highland hospitality on offer to all visitors.
  • It was one night stay. Room and hostel itself are clean and cosy. There was everything we needed in the kitchen. A little Spar supermarket is just in front of. A bit expensive for hostel, but was chipper other places.

  • The Bunkhouse has everything you need for a self catering experience, fully equipped kitchen, TV, WiFi, washing machine and Spar is just over the road. But the best bit is the location, stunning scottish scenery. If you do stay you have to visit one of the remote beaches and smoo cave.

  • We had a very nice stay in the hostel. It is very well situated, and our host was available. The living room is warm and fits for a cocooning moment, the kitchen is well equipped, the WiFi works. We stayed in November, and the heating seemed a bit weak : that's the only little inconvenience. Thank you, Durness!
