  • This place is truly a gem and I highly recommend it! Clean and modern with great amenities & WiFi. Comfy bed, beautiful views from every window and close to the airport, ferry and basically everything. It made our stay on Barra absolutely perfect. The host was quick to respond and very helpful with questions - THANK YOU!!!

  • Fantastic cosy space, with amazing modern and clean facilities. A wonderful space to be in when the weather closed in! Great communication from the host too

  • When you do one of these reviews you're asked to highlight the outstanding features of the property - cleanliness, stylish space, thoughtful touches etc. I had to tick all of the boxes because this AirB&B is exemplary! Fantastic location with a wonderful view out of every window, really (and I mean really) well equipped, cosy and comfortable. Better TV and Internet than we get at home if that's your thing. That's before we start on the wonders of Barra which are close by! Highly, highly recommended.

  • Perfect flat in beautiful Landscape. Thanks a lot for the time. It was very nice and the communication with Margarete very friendly and helpful.

44 Kentangaval is a simple, clean, old fashioned style, traditional croft house B and B with two rooms to let. These are listed as Hannah's Room (family room with double bed, single bed and guest bed.... Travel cot on request ) and Finlay's Room (double room, with facility to add a single bed or a travel cot ). In addition there is a small 'box room ' with a wooden cot. No TV in rooms, shared shower room, no locks on doors....security isn't an issue on the island! But it's quiet and you should sleep well on the new comfortable mattresses we have on the beds. The house is positioned ideally for Castlebay, being only two houses out of Castlebay and a very short walk from the Castlebay amenities and Co op shop. Set back from the road, it's in a quiet spot with a little river right outside the house and plenty of bird song in the mornings. The corncrake has been particularly active this year! The bedroom windows have lovely views of the shore across the road.
44 Kentangaval is only a very short stroll from the amenities of Castlebay. Breakfast will be a help yourself continental selection but bacon and rolls will be available for you to cook... DIY! I am out of the house early and breakfast will be left for you to help yourself at a time that suits you! The Castlebay Hotel and Craigard Hotel are ideal for evening meals, as is the Kisimul cafe which offers a variety of food including Indian dishes. The Isle of Barra Hotel is a fifteen minute walk in the opposite direction. Booking is always advisable as these places are very busy in the summer season.
Castlebay and Kentangaval are very quiet areas with a real island village feel. You will be stunned by the sunsets if you go out just before sunset for a short stroll behind the house. In Castlebay you can enjoy coffee or lunch on the deck at the Hebridean Toffee shop, the Buth.. our community shop, or Kisimul Cafe. The post office tearoom comes highly commended. In the evenings the hotels and Kisimul Cafe can be recommended for dinner, but booking ahead of your arrival is strongly advised. How about a two minute boat trip to Kisimul Castle in the bay, home of the Clan Macneil? The small boat leaves the pier regularly throughout the day. Tangusdale's sandy beach is just a fifteen min walk from the house, an easy stroll at any time of day. There is a circular walk there taking you out across the moor to an old Dun. Other walks are signposted throughout the island and on Vatersay . Everyone enjoys a trip to Barra airport to see the planes landing in the beach! The café there has a good reputation for food... Breakfast, lunch, coffee and cake! Several places will do a takeaway meal for you and you are welcome to bring that back and eat in the kitchen. Two local boats do regular trips to the Isle of Mingulay and occasionally trips to St Kilda are advertised.
  • This is a great place with lots of modern touches but plenty of traditional character. Wonderful hospitality from Liz who makes you feel really welcome.

  • We really enjoyed our stay at Liz‘ place. We felt right at home! The location was great to explore Barra, communication with Liz was easy, breakfast was great and the room was lovely. Liz is an amazing host, sharing a lot of tips with us und helping us when we got stuck on Barra because of the weather. We‘d definitely stay here again and can‘t recommend her enough!

    Helena2019-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed the stay at this place, Liz was very nice and helpful, she even gave us lift to the ferry in the morning (about 5 am!) and she gave me some plasters, when i hurt myself on bike. We felt there like at home, she had also a lovely cat :) the kitchen was available at any time and we could take fruits, yohgurts, bread, bacon for the breakfast. The location was great, next to the shop and not so far from the ferry. We really hope, that we can visit this place someday again!

