Places to stay in Carrickmacross

Places to stay in Carrickmacross
Hatch's Castle has many beautiful features including the Dome Hall, the original spiral staircase, and a wonderfully restored drawing room on the first floor, where you can sit down and relax. We're situated in the lovely town Ardee, which is surrounded by many historic places such as the Jumping Church and Newgrange. There are few restaurants around Ardee and several shops. You can find out more on my Face book page Hatchs Castle.
Walking inside Hatch's castle on the Main Street of Ardee is a feeling of space and tranquility. From that moment you know you have entered a castle that is waiting to be explored. There are four floors, each boasting character and an ambiance of true charm and comfort. Ground floor entrance hall with dome ceiling is also used as a dinning room. The 1st floor has the drawing room with an open fire. Here you can help yourself to a drink, relax, read and unwind. Breakfast can be served here in the large window over looking the Main Street. The 2nd and 3rd floor have a bedroom and private bathroom each. It is possible to see Ardee and its surrounding countryside from the roof. There is a cobble stone yard to sit in and a walled garden to enjoy during the summer months.
Ardee has been a wonderful place to be brought up. Everyone is so friendly and I have to say, I can get everything I need here. Sometimes I realised days have gone by and I never moved the car..! I walk along the old railway and up to the jumping church, great bike rides over the bog, where they cut the turf. Nice tea shops, clothes shop, restaurants and lively Irish pubs. Everyone knows everyone in a simple kind of way.
  • It is similar to having an apartment suite in a castle. Your suite will be located off a spiral stairwell. The castle is small but charming and cozy. Breakfast items that were made available with our stay were a loaf of soda bread, muffin, eggs, fruit, yogurt,Granola and tea. It was a very filling breakfast.

  • This is a unique stay in an actual castle squashed into a row of buildings right in the middle of Ardee! I stayed in the William suite with a room and bathroom down a private hall up a fairly tightly spiraled staircase - carry-on size or daybag luggage recommended. The room did seem to get a little cool in the morning - but it’s a stone castle in February and not unexpected. The room stayed dark with optional indoor shutters and curtains. The bathroom featured a separate soaking tub, rainfall shower and an unexpected toilet room space. The drawing room was inviting and comfortable with excellent WiFi connections. Hands down, the best part was the visit to the top of the turret! Keep going up the spiral staircase, through a fairly small door, a bit further and then you have a turret-top view of the village! Such fun!

  • Such a lovely stay at the castle!! Amazing hospitality with breakfast food provided, and games to play! The views from the top of the castle are lovely, would definitely recommend a visit! Would recommend having a car to get around and visit local places though :) overall, lovely stay!! Five stars!!!! :)

  • Nikki's castle is magical. If you are searching for a real castle where to sleep in, this is perfect. Everything is perfect, every detail is there for a reason and everything is super authentic. We loved to stay there for a night and Ardee is lovely too. Best castle ever!

Rathgillen Lodge is renovated stone cottage from the 1800's. With plenty of character, the living/kitchen has a wood burning stove set into a big hearth. There is a fully fitted kitchen , double bedroom and pull out sofa-bed.
Rathgillen Lodge is situated on a 125-acre working farm and enjoys beautiful views of the countryside. The location is quiet and peaceful and yet is only 1 km from the pretty village of Nobber and 1-hour drive from Dublin and 1 hour from Belfast. Meath is an area of legend of folklore, Vikings & Normans, castles and crosses and lots of monastic ruins to visit. It is also an area for great fishing, beautiful sandy beaches, horse riding and golf. Shops, pubs and restaurants are located nearby. We are situated 10 km from Cabra Castle Hotel and 16 km from Navan Town. The renovated stone cottage has lots of character and has oil central heating , solar panels and a woodburning stove. The accommodation sleeps 2 in the main bedroom with a pull out sofa-bed in the living area offering room for a further 2 people. It is suitable for all needs with wide doors and a wet room bathroom.
The cottage is situated 1 km from Nobber Village
  • This place was fantastic. It was a perfect size for us and the stove made us feel right at home, Peter provided us with plenty of wood for the fire also! Location was much better than we were expecting, just a mile outside the village and there was a few walkways we were able to take around and near the house. Peter and his wife were great hosts, really down to earth people and always stopped to chat to us if we met them, and their two dogs were very friendly as well! Would 100% recommend this place, we ended up staying longer than planned because we liked it so much!

