Places to stay in Butterfield Lake
Better Farm's Attic Loft is furnished with a full-size mattress, a bedside lamp and fan. To access the loft, you must climb a ladder! Please keep this in mind when making your booking. The ladder is located on the second-floor hallway of Better Farm's main house. There is no door to the room, but there is a wooden panel you can place over the entrance once you are up for privacy.
Better Farm is a solar-powered sustainability campus, artist colony, organic farm and animal sanctuary set on 65 acres in rural New York State. Just 10 miles from the St. Lawrence Seaway, Canadian border, and Thousand Islands, Redwood is nestled in the foothills of the Adirondacks and is an outdoor enthusiast's paradise. The main farm house offers lodging to an ever-changing cast of artists-in-residence, sustainability students, and tourists. This is an old farmhouse, complete with three dogs, dozens of chickens on the property, several large rescued animals like alpacas and pigs, and even the occasional fly or spider finding its way inside. We hope guests will have realistic expectations when they arrive, and not be surprised that this 19th-century farmhouse doesn't feel to them like a hotel. That being said, the art on the walls, in-house wall-to-wall library, impressive gardens, and loving people and animals are sure to charm. Just about everyone who visits Better Farm falls in love with the place!
Redwood is surrounded by more than a dozen lakes perfect for swimming, kayaking, fishing (or ice fishing), or hiking nearby. Horse and hiking trails abound; as do dusty old dirt roads and paved roadways that are any cyclist's dream. There is a very small "downtown" strip in Redwood consisting of two convenience stores, two gas stations, a community greenhouse, pavilion, two bars, and an upholstery shop.
  • Thank you so much, Nicole and David, for an unforgettable stay! Better Farm is bursting with joy and charm, and a serious contender for the world’s coziest library. We miss it already and will be dreaming of your cooking for a long time!

  • Words can’t describe how amazing our stay was. Thank you Nicole and David for the amazing hospitality that you gave us. From greeting us when we first arrived and greeting us after our hike even when we arrived super late. Both your personalities and amazing space made us feel at home. We can’t wait to book back with you guys when we decided to hike another mountain in the ADK area... we just need to recover first from Mount Marcy 😂 Thank you so much again!! Hope to see you again. Ps, WE LOVE YOUR DOGS AND ALL THE OTHER ANIMALS💕 Much love, Maddie and Alyson

  • V cool farmhouse with an artist/musician vibe. Loved staying in the attic room! Awesome library with piano & guitar!! And the rescue alpacas were a great additional perk to the trip. Thx for a really cool place to stay! We loved it!

  • Nice hosts, amazing breakfast, trusting animals and beautiful trails to walk near by. A nourishing and educational place for life. Thank you so much for living and sharing this!

  • Amazing hospitality

    Corrinne2019-09-18T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful and serine! Everything from the hosts to the accommodations far exceeded my expectations. While drinking coffee on the deck and watching the sunrise over the farm while roosters crow around me I felt so at peace. I hope to come back someday.

    Oliver2019-09-10T00:00:00Z
  • This is thee place to go... loved it the first time, loved it the second time. If you're on the fence, just go, you'll be thrilled you did. "And if you don't know, now you know." This is very much an AirBnb you want to go to... and very much quite possibly return to (already planning my third visit there for winter time). Quite simply, the charm of this stay can't adequately be encapsulated in words, nor appropriately conveyed in digital images. Go go go, taste, see, experience! It's all so so good.

    Katherine2019-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • Their description of the space was clear and accurate. It served my purposes well for a single night's rest while passing through the area. It is a simple area for sleeping. We had enough privacy and lucky enough to have the whole 2nd floor to ourselves. The breakfast was delicious and homemade with ingredients grown on site.

  • IF YOU’RE WONDERING WHETHER YOU SHOULD STAY HERE, THE ANSWER IS YES!!! I cannot possibly express the genuine delight it was to stay in this airbnb. It has everything. It was easy to find. Parking can be a headache in some places, but it was so easy here: right next to the door. Easy breezy self check-in. Private entrances (plural)! The whole place is impeccably clean and incredibly cozy. As soon as you enter, you feel right at home. The bed is huge and so comfortable, and the same can be said for the couch. Even the rollaway beds are so comfy. Plenty of pillows and blankets for all of us, even in the cold of the winter. There’s even a little fan in the closet for those of us who sleep with a fan on. Dee has thought of everything. There’s coffee, there are snacks, ice trays, a spare toothbrush if you forgot yours, even a full first aid kit that glows in the dark!! 2 TVs, central heat, plenty of natural light, it was wonderful. There are even recommendations of where to visit in town and what to eat. But... the best part by far is Dee! She was incredibly gracious and allowed us to stay past scheduled check out, which made an enormous difference in the tone of our stay and departure. Her compassion and flexibility was so appreciated. Okay wow, this is so long now, but my point is: THIS PLACE IS AWESOME! STAY HERE!!

    Kaileen2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • Very cozy and clean place to stay. Thank you for hosting me

    Scott2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Dee and William really went all the way to make us feel at home. Their place is confortable and everything we needed was there already. Even some cereal and tea that saved our breakfast when we forgot to check where the nearest grocery store was!

    Marc2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Dee's place was a great place to stay while enjoying ice fishing all around the area. Everything is included as advertised and can easily sleep 3 to 4 people without any issues. Bill was a pleasure to speak to as he had great knowledge of the general area and was open to make recommendations. Very close to many different great fishing spots and lales. We will definitely be back!!