    Iwona2019-09-05T00:00:00Z
  • Liz was an excellent host especially when she put us up for an additional night when the ferry to eriskay was cancelled. Her breakfasts were fantastic we enjoyed our cosy room. Thanks for everything Lorna and Jim

    Lorna2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely lovely place, comfortable bed, friendly host and great location. Couldn’t recommend it enough.

    Holly2019-08-30T00:00:00Z
  • Great location. Cosy house which is spotlessly clean. Great choice of breakfasts which you just make yourself mostly, although on Sunday, Liz made it for us, which was great, felt spoilt. Lovely relaxed atmosphere, nothing seems to be any bother. Recommend this house to anyone

    Hazel2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • When you arrive on Barra, you won’t have cell service or WiFi, it our experience was hoping we we walking the right way and having Liz come to meet us in her car. We threw our bags in and walked the rest of the 10 minutes from the ferry. When we arrived and told her we were only staying the night, she offered to drive us around the island herself. We got so much unique insight and so many quirky hilarious anecdotes we couldn’t have gotten any other way. Our stay in Barra wouldn’t have been the same without her!

    Krista2019-08-20T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect overnight stop on our Hebridean Way cycle ride. Liz is a lovely host and provides everything you need including storage for our bikes. Handily located less than one mile from Castlebay ferry terminal.

Our tiny house is nestled just behind the old walled garden of Cuithir house. Set in a pretty flower filled meadow with beautiful far reaching views over the hills of Barra. This truly is the perfect place to get away from it all. The house is super cosy and has everything you would need from a multi fuel Hobbit stove to hot water shower, a gas oven with two hobs, a very comfortable sofa bed and even a single bed mezzanine above the dining table.
Although the tiny house is away from it all, Castle bay is just a few miles away where you'll find great cafes and restaurants. Don't miss out on the post office' cream teas. An absolute must. A meal at Kisimul cafe also an absolute must.
  • Host are fantastic great communication and lovely little cabin. Spotlessly clean

    George2020-03-23T00:00:00Z
  • Very helpful. Guided us from the ferry, and gave us useful tips.

  • A charming little house with lots of character. Very cosy and perfect for one or two people. Thanks to the lovely lady who came down to visit me on arrival.

    Graham2019-10-15T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely little place to stay on Barra with a newly finished driveway right to the front door. Perfectly positioned between Castlebay and the airport too. Top tips from our hosts were very helpful. Thanks.

  • A lovely, very clever space! Remote, relaxing and very homely! Off arriving in dark be aware that the wee house is just off the main road and if you get to church you have gone too far.

  • Do not be put off by the fact this is a static caravan. It’s got more amenities and space than most houses plus is warm comfy and spotless. The host is super and was very thoughtful with her special touches and local knowledge.

  • Great location and excellent facilities. A short walk and you’re in Castlebay. Our first and certainly not our last visit to our beautiful Outer Herbides. ❤️

    Hazel2019-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful spot outside Castlebay to enjoy Barra and explore around the island. The space is very well organized and has everything you could need. I hope we can come back

    Jose2019-08-18T00:00:00Z
  • The caravan is situated close to Castlebay a short ten minute walk from the ferry terminal. It slept five of us very comfortably. The shops, pubs and hotels are a short walk away. The facilities inside the caravan were great! Netflix and Wi-fi were a very welcome added bonus! Loved that it was just off the road but nicely tucked away offering privacy... thank you Lorraine 😊

    Maureen2019-08-09T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely loved every minute of our stay. Location was perfect and couldn't fault a thing. Will definitely book again. xx

    Fiona2019-07-08T00:00:00Z
  • Lorraines place was fab, very comfy and all cosy, beautiful views. Loved my stay. Will be back for sure.

  • We had a great time in Barra, and really loved the caravan. From booking to check out, relaxed and seamless process. Superb location with sea view from front window with clear sight over the iconic Kisimul Castle in the bay. Spacious, airy caravan (immaculately clean) with everything we needed: comfy beds and plenty of towels, great phone signal (EE) and even WiFi. 5 mins brisk march from the pub along the main road. For what we paid and what we got, was excellent value for money. Likely will be back for similar event next year and will def be in touch to rebook if this is the case. Thanks again. Iain

  • Don't let the name fool you - this caravan is more like a home. Incredibly spacious and fitted with all the comforts you'll need, it has spectacular views of the coastline. Maria went above and beyond to ensure our holiday went smoothly - highly recommend!!!

