Places to stay in Clogherhead

Places to stay in Clogherhead
Buttercup Cottage is an idyllic thatched cottage situated in the lovely seaside village of Clogherhead on the east coast of Ireland, a half an hour north of Dublin airport. Renovated and extended, Buttercup cottage provides 3 bedroom 2 bathroom accommodation, perfect for a holiday getaway. It is just 300 yards from the beach, perfect for swimming or kayaking. If you feel energetic enough you can walk over the head to the harbour, where fresh fish is for sale , or just meander along the beach.
Originally a fisherman's cottage, the house is one of five thatched in the village. It is a welcoming retreat, close to golf courses, beaches and walks, historic sights and only an hours drive to Dublin and the airport. Accommodation consists of a sitting room, double bedroom with ensuite shower room and a bathroom in the original building, with a kitchen and two more bedrooms in the new addition. It has a large enclosed rear garden with french doors opening onto a sunny stone courtyard. The original thick walls and high paneled ceiling in the sitting room give a charming and comfortable atmosphere. The main double bedroom retains its original features and has fitted wardrobes and an en suite bathroom The spacious kitchen is fully equipped with a cooker, fridge/ freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. The dining table seats six (or eight if needed) and double doors open onto the garden. The patio has outdoor furniture and we often enjoy breakfast outside. The main bathroom has a bath and shower. The rear bedrooms overlook the garden, one has bunk beds and the other is a double room, both have desks and clothes cupboards. A cot and high chair are available on request. The garden is enclosed and not overlooked, with plenty of room to play. Guests are welcome to use the plentiful fresh herbs growing in pots.
Clogherhead is a pretty village, and our house there is a short stroll to the beach (just 200 yards/ mtrs down Crooked Street. Although small, Clogherhead is well supplied with a pharmacy, butcher, post office, general shop and a few great music pubs. The restaurants offer a varied choice, with pizza being our favorite. The Blue flag beach is long and very safe for swimming with a long sandy stretch and some rock pool for exploring, we have a lifeguard in the summer. There are walks up onto the head, and along the beach that range from easy to strenuous. A favorite path takes you over the head (rocky pennisula) to the harbour with fish and shellfish are sold in the Fishermans Catch shop straight off the working boats. They do great fish and chips too. Recreational fishing from the pier is popular, and we are famous for our run of summer mackerel. There is an adventure centre on the beach, where SUP boards, kayaking and lots of adventure activities are available. Clogherhead is also well placed for non beach activities, with Seapoint and Baltray world famous golf courses 3 miles away. Drogheda, a heritage medieval town with a wealth of interesting historic sights is nearby. The famous Boyne River runs through it, with the Battle of the Boyne interpretive centre, Newgrange, an UNESCO world heritage site, Beaulieu House, Melifont Abbey, the High Crosses and round tower at Monsterboice all in the locality.
  • Beautiful cottage in center of village . Perfect base for a short stay in Clogherhead . The headland walk was easy to get to from the house and shops pubs, restaurants all close by . Would return .

  • A beautiful spacious cottage, clean and fresh and so close to the sandy beach. A minor problem with internet access was rapidly dealt with by Aisling. The Smugglers restaurant was excellent for a meal too. Breakfast is excellent at the nearby Forge Farm cafe.

  • We had a great stay at Aisling's. The house was comfortable, well-furnished, and clean, and there was plenty of space for all of us. The beach was only a five minute walk away.

  • We were staying at this cottage with our 3 children over mid term. It was the perfect base to explore the area and visit Tayto Park and Funtasia. The cottage was spotless and had everything we needed for our stay. Would highly recommend a visit.

  • The Buttercup Cottage is located in a remote village outside Drogheda. While getting to and from was a little more work than other Airbnb’s it still offered up a unique charm. The Thatch Building was charming...it was stylish and very comfortable. I would say due to its remoteness I was way more relaxed here than any other location on our European holiday. We savoured the day taking a long scenic walk along the coast. It was really special. The folks living in Clogherhead were kind, genuine and helpful. I really did enjoy this Airbnb! Thank you

    Paula2019-10-28T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage is fabulous. The bedrooms are spacious but still retaining the cottage feel. Having the garden at the back was great for the kids and being a 5 minute walk from such a lovely beach was brilliant too. There are a few nice restaurants in walking distance too (wish we had booked in advance as the pizzeria was fully booked). We really enjoyed our stay and Aisling was a super host.

