  • Great location. Paul le really a service guy. We had a tiny mechanical problem and he arrived within 5min to fix it. we had a wonderful stay at this beautiful place as well as for the entire village.

  • Our time at Paul's was very pleasant. All rooms have ensuite facility's, the house was immaculately clean. Satellite TV if that is your thing and of course all in the beautiful Donegal coastal location.

  • Loved the wood decor and location. Spacious layout. Silver beach and Slieve League a must see. Nice woolen mill with sweaters made on sight. Confirm location with host. Not to difficult to find but “maps” took us to wrong town☹️ Paul was very helpful getting us back on track. Take your time driving the Wild Atlantic. (Wild ride😊👍)

  • Lorraine's house is lovely. Bigger than we expected, we were 5 adults and 3 kids and we had lots of room and 3 bathrooms. Good well equipped kitchen too. It's an elevated site with great views over the valley. Glencolmcille and surrounding area is just gorgeous. Would highly recommend a swim at Silver Strand, the climb down and back is worth it for the most amazing beach. Thanks so much for the warm welcome Lorraine!

Dolmen Cottage offers luxurious accommodation in the picturesque setting of Glenmalin, Glencolmcille. The Cottage is purpose built and has been meticulously finished to the highest standards. Set over two floors, it contains a spacious living area with sofa/bed, solid fuel fire and flat screen television. The kitchen has all mod cons and dining area. The large bedroom and bathroom are located on the 1st floor. The cottage is ideal for those seeking a touch of comfort, while exploring the area.
Dolmen Cottage takes its name from the Dolmen (Megalithic Tomb) situated on the private grounds of the property. The purpose built cottage, which is detached from the main residence, faces onto The Leahan Mountain, situated on the Sliabh Liag Peninsula. The property is set on a large plot of private ground, shared only with the property owner's private residence. The Silver Strand beach is a few minutes drive away, as is Slaibh Liag and the villages of Carrick and Glen, from outside the cottage, there are views of the Atlantic Ocean. Due to the remoteness of the property, there is no WIFI signal available within the Cottage. However, the main house has a booster system that can be accessed from outside the Cottage, or Margaret will be happy to allow access to the WIFI within the main residence, upon request.
Glencolmcille which forms part of the Donegal Gaeltact (Irish speaking area) is a place of tremendous natural beauty; mountains, lakes, sea cliffs and beaches; a place of quiet roads, stone walls and fuschia bordered lanes. It is an ancient corner of Ireland witnessed by the sites of dwellings and the tombs of the Megalithic period and by the cross inscribed stones of early Christianity. The Cloghanmore Megalithic tomb dating from 3000 BC, is located a short walk from the property. Glencolmcille is known as the most remote corner of Ireland, set in County Donegal which has been voted by National Geographic in 2018, as the coolest place on the planet. Making Dolmen Cottage a great destination for a unique and memorable holiday experience.
  • Stayed here one night and it was fabulous, very homely, would definitely go back again and stay for longer.

    Victoria2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Had a wonderful stay at Dolmen Cottage. The cottage is warm and cozy, and beautifully decorated with lovely touches, and it is set in a gorgeous location. Margaret was a wonderful host. A stay here is highly recommended!

    Kristi2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • This cottage is great. It is nice and quiet and the surrounding landscape is so beautiful. I would recommend this stay for anyone. The host was great. She greeted us and was very helpful with planning some sites and fun. She also added some great unexpected extras that I did not expect and made thing even better.

    Joe2020-01-25T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage is very charming, carefully decorated, warm and functional. Margaret and James are very welcoming, available and full of good advice.

  • Margaret was a great host. Such a beautiful cottage to stay in. So clean, cosy and warm. I would definately cosinder staying here again

    Cáitlin2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • Margaret's place is amazing. Everything is of the best quality (the furniture, beds, linen, shower, accessories). She is a perfect host and went out of her way to make our stay most special. We were a family of 3 staying here for only 1 night. We drove from Achill Island, did Slieve League on our way, bought some groceries in Carry. The kitchen is well equipped and it was just to pleasure to prepare dinner. If you look for a stay in the countryside, this is the perfect place.