    Michelle2019-09-07T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent communications - directions and photo really helpful - found the caravan easily (even though it was twilight by the time we arrived - Maria was very flexible about arrival time). Caravan was warm and cosy - for which we were grateful, as it was a damp evening. Elevated position, offering lovely views of the coast. The caravan is well-equipped and the beds comfortable. Very brief stay, as we (4 of us) headed off early the following morning to catch the ferry to Eriskay - cycling the length of the Outer Hebrides. The caravan was perfect for our needs.

    Paul2019-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • Actually, I did not reach the house - the ferry was cancelled) So I can only highlight that Maria was very responsive and addressed all my letters very briefly. Hope, others visitors have more luck with the weather.

    Roman2019-08-17T00:00:00Z
  • Caravan was ideal for short stay on island. Easy to find following directions provided. Lovely and clean, all you need for home from home with bonus of amazing views. Would definately recommend.

  • A lovely spot and very well equipped. Thank you!

    Paul2019-08-03T00:00:00Z
  • We found the caravan easily because of the good instructions. The caravan was very clean and cosy. The coast just below the caravan is picturesque at sunset.

    Karin2019-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • This mobile home is clean and comfortable and well equipped for cooking. Lovely views and there is a small deck at the front. Marias parents were pleasant and helpful. We would stay there in the future .

  • Very well appointed property. I was staying overnight with a colleague for a work trip, but wish I could have stayed longer. Everything you need is available at the property, including a fully equipped kitchen. However, the real wow factor lies out the front room window, what a view. Who needs a tv, just sit back on the settee and soak in the view, stunning.

    Neil2019-09-14T00:00:00Z

Our Bungalow is on the east side of Barra 3 miles from Castlebay. It sits at the top of a Brae so commands beautiful views of the Sea of the Hebrides with Skye Eigg and Muck to be seen also the ferry coming and going to the mainland . It’s fenced off so peace of mind for dogs or children .Its very private . We have everything in it to make it a fantastic home for holidays with Internet included . What more could you want 😊 Saturday to Saturday is preferred but we can sometimes be more flexible 👍
We are three miles from Castlebay. Earsary is beautiful and theirs a tidal beach at the bottom of the road .
  • Just returned from a great week at Catherine's place. The property is located on the east side of the island so you benefit from seeing the sun rise. The view from the property is breathtaking and we would sit for hours looking out to sea. The cottage has everything you could wish. A real cosy home from home. Definitely recommended.

    Kevin2019-08-17T00:00:00Z
  • The house is fantastic. It has everything you need for a great stay in Barra. It’s very comfortable, clean and has the most incredible views across the sea. Catherine is also a great host and went out her way to ensure we had a lovely stay, letting us know when the ferry had been cancelled and suggesting things to do on the island.

    Christopher2019-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely cottage in a beautiful spot - had everything we needed for a relaxing break.

    Philippa2019-07-06T00:00:00Z
  • What a find! The house is clean, comfortable, well equipped and we arrived to fresh flowers too. The views out over the sea are to die for and we loved using the binoculars to keep our eye on the boats passing by! Barra is a wonderful island and this house is a brilliant place to stay to enjoy a holiday there. Catherine was helpful and all communications was quick and efficient.

    Debra2019-06-22T00:00:00Z
  • We loved the house, it was spotlessly clean and had everything you could need. The views are spectacular and being fenced in was fantastic for our dog. A super comfortable home from home, highly recommend!

  • This is a wonderful place to stay on the beautiful island of Barra. We had a great time - the kids particularly loved the lambs outside. The kitchen was well equipped with everything we needed and it was cosy when the weather was a bit wild outside. I would definitely recommend.

    Iain2019-06-01T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great week here rather steep drive up to house but the views from the house are great. Everything you need for your stay is there and Barra is a stunning island. Would not hesitate to go back.