Clogherhead is a beautiful fishing seaside village. There are beautiful walks along the beach, pier and an amazing scenic walk that takes you to a beautiful fish shop selling chowder and at the weekends fresh fish and chips. There is a local butcher/grocer, clothes shop, pharmacy, Chinese restaurant, roma restaurant, and two pubs. All amenities are only a five minute walk from the cottage. The village is a well kept pretty place with nice friendly people. We are eight miles from the large town of drogheda.
  • Fiona's house is beautiful and welcoming, just off the beach. We were late in arriving and Fiona was very gracious and explained where she left the key for us and how to get in. The weather was quite rainy and stormy while we were there, and it was lovely to snuggle down in her cozy house while listening to the waves and the wind howling. She has many thoughtful touches and amenities such as books and dvds.

  • Photos don't do it justice. Super homely large open plan eating cooking space with cosy extra couch room off it. Really bright and airy. Large private garden nice for eating out and toys for younger kids. Beach 50 metres walk away. Its like your own private beach. Found baby starfish on it! Ice creams can be bought on the beach and hours of fun on the soft clean sand. Super safe for babies and toddlers. The fish n chips are well worth going to the harbour for. Only an hour from Dublin. Felt like we were miles away. Loads of parking. Made for a v easy holiday. Really relaxing break. Fiona always easy to reach. Didn't meet her but communicated quickly and easily by text and email. Really friendly.

  • We really enjoyed Fiona's house. Everything was spot on, extra clean. 2 minutes walk to the beach. Nice back garden, plenty of space. We took our dog with us and he was extremely happy. Great food nearby. I fully recommend and we will definitely be back there.

  • A lovely house in a beautiful location. Very comfortable and spacious rooms. A cosy second sitting room and very comfortable lounge/dining room. Very warm and bright house with easy access to the lovely sandy beach. Great local pub, a very enjoyable walk across the headland to the harbour where there is an amazing fish shop serving chowder, and a fish and chip van and a coffee shop. Everyone we met was so welcoming and friendly. There are so many places to visit in the area including the New grange monuments and Carlingford and lots of lovely villages.

  • We had a beautiful time in the cottage. Mark is a great host and we think that we'll come again. Thanks a lot!

    Esther2019-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • Wish we had given ourselves more time to explore the area around this cute cottage stay. The cottage itself was tricky to find in the dark but Mark's instructions were invaluable and he always responded really quickly! Nice touches like milk, bread and eggs very much appreciated. Suggest taking some DVDs if you like a quiet night in, on the cosy sofas with the electric fire on as TV signal intermittent (no fault of the host of course!) Hot tub really enjoyable and Mark quick to come pop it on for us.

  • Beautiful property in a peaceful location - everything you need for a home away from home !

    Lorcán2019-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • I would highly recommend staying at Mark's place! It is exactly as advertised in his photos and is a perfect in the country location that I was looking for! Listen to Mark's recommendations also and you won't be disappointed!

    Michael2019-08-02T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at Glebe cottage for 3 nights. Mark's attention to detail via message before our arrival provided the information we needed for a hassle free check-in. On arrival, milk, bread and eggs were left for us which was a pleasant surprise. The cottage had everything we needed and we couldn't have asked for a more peaceful and laid back stay. The hot tub was our main reason for booking Glebe cottage and it did not disappoint. Thank-you Mark and family, we will definitely be back!

This listing is for a double room, in the three-bedroom home where my husband and I live with our two cats.
You'll be comfortable here! We are very relaxed people.
We love living in this beautiful seaside village. The beach is a ten-minute walk from our front door, and there are two pubs and several places to eat in the village. The price you pay for rural tranquility is that it's not the easiest place to get to using public transport, so it will be more convenient for you if you have a car.
  • Anne's place is great value and very well located. Only a short walk to the village centre.