    Thia2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • Margaret's cottage was brilliant. Her shortbread that she had waiting for me when I arrived was delicious! No expense was spared when she converted the garage into the cottage. Everything in the cottage was top of the range and it had everything you could need. Absolutely loved the fact there was no internet or phone signal at the cottage, already planning to book for longer to go and write with no distractions from the outside world. All in all a true home away from home.

    Tyler2019-12-15T00:00:00Z
  • Had an excellent one night stay at Margaret’s beautiful cottage. Donegal County is amazing and the cottage is the perfect location to end a busy Ireland vacation.

The Irish Times - Best Place by The Sea (April 2019, http://bit.ly/36peL6z) Irish Independent 'Best Play to Stay 2018' The Times named our pod 'Best Place in Ireland to Get Away from it All' (2017) An amazing contemporary mountain pod inspired by Irish archaeology and under new ownership, this bespoke 'one-off' retreat is a perfect 'minimoon'/Honeymoon destination in a wilderness landscape. Walk to the secluded beach or up 'your' mountain to discover the seven lakes.
  • BOOK THIS PLACE! YOU WONT REGRET IT! This home is not only unique, and beautiful, it's a great break from the busy outside world. It's remote, but still plenty to do in nature. We stopped at a local store and brought food to cook there. Enjoyed a long walk toward Port, plenty of sheep to keep us company along the way. The town closest was about 25 min away and had great places to eat or grab a pint. Do yourselves a favor and sit outside on a clear night as well, the stars are breathtaking!!!! 10/10 we will be back as soon as we can!!!!

    Marcus2020-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • We had a really great time there. The Hobbit Pot is really cozy and far from civilization. There are a few houses all around but you feel like they are deserted. The drive to the accommodation is an adventure. The accommodation is well equipped, everything is clean and the bed was very comfortable. Communication with Gary worked very well and quickly. Thanks to the great guest book there are also plenty of tips for great places. We can highly recommend the property.

  • It was very nice

    Alexandra2020-02-03T00:00:00Z
  • This is such a sweet little pod :) it's very well equipped with everything you need, and just perfect to enjoy few days of disconnection.. to connect again close to nature (and sheep). Lovely 🙏

    Marta2020-01-30T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic stay in the Cropod; the ultimate escape. Highly recommend to anyone. The local scenery is incredible and the pod itself is super cosy!

    Ethan2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic few days away in the Cropod. Unbelievable scenery and the place itself was spotless. Great little kitchen and comfy bed. Some questionable DVD choices but that’s just personal preference! :) Waking up to the views and the local sheep was a personal highlight! I would recommend to all A+

    Adam2020-01-23T00:00:00Z
  • We arrived in the dark, watch out for the potholes in the road so drive slowly! When we woke up we couldn't believe the view. Absolutely breathtaking. From the bed you just saw mountains and a lake and even geese appeared and flew onto the lake. Plenty of sheep around the pod too. All very cute. The next day we went to Assaranca Waterfall, Ardara, Mount Charles, Donegal town and finally Portnoo for the sunset in the beach. It was so beautiful. The day of checkout we woke up and the lake was nearly completely frozen! We travelled to Sleibh League cliffs and after another pothole filled road got to the carpark and walked up. It was some of the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen. We travelled back to Belfast through Killybegs, which was lovely too. Fantastic weekend. Would absolutely recommend the pod and will definitely be back.

