Places to stay in Jackson Bay

Places to stay in Jackson Bay
Haast cottage is set on a private section with sea views - beach access is an easy 5 minutes walk away. A perfect base to get away from the hustle of city life and enjoy why UNESCO included this area in it's Te Wahipounamu World Heritage listing. There are numerous short and longer day walks nearby as well as scenic flights, jetboating and guided hunting and fishing excursions. Excellent dining options are available at Jackson Bay and Haast (20 minutes in either direction).
Built in 2018 as extra family accommodation, the cottage is fully self contained including a washing machine. It is well insulated and captures both morning and afernoon sun. There is an oil heater should it be needed for extra warmth. The adjoining verandah is a great place to sit, relax and enjoy an early morning cuppa or an evening drink watching the sun set over the ocean. Long walks on the beach where the only visitor may be you -are a must.
Hannahs Clearing was originally home to workers at the Carter Holt Harvey timber mill. The timber mill closed down in the early 1970's and the village now accommodates a community of fisherman, whitebaiters and those involved with venison recovery. A quiet way of life, residents are more like extended family members.
  • Whst a great base to explore such a stunning area. The hut is perfect for 2 people. Comfy bed, great shower. Everything you need to get away from the pressures of civilisation!

    Kathy2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • Self contained house, completely off the grid. Would stop again if in the area, book full of local tips inside! Quite far away from shops/places to eat/amenities. Would stop again if in the area.

  • Expect exactly how Rachel describes her cottage. We loved it. Cozy but spartan. After a day exploring the coastal wonders of Haast-Jackson, the cottage was a wonderful place to come home to.

    John2020-03-04T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect for our quick one night trip! Small but had everything we needed. Thanks Rachel

    Prue2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • Great little unit, very new! Had everything we needed. It's such a quiet and secluded spot, and beach is beautiful. We were lucky and had some incredible sunsets too.

    Daniel2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • This beautifully presented cabin was perfect for our trip south of Haast. It was warm and quite, with an excellent range of amenities. The beach was nearby and the sunset view was great.

    Kelly2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • Rachel's place is great, felt like brand new construction and very clean, 1/2 way between Haast and Jackson Bay - the latter has lovely walks and the Best fish and chips at the Cray Pot-, with across the street access to an outstanding stretch of beach. We took a Waitota river jet boat trip where Ruth our guide provided a thoughtful and informative overview of the region and area as a world heritage site. NOTE, no internet or cell access. Disconnect for a few days.

    Kate2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • Located in a quiet spot a short walk to the beach (empty when we went to it). As Rachel advises do stock up on food and petrol before arriving to Hannah's clearing as nothing around apart from other houses. Everything looked new and clean. Comfortable beds and clean towels. Nice toiletries. Would stay again

    Hannahs Clearing, Haast, New Zealand

Haast is situated in the heart of Te Wāhipounamu World Heritage Area. There are national parks to the north, south and east and the Tasman sea to the West. From Haast township to Jackson Bay there are spectacular beaches, dunes, lakes and wetlands. The area is perfect for fishing, hunting and tramping and there are many walks to explore. Other activities include Jet Boat tours and helicopter flights. Just hanging out is always worth considering!
The lodge is well set-up for couples - and there is a mezzanine floor above the main room with mattresses for additional guests and children. These is a small library of locally relevant books.
for excellent ideas and advice check out: https://www.tripadvisor.co.nz/Attractions-g1988990-Activities-Haast_West_Coast_Region_South_Island.html
  • This house is a great base for exploring the Haast area. The solar and wind power provided all the power we needed and all the facilities were very good. Bruce took extra trouble to provide info related to our interests. Excellent value.

    David2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic house in a great quiet town a stone's throw from of the most amazing bush and rivers in New Zealand. Highly recommended

    Rafe2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • Bruce cottage is very cosy and comfortable!! We always would stay again there!