    Joe2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • This was nice private place that had just what we needed a convenient store close and plenty of movies to watch after fishing all day . It’s the best place to stay in redwood I’ll be there next time for sure

  • Randy's cabin is exactly as promised, and it's a wonderful place and spot on Millsite Lake! We had a great time, and would strongly recommend it to any outdoor enthusiast. We loved it so much that we are using it as a base design for our own cabin build this coming year! Neighbors Judy and Bud(and Rosie) are very friendly and welcoming :)

The Guest House This beautiful home sits on 50 acres of land with three ponds. The home was built in 2014. Sit out by the pond and enjoy the sound of the bull frogs. The lady of the house is a Reconnective Healer and life coach. Sessions are available. We are 3 miles from Alexandria Bay and one mile from the St. Lawrence River. Very quiet no neighbors. Great place to relax and get away.
All new. Very large room. King size bed and a daybed . Over looks a large pond. Family room with TV bar and Pool table. This room could accommodate another person. We would just need to know. Both myself and husband have live in the area all our lives. We can help you plan your activities and give advise for attraction to go to.
We sit on 50 acres of land. We do have a neighbor at the end of the driveway. Who is really nice. But we are in the country. It's very quiet. Almost like a retreat.
  • You can expect to be treated like an adult, and trust worthy. Visit Penny and Gene you will definitely love staying with them.

    Julian2019-10-07T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful, peaceful and quiet. Great hosts. Very helpful and Penny also showed us around their backyard...it’s the woods!

    Cindy2019-10-05T00:00:00Z
  • Staying with Penny and Gene was a wonderful experience. Their large home was beautiful, cozy and comfortable. They went above and beyond to make sure our stay with them was pleasant. We enjoyed the convenient location of their home to Alexandria Bay and all the Thousand Island sites. Their small dog, Lily, was very friendly and our guest suite was comfortable and well equipped. We highly recommend visiting the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton and taking Uncle Sam’s boat tours to Boldt Castle and Singer Castle. Also, JK’s Roadhouse is a restaurant that is close by and mostly frequented by locals which serves fresh fried perch on Fridays and an amazing Prime Rib on Saturday’s. We loved our stay with Penny and Gene and we would stay here again if we are ever in this area in the future.

    Marie2019-09-24T00:00:00Z
  • Penny and Gene have a beautiful home that would be perfect for someone traveling with kids. There was a big tv with movies and games and a nice fireplace. It was also perfect for me as I had a bachelorette party in Alexandria Bay, it’s close enough for a quick commute.

    Jeanette2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • Property is beautiful and very relaxing. Exactly as stated in description. Very clean, gave great local tips, location is 10/10 if visiting Alexandria Bay. Host was very accommodating.

(And we will introduce you to our "shoals" - aka underwater islands.) After that we will be right next door in our main cottage and available if you need any assistance during your vacation. We rented our cottage on a different website the past 2 seasons and received EXCELLENT reviews. This is our first season with airbnb - therefore there are not any reviews yet. The island is a super friendly group of neighbors. You are free to roam around the nature path that runs down the middle of the island
  • Cheryl, Jim, and their dog, Grady, were perfect hosts. Responsive, friendly, and so accommodating. This was our first time staying with hosts on premises and I cannot say enough about how gracious they were without ever being intrusive. The pictures don't do the cottage and space justice. We chased sunsets, caught over 100 fish (the kids counted), listened to the owls and loons at night, swam, explored, and sometimes just watched the river. Easy access to the mainland. Definitely stop for Nav's popcorn! Can't wait to go back!

  • Jim and Cheryl’s guest cottage is the perfect spot to relax and explore the 1000 island area. We loved everything about our stay! We enjoyed fishing off the dock, swimming, renting their pontoon boat to explore Signer Castle and Alexandria Bay, playing with the many island dogs especially their precious pooch Grady! Our children enjoyed the sweet treehouse next door, nature walks along the trail and the behind the scenes tour and samples at their popcorn shop in town, Nav’s Popcorn! Jim and Cheryl are so kind to share their beautiful cosy cottage and were amazing hosts! We can’t wait to come back!

  • Don't hesitate to book this place! You will find it hard to stay in a more wonderful home. Jim and Cheryl are the most generous hosts - so kind, going out of their way to ensure we had the very best possible experience. Our boys were so sad to leave Mink Island, particularly Grady the dog. This is the best Airbnb booking we have had the joy to experience thus far. And the popcorn....

  • Cheryl and Jim are wonderful hosts and their cottage on Mink Island is lovely. We greatly enjoyed a couple of days relaxing, fishing off the dock (Jim thoughtfully got poles and bait for us), exploring the island, and enjoying a sunset cruise with Cheryl and Jim. The cottage is well-equipped and comfortable. My two boys especially loved playing with Grady, the very friendly dog, who was a great tour guide as we explored the island!

  • Just a wonderful overnight at Cheryl’s ! They met us at the boat ramp and helped us get set up in the cabin on the water for the evening . Owners have the young ones an extra fun ride on the boat! Took us out for a sunset excursion and in morning set us up with kayaks and paddle boards . After check out , we met them at their popcorn shop for some complementary bags ! Totally recommend !

  • This is not renting a house—this is buying a true experience. Cheryl and Jim really have a unique island property that gives allows you to truly experience life on one of America’s great rivers. If you want to tour around, take their tips—they really know the area. But if you decide to kick back on the island you’ll be treated to a terrific cabin with loads of games and activities.

    Julia2018-10-08T00:00:00Z
  • Talk about consummate hosts! From the greeting at the dock to the lovely bottle of wine, all was perfect! The cottage is lovely with excellent views - it was a chilly night and we cozied up to the fireplace for a real Thousand Islands evening. Highly recommended.