The Escape - The Times: Best Irish Cottage Recently under new management, The Sunday Times selected this coastal cottage as the Best in Ireland. Fantastic mountain location overlooking 'your' lake, walking distance to beach & village. WIFI is included, the cottage sleeps 4 and dogs are allowed for an additional fee to be paid during your stay.
  • Wow, what a wonderful place with outstanding beauty steeped in the genuine wildness of Donegal. If peace and quiet with a little remoteness is what your looking for - hands down this is the place. If a traditional cottage had a story to tell, well I’m sure this one has many. An amazingly clean house with all the mod con which very quickly turns into your home for the duration of your stay. You’ll be hoping for a powerful Atlantic storm to blow across-the rolling hills so as you can experience the coziness of this littler abode, while a turf fire blazes, to warm your soul while you sip on an Irish single pot still whiskey. No tv required or WIFI necessary, but are both available, but just enjoy the stay for what it is and the opportunity to enjoy the simple life. Will definitely be back very soon.

  • Perfect place for a private getaway, views are amazing. Highly recommended

    Feardorcha2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • What a place! We are sitting at home now wondering if it was all a dream! It is the ultimate escape. The cottage is very cosy and so clean. Gary has thought of everything you may need on your trip. This cottage is very remote which is its charm so come well prepared with food, fire wood a good book and you’re all set for a totally relaxing weekend. The walk to Port is an hour each way but it is beautiful, scenic and highly recommended. Bring your winter wollies and wet gear if you are going to go exploring. We really hope to be back in the summer!

  • Great getaway. Highly recommend.

  • What an incredible space and location. Can't recommend this enough, and the perfect spot for a break.

    Niall2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • This cottage exceeded my expectations! If you’re looking for a tranquil, cozy and historic Irish experience in a remote location then Gary’s cottage is the place for you. The closest shop is not close...so bring all your own food to cook (the kitchen is fully equipped). We brought our dog and he loved being taken for walks around the area., we had his bed right the fire which he loved and refused to get out of. A trip worth mentioning as well is heading to Maghera Beach. It’s a massive beach that we had literally all to ourselves. Overall brilliant stay and would stay again!

    Caroline2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • This is such an amazing place! The cottage itself and the location are spectacular. Such beautiful scenery. The cottage has everything you need, we brought enough food that we didn’t leave the cottage except to go for walks. Really great place if you’re looking for a relaxing break. Gary is an excellent host. We had some car trouble and he responded straight away to help us. Even advised us what roads to take to avoid the snow! Absolute gem of a place!