    Daragh2020-03-31T00:00:00Z
  • Peter is wonderful. If you want a taste of Irish culture (meaning the sort of setting folks traditionally lived in and to meet an awesome local in a rural area), this is a great way to do it. He has put a lot of time and money into shaping up the place so you’ll hardly realize it’s an old cottage from the inside. He loves to share what he knows and he will give his perspective on things as well if you ask! Bakes scones and preps a cuppa when you check in. Friendly dogs on the farm. It’s just up the road from Nobber with a sign when you reach the farm, and he was walking out once we arrived. He also offered boots so we could walk about the farm after encountering him on one of his morning walks. Keogan’s was a good way at night to grab a drink in town and meet locals. Anyway, get off the beaten path and give Peter’s a try! He’s really awesome and I hope he does well in his little business and farm.

    Kayla2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay at this roomy historic cottage! The tour of the farm and up to the ringfort was priceless.

    Michael2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • Peter welcomed us warmly with a cup of tea. The lodge was perfectly fitted for our trip. I can definitely recommend a stay.

    Roman2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful quiet environment in a traditional house. Very good access to Dublin. Cleanly, quietly, everything available what you need. There was a milk and cake welcome and finally a trip to the farm quad. Thank you very much.

    Mariana2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • The stay with Peter was wonderful. We can only join the previous speakers, how warmly we were greeted with pastries and tea (although we only arrived at 11 p.m.), with such dedication and passionate care as he takes care of his guests is just great. A car is definitely needed. The price / performance ratio fits. Some excursions can be made from the accommodation: Newgrade, Belfast, Dublin, Mellifont Abby, Slanecastle. For shopping, we mostly drove to Lidl, 15 minutes away. We will come back in any case.

    Victoria2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • A great little getaway spot just a couple minutes outside the village of Nobber, we had a great time here. The lodge was clean and homely, with a lovely warm fire. Peter was extremely welcoming and we had a great chat upon arrival, with added scones! Would absolutely return in future.

My farm is close to great views and family-friendly activities. You’ll love my place because of the ambiance, the outdoors space, the Boyne Valley which is full of history, and Rathgillen House which is stone house that dates from pre 1850 and the walks around the farm where you can view the cattle, sheep, lamas, hens, alpacas and meet our friendly collie Lucky.
Our house is fully of history having been constructed in pre 1850 and we have the area map of 1853 which shows the stone barn. We are situated close to the historic Boyne Valley. Bru na Boinne , Trim Castle, Cabra Castle and the Battle of the Boyne site are all close by. Tayto Park is a theme park and a huge attraction for children. You can chill out in the house which has lots of space.
Our houses are located on a farm. You are 1 km from the village of Nobber. You have safe walkways through the farm.
  • Loved staying here! The place was clean and had everything we needed. Peter is so kind and his stories are great. The cute pups aren’t a bad touch either.

    Erin2020-03-18T00:00:00Z
  • The house is a warm, spacious, homely home from home in which Peter welcomes you with his homemade scones and tea. It's pristine and the beds are good, kitchen well equipped and the fireplace is the cherry on the scone. If you like the silence and serenity of the rural area, book Peter's home and/or adjacent lodge! Tanja

    Tanja2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • Peter has a true gift for hospitality. The farm is comfortable and charming, and Peter is a superb host. We were greeted warmly when we arrived and served the most delicious scones and tea I’ve ever had in my life. We were traveling with a group of 5 and we were more than comfortable. The farm is about 45 minutes or so outside of Dublin and it’s very serene. Peter gave us a lovely tour of the farm which included some incredible views. The beds were comfortable and everything was very clean. We will definitely be back to stay again!

  • If you have a large family, or a family with teenagers this is a fantastic location with lots of space for everyone. Relaxing and beautiful in the heart of the countryside this is the perfect spot for a family vacation. Peter is a wonderful and flexible host. We travelled from the farm for day trips to Waterford, Giants Causeway, Galway, Dublin and more. Coming home each night to the fireplace every night. Cant recommend enough. The teenagers loved it too - wifi was great. This is our second stay with Peter and we wouldnt hesitate to come again.

  • Grainne is a wonderful host. I stayed 6 weeks at her house in the beautiful countryside of Carrickmacross and had a great time there. The welcome was very warm and the check in was uncomplicated. After a few hours I already felt like being at home and the whole family always made me feel welcome. They also gave me brilliant tips what to do and where to go. I will definitely miss the nice conversations. The surrounding area is perfect to go for a walk. Carrickmacross is also a charming little town with a lot of historical background to discover and Grainne recommended some very good cafes to me. The food Grainne offered every day was excellent and rich. My room was very bright, cosy, and clean. The bed was wonderfully comfortable and I had enough blankets and pillows. The bathroom and the rest of the house were also clean and tidy. I really enjoyed my time and I would love to come back some day.