  • We really enjoyed our long weekend at Cheryl's cabin. It's a great place to unwind and catch up with family/friends. The sunsets are spectacular!

  • It’s a very dedicated and spacious place. We can tell that Grace put her heart in the place. Grace is a fabulous host and very responsive. We had a great experience staying here

  • Our family enjoyed a wonderful weekend!! The stay in Grace’s beautiful home made it perfect to enjoy our family time together and celebrate our moms birthday. Our thanks for all the extras amenities they didn’t go unnoticed and were warmly appreciated. The decor is amazing, (true to the period of the home). We’re looking at our calendars to schedule another stay at “a little piece of history”.

  • My four friends and I stayed at Grace’s place for our annual ladies trip. We choose a different location each year. This was by far our favorite house we’ve stayed in, thanks to Grace’s responsiveness, thoughtfulness and hospitality! There was ample space for the five of us to spread out, and enjoy comfortable sleeping arrangements. We also appreciated the fact that every possible need was met with the various amenities available throughout the house. The only minor issue we had was finding a room where we could all gather together on comfy furniture (couches, chairs, etc.) arranged in a conversational manner. We managed to work around that, however, and this in no way dampened our experience! Overall we had an incredibly wonderful time in this (not-so-little) piece of history!!!

    Kelly2019-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • Charming, elegant & beautiful home, conveniently located to A-Bay. Grace is a very thoughtful person with amazing taste in home decor. We wouldn’t hesitate to stay again.

  • If you're looking to stay in a beautiful farm house style home filled with great decor with many rooms, this is the place for you. Quiet and peaceful location, but only about a 15 minute drive to downtown Alex Bay. Grace makes sure her house feels like it's yours while you are staying there. This was my second time staying here and would love to do so again.

My place is close to parks, great views, and restaurants and dining. You’ll love my place because of the people, the ambiance, the outdoors space, and the light. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, families (with kids), and big groups.
This is a rustic bunkhouse with one full-sized bed on the upper level, one bunk bed and one single bed on the first level (sleeping space for five in total). The cabin is next door to an outdoor compost toilet. Please treat this like a normal, rustic campsite and plan accordingly with camp stove (or cooking over bonfire) or have plans for eating out in Alexandria Bay, Clayton, or Redwood) and potable water. Guests do not have access to the main farmhouse. The tiny home is equipped with basic solar-powered lights, sealed in with doors and windows, and offers unrivaled access to the beauty of the North Country outdoors. There is NO HEAT and NO AIR-CONDITIONING in the tiny home so please be sure to check the weather before booking and/or arrival. The tiny home is not available during the "off season" / winter months.
Better Farm is three miles down an old country road in the foothills of the Adirondacks. The Indian River Lakes Conservancy has several hiking trails just a few miles down the road, and we are surrounded by more than a dozen lakes, as well as the Indian and St. Lawrence rivers. It's truly an outdoor enthusiast's paradise. Better Farm doesn't have any formal hiking trails on the property, but you are welcome to explore all of our 65 acres of woods and fields.
  • Literally the perfect way to camp and still be able to charge devices and have a roof over your head! Perfect for romance and great for a getaway!!

  • Better Farm is the coolest most well rounded place I have stayed at in a while! They run their own radio show, practice their own farming and treat their guests as family. They made us breakfast on the spot as soon as we entered the kitchen. Wish we could have stayed longer!

  • Nicole's farm was perfect for my needs. When I returned to the farm after dinner there were a bunch of guests sitting around the table enjoying conversation with each other. The place was quiet and very close to the tourist towns around there but away from the noise and crowds they bring.

The Birdhouse is a private, rustic cabin at Better Farm. There is a full bed, small dresser, and solar lights. Full amenities (3 bathrooms, common area and 1 shared kitchenette for guests on the second floor) are available in the main house 100 yards away. Guests to the cabin are also welcome to use an outdoor amenities station, comprised of a composting toilet and gravity-fed rainwater shower, located approximately 30 feet from the cabin.
The Birdhouse is an unusual, rustic cabin with gorgeous views of Better Farm's garden. In spite of its rustic charm, full amenities of hot showers, a shared kitchenette, library and WiFi are just a few steps away in Better Farm's main house and are available 24/7 to all Birdhouse guests. Please note that there is no heat source in the Birdhouse; therefore please check the weather before you book to ensure you are comfortable during your stay!
Redwood is a tiny hamlet of only 600 people. The neighborhood is more of an untouched landscape: rolling country roads, hiking trails, pristine lakes and beautiful rivers. "Downtown" Redwood has two convenience stores, a small-engine repair shop, two gas stations, and a couple of pubs and eateries.
  • We’ll be back to better farm ASAP, maybe even next week!

  • A must stay for weary travelers willing to make friends with humans and animals alike! The aura of this place is incredible, and their commitment to wholesome living with the surrounding environment is so admirable. From day one I was hooked on Better Farm, and even extended my stay for 3 more days. This incredible place is a short, scene drive from Alex Bay, and totally worth it. The residence is very close to Butterfield lake for beautiful sunsets which we enjoyed almost every night. Nicole and David were super accommodating, and made delicious meals! (Better than any run of the mill food you find in the A Bay area). All of their animals were a plus, from the rooster alarm clock, to the alpacas and all the puppies in between. So pack your bags and stay in Redwood for a much BETTER stay than any other hotel could ever offer you!!