    Michelle2020-01-27T00:00:00Z

Meenasillagh sits beside its own stream & waterfall. The new open plan living room & sleeping area has floor to ceiling windows and stunning views. Our nearest neighbour is way over the hill so you'll be completely undisturbed during your stay. The cottage and water is heated by stove using turf/ wood. A complimentary bag of each will be available on arrival. The kitchen and shower room are modern and well equipped. There's a gas-powered fridge.
This is a delightful secluded Eco-cottage renovated and cared for by the Woods family since 1978. With original stone cottage whitewashed rooms and a modern spacious extension visitors can enjoy old and new living spaces. Type 'meenasillagh donegal blog' into your search engine for a history of the cottage, lots more photographs and information about the area. We have our own spring. It's a fantastic resource. The crystal clear water arrives out of the mountain right beside the cottage and supplies us by way of a newly fitted solar pump. The place sleeps 6. There's a choice of beds. The two double and single half loft bed are supplemented by a settle-bed with sheepskin mattressing. It comfortably sleeps a couple of kids and it's always been our kids #1 sleeping spot. There's a fold-out 'click clack' bed if you prefer to use it. This is fantastic walking country. Set off in any direction from the cottage and you won't be disappointed. There's expansive mountain, sea and valley-scape to find yourself in - or get a little bit lost in. Kids always have a great time here mucking around in the waterfall, shallow stream and pools beside the house or venturing into the surrounding countryside. We don't fish (except off Paddy Byrne's sightseeing boat at Teelin) but there are lakes galore in the area and the sea is just down the road. There are rods and tackle at the cottage if you want to try your hand. The poet Dylan Thomas and artist Rockwell Kent both spent time living in a converted cow shed in nearby Glenlough valley (see photos) Kent went there to paint; Thomas was trying to dry out. The cottage has excellent 3G mobile phone reception so if you need to you can stay in touch with the outside world via the net. You can charge devices using the house solar charger but we recommend you bring your own battery pack as backup. We had the opportunity to connect the cottage to the national grid 20 years ago but at Meenasillagh we prefer to keep things as low tech as they've always been. No TV is a big plus as far as we're concerned. This is a place where you can truly escape information saturation and the effect is fantastic - time seems to slow down here and a few days somehow feel like a packed week. There are small rechargeable solar lights in the cottage but we mostly use candles (suplied) and the light of the fire. There's no bin collection in Port valley so you’re expected to remove your rubbish, recyclables and any perishable food left over from your stay. There are recycling containers near Glencolmcille. It's up to you if you want to leave scraps out for the local fox and badger population (see blog 'flora & fauna' page for video of badgers at the cottage) There's no vacuum/ cleaner in the cottage or the valley for that matter so we need a firm commitment from every guest to leave the place as clean and tidy as you found it. For anyone unfamiliar with washing up in this age of the dishwasher there's a sud by sud description in the cottage user manual of how to do that. The stone and tile floors are very easy to sweep/ mop and the stove's back boiler will give you plenty of hot water for washing up. All bedding, tea towels and house towels are provided. If you want extra large beach towels you'll need to bring those with you. Our laundry is done in nearby Ardara town and guests will need to collect bedding from the lovely, computer brained Margaret at Ardara Dry Cleaning & Laundrette and return it on departure. For more info and contact details please find us on our social media account that's known by the letters F & B! - our 'handle' is Meenasillagh Donegal. Feel free to get in touch if you have any queries.
The valley has less than 6 inhabitants - that's fewer than when we first visited in 1977 which we think is pretty special. Port - the stone beach and harbour - is a 10 minute drive down the valley. It's a great place to go for a picnic and an afternoon's exploring. From there you can walk across the mountain to Glencolmcille - it takes about an hour and 20 minutes. The thought of a glass of whatever you're having yourself at Roarty's bar makes the journey fly. By road Glencolmcille is a 23 minute drive away. For information on shops/ hospitals and other nearby amenities please visit our blog: meenasillagh donegal blog. There is a house information folder for guests at the cottage containing lots of useful stuff about pubs/ food/ beaches/ atms etc.
  • "This must be the place" If you really want to get away from it all, this is the place for you. This very clean and cozy cottage with equally cozy extension is fully equipped, although there is no electricity you will not miss it! The surrounding views from the big windows are amazing. The 2 hour walk to and from the sea was to say the least breathtaking, if this is how it is in the winter we can't imagine how it is in the summer, we will be back to find out, for sure. Our super host Jonathan couldn't have been more attentive, leaving the fires set to be lit on arrival and lots of turf, all his instructions were faultless and very useful. Thank you!!

    Paolo2019-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • Majestic location, cosy cottage, fully stocked kitchen, lovely host. If you need to 'un-plug' this cottage is great. The solar lights provided give you hours to cook, play games and clean up at night if need be. There is 5-bar reception for phone calls and data(if you need to post that insta-moment the same day). The scenery is spectacular. We went in November so it took the cottage a day to warm up with the stoves. Once it did it was very comfortable for the rest of the trip. A memorable trip...

    Eamon2019-11-17T00:00:00Z
  • If you are up for a wilderness adventure then this is the place for you. We went in early November with three children and I was a little apprehensive about long dark evenings with no electricity. But actually once the fire and the candles were lit and the head torches were on it was super atmospheric and I found myself actually looking forward to it getting dark! Superb location with incredible walks from the door. Our four year old managed to climb the hill behind the cottage, climbing up alongside the waterfall, and we circumnavigated the little lake on the top of the hill. We also went for a lovely walk down by the coast, though we didn't make it all the way to Glemcolumbkille which I would have loved to have done (next time!) Amazing communication from Jonathon - the most thoughtful host that I've ever had but never met!!

    Joanna2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • This cottage is a off-grid dream come true. You’ll have a huge area to yourself and can go wherever you want and explore, which isn’t standard for Ireland.