    Christine2020-02-08T00:00:00Z
  • Bruce’s place was comfortable spacious and relaxing. We did not know what to expect with an “ off the grid” cabin, but everything worked well.

    Steven2020-01-29T00:00:00Z
  • Couldn’t actually stay due to weather conditions and road closures but owners were very very accommodating and kind in how they dealt with us and so for that reason I would highly recommend.

    Joanne2019-12-03T00:00:00Z
  • Thank you very much, we had a wonderful family holiday. The house was great.

    Sarah2019-10-02T00:00:00Z
  • This sustainable off grid house is warm, cosy yet spacious with all amenities required and is in such an awe-inspiring location with 360º breath taking views, majestic mountains, wild seas, rugged coastline, wildlife and rainforest, so much to see and do!!! Great hospitality, great hosts!!!

    Anna2019-07-21T00:00:00Z
  • Great hosts! They gave us all important information on how to run the house. I like the idea that the owners decided to use the eco friendly source of power (solar panels). There is plenty of power if you are mindful. Great example of being sustainable on your holidays. And only 2hrs away from Fox Glacier.

  • We recommend to stay here !

    Gianni2020-03-17T00:00:00Z
  • We had a very comfortable stay at Robyn’s quiet apartment. The bed is comfortable and the shower nice and hot. AC is available if you need it. Great place to stay on your way to or from the West Coast.

    Stephen2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • After having always just passed through Haast on our way north or south, we decided to take it slowly this time. Robyn's place is fantastic - large, has all essentials for making your own breakfast and cell coverage is fine. There are lots of things to explore around Haast just to the north and towards Jacksons Bay that stopping makes a lot of sense. If you are after some raw nature without the tourists, this is the place to go. We had a great time and wonderful stay.

    Jens2020-03-14T00:00:00Z
  • Robyns place was exactly as featured. Lovely, small town vibe. We enjoyed takeaway fish and chips from the grocery store across the street. Delicious!!

  • This is one of the nicest Airbnb’s we’ve stayed in over the years. Beautifully decorated, very comfortable, everything needed in the kitchen, amazing location right on expansive empty beach. Surrounding area is stellar and remote. Don’t miss this one!

    Julie2020-03-21T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful space and location. It is literally steps from the beach and a perfect place to unwind. Definitely recommend to everyone visiting the west coast. :)

    Linnea2020-03-17T00:00:00Z

This basic rustic cottage is nestled on a bushy section between Aspiring National Park and land owned by the Makarora Wonderland Lodge. The bird life is incredible with Kaka, Tui and Kereru frequently landing in the trees around us. It is a spacious, self contained, 2 bedroom abode with lounge. There is a collection of DVD's, stereo system and board games. Fully equipped kitchen. Outside is your own garden entertaining area with table and chairs, BBQ, and views up to Mt Shrimpton.
The cottage is country style; heated only by a fireplace (not heat pump) and we don't have TV but love movie watching on wet days so there is a TV with a good DVD collection and board games/books :) We are doing a lot of work to bring the property up to standard, but for now it is rustic and affordable!
Our neighbourhood is rural and dominated by forest! We are 45 minutes from Wanaka and an hour from Haast. The Blue Pools are 7 minutes drive away. The cottage is immediately adjacent to the Makarora Wonderland Lodge which has a great cafe and bar, Wifi service and access to helicopter and fixed wing flights around the area and the Wilkin Jetboat to access the beautiful Wilkin-Young hiking circuit and other longer tramps.
  • Really cosy home in amazing scenery next a lovely cafe. Many thanks, Rob and Sati.

    Rob2020-03-23T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful and clean! Location is remote and very cute, no reception but board games were provided so we had a good night of family bonding

    Bryce2020-03-14T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely birdsong, nice bush walk and very special place to sleep

    Eveline2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • Secluded location, which was easy to find following the directions. Quirky accommodation with lots of character and amazing native bird life.