  • Delightful place just on the outskirts of Castlebay. A tiny river runs through the property creating an idyllic atmosphere. The room itself is very comfy—from the towels to the bedding to the decor. If you’re looking for a wonderful place to stay in Castlebay, I can’t recommend this place enough!

  • Liz’s place is great. It’s easy to access. We walked from the ferry. It’s clean, attractive and comfortable. Lots to choose from for breakfast. The best part is Liz, who is sweet, kind, knowledgeable and helpful. She was particularly helpful and generous to us when we had a small bicycle accident. Thanks again Liz! We are going back to Barra to catch the ferry and we will stay with Liz again.

    Cynthia2019-09-13T00:00:00Z

  • We had a lovely stay with Liz. It felt like we were staying with family. The room was comfortable and clean. Liz was happy to give us helpful tips on what to do in Barra and we enjoyed chatting with her in the evenings. Liz even drove us to the ferry very early in the morning for our departure and sent us off with snacks for our journey.

  • I had the most wonderful time in this spacious and comfortable caravan! Absolutely nothing was missing and every deatail - kitchen, shower, heating, wifi, tv, it all! - was functioning like I wish it did in my own home. Catherine and Iain were the most warmhearted and considerate hosts! They were not only helpful and reliable, they also made me feel truly welcome and without their perfect knowledge of the island I would have missed out on a number of things! They definitely made my stay on barra even more memorable and lovely than it already was. I will certainly come back!

  • Good location with nice views! Very clean and friendly hosts. Perfect for us! Enough space for two adults and two kids. We really liked the trailer. Really clean and Catherine and Iban are lovley.

  • We have just had the most memorable and magical trip to the Island of Barra. What an incredible place. Scotland at its finest. The caravan was extremely spacious, comfortable and clean and was situated in a beautiful and quiet area but also within very close walking distance of the main town and ferry terminal. Catherine and he husband were so kind and lovely and helped to make our trip so special. Thank you so much. We highly recommend!

  • Catherine and Iain are the consummate hosts. They go the extra mile in making you welcome and nothing is too much bother for them. Had an amazing time on Barra and Catherine and Iain were a big part of that.

    David2019-09-19T00:00:00Z
  • Catherine was fantastic, we arrived very late as we had to work and Catherine could not have been more helpful. Would definitely return

    Ian2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • Catherine communicated well and greeted us on arrival. The property was very clean with all the amenities you would expect. We would definitely stay again.

    Amy2019-09-06T00:00:00Z
  • The caravan is sitting higher up from main street and back from the bustle. its view is just lovely and always quiet. There was one bird watcher passed in 4 days. The actual van was lovely , sparkling clean and warm with everything you would need. There was also a separate drying shed for our bikes and a washing maching and dryer. There is a coop on the island for all the day to day stuff. But great foodie places. everywhere we ate was terrific. Castlebay hotel - great steak pie. Kizimul café - don't miss this - right beside the post office at the bay. The curries are fab. The post office will give you wifi and the best scones/cream jam ever and hot chocolate. its a beautiful island - even in the rain and we will be back. Catherine our host could not have been more helpful and accommodating

    Jacqui2019-09-03T00:00:00Z
  • Super location for exploring the island. The caravan was clean, had everything we needed and was very comfortable. We seen white tailed sea eagles from the living room window and lots of other wild animals. Catherine was lovely and welcoming. Definitely worth a trip