The guest house isn't far from Carrickmacross, and takes about 20 minutes to walk there. We had to go to a funeral next day, and Geraldine was especially supportive to us, and helpful regarding local information. Her husband even offered us a lift into town. Old workers cottage. In a quiet area not to far from a nice village. Halfway between Dublin and Belfast, close to Newgrange and Dowth and the battle of the boyne, for the younger children tayto Park and some nice beaches are approx 30 mins away. Linda will be able to fill you in with any local information needed. The house is heated by solid fuel cooker and also has oil heating. We are constantly refurbishing the house with the income from Airbnb.
We live on a narrow road you have to be careful there can be many obstacles you will find when you come around a corner for example children, animals or tractors.
  • Great! Large country cottage, short drive to Dundalk, Forkhill, and surrounding areas, less than an hour to central Dublin. It's warm, clean and comfortable, and Linda's a considerate host. Many thanks.

  • The Cottage is in a rural area and is completely restful. You have to have your own transport, it is about three kilometres from Tallanstown and there is no public transport. Though not impossible, taxi's aren't readily available. Nearby Ardee is a town with most amenities. We enjoyed our stay tremendously and you'll find Linda and James perfect hosts.

  • A beautiful house with a beautiful garden. A homely cosy feel as soon as you walk in, the fire in the kitchen is a lovely touch. Comfortable beds in all the rooms. We had a lovely couple of days here over New Years, and would live to come back in the summer to enjoy the decking overlooking the field.

    Katherine2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • This is a beautiful, peaceful haven of a place tucked away in the countryside but close to Carrickmacross and other hubs. The house itself is cosy, homely and warm yet spacious. It's tastefully furnished and every window offers a lovely view onto fields or the garden. Very well-stocked kitchen. A fantastic base for exploring. This is our second visit with adults and young children and yet again it has been a huge success.

    Barbara2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • This is a really great place. It feels really homely as soon as you come through the door. There is plenty of space and the house is full of all the amenities you could need. Rosina was great. She met us on arrival showed us over the house. She was also in touch through our stay and her communication was excellent. Would definitely recommend as a great base to explore the area.

    Adam2019-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • Rosina's place is a really nice country style house. Very spacious and cosy with some nice outdoor areas and garden. Great for a few quiet days away.

  • This house is amazing - very old world with lots of antiques, and stunning views over the country side. The gardens are beautiful (if you get the weather to sit out). There are 3 double bed rooms (all comfortable beds). Highly recommend

The local neighbourhood is rustic, country and quiet. The village with shop, chapel, school is about a quarter of a mile away.

  • Great experience. It is a very convenient location. The place is very clean, modern appliances, comfortable bedding, with wonderful touches added by the owners. Communication was always prompt and extremely helpful. I stayed with my three sons and we had more than enough space. We were also invited to see the cattle onsite, and that was such a fun experience for the children. Would definitely recommend Elizabeth's place and will stay again if back in the area.

  • My husband and I had a fantastic time in Elizabeth's beautiful barn conversion. Elizabeth was great for communication and check in was easy. The bed is really comfortable!! Kola (the dog) has loved his country walks and getting the run of the garden. It’s so good we have decided to stay another week! Thanks for being so helpful! x

  • We had a lovely stay at Catherionas for the Christmas period. Excellent communication throughout and Catheriona was very accommodating to our last minute change of plans. Thank you very much and we will definitely stay again.

    Joanne2019-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our stay at Pat and Kate’s place. Catheriona is a superb host , very friendly and welcoming. When we had problems with our hire car (avoid Europcar!) , both she and Pat were very helpful and supportive, showing genuine concern and going above and beyond to try to help us. The cottage itself is extremely comfortable , spacious and well equipped, set in beautiful countryside but within easy reach of town. The photos on the site don’t do it justice - it’s much bigger than we expected and much cosier . Would highly recommend to anyone wanting a peaceful break but what really makes it special is the hosts who live very close by.

  • Andrew's place was great! We came here with a family of 5 adults and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It's a close 5 minute walk to the pubs, bars, and grocery store. It felt very safe here as well! Andrew himself was very nice and thorough. He had water, tea, coffee, milk and butter for us if we needed in the morning. The place was very clean. The shower was a little confusing for us, but it could just be due to where we're from and we figured it out quickly. Andrew was so helpful so I'm sure he would have answered our call should we have had questions. I would definitely stay here again!