    Anita2020-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • The birdsong cottage is a really special place. It is a beautiful stone cottage and you really do hear many birds singing around you. There is limited WiFi available which can be received from the outside of the cottage and at a cafe down the street in case you need it. I recommend listening to the birds instead :)

    Makarora, Otago, New Zealand

Cosy and comfortable, this northfacing cabin is situated in the peaceful village of Makarora East, at the head of Lake Wanaka. Recently refurbished, this standalone self-contained sleep-out is on the owner's property, but is still very private and on a quiet residential street, a block away from State Highway 6.
The cabin has a small kitchenette with microwave, kettle and toaster but no other cooking facilities. A continental breakfast of muesli, fruit and yoghurt is provided. Along with tea and coffee. Located on the Haast Pass Highway between Wanaka and the West Coast, Makarora is an access point to the Mt Aspiring National Park. It is a perfect place to spend time and explore, either by foot, helicopter, plane, or jet boat. Makarora comes complete with spectacular mountain scenery, alpine vegetation and river valleys of silver beech. The many and varied walks available from Makarora include the famed Siberia Experience and Gillespie Pass Circuit. Along with sights like the Blue Pools, numerous other adventures and the many short and day walks, Makarora is the perfect stopover between Queenstown and the West Coast or a great alternative to the busyness and cost of Wanaka and Queenstown. Wanaka is approx. 1 hour away and the drive is awe-inspiring. Haast is approx. 1.25 hours drive. A small shop and the local pub, where you can get meals, is just 10 minutes drive away.
My neighbourhhood is primarily a small, quiet community of both holiday homes and permanent residents. I'm lucky to be sandwiched between holiday homes so my neighbours are either absent or quiet living folk.
  • Such a cute Airbnb in a gorgeous setting with great amenities!

  • Staying at Rachel's was great! The cabin is lovely, very clean and has an awesome view to all directions. The bathroom is very modern, the bed very comfy. Rachel is a great host, very welcoming and so supportive!! We would definitively come again (and stay longer).

  • A perfect stop for a night between Wanaka and Haast Pass. Rachel provided detailed instructions for how to find her place, was happy to chat and provide suggestions for some walks off the beaten path but otherwise allowed us to have our privacy. The cabin was cozy, stylish and had everything we needed.

Enjoy the open spaces, the rural aspects and a charming and comfortable, yet spacious well appointed self catered studio. Bridget and her 3 labradors welcome you. Surrounded by farmland it's a 2 minute walk to the Makarora River. Wake to a mountain view and the early morning sun. You have your own private entrance and outdoor seating area. The ‘hawkshead’ culture is a very relaxed one. Halfway between the sounds and glaciers. Self catering & simple cooking facilities. Complimentary WIFI
Hawkshead is Private, Quiet, Spacious, Open and Warm. Indoor and Outdoor Flow. At the head of Lake Wanaka makes perfect for an overnight stay. There is so much on offer in this valley from hiking, jet boating to scenic flights or simply just to relax , listen to the birds, read book under the shady trees. Travelling takes a lot of energy, so why not take a break and spoil yourself and recharge.
There is just no body about , we are a community of 70 people. Perfect opportunity to escape to nature. Travelling around , you will need insect replellant for the bushy area and the west coast especially.
  • There is no other place quite like Hawkshead, Makarora, it sings. We were blessed to have been able to stay there longer than originally intended. Bridget is truly a Super Hostess in every classic meaning of the words, a bright, caring, thoughtful soul who is quite simply a joy to be around. Her Labradors are just the same as she is, a joy. When we needed a couple of extra days to sort things out due to the current Corvid 19 pandemic, she made it a very easy, trouble free thing to do. Thank you Bridget, again, from the depths of our hearts.