My home is in a quiet countryside area with lots of space. It is half way between Dublin and Belfast, a ten minute drive from the busy town of Drogheda, a 5 minute drive from the beach and easy access to all the beauties of the Boyne Valley.
Enjoy the comfortable bedroom or relax in the peace of our lounge or join us for a cuppa and chat or local tourism advice in our comfortable living room/ kitchen area.!
This area of Ireland is very historical. I would advise visits to Newgrange burial mound, Mellifont Abbey, Monasterboice Tower and Celtic crosses, Oldbridge Battle of the Boyne site and museum as well as a trip to the historical walled town of Drogheda with great views from Drogheda's Millmount museum. I reccomend a walk on the quiet beautiful beaches in clogherhead and maybe head to north county Louth where you can hike in the stunning Cooley and Mourne mountains and stop in the award winning village of Carlingford for a delicious meal. If you are feeling adventurous you could try some activities at celtic adeventures in clogherhead or carlingford adventure centre and (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN)ark.
  • It was clean with very comfortable beds. We were welcomed as though we were family.

  • Lovely bungalow in an ideal location for exploring. The kids loved the games that were left, as well as the DVDs. We loved the stove and the comfy sofas and the relaxation on a chilly winter's evening. The Centra a minute's walk away was a bonus, handy to pick up the milk that was forgotten in the shop for provisions!

  • When I first stumbled upon this apartment on AirBnB, it seemed almost too good to be true. There must be a catch! But everything was as perfect as it seemed online. Susanne is the most thoughtful, gracious host. The place is absolutely great, very clean and has everything you need. The bed is comfortable, bathroom and living area are excellent. Location is also incredible. Susanne was also very helpful since the beginning, available at all times whenever I had any questions. She had excellent restaurant recommendations and was of great help. She went way beyond to make my stay there comfortable and memorable. Totally recommend it.

The bed is very comfortable and bathroom clean. Especially the proximity to the beach is great .Checkin without problems. Was friendly and expected Susanne was always available. Even fresh water everyday and the dishes were always fetched for cleaning. It was not my last time there :) Thank you for all :)

Just a little further up the coast Clogherhead is a blue flag beach and just beyond Clogherhead is Port, a long stretch of beach with views to the Cooley and Mourne mountains. WALKS Head to the beach at Baltray and you can walk along three miles of uninterrupted strand. Continue across the headland of Clogherhead and follow the coast as far as you like to Anagassan and beyond. You can walk along the banks of the Boyne river at many points including some mapped trails. SHOPPING & EATING OUT Shopping is available in Termonfeckin where there is a petrol station, post office, supermarket and a farm shop selling local produce including their famed free range turkeys. Drogheda has a wide range of shops with restaurants, pubs, bars and cinemas for nights out. Alternatively guests can eat out at Termonfeckin's Triple House restaurant and Waterside Inn.
  • The house was perfectly suited to our needs. We had a family group of seven and there was loads of room - we didn’t need the sofa bed, which would have slept two more. All the beds were really comfortable with good quality, clean and warm bedding. The living room and dining room is very spacious, bright and warm - it can easily fit a big family group chatting and eating. The kitchen is really well equipped: if you are looking for something that would normally be in your kitchen at home, you will find it here too. The locality is very scenic, with lots of good places to walk or swim. Within a few minutes walk there is a good pub and beside that a golf club with restaurant and bar. Finally, the host, Inis, couldn’t have been more accommodating. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Bunker.

  • Wonderful cottage, warm, safe, clean, comfortable and in an ideal location. We would love to keep it as a family secret but it’s just too lovely not to share. Very suitable for families and friends alike. Wonderful hosting by the lovely Inis. Don’t hesitate to book.

  • Thank you so much for much for everything. This house is in a great location for everyone weather it be golf, beach, shopping, tayto pk or Funtasia for the children it’s also a great place for just a quiet break away. The responses to my emails were fast and I was thankful for it. Inis/ Elizabeth were great hosts. Spotlessly clean house and so well situated. Many Thanks Marie

  • This house was much larger and more charming than I expected. It was extremely clean with comfortable beds and a large living room to spread out in. The beautiful yard was surrounded by a high stone wall and had a comfortable table to sit at. Across the street was a large thatched roof home and bird sanctuary. It's an older farm house. The rear parking area faces some dilapidated farm buildings that aren't visible once you're inside or in the yard. It was a great central location to get to Newgrange, Trim Castle and other nearby sites. The washer/dryer was convenient to have with the family. I'd definitely stay there again.