    Danielle2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • Better Farms has SO much to offer to its guests. It’s a quiet farm off the beaten path in a very small town. Nicole and David are awesome hosts and they generously share their entire home. They make excellent breakfast with all homegrown ingredients and it’s seriously the best breakfast I’ve ever had. I stayed in the Birdhouse, which is separate from the house. It offered privacy and I still had access to all of the amenities of the home. They have many other rooms in the house available as well. The farm is also a great opportunity to learn about sustainability practices! If any of this resonates with you, stay here and I’m sure you’ll love it! However, if you’re looking for a more conventional hotel experience and you’re not comfortable on a farm, this probably isn’t your type of place.

We met some awesome people, had amazing breakfasts, and it was a super close drive to Alex Bay. I loved the animals everywhere. The communal spaces had a unique vibe that I’ve never experienced anywhere else. I cannot wait to return.

  • Great place in the country close to everything the 1000 Islands has to offer. I would say if staying in this particular room, plan for your limber/short folks to stay up in the loft, as my 5' 10" friend couldn't stand up there. Nicole and David are really sweet people who returned all messages quickly and left us sweet treats in the mornings. I wish I had planned ahead a little more to take advantage of more of the things they have to offer, as it was I was in the area for a wedding and it was a place to lay our heads at night.

  • This place is just amazing! We were passing through town and thought, “alpaca farm?! Why not!” Best decision ever. Nicole and David are awesome and made us feel so welcome in their home. The farm is just the coolest place and they are doing great things keeping the magic alive. We stayed in the split bedroom/loft space and it was plenty of room for 4 adults and insanely cool. Plenty of bathrooms and spaces to explore even with multiple guests. Breakfast was epic! Do the tour. We all came home inspired and ready to implement the things we learned at Better Farm. We will definitely be back! Thank you thank you for an amazing time!

My place is close to parks, art and culture, great views, and restaurants and dining. You’ll love my place because of the people, the ambiance, the outdoors space, and the light. My place is good for solo adventurers and business travelers.
Better Farm's first-floor loft is located in the side entranceway of the main farmhouse. The sleeping nook is up a ladder over the washing machine. There is a curtain for privacy from the library (located directly next to the laundry room), but please note there is no door for this space and it is a sleeping loft over an existing laundry area/entranceway that other guests and staff may use. Better Farm is a sustainability campus, artist colony, and organic farm set on 65 acres in rural New York State. Because it is a communal living situation, the house's upkeep is left largely up to its guests. Cleaning up after oneself and pitching in are part of the atmosphere here! The staff does its very best to ensure a clean space by changing linens before new arrivals, sweeping and mopping rooms, scrubbing down bathrooms, and dusting. This is an old farmhouse, complete with two dogs, dozens of chickens on the property, and even (gasp!) the occasional fly or spider finding its way inside. We hope guests will have realistic expectations when they arrive, and not be surprised that this 19th-century farmhouse doesn't feel to them like a hotel. That being said, the art on the walls, in-house wall-to-wall library, impressive gardens, and loving people and animals are sure to impress. Just about everyone who visits Better Farm falls in love with the place!
Redwood is surrounded by 12 lakes perfect for swimming, kayaking, fishing (or ice fishing), or hiking nearby.

  • Better Farm is one of those rare places that make you feel alive — fully alive. My stay left me energized and awakened, with a grateful heart. If you are an urbanite, you may very well have the most peaceful sleep of your life here. You will hear rare birds calling in the evening, and wake up to roosters cockle-doodle-dooing. It’s an inspiring, earthy and artistic place — it will bring out your highest self. Added bonus: every room is filled with books, a true delight for bibliophiles! Nicole and David are the real deal, and they attract a community of authentic and interesting individuals. The dinner table conversation was thought-provoking and open-minded. I loved my stay!

  • I wish I could have stayed for more than a quick night! Nicole and David were genuinely welcoming and their (many!) animals all seem content and well cared for. It's a lovely space.