Welcome to The Cookhouse @ Hannah's Clearing and our traditionally renovated house sympathetic to it's era and the native beauty surrounding it. Situated in Hannahs Clearing , a 15-20 minute drive South of the Haast Township, our Historic Holiday Home, (previously the “Cookhouse” for workers at the Old Carters Mill), sits amidst the rugged beauty of the South Island’s Wild West Coast. Bordered by Rainforest and the Tasman Sea, it truly is a fabulous getaway for couples, families and friends.
Completely renovated with a great kitchen and gourmet oven, dishwasher, microwave, open plan dining and living, Sky TV, a great indoor fire for those wet and wild West Coast days, four well appointed bedrooms accommodating eight (2 bedrooms with King Beds changeable to 2 x Singles, 1 bedroom with 3 singles, 1 bedroom with 1 single), one luxury bathroom with bath, shower and toilet, a separate bathroom with shower and toilet - you will find yourself in a very relaxing, cosy and comfortable environment. Nestled in a private subdivision with access to the Beach (70 metres away), there is a great deck with a barbecue and a fire pit to burn beach wood and toast marshmallows. The usually deserted Hannah's Beach (apart from driftwood) is a spectacle in itself with the sea one day being very calm and the next a torrent of raging waves (swimming not advised)! Whichever way you drive to get to The Cookhouse, down the West Coast or over the Haast Pass from Wanaka, you will enjoy spectacular mountain, bush, sea and river views, including many walks and sightseeing adventures. So come and stay at our lovely retreat and be surrounded by some of New Zealand’s most spectacular scenery!
Our beach (Hannah's Beach) is spectacular whether in a storm or a calm day. Mussel Point is located up the beach to the North of The Cookhouse - either walk 45mins along the beach or drive 5 mins up the road!

It is the perfect location to break the journey between the Glaciers & Queenstown. The Makarora, Wilkin & Young rivers are within easy access for tramping, hunting and fishing. While the valley is only approx 10 km long there are many opportunities for guests to enjoy the outdoor pursuits on offer.

  • Kenna met us on our arrival to her place. She has created a lovely private space separate to her house for guests with a beautiful view to the surrounding mountains. We had a very restful night.

    Robin2019-04-16T00:00:00Z
  • Kenna’s was the perfect stopover for us between the glaciers and Queenstown. Since our glacier tour went a bit later than expected, we arrived at the house after hours, but Kenna left us a lovely note and there was no problem with our late arrival. Breakfast basics were provided in the room (bread, butter, milk, etc.), which made for an easy morning so we could get going and continue sightseeing at the nearby Blue Pools. Couldn’t have asked for a better stay. Would definitely recommend.

Our charming cottage sits at the end of the driveway looking into the incredible Wilkin valley. This is a truly special private sanctuary in the wilderness for one to two people. From this fully self contained space you can explore the Mt Aspiring National park, Blue Pools, Isthmus Peak, Haast, Wanaka and Hawea. Explore or settle in by the fire on the most comfortable couch and enjoy the view, the serenity and beauty of this place. The Cottage is an adults only space.
  • Absolutely incredible place to relax and take some time out. Highly recommend more than one night to get the real feel for the place and enjoy more than one stunning sunset at Wild Earth! The cottage is modern yet rustic and stylish, great cooking facilities, bedroom and bathroom, a lovely fire and outdoor bath where you can spend time looking at the view. Breathtaking stars at night! By far the most comfortable, chilled and stunning Air BNB I’ve ever stayed in, definitely did not want to leave!! Pete was a great host and very accommodating, chatty, friendly and helpful. I’ll be back!!

    Claire2020-03-23T00:00:00Z
  • The hospitality and homely touches were wonderful! A very relaxing and peaceful place to stay!

    Riaan2020-03-21T00:00:00Z
  • This is one of the best farm stays we've experienced. A very stylish house with fantastic views, fireplace and even an outdoor bathtub to enjoy the scenery. A great place to stay over on the way to/from the west coast. Highly recommended!