If you are looking for a simple seaside cottage with rustic charm, this may be the place for you. Located just 30m from the sea this two bedroom cottage offers spectacular views across North Bay, home to local wildlife such as otters, seals and the occasional sea eagle. Enjoy a roaring fire while the wind howls round the chimneys. Explore the vast white beaches and the rugged shoreline of this magical island in winter. See the Milky Way for the first time. Adventure is waiting for you.
The cottage is the perfect island hideaway offering accommodation for up to five people and provides the complete antithesis to a busy, stressful, inner city life style. It has retained its nautical charm and offers uninterrupted views over North Bay. Located on a cul-de-sac close to the shore, the only noise you'll be likely to hear are the distant engines of the fishing boats leaving the bay or returning with their catch, the howls of the seals or the cries of the odd sea gull. Sitting on a sheep skin on the Victorian sofa by the roaring fire can be as magical as catching the morning sun sparkle across the bay from the blue bench. But regardless of the time of year, you'd need to pack your warmest fleece, gloves, hats, socks, we're in the Outer Hebrides after all. During the summer months the cottage is a great place for beach combers, nature lovers and families. Between October and March the cottage is suitable for hardy adventurers only. The cottage offers fast broadband and there is EE reception. There is small stereo/ radio player with an eclectic selection of CDs and there are lots of games, books and jigsaws. The cottage is heated by three oil-filled mobile radiators in addition to the open fire for which we provide plenty of coal. All beds have four season duvets and electric blankets to ensure a cosy night's sleep. You'll find a well-equipped kitchen with a washing machine, dishwasher, cooker, a small fridge and a micro-wave. What my friends and I love most about the cottage is the breathtaking ever changing light across the bay and the beautiful sunsets over the western hills. The cottage is non-smoking and we have a strict no pets policy. Please be aware that there is no tv. Fibreoptic broadband allows streaming.
The hamlet of Bruernish in which Rubha Charnain is located only has a few houses scattered along two roads both of which are quiet cul-de-sacs. It's a great place for children to explore rock pools, small harbours and re-shuffle the local crab population. Adults may prefer a stroll to the Heathbank Hotel which is just under one mile from the cottage and offers fresh seafood and excellent drinks.
  • We spent almost a week in Rubha Chàrnain, on a winter journey. Barra is a wild and preserved little island with fantastic landscapes everywhere, the cottage's surroundings included. Very cosy, well equiped and authentic, Rubha Chàrnain had everything we needed and more. We really appreciated sitting with a fire on a stormy day. Cold was not a problem with all the radiators provided. There is a lot to do, even in winter season, if you like walks and nature. And what could i say about Anke's kindness.. she is one of these rare hosts truely concerned about her guests, involved in their journey and comfort. Without all her tips, her amazing communication and understanding, our trip wouldn't have been the same.

    Charlotte2020-01-14T00:00:00Z
  • We definitely enjoyed our stay on Barra and at Anke’s house ! It was exactly what we were looking for, a cozy, wild, and out of nowhere place to disconnect and rest. We appreciated the strong character of the island during winter, as much as the place itself, a charming cottage in front of the sea, where you see Scottish blackface sheep around, and from where it’s easy to discover the island and also visit the others islands. Very reactive and well disposed communication. A place to recommend, even in the middle of winter !

    François2020-01-08T00:00:00Z
  • Anke is great to communicate with and the property is in an lovely position.

    Bruce2019-12-12T00:00:00Z
  • This is a lovely cottage in an amazing location. We loved the cosy fire and the fact that we were right on the coast with great views all around. The cottage is well equipped and even though it doesn't have central heating we managed fine with the open fire and the heaters provided. Highly recommended!

    Malcolm2019-12-02T00:00:00Z
  • Nice little house by the sea. Anke is very responsive to help us. I highly recommend. We had a great week in his cottage. Thank you again for all. Arnaud

  • My expectations were set with all the information I was given at the time of booking and prior to arrival and they were absolutely met when I arrived (and more!). While not luxurious it was a really comfortable, homely, authentic and characterful place. I had a great time!

  • Amazing location by the sea. Rustic and authentic feel.

The perfect setting for a rural, island, rustic holiday, with breathtaking views. It's nestled in between 2 glorious white sand beaches. Whether it be a romantic trip to woo your other half, or an adventure holiday with friends, look no further.
The caravan is spacious and comfortable, sleeping a maximum of 4 people. It is situated next to our house, just outside the village of Vatersay with ample open space and lovely unspoilt views stretching out across the lushous, green meadows which can be enjoyed from the comfort of your own private decking. On a still summers night you can enjoy the beautiful sunset over the West Beach whilst hearing the gentle crashing of the waves in the distance. Why not grab yourself a glass of wine and let time slowly drift by.
The caravan is perfectly situated between two beautiful beaches. The west beach is often popular with surfers, whereas The Bay has a more peaceful and tranquil feel. The caravan is a stone's throw away from the community hall, which is open during the summer as a cafe. You might be lucky and catch the famous Vatersay Boys in the hall for a summer ceilidh! It is a 15 minute bus/car journey away from the main town of Castlebay, home to a choice of pubs/restaurants/cafes/shops.
  • This accommodation is exceptional and I chose that word carefully. In terms of comfort, situation and value for money, you will not do better no matter where you look. It enhanced our experience of Barra and made our holiday.