    Jonas2019-10-19T00:00:00Z
  • This is a really special air bnb close to one of the most beautiful and off the beaten track parts of the wild atlantic way. It is ideal for people who really want to switch off and immerse themselves in the sounds and smells of nature without electricity and artificial noise. Make sure to pack hillwalking boots as the ground underfoot can be muddy and wet, a head torch for reading- the candlelight can be a challenge for older eyes and cosy socks and slippers for those nights by the fire. The nearest shop is about 10km away so make sure to come with some supplies. We are so pleased that the Woods Family have shared their beautiful space and can't wait to come back again and again.

    Caoimhe2019-09-09T00:00:00Z
  • This place is magical. It really is very remote and wild but we loved it. You can see waterfalls from every window! The house has been so well thought out and everything you need to make life comfortable in an off the third cottage is their! Jonathon took time to write us thoughtful tips and ideas of what to do which was great. The kitchen is great for cooking! Some tips from us would be - bring slippers or warm socks, and if you have a low car and it’s wet we found it easier to park at the bottom of the driveway and walk the few minutes up to the house than to try and drive up the wet gravel and then turn round! Thanks again Jonathan and family for opening this hideaway up to the public :)

    Elfie2019-09-04T00:00:00Z
  • Jonathan's eco-cottage exceeded my expectations. Situated high in the spectacular Port Valley with it's own waterfall, "off-grid" is both literally and figuratively fitting. There is no electricity, but the cottage is so well-insulated and well-stocked that this feels like a plus. The beds are comfortable, the kitchen is modern, the cottage is spacious and the views are amazing. Jonathan was very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended!

    Bastiaan2019-08-31T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing getaway, unreal views just relax and chill. Just be prepared for a true off grid experience. We loved our stay definitely will go back when we need another detox from the modern world. Be sure to stop for supplies on the way and oysters in Ardara 😁

    Michela2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • Island View is an excellent B&B - the flat is really thoughtfully appointed, very clean and comfortable. We made good use of the drying rack! The location is very quiet - right at the end of the lane with a view out over the Atlantic from the balcony. It’s only a short distance to a superb sandy beach with excellent, safe swimming. My husband found some great spots for fishing and we dined on fresh mackerel every day. Mary P and her family are great hosts, kindly and welcoming but not at all intrusive. I would definitely recommend it!

  • The house stands on it's own little hill giving you a near 360 degree view of the mountains and a section of the coast around the village. The wind and rain was quite loud at times but the heating meant the house was warm and cosy. The kitchen is fully equipped and everything was very clean. We enjoyed our stay a lot.

  • We had an amazing stay. So much to see and do in the area. We didnt let the changeable weather dampen our adventures. Directions given were spot on and easy to find. The house is amazing. Four big rooms and exactly as described. 3 bathrooms is a huge bonus. (Showers in all 3) pretty much every home comfort you can imagine. Waking up to those views is worth staying here alone.

  • The place was fab! 3 double rooms and a twin room with three bathrooms mean it’s more than spacious. It was spotless when we arrived and there were freshly washed and dried towels there. There were a few DVDs there which were a nice touch for a chill night in.

  • Superbly appointed and well heated traditional cottage with a modern kitchen annex, sheltered from wind behind its neat little front garden, in perfect keep. An open fire was lit for our welcome. Our hosts, Pauline and her husband, were easy to reach, helpful and friendly in every respect. We loved the well sculptured back garden of grass and native bushes that slopes uphill into a springy lawn offering splendid hill and sea views. A home away from home where we felt accepted, even by the local neighbours, within the two weeks we stayed.