A unique house in the 1,000 Islands , in fact, on one of the 1,000! On the St. Lawrence River in Chippewa Bay. Read the reviews. Within easy reach of the mainland by our boat, your boat or rented boat. Amazing spot for swimming, boating, fishing, exploring and just relaxing. 5 acres with 1,000 ft of shoreline surrounded by a 400 acre nature preserve. Your dock is a one minute walk to the house. A one-of-a-kind spot for the adventuresome traveler. See the photos! Amazing sunsets and sunrises
MASTER BEDROOM: One queen bed with trundle underneath. Close to the bathroom. A window and door giving access to the back deck and view of the forest. This room has the giant California State flag in it. SECOND BEDROOM: One queen bed with single bunk above and also, trundle underneath. Two windows and a door giving access to the back deck. This room has the antique map of New York State in it. We also have a crib in here. BATHROOM: Shower, sink and toilet. Our bathroom is rather small as cottages on islands all have to be totally drained in the winter months. LIVING AREA: There are two couches, two Hermann Miller chairs facing the view. There is a little reading nook, and place to hang coats. There is a 16' painting of Sutter's Mill by George Mathis hanging in the living area, and well as 4 antique chandeliers suspended from the ceiling. KITCHEN: There are 3 stools at a stainless steel counter which is a kitchen island with the stove in the center. There is a Navajo design mosaic on the floor and an open design cooking are with shelving, The kitchen is fully equipped. SUNPORCH: This space is under the same roof as the house but one must go outside and then back in to get there. It's fully screened and great in the evenings. No bugs! It has a large oak dining room table with plenty of chairs. Great for dinner. Also good for reading, napping, or separate space for children. Our house is built on a huge granite slab made millions of years ago by the receding glacier. The River is in front and the nature preserve is behind. There is lots of outdoor seating in front of the house on part of this rock, and also on the back rock. Our place is not for the faint of heart, or the person looking for all the creature comforts. It is for those looking to explore, observe mother nature and all she has to offer. However ,it is very comfortable and well outfitted! Of all the places listed, hardly any are actually ON an island which, in itself, makes the experience unique. We have paddle board, kayak, canoe, rowing shell, etc. that you can borrow. Although our house looks close, it is not. You are very private with you own swimming area, surroundings and dock.
Our island sits in the St. Lawrence River and is one of the 1,000 Islands. The St. Lawrence is the boundary between the U.S. and Canada and the St. L. Seaway is in front with freighters plying the waters coming from all over the world on their way to the ports along the Great Lakes. You are coming to Oak Island in Chippewa Bay. We are on Oak Island too. You can see our house in the aerial view. We are close, but not too close. You will have your own dock at the back (also in aerial view photo) and own swimming place. Your house is very secluded and private. This is the perfect place for the traveler looking to get away from it all and relax. Also for the adventuresome. You will have all of Oak Island to explore as almost all of the 450 acre island is in a nature preserve. And you are in the heart of Chippewa Bay. We are about a 10 minute boat ride from Alexandria Bay, and about 20 min.car ride from Clayton. You can see Boldt Castle in A Bay, take a boat tour of the 1,000 Islands, do your shopping, have lunch, etc. In Clayton they have the Opera House, the Antique Boat Museum, many fine shops and restaurants. They also have a tour boat. There is a boat tour to Singer Castle on Dark Island right from Schermerhorns. There is also a Scuba diving boat that goes out from Schermerhorns
  • This is an incredible place to holiday. Far above expectations and a beautiful experience for my wife and I and small dog. Debbie and Peter are incredibly gracious and thoughtful hosts. We absolutely fell in love with their place. The architecture, amenities and views are way above average for the Thousand Islands area. The house is an incredible value. We will be back!!

  • Spectacular location We regularly vacation in the 1000 Islands, and this was our first time staying on an island. If you’re looking for a quiet, peaceful place surrounded by nature, this is it. The whole family enjoyed relaxing both in and outdoors and taking in the stunning views. Minutes from Schermerhorn marina and a short drive to A bay. Fishing nearby was awesome. Debbie was delightful and went out of her way to make our stay a perfect one. Highly recommended.

    Darek2019-07-26T00:00:00Z
  • Very unique spot, place is well designed and perfectly situated on the water. We went with our two dogs and had a great time. Debbie is a super cool, pet-friendly host that wanted to make sure our experience there was amazing and keen to know what we thought after. We went toward end of June, when water was too cold and at record flood levels...still had the best time there with the dogs! We’d definitely go back in August when you can swim comfortably and access all docs (hopefully!).

    Will2019-06-24T00:00:00Z
  • When we arrived, the house was very clean and contained everything we needed for our stay. The view of the Saint Lawrence River from the house was spectacular and the owner Debbie was always there for us whenever we needed something or had questions. The swimming area was perfectly situated near the house making it easy to jump in and out throughout the day and then either lounging on the deck in close proximity or taking a walk around the island or just relaxing which was so easy to do with the calmness of this place. We highly recommend it to anyone wanting a true getaway from it all vacation.

    Cliff2019-06-12T00:00:00Z
  • The bunk house is a fantastic way to vacation with your family in the thousand islands. Located close to shore yet far from the hustle and bustle of life, this location was perfect for checking out of the grid for a few days to reconnect with my family and nature. Deborah is a local expert and able to help facilitate boat rentals and other island necessesities. She reached out as soon as I made the reservation and even met me at shore when we arrived to ensure our safe transit to Oak Island. We will return again!

This private bedroom in Better Farm's main house has lots of beautiful light, a full-size bed, large armoire, ceiling fan and bookshelves. The room is on the second floor of the farmhouse, along with 6 other guest rooms, 2 shared baths, outside deck, and shared kitchenette with microwave, hot plate, toaster oven, coffeemaker, dishware and cooking utensils. There is a third, shared bathroom on the first floor, along with staff kitchen (where breakfast is served), and common area.
Better Farm's Han Solo Suite offers guests a private space amidst the goings-on of a solar-powered organic farm, sustainability campus, animal sanctuary and artist colony. The 65-acre property features rolling hills, open fields, forests, a marsh, pond, small fruit orchard, and vegetable and herb gardens. Better Farm is located in the foothills of the Adirondacks and just 10 miles from the St. Lawrence Seaway, Canadian Border, and Thousand Islands. There are more than a dozen lakes within a 15-mile radius offering great opportunity for kayaking, swimming, fishing, and other water (or ice!) sports.
Redwood is a tiny hamlet of only 600 people. The neighborhood is more of an untouched landscape: rolling country roads, hiking trails, pristine lakes and beautiful rivers. "Downtown" Redwood has two convenience stores, a small-engine repair shop, two gas stations, and one pub that also serves food. Alexandria Bay (the heart of the Thousand Islands) is 10 miles from Better Farm and has many seasonal shops, restaurants, an art gallery, and boat tours of the Thousand Islands.
  • Amazing farm and every room is a new delight. The hosts are amazing and thoughtful. The meals were incredible! My second visit but not my last! We are hooked!!