    Michael2019-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • We were 4 adults and 2 children staying for 3 nights. The children aged 5 & 7 had a wonderful time and they really enjoyed the space around the cottage. With it being so close to Drogheda we used it as a base for both Funtasia and Tayto Park which were the main reasons for being there. The cottage was clean and airy and had everything you could possibly need. We would stay there again.

    Anne Marie2019-08-25T00:00:00Z

  • This is a very good place to stay, in the country but close enough to Drogheda for larger shops and Clogherhead for a really pleasant beach, especially for a walk later in the day. The host family are lovely and quick to respond to any query or request, their dogs are also lovely and a great source of amusement for my granddaughter. Also pleasing for her was having Netflix at the touch of a button:) Definitely recommend

  • The Arden is a wonderful Airbnb to stay at. Firstly, Grace provided exceptional details to find her place which made checking in late in the afternoon a breeze. We were met by Grace at the property which adjoins her own house making small requests very easy to do. The bedrooms all had on-suites which made traveling with our older children a lot more comfortable. The beds were very comfy and warm. There was a lovely sitting room that you could read a book in or watch TV as well as a full kitchen to prepare meals if needed. Grace booked us in to a new restaurant called World Gate which had splendid French cuisine at a very reasonable price. I would easily stay at Grace’s Airbnb again

  • A quaint spacious beach chalet. Clogher Cove is private and safe. The beach is a stones throw away and is delightfully uninhabited other than the sea life. My children have had a great week in and out of the water and examining the rock pools. The rain did not deter them in the slightest. We have had a very relaxing time here with lots of running, swimming and reading. We all feel better for it.

Our children spent hours in the yard with the great “fairy-trees” and on the beautiful beach. Port Oriel and Clogherhead are also truly special. We all had an unforgettable experience. Many thanks!

  • We had a great stay at Anna’s cottage. The beach is like 50m away from the terrace and you have an unobstructed view on the sea. The cottage is lovely and the local pubs are in walking distance. Don’t miss to buy fresh fish at the harbor which is an hour of hiking away from the cottage. The directions are on the dining table in the cottage. We had minor technical issues with the gate which were, however, solved by Anna within a moment. We could reach her every time we needed something. Thank you, again!

  • We had a wonderful stay at Ann's. The house is fantastic - there is so much space especially when you are there with alot of kids! The grounds are so inviting - you can spend all your days just wandering the enchanted forested areas and other unique features like the walled garden and the tiny island on the lake. The kids loved the gigantic trampoline and the friendly sheep! We only left the grounds once for an epic coastal walk 15 minutes drive away (with great fish 'n chips shops at either end of the walk). We were there during the winter and the house was so warm and toasty unlike other similar castle accommodation we've stayed at over the years. Ann was the perfect host and made everything very easy from start to finish - we're now planning our winter return!

    Feargal2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Barmeath Castle exceeded expectations in every way! More than enough room for 3 families visiting together, with endless fun around the grounds to keep the kids busy all day (ages 1 to 14). The farm and gardens were truly a delight for us all, and we enjoyed many special meals together in the enormous kitchen. Ann was a spectacular host -- it was a wonderful visit!

    Laura2019-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • Ann is a amazing hostess and I would recommend Barmeath as an amazing place to stay. The walled gardens are an absolute must to visit and are beautifully maintained - a tranquil place to wander and amazing for children to explore. Barmeath is rich in history and thank you for taking the time to share some of it with us. I would love to return with my friends and family.

  • This was a true treasure and privilege to be able to stay in.Cant imagine any other place for a small wedding or family reunion or special occasion ...This is a private residence felt really special to experience such beautiful grounds and history.Must make sure you get a tour of the castle and enjoy the owners unique personality and historical knowledge..The gardens would take your breath away and can not forget to bring a camera.Ann could not make you feel more at home and welcome ,we just wanted to move right in....Plus all her recommendations were much appreciated for dining and local amenities.