    Julia2019-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • The caravan is in a great location for both beaches. It has everything you need. We had a great weekend in Vatersay & Barra. We enjoyed our scones, mòran taing!

The location was stunning. With a number of walks from the doorstep and three beatiful beaches to choose from. One of the beaches was less than 5 minutes from the caravan. Mary is a lovely host.

Sea Gem Cottage is a traditional Croft house on the edge of Castlebay. The decor has a seaside holiday theme suiting the location! It is set back off the road and has a tranquility which is great for a relaxing holiday. There is a large garden laid to grass, ideal for barbecues, kids to kick a football and everyone just to enjoy sitting out when the weather is fine. The shore is just across the road, Tangusdale sandy beach is a fifteen minute walk and many enjoy the longer walk to Vatersay
Built in a traditional style, the house has three large bedrooms and a small box room which is set up with a wooden cot suitable for a small child. The rooms are named..... Hannah’s Room is the family room with a double bed and a single bed with pull out guest bed below. Finlay’s Room is a spacious double bedroom. Lizzie’s Room is a downstairs bedroom with kingsize bed. The box room has a wooden cot, but there is also a travel cot available, high chair and stair gate. Downstairs is the lounge, eating kitchen with room for eight to sit round the table, 2 shower rooms and the utility room.
Castlebay is the main village on the island and where the ferry from Oban arrives. There are many attractions on the island, including a visit to the airport where the planes arriving from Glasgow famously land on the beach at low tides. The island has countless sandy beaches and rocky shorelines to explore, sign posted walks and not forgetting a climb to the highest point, Heaval. In the summer, boat trips can be arranged to some of the nearby islands and sea life spotting excursions are popular. A local bike hire company can supply you with transport for a day or longer, including electric bikes, handy for the hilly parts! The island is about to start distilling Barra gin , there is a great music culture on the island and all the local bars will have music going at some point. In the summer, a weekly family ceilidh is held in Vatersay hall with a bus available to and from it. In Castlebay we have a water sports business and they will be delighted to teach you to canoe, kayak or wind surf! Their prices are reasonable and you could become quite proficient in a week!
  • Sea Gem is a fantastic family home - very comfortable; immaculate throughout and in a great location. Liz is a very helpful host. I would recommend this property.

  • Anne Marie's house is a gem. Its location is ideal for all the attractions in Castlebay and it was spotless throughout. The kitchen is extremely well-stocked, not just with appliances, but with everything you would expect to find in your own home. The lounge has two large, comfy sofas, which are perfect to relax on after a full day's adventure. The bedrooms are very large with extremely comfortable beds, so no trouble going to sleep! All-in-all, it's a perfect place to stay in Castlebay and I would have no hesitation in a) recommending it to all my friends and b) coming back again for another stay.

  • Barra is a lovely island, very much the outer Hebrides in miniature, stunning coastline, lovely beaches, trees (yes really!) an airport on a beach, what more could you want? Granted glittering nightlife, theatres and restaurants are a bit thin on the ground, but if you’re looking somewhere quiet to get away from it all you won’t find better. That said, cafe kisimul in Castlebay is excellent, and they do takeaway too, which is well worth considering. Best beaches are down in Vatersay, and seeing the plane come into the airport is bucket list stuff. The house itself is lovely, really clean modern and well equipped with everything you need. It’s finished to a really high standard, and is really comfortable too. We pretty much lived in the kitchen while we were there, and it has everything you need to cook whatever you want from a pizza to a roast dinner. All are communications with the host were excellent. Overall, can’t find a negative thing to say, proper 10 out of 10 stuff!

  • Tigh Zed is a fabulous, well appointed quirky house. Even better in real life, tucked in the machair surrounded by wildflowers, corncrakes and beautiful views. The house is cosy, welcoming and homely.

  • Barra is a beautiful corner of Scotland and this was the perfect base for our family’s adventures. Lots of space, facilities to cook for ourselves and lots of books and pamphlets for exploring the islands.