  • A truly special place to hang your hat, whether it's for a night or an extended stay. The hosts Nicole and David are amazing. The home is very cozy and welcoming. You are almost guaranteed to meet interesting people while there, if you want to. The vibe is very chill and the common area has books to satisfy even the most quirky taste. This is a farmhouse like no other. The animals are well cared for, the breakfasts are top notch, and the rooms each have a unique view of the farm. As a former resident, I am biased, since this place was transformational. There is even a radio station broadcasting 24/7, so tune in if you want to tune out. There are woods to walk in, scenes to paint, animals to visit, chores to help with, locals to meet, and the most serene lakes to dip your toes into. If you are looking for a true North Country homestead to experience, this is THE place. If you are looking for a few nights to relax, you have found it. It's close to many attractions on the St. Lawrence River, not far from the Adirondack Mountains, and surrounded by lakes. A true gem!!

  • This is my third stay with David and Nicole... so good, I went out of my way on this trip to stop and see them for a night. They were gracious and made the time to accommodate me at the last minute - total pros. And David’s breakfast was phenomenal. Kept me going for my long drive that day. Staying here is being as if I am in the company of friends I have known a long time. And it’s a fun space, too! All the llamas came to te fence to say goodbye when I left...

  • Nicole and David were fantastic hosts. We showed up and sat in the library with them laughing and chatting. Make sure to pet the new silver Newfie puppies Bonzana JellyBean and Jack. Breakfast was really delicious and we walked around the property saying hello to the pigs, horses and alpacas before we left. Thank you Nicole and David for the wonderful hospitality!

Not only was the farm interesting place to stay at, they also gave us a lot of tips of where to go to and explanations of directions (or even where the best sunset would be). They took care of making us feel comfortable and at home - I definitely would recommend it for everyone.

  • Excellent house built by the Amish. It looks like it was just built in 2018 or 2019. There are a whole bunch of bunk beds on the top floor for kids. I didn't expect to see such great construction at a lake, and I spent all of my summers at a nearby lake as a kid. Nice! The owner is very informative, friendly and fast to respond. Easy lockbox checkin. It's a family owned house and you have full access to everything, including kayaks. It is very quiet here. If you want quiet, this is your place. If you want to party all night, you will want to get a campsite somewhere. If you're up a bit late and having some beers with a friend and you're not blasting music you will be fine. There is no AC and the house's insulation is amazing. In the summer it takes some time to cool down at night. This is not a bad thing but if you're used to sleeping in the cold, you'll want to prepare. The road in is tight, so if you have a boat I'd recommend dropping that off on the way in at "Back Bay". It's an easy 4min trip to the lake house by boat. Plan ahead of time on removing your own trash. The nearest dump is a good 30min away. The dump charges and has morning hours. (This is normal and how it works at almost all lakes in the Adirondack region.) Many of the neighbors live at their lake house full time or 6mos out of the year and have been residents for a long time. I met one of them and they were really nice. The fishing is great. I caught smallmouth bass on crankbait and on worms. The fish jump, fight and taste great! There's a neat fish cleaning station at the house as well. There is no Internet connection but at the house I was able to get a bar of 4G. There's a signal booster which works occasionally - it's just tough to get a signal over hills and through trees. Overall, I was totally happy with Verizon and at any given moment I could go online to check email and had just enough bandwidth to watch a video. Overall the house is better than described and just a great place. Black Lake is a really nice lake with really great fishing. There's a neat guestbook to sign and fill out your favorite activities or memories. This is what AirBNB stays are all about.

  • Awesome place to stay, the photos do not do this place justice! It is breath taking beautiful scenery inside and out with a country feel. The house was beyond our expectations! Planning our trip back in 2021 starting tomorrow with a countdown clock... Ben and Tara were very punctual with replying to questions. I cannot give enough kudos to them and their wonderful home...

    Bill2019-08-17T00:00:00Z
  • The property was great pictures don’t do it justice. We held our yearly fishing trip here and couldn’t have been more blown away from the fishing down to the location everything was 5 stars, Ben and Tara are a added bonus. Weather you’re looking for a spot to fish or a family vacation I highly recommend this place.

    Adam2019-06-23T00:00:00Z
  • We had a family of 10 stay at this modern, clean and well stocked lake house. There was plenty of room for everyone. The hosts Ben and Tara were very informative and helpful. We loved the screened in porch and the view of the water. The kids loved fishing from the dock and caught a lot of perch. Also, it was cool watching the beaver swim across the water. The flat top grill worked great for cooking outdoors while overlooking the water. It was great peaceful getaway. We hope to return again for a longer stay.

    Jaime2019-06-03T00:00:00Z
  • I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a quiet getaway. Ben and Tara are remarkable hosts. They helped us with every question and seemed to think of everything we needed while we were there. The cottage has a lots of space, its beautiful and very comfortable.

Thanks to David and Nicole we enjoyed a lovely vegan dinner and breakfast, could relax in the library and play a little with their sweet dogs. We recommend it to anyone who’d love to enjoy some quiet time in nature.

  • This is not your typical airbnb, this farm is a place where people like to get away and enjoy the accommodations and atmosphere. Nicole and her husband were happy to have us and involved us in their life to make us feel like family. It was a one of a kind experience and we are grateful to them for letting us stay in their home! Highly recommend!

  • I was working on some field studies in the area, and Nicole and David were great accommodating hosts. I was the only guest for most of my stay and developed a special bond with their cat Raja who was my constant companion. My stay was restful, and I really appreciated being able to cook for myself and come and go at the rhythm I needed for my own endeavors. I was only able to have Nicole's breakfast once due to my work hours, but it was outstanding. If you seek a rustic, but well amenitied rural place with starry nights, whipporwill songs and a cadre of domestic and farm animals in a sustainable, lovingly managed setting, you will love this spot. I plan to stay again on my two upcoming trips to the area. I hIghly recommend!