    Peter2020-03-19T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage at Wild Earth is one of the best AirBnBs we have stayed at. It is beautifully designed, constructed and furnished. The bed is large and comfortable (firm but with a soft top), as is the couch. It was cold outside however the fire kept us warm. Pete and Janine were perfect hosts - very welcoming, friendly and caring. Breakfast ingredients were left in the fridge for us along with fresh fruit, and there is a good supply of herbs and spices for cooking. Janine even baked us some bread and brought it over to us - hot out of the oven. We enjoyed playing with Cash the dog, and one day we took him for a walk through the paddocks in front of the cottage. We had good coffee at the cafe at Wonderland. A great place to chill out and enjoy the view over the farm and up to the mountains. Highly recommended.

    Nicholas2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • Well worth stopping in and staying in this beautifully presented, well thought out cottage. And the view down the valley is absolutely amazing.

  • Wild Earth Cottage was a treat. Lovely stylish, comfortable accommodation with the most stunning outlook. Every need thought of. Highly recommend. We loved it.

    Gillian2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • It’s the best Airbnb you’ll ever stay at for the view alone - but Pete’s place is so much more than that. It’s stylish, functional and the outdoor bathtub is the thing you never knew you needed in your life. Perfect spot for star gazing and for exploring the surrounding areas. I could easily have stayed there for a week, one night is definitely not enough!!!

    Karolina2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Amazingly beautiful place with such friendly and welcoming hosts. Stylish house with so many thoughtful touches such as yoga mats, fresh flowers, organic eggs, granola, fruit and lots of herbs and spices - not to mention a delicious banana bread mix. Views to die for especially from the outside bath/ shower. Make sure you stay for more than one night!

The School House has been in the valley since 1945. On the Makarora river with an alpine cabin feel, north facing and a 2 min walk across the paddocks to the river. A 40 min drive from Wanaka and 1 hr drive from Haast on the West Coast. Self catering and sleeps 2-4 adults/children in 2 open plan bedrooms. Lovely big garden, pet sheep and the school bus 'billy' . The Schoolhouse is one of the oldest properties in the valley and true rural living in the mountains. My family often visit thier home.
Self catering. A full kitchen , dining/lounge, an alcove queen bedroom, 1 open plan double bedroom & shower room and seperate toilet .The views northfacing/west from the kitchen/living/bedroom are panoramic. The schoolhouse integrity still remains even through renovations have taken place for more comfort and practicality. 2 night minimum stay is encouraged for you to really enjoy yourselves in our beautiful valley. The property has been treated for pest control which is really a necessity in this rural environment.
The Makarora valley is 10 km long and a permenant residency of 70 people. Valley farms deer , cattle and sheep. Very mountainous on both sides of the road . Wilkin , Teal , Young valley's and 2020m Mount Shrimpton. The river is very close you can sometimes hear it . Hiking, jetboating , fishing and scenic flights all accessible from here. There is no supermarket.
  • This place is like no other!! If you like a spacious house, clean and light, cozy atmosphere and incredible view, GO! Total privacy, surrounded by beautiful mountains and adorable sheep. Wish we could have stayed longer. Thanks Bridget!

  • Loved our stay at Bridget's charming, cosy school house. Amazing vistas!

    Laura2020-02-03T00:00:00Z
  • A truly amazing place in a beautiful valley. Bring everything you need with you, because the location is quite remote, but the house is well equipped with all of the dishes or utensils you might need. Great views and perfect base for incredible hikes in a cozy house.

    Myron2020-02-01T00:00:00Z
  • The Schoolhouse is a charming and characterful place to stay, situated in the heart of the Makarora valley and surrounded by beautiful gardens just a stones throw from the Makarora river. As well as being a great jump off point to explore the local area it was also a pleasure to sit in the comfortable living room of an evening watching the ever- changing sky through the big windows. Although we didn’t meet Bridget in person on this occasion we knew she was close at hand if needed and she was always super quick and helpful with communication. A lovely stay. Thanks Bridget!

  • A beautiful and modern space. The scenery was raw and the feeling secluded. the house gave a cosy feel that made a glass of red all that more special.