  • Barmeath Castle : Simply Awesome We had booked the entire castle for a family holiday. Ann is an outstanding host and went well beyond the call of duty to make sure we had a great time. Barmeath Castle was built in the 1600s. We stayed in the original “long house “. The castle is surrounded by an incredible garden. Go to Barmeath if you are looking for a slice of history preserved in time and served with a generous dose of warm hospitality. Do make time for a tour of the castle with Lord Bellew - it’s a must do !!

  • Ann’s place exceeded all expectations and I can only say that the whole experience was truly magical and memorable . The gardens were beautiful and every aspect of them offered a different vista and flavour . We really didn’t want to leave . We were there for a sad occasion but the house and the people we met turned our trip into a time that will stay with us for ever . Thank you

Lane House is a 3-bedroom (once thatched!) 300+ year-old cottage located in the idyllic seaside hamlet of Baltray. Lovingly renovated, it has every modern convenience but retains the old world charm that made us fall in love with it!(URL HIDDEN)
ABOUT THE HOUSE: Lane House is a 300+ year old traditional Irish cottage which we have lovingly renovated and restored. The cottage was originally thatched, and some of the other cottages in the quaint village of Baltray are still thatched to this day. BEDROOMS: The cottage features 3 cosy and comfortable bedrooms and sleeps up to 5 adults: * Master Bedroom with King Size Bed * Double Bedroom * Single Bedroom KITCHEN: Fully equipped with crockery, cutlery, utensils, microwave, oven & cooker, full size fridge & freezer, dishwasher, and washing machine (no dryer). BATHROOM: Spacious bathroom with whirlpool double spa bath, dimmable lighting (for a relaxing spa!), separate shower, and heated towel rack. Beautiful traditional grey slate tiles on the floor. LIVING ROOM: The generous and comfy 3-seater couch looks towards the large TV (Smart TV so you can watch YouTube, Netflix etc) and we also have a BluRay / DVD player (BYO DVD's and BluRays, we haven't had a chance to build up our own library yet!) We have tried to get a balance of modern comfort and traditional history in our furnishing and decoration; for example, in the hallway are historic pictures of Drogheda and Termonfeckin which we hope will give a little glimpse into the past of this wonderful area. PARKING: Ample free parking is available, either on the grass next to the house, or at the back of the house.
WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT BALTRAY VILLAGE: * GOLF! Baltray is one of the best places in Ireland to play golf. County Louth Golf Club has previously hosted the Irish Open and is one of the finest links golf courses in Europe. If you also want a bit of variety, only a couple of minutes drive away is a second golf course, Sea Point. * You can walk from the house to the beach (a wild, untamed, beautiful beach) in about 10 minutes... * If you walk along the beach to the right you will come to the mouth of the Boyne River, where it meets the sea. The river is the main artery of the whole Boyne Valley (and it's also apparently great for fishing).... * The 19th Pub in Baltray village is probably one of the cutest pubs you'll ever see... * There are lots of great places for a hearty meal nearby... check out the Triple House Restaurant and the Gatehouse Grill just down the road, or you can head into Clogherhead or Drogheda for plenty more high quality dining options.... * The villagers are beautiful people who we have come to know and love..... * We also love the village doggies, who will run around chasing tennis balls for as long as you will agree to throw them.... * I might have forgotten to mention that there's a bird sanctuary down the road - The Little Tern Conservation Project (for those that are into bird-watching)... * Last but not least, it's amazing to be so close to a major town (just 8km from Drogheda) and yet feel as if you're in the middle of the countryside - one morning we even woke up to find our big backyard field full of cows! This probably won't happen to you, but if it does, don't be alarmed - the farmer will soon get them out! :) LOCAL ATTRACTIONS: * Baltray Links Golf Course (18 Holes) / County Louth Golf Club @ 1 minute drive * Sea Point Golf Course (18 Holes) & Golf Club @ 5 minute drive *Sea Point Beach @ 5 minute drive (a lovely long open beach to walk, run, swim or collect seashells) * Beaulieu House @ 2 minute drive (a grand old manor house and gorgeous garden) * Newgrange and Brú na Bóinne visitor Centre @ 25 minute drive (famous Neolithic (prehistoric) passage tomb and museum) * Monasterboice @ 20 minute drive (some of the oldest and biggest carved Celtic crosses in Ireland (high crosses) dating from the 10th Century) * Old Mellifont Abbey @ 20 minute drive (stunning ruins of a 12th Century Cistercian monastery c.1142) * Clogherhead @ 8 min drive (characteristic seaside village with colorful shopfronts, a great pizza restaurant (La Pizzeria), a few thatched cottages, a nice beach. Trivia: "Captain Lightfoot" starring Rock Hudson was filmed here, you can still see the thatched cottage near the beachfront! RESTAURANTS: You are spoiled for choice, with a range of yummy dining options within a few minutes drive, including: * Triple House (Termonfeckin, @ 2 min drive) * The Gatehouse Grill (@ 2 min drive) * Baltray Golf Club (5 min walk / 1 min drive) * Sea Point Golf Club (@ 5 min drive) * La Pizzeria, Clogherhead (@ 8 min drive) And many other high quality dining options in Drogheda (@ 10 minutes drive) which are listed in our "House Manual"!