  • I came here for a getaway from life while still practicing the lifestyle I love. I was expecting good, and got great! Nicole and David had the appropriate level of attentiveness without being invasive, and were available when I needed them for anything at all. Nicole is a fantastic cook, while also accommodating any food sensitivities. Peaceful, and beautiful farmsite. This will be my goto place to escape whenever I need it, and I have already regaled staff at my clinic of how I adore everything about my stay. I just wish you were closer to me! This beautiful home sits on 50 acres of land with three ponds. The home was built in 2014. Sit out by the pond and enjoy the sound of the bull frogs. The lady of the house is a life coach and Reconnective Healer. Sessions are available. We are 3 miles from Alexandria Bay and one mile from the St. Lawrence River. The bed is a full size not a queen size. In the other room is a king. Home is not child freindly. Very quiet, no neighbor. Great place to relax and get away.
Our home is the place to feel relaxed and comfortable. The bed in this room is full size not Queen. There is a beautiful family room with tv, pool table and bar. We have a outside fire pit. There is a coffee maker, microwave and small refrigerator.

  • A picturesque rural stay in the lower level of Gene and Penny's home. You will enjoy a quiet retreat into nature. Enjoy the hummingbirds buzzing about the feeder. This B&B has plenty of space, access to a billiard table, and some basic amenities like a mini-fridge, coffee maker, and microwave. Comfortable and clean. Penny maintains regular contact and gets back to you quite quickly, if you have a question.

This room features a brand-new pillow-top queen mattress, double window, closet, bureau, ceiling fan, and bird mural on one wall (hence its name!). The room's entrance is on the second floor of the farmhouse, along with 6 other guest rooms, 2 shared baths, outside deck, and shared kitchenette with microwave, hotplate, crockpot, coffeemaker, dishware and cooking utensils. The first floor has a third shared bathroom, along with staff kitchen (where breakfast is served) and large common area.
Better Farm's Aviary Room offers guests a private space amidst the goings-on of a solar-powered organic farm, sustainability campus, animal sanctuary and artist colony. There are more than a dozen lakes within a 15-mile radius offering great opportunity for kayaking, swimming, fishing, and other water sports. The main farm house offers lodging to an ever-changing cast of artists-in-residence, sustainability students, and tourists. This is an old farmhouse, complete with three dogs, dozens of chickens on the property, and even the occasional fly or spider finding its way inside.
  • Verry nice place, surrounded by forest an lakes. Many farm animals create nice unique climate. Lamas are cool. Food is extra tasty and worth recommendation.

  • This place is truly one of a kind. I have visited the Thousand Islands Region since I was a child and no other place I have stayed has been able to replicate the warm nostalgia of visiting this area in my youth. You will absolutely be taken care of when staying here and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone considering it.

  • Wonderful accommodations and fantastic hosts. Highly recommended.

  • Excellent weekend on the farm, and one of the most social Air B&Bs I've stayed at. We started each day with fresh homemade breakfasts and ended most nights with bonfires. Volunteered for a little farm work during the mornings, got some relaxing in during the afternoons, and saw the sights in Alexandria bay around dinner time. The farm is worth a trip on its own, and also a great place to stay when visiting ABay.

  • Michele was very responsive and thoughtful. She left a nice handwritten note and some yummy snacks to welcome us. The views of Goose Bay from the deck were amazing. It was a very relaxing weekend getaway!

  • Great location ok Goose Bay on St. Lawrence. Views are great from the large deck. We rented a pontoon for a day and used the floating dock with no issues. Fishing was incredible right off the dock. Caught numerous bass and crappie. Few perch too. Plenty of parking with access from private road. We were a group of 4 couples on motorcycles and there are plenty of destinations to ride to from the house. Everything was nice and clean when we arrived and Michele is very easy to get a hold of. Definately a recommend!

  • The family and I had a lovely week long retreat in Goose Bay Cottage. The bay is quiet and serene. Donna and Mark were very hospitable, being there to check us in and give us the tour. They arrived upon check out as well to ensure we had a great stay. They are not far if ever needed. Would definitely love to return to Goose Bay! Thank you kindly again! Brittany and Family

  • The fishing is always outstanding around there, but finding a quiet, available and clean place to stay with the normal home amenities and water access is definitely a challenge. These guys have a great and clean place that’s on the water with amazing views and in a quiet place outside of town but close enough for daily booze, food, and local attraction runs. Great place.