  • Just back from a 2 night stay in Dora's Cottage with my family, it was so amazing. Pauline has the house spotlessly clean and it has everything you want and need! Such a spacious cottage, and beautiful garden. We will definitely be back again, Thank you so much Pauline

  • A fabulous cottage in a perfect setting. The wood burning stove was alight when we arrived and gave a lovely welcome. Pauline was quick to respond in the lead up to arriving and Johnny dropped by to check that everything was ok. The layout is roomy and the house beautifully finished. Two bathrooms mean that everyone can access showers etc easily. The kitchen and utility area are very well equipped. We spent a great week there and used it as a base to drive around and discover Donegal with my 92 year old mother-in-law. I’ll be back to explore further and get some walks in.

  • Lovely location, great place to stay for a night while we explored Slieve League and the Donnegal area. The kitchen was well-equipped and the rooms were very comfortable. The only problem was during check in - we were informed that our booking did not exist and that we were at the wrong place. This caused quite a lot of anxiety. It was only much later, when the host returned, that the entire issue was resolved. Aside from this, we had a great stay.

  • A more perfect location doesn't exist. Literally the heart of the village sits at the doorstep. Walkable to all destinations in the Gleann and with plenty of space for our family. The enclosed yard was excellent for some outside playing and the driveway kept our car safely off the street so it wasn't a bother to the neighbors. We've been to Gleann several times but this is the most at home we've felt. Anna Marie is a wonderful and responsive host. We hope the house is available when we return sometime.

  • Beautiful, quiet and close to lots of fun things! It's perfect for getting away, but not too far away. The location is perfect for exploring County Donegal and the coast. Shaun was a great host, suggesting places to see and helping out with a wifi issue. It's a charming and idyllic place. The sheep are the nearest neighbors! It was cozy and the peat fire kept it warm at night. Will be back someday!

In a side valley from Glencolmcille (5 minutes drive, 30 minutes walk) you find our authentic Old School House Meenacross built in 1920. Best place to relax and enjoy the beautiful, wild landscape of Donegal.
Monica, a young Irish woman, who has the hospitality in her blood, is looking after the house and the guests! The final cleaning of € 80 .-- is not included in the price, but is paid directly to Monica. This price is valid for stays of 3 days. For shorter stays, we will match the price on the number of persons / days. Pure relaxation - without phone and internet - in a side valley of Glencolmcille, Donegal. Here is our "Old School House Meenacross" dating back to 1920, the house has downstairs a large kitchen and a living room with fireplace. The floors are the original wood floors from the former school. Upstairs thera are 3 double bedrooms and one bathroom with shower. Hiking, fishing, cooking, reading, sleeping ... given the spectacular, wild landscape of the Irish coast. There is no place in the world in which we can recover better from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The house is owned by 3 people who all live in Switzerland. It is in our possession for more than 20 years.
  • The eve school is faithful to the photos. It is a peaceful place, cozy in the depths of the Donegal. We enjoyed cooking with the "Stanley" and getting together with family. The surrounding activities are diverse and varied. We recommend accommodation to anyone wishing to take a break ...

  • Wonderful place to get away from it all but still only a short drive to Glen. The house is very special and has been converted well without losing any of its character. The kitchen is well equipped and the range worked well once we got the hang of it. Monica was happy to talk about any queries that we had - she was also delightful in person. There were plenty of leaflets in the house with ideas of things to do. We were all very sad to leave.

  • Rustic, with ample room for a get-away in Donegal. Very good access to some great locations (beaches, hills/mountains).

  • We stayed 2 nights in the Old School House. Exactly as described! Removed from everything, no tv, no mobile network, no wifi. Its really how life should be lived. Perched high up in a glen from Glencolumcille, with some amazing scenery and wildlife to match. A lot of character in this house and the children could really use their imagination to see themselves going to school here. Nice clean kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms etc. Just be careful with the open fire, the chimney doesn't take the smoke too well! Stayed here for the marathon and was blessed with good weather, wouldn't hesitate to come back next year.

  • The Old School House is an absolute gem and a wonderful get away. The open fire, the wonderful landscape and Monica's responsiveness if we needed help made it an exceptional stay.

  • Laetitia's house is a perfect place to have a real break! Even if the old school house is in an isolated place, we had, due to Laetitia, all information we needed. Thanks a lot!