    Emily2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • What a wonderful spot, so close to the beach but still sheltered by a bank of bushes. We loved the openness of the space and the comfort of the leather sofas! Everything we needed was provided which really helps when you are not that close to amenities! We met a Fjordland penguin at the delightful Cray Pot in Jackson Bay and loved watching immense waves crash on to the beach during a big storm! Highly recommended.

  • Warrick is the perfect host. Whenever we had a question he answered within minutes and helped us wherever we needed help. When in new zealand, we won‘t stay anywhere else then in his lovely house at the beach!

    Helen2020-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • Kenna and Rick's place is located in a beautiful peaceful area. It was the perfect place for us to stop on our long drive to the West Coast. Kenna was very welcoming. Thank you!!!

  • Great little unit with view of mountains and close to Blue Pools. Great staging soot for our long motorcycle ride over Haast Pass and all the way up the coast to Hokitika!

    Robert2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • This is a quiet (off the main road), clean studio with a comfortable bed and enough kitchen items to prepare simple foods and snacks.  There is on-site parking, then a short walk to the studio, and the porch area provides a nice spot to sit and enjoy the mountains, plants, and birds/wildlife.  The wifi was barely functional inside for us, but worked well on the porch (so enjoy the chairs/table and a nice view while online, data is limited to 1GB or pay extra). The AirBNB descriptions and photos are accurate. We enjoyed our stay and would return again.

Enjoy private access to the beach, plus the stunning scenery of Te Wahiponamu, NZ's largest protected wilderness area. A open and modern flowing studio with ocean views from bed room, lounge kitchen and bath room, the sound of the ocean to lull you to sleep, a large deck to enjoy the ocean views, bird life and the unbeatable southern stars on a clear night.
Hannahs Clearing & Haast is a small township rich in local culture. We are the third large house down the driveway. Jacksons Bay is an amazing 15 minute drive to the south. The area is full of beauty with long sandy beaches, lush forest, snowcapped peaks and numerous flowing rivers.
  • Awesome place, easy access to the beach, very remote area, the lace itself is nice and has a nice personal touch. Just make sure you screenshot the directions given you before hand as you will have no coverage over there and have your repellant spray on hand as the sandflies just waiting of you to open your car door (; yes they do ;)

    Simone2020-03-08T00:00:00Z

  • Beautiful apartment and base for exploring the Haast region. Incredible drive in from the South and then a very comfortable stay. The deserted beach was fantastic. Highly recommended - thanks!

    Chetan2020-01-15T00:00:00Z
  • Really enjoyed our stay at Warrick's place on our drive up along the West Coast. We were impressed as the studio felt larger than it appeared in the photos and the views of the sea came as advertised - absolutely stunning. The studio's location enabled us to explore an area that was very off the beaten path. WiFi in the unit was quick as well. Being right on the beach there were sandflies but we were able to largely keep them at bay with a DEET repellant. Would definitely return!

    Nick2020-01-11T00:00:00Z
  • Warrick’s beach studio is literally on the edge of the earth. It’s incredible and the pictures don’t do justice to the beautiful reality of being on a beach at sunset with no one for miles! The studio is incredible spacious, well-appointed, with a great bathroom and perfect little kitchen. Windows are everywhere so you go to bed and wake up with the sound and sights of the ocean. For visitors, definitely beware of the sand flies that will get you, but that’s not any fault of Warrick’s! ...Highly recommend this spot, was a total gem on this rather quiet part of the West Coast.

    Michael2019-12-21T00:00:00Z
  • Warrick's beach studio is where you want to spend a remote, romantic stay on the west coast. And it is remote, so bring books for rainy days, since wifi can be spotty. The studio is large, very comfortable, beautifully furnished and appointed, and the kitchen is quite complete. You will love the bathroom and the view and sound of the crashing waves!