    Josh2019-06-29T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage hosted by Mark and Donna at Goose Bay is a wonderful retreat, which facilitates a broad range of options from quiet contemplation to active exploration. The cottage is situated in close proximity to the bustling Alexandria Bay with varying entertainment options. However, the cottage is nestled in a secluded area, directly on the water, with access only from a private, well-kept dirt/stone road. Access to the water is easy with a few short steps to the boat dock or via a pine needle laden hill to the crisp, clear water of the serene Goose Bay. The interior of the cottage is an open floor plan with a well-placed and attractive wood stove in the middle of the living area. A spiral staircase adds to the smart flair of the interior space and beckons visitors toward the upstairs bedrooms for a quality night’s sleep in the comfortable beds. The downstairs bedrooms (Master bedroom on the 1st floor) offer very comfortable beds with close proximity to the bathroom, featuring a shower with good water pressure AND a claw foot cast iron soaking tub. The new Anderson windows are easy to operate. We kept the windows open most days and nights. The open windows ventilated the cottage well and allowed the nature sounds to permeate the interior. Outside, the large deck with chairs and dining table offer a perfect venue for enjoying tasty meals created in the well-outfitted chef’s kitchen and on the new Weber Grill—or simply drinking-in the awe inspiring sunsets. The fire pit on the west side of the cottage was used several nights for camp fires around which our family made s’mores, laughed and bonded-a key objective for our newly blended family, during our vacation at the cottage. An abundant array of wildlife is easy to view at the cottage, ranging from the seasonal red wing black birds to majestic swans to lively chipmunks. My sons and I witnessed a beaver swimming in a nearby cove. At night, we witnessed the eerie, beautiful call of loons—a rare treat and stark contrast from the urban environment in which we live near Philadelphia. The fishing was fantastic with willing panfish, northern pike and bass. The fish were quick to take our spinner baits and flies. We kayaked/SUPed into the secluded creek coves on the eastern aspect of the bay and sailed our Hobie TI up to and around the famous Boldt Castle, which we later toured via the Uncle Sam boat tour line. With easy access to Canada, we day tripped to Ottowa, spending time at various museums (recommend the Bank of Canada Museum) and government buildings. The ByWard market with its many restaurants, pubs and flower/produce stands was a real hit with our kids. Ottowa is less then 2 hours away and is well worth the trip. The quaint town of Clayton provided entertainment for all. We bought souvenirs in a few of the many shops, which feature local arts/crafts. The free museum In town offered a surprising glimpse into the rich history of the region. The antique boat museum was enjoyed by all of us. I particularly was drawn to the working boat building shop and the wooden speedboat displays. If you have time, make sure to walk into the canoe room to see the sailing canoes! After the boat museum we watched scuba divers being briefed on the shoreline before they descended into the St. Lawrence to explore a wreck located just a few feet from the river bank. We look forward to a return trip to the cottage at Goose Bay. I have no doubt that the memories and bonding created from our vacation will be remembered for our lifetimes. Thank you, Donna and Mark for providing a very unique, cool and clean cottage to us and your future guests! Scott and Carolyn

  • This was our first Airbnb, so we weren’t sure how it would work out. We had a blast! We had a few criteria for our trip - water access, proximity to kid friendly activities, peace and quiet, and dog friendly. This home has all and then some. The views are spectacular, particularly for sunsets. Goose Bay is relatively shallow, so there is little in the way of boat traffic or noise. We essentially had the bay to ourselves. A dead end dirt road added to the serenity. The home was clean, a little quirky (all fun - spiral staircase, fascinating (not used) wood stove, and all around unique), and nearly instantly easy to relax in. We spent several evenings on the dock watching shooting stars. Fishing was great - either on the dock or by kayak, with largemouth and bluegill hitting nearly anything tossed into the water. The water was a little weedy in spots, but it didn’t deter one kid from regular dips into the bay. We loved the deck! The beds, chairs, couches, etc were all very comfortable, and the home had all the kitchen items we needed. It was a perfect blend of peace and quiet, water access, a touch of camping (lots of time outside), and close proximity to activities for the kids/family.

  • If you are looking for a quiet and relaxing location, this is the place for you. Amazing view and access to the water so if you have a kayak or boat it’s a good idea to take advantage. Easy access to Alexandria Bay and other nearby sites is also easy. The cottage is very clean and well appointed. Would stay again!

  • The Goose Bay Cottage was absolutely fantastic. A few highlights: - Incredible view of the St. Lawrence River - Close everything you'd want to do in the Thousand Islands Region - Thoughtful amenities such as a gas grill, a Roku with streaming capabilities, and a clothesline - This one may be a little strange, but it's worth noting; the Goose Bay Cottage has the sweetest well water coming straight from the tap! Donna and Mark were wonderful hosts. Friendly and informative, they took the time to get to know us and gave us some background information about the area! 10/10 would recommend to anybody wanting to experience all that the Thousand Islands region has to offer!

This is a private island on Butterfield Lake that we have been building for the last four years with a first-floor kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and living room. A wraparound deck surrounds three sides of the house with gorgeous views of Butterfield Lake. A second-floor balcony is perfect for having coffee or watching the loons!
Boat access only! This boat is one mile from the town dock and parking area. There is a floating dock for your convenience, and two bedrooms. One bedroom is on ground level — the second is up a ladder in the "steeple." Please note that the bathroom has a compost toilet, and that all details of the house are not totally finished. The living room windows are not trimmed out yet, the second floor has some unfinished sheet rock, and we haven't installed the kitchen island yet so your meal prep is limited to one countertop, a mini fridge, toaster oven, sink and plug-in induction stove. To get up to the "steeple," there is a ladder (most guests will probably opt to stay in the bedroom on the ground level). Also worth noting: Instead of a shower, we have a small claw-footed bathtub that's great for soaking (but probably not so great if you're quite tall!). Most guests will prefer to be swimming in the lake than taking hot showers, but this is an important detail to note! We ask that guests not use the indoor fireplace, as the drafting is not great during warmer months. We also ask that you please not cut food directly on the custom butcher block counter — there is a cutting board there for you to use!
Butterfield Lake is the second-largest lake in the area, renowned for its 11 islands, rock faces and water activities. Fisherman's Rest Island is a nature-lover's paradise, with totally unobstructed views of the sunset and peace and quiet that's unrivaled. Alexandria Bay and the Thousands Islands are seven miles away, while convenience stores and a local pub are just two blocks from the town dock. On the way to Alexandria Bay you'll also find a drive-in movie theater.
  • We loved the deck just as much as the house. It was the perfect place to hear loons in the morning, and relax in the evening after a day of fishing. What a magical place!