  • Excellent cottage placed in a great location, very near to the main attractions. Clean and very comfortable. The owner receives us in the check in and check out and suggest the best way to discover the main monuments and villages. Thanks for your hospitality! Great

  • This is a cozy cottage little home that's perfect for those who want to be close to the action (10 to 15-minute drive), but far enough away to feel like you're lost in the country. The Baltray beach, the Boyne estuary are just beautiful to walk along. Great for writers, and folks who want an escape that's got a homey touch.

This getaway location stands on three acres, half of them landscaped lawns, the other half woodland. These beautiful gardens are a perfect location for relaxing and enjoying a meal outside. Golfers looking for a piece of Ireland could be tempted by this self contained studio, 1km from County Louth Golf Club – better known as Baltray. Local amenities include pubs, restaurants, churches and the town of Drogheda which is 5km away. The property is 30 minutes from Dublin Airport and City Centre.
Guests have use of a seating area directly outside the entry as well as the garden.
  • John and his wife were great hosts! We spent New Year's Eve at their house and it was perfect. They gave us a lot of facilities and we got to know the beach around. I would definitely go again! The house was tastefully decorated and full of art. No doubt we will repeat to disconnect. Thank you so much! :)

  • We had a great stay at John’s place during the Fleadh Cheoil, The accommodation is well located for Drogheda and surrounding areas. The beaches are beautiful and only a short drive away. The apartment was very clean and well equipped. John and Terry were extremely helpful and always available if needed. Their dogs Beamish and Mia were adorable and so friendly. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this place and would definitely stay again.

Located on the golf fairways of Seapoint Golf Club - 200 yards from Golf Club house. Co. Louth (Baltray) Golf Club is next door. The Beach is a 4 walk, village 15 min walk. Village has golf courses, bar, restaurant , shops and churches. Very homely and cosy with open fire.
Very comfortable open plan living, open fires, patios to south facing private garden. 2 very large living rooms, spacious bedrooms. WIFI , satalitte TV, 50 inch TV screen. Very comfortable family home , that has all the comforts you would want. Located on the 3rd fairway and 200 yards from golf club house .
Termonfeckin is a preety village along the coast and next to the fishing village of Clogherhead. Boyce Valley is 20 mins drive, and Dublin s 35 mins drive. Co. Louth Golf course is next door and we are situated on the fairway of Seapoint Golf Club. 35 min drive to Dublin Airport.
  • The generouse, four bedroom house is near the sea and a golf course, but also very near to the monuments of New Grange, Knowth and Doth and the High Crosses of Monaster Boice and Termonfeckin. Also the town of Drogheda is worth visiting, especially at the time of the Boyne Music Festival. So it is a great opportunity to combine the ancient, the old and the present.

  • Wonderful spacious house for family reunion of 4 generations, 97 to 3 years. Location was perfect next to the beach. Lovely garden for 4 lively boys to play. Forge Fields cafe great recommendation. Only downside was the lack of enough hot water for showering but it did not spoil our stay in any way. Thank you Aoife.