15 century Castle with a wonderful charm, take a step back in time. The dome dining hall is fit for a king and his family. And the beautiful drawing room to relax at anytime. Two bedrooms all with private bathrooms., washroom and cosy rustic country kitchen. Restaurants and shops all on your door step. It is clean, warm, romantic and cosy. You will have full access to your own kitchen and laundry.
Access to the rooftop, Drawing room, kitchen and washroom.
The wonderful part is we are a castle in the centre of a very happy busy little town with plenty of restaurants, shops and any last minute shopping you might need.
  • Everyone should stay in a castle atleast once. We only had the chance to stay one night, but we really enjoyed it. The place was a bit chilly on the main floor but the upstairs were heated appropriately. I would definitely stay here again. Nikki was very pleasant and great at suggesting things to do in the area. Do yourself a favor, Check Out “Brian Muldoon & Sons”. The Steaks are amazing. It’s within walking distance from the castle.

  • Quirky and fun! Perhaps not a true castle but having features of one. Had a blast exploring it top to bottom. Very comfortable and lots of room.

    Deborah2019-10-31T00:00:00Z
  • The castle is awesome and Nikki has done a fabulous job turning it into a space that can be shared with others, which is great. There are 3 rooms in the castle and you can’t lock your room door when you leave, which is a bit odd for me, but nothing was taken in our night there. It wasn’t clear to me how you pick which room you rent. I thought I had rented the whole castle but there was someone in one of the rooms when we got there. I was probably mistaken in my booking but it would be nice if it was more clear which room you’re booking or if it’s first come first serve so that confusion is eliminated but the castle itself and the experience staying there was really cool.

    Ryan2019-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • The castle was amazing and I would highly recommend it

    Gene2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • I had high expectations, and they were exceeded at every turn. Hatch’s Castle is a remarkable building and I had been expecting the thrill of staying In a castle complete with spiral staircase and turrets. But Nikki’s graceful touches make it so much more: homely furnishings, nice warm bathrooms, a lovely log fire, luxurious beds and a delicious breakfast. Thank you so much, Nikki.

Our room was new and clean, and we loved sitting on the balcony in the morning listening to the birds. Picking blackberries was an extra bonus too! Paul gave us use of his kitchen, and had left us some lovely breads and jams for our breakfast. • Maria and her family were so good to us. We were not familiar with the area and visiting for a wedding. This place is off the beating track but we had great directions to follow. It was lovely to stay in the countryside, the house is beautiful and hens greeted us a drove in. Maria drove us down to the reception and showed us around so we'd know how to direct the taxi home. This was so kind of her and very helpful for us. She even dropped my partner up to the bus stop at 7.30am the next morning. Her family are beautiful and full of chat, we really enjoyed our stay.

    Edel2017-07-02T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to stay, lovely house and room. Maria and Gordon were very nice, highly recommended if you want to get into the country side.

    Cillian2017-01-15T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay with Maria and Gordon. We were at a wedding in the Nuremore Hotel that was booked out, so looked around for a BnB and luckily we chose Maria's house. They are a genuinely lovely family. Maria offered tea on arrival and then offered to drop us to the hotel which was a pleasant surprise. Everything was organised for our extremely late return from the hotel. The room was very spacious and the bed was unbelievable. Mattress, bed linen and pillows felt like sleeping on a cushion of air that helped with the self inflicted headache. As did the powerful shower in the morning/afternoon. We had a great conversation at breakfast and I hope we didn't delay their family day trip. If there is another wedding in Carrickmacross, even if the hotel isn't full, we could be calling on Maria again.

    Niall2016-09-26T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed with Maria and her family for 4 nights and were welcomed with a cup of tea after a long journey. Maria was very flexible about our arrival time when we were delayed. The room is large, clean and comfortable with plenty of storage, towels and hairdryer. We had some interesting conversations and the children showed us how to make elder flower cordial. The house is in a quiet rural location but not too far from the town and various eateries. We will most certainly be booking another stay.

  • Absolute gem of a place. A step back in time. Even with the storms howling outside it was cozy and snug. Great view with the sun coming up over the sea in the distance this morning from the front door too.

  • We had a fantastic time staying in this cottage for 2 nights. It was a beautiful way to disconnect from our busy lives and spend some quiet time reading, eating and exploring the area. The beds were comfy, the cottage was warm and thanks to the instructions sent to us soon after booking - we had no problems locating the place, even at 9pm at night with no Google map to guide us!

  • This is a very unique place with a lovely old-time feel to it. Really enjoyed our stay in a very rural, isolated setting. Would definitely recommend, and hope to visit again in the future.