The Barn has amazing views into the Wilkin (URL HIDDEN) a wonderful place to rest after exploring the mountains of the Mt Aspiring National Park. The log burner makes it cozy and comfortable. It's a simple and special place.
Beautiful walks and open spaces in the middle of a high country sheep station. Rivers and lakes very close. Bedroom 2 can be converted into a super king bed.
There are many great walks very close to the Barn: Blue Pools, Isthmus Peak, Siberian Valley, Young valley and Makarora valley. The Makarora Pub serves good pub dinners and the Makarora Country Cafe is open during the day for lunch.

  • Don’t miss the chance to stay in this wonderful “barn”. No detail has been spared to make this a luxurious stay. The surrounding scenery is breathtaking. David2020-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • Pete was a great host. We had a most enjoyable time staying in the Barn. So nice to enjoy a beautiful sunset on the couch outside the room. Pete was a wealth of information of things to do in the area.

    Christina2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • The house space and facilities are good, but the place is sparsely populated, there is no mobile phone signal, and the only wifi speed to communicate with the outside world is very slow. The sound of the waves in Shanghai is very loud at night. Check-out after 10 o'clock, the network has been automatically disconnected. This situation has never been encountered in other homestays, and there is no way to communicate externally ... 6 children have received an additional $ 500 cash room fee, compared to the location, facilities and services. The price is not high.

    Qian2020-01-25T00:00:00Z

Welcome to a unique super comfortable king room with rammed earth walls and spectacular mountain views. Makarora is an adventurers paradise; fishing, tramping, hunting, boating, star gazing all on our doorstep. A full breakfast is included.
Our property sits between two high country sheep stations and is a small stroll down to the river for great fishing. We live in a rammed earth house which remains cool in the hot summer months and is heated by a large fire during winter. The Wilkin room has a very comfortable king bed, a fireplace, an en suite with heated floor and towel rail and uninterrupted views of the Wilkin Valley. This is a place for adventures or for star gazing...a respite from a busy world.
Mt Aspiring National Park has many beautiful tracks and well maintained huts for day or overnight walks. Makarora is a small farming community with a cafe, local pub and DOC centre with warm hearted people passionate about living here. It's a fabulous place for adventure; fishing, tramping, hunting, boating, mountain biking and exploring. Heli tours and jet boating are both available from here.
  • Truly one of the best b&b’s we’ve ever stayed at...the location is incredible, with gorgeous mountain and valley views. The room was lovely and quiet, the best night of sleep on our trip. Best of all, Pete and Janine were so friendly and laid back, which was the perfect welcome after a long intense day of hiking. And the dinner they prepared was exquisite, paired with delicious local wines. An unforgettable experience all around.

  • We loved our stay at the WildEarth Lodge! It was so beautifully designed and appointed. Every detail was thoughtfully placed and created an inviting atmosphere. The view from our French doors at the foot of our bed was amazing! Pete's breakfast was delicious and, again, the table was set with care and was as beautiful to look at as the food. We especially appreciated a later check-out so we didn't have to rush and could enjoy every minute.

    Brenda2020-01-28T00:00:00Z

  • This is the most fantastic BnB. It has a great view in the valley and Pete and Janine were the most charming owners. If we ever come back to NZ then will this destnation be one of the dearest to revisit, just to pass more time with that most sympathetic couple. I do regret that we could not stay longer.

    Peter2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • Just book this ! It’s incredible, breathtaking setting , view from bedroom is just beautiful. Quiet , peaceful, fantastic food. Eve meal was delicious. Huge comfortable bed , feels like a very special treat Pete and Janine are perfect hosts, greeted with a cold beer and then left to unwind in their beautiful garden. Just the best Airbnb we have ever stayed in.

    Karen2020-01-15T00:00:00Z
  • This must be the most enchanting Airbnb we've stayed in. The view is breathtaking, the hospitality so warm and the rooms are beautifully created. We couldn't ask for more. Only sorry we weren't there for longer

  • This place is magical! Stunning view, flowers everywhere, and incredibly gracious hosts. Would recommend to anyone visiting Makarora! We did a fun helicopter/ jet boat trip with Wilkin River jets nearby.

  • NEXT LEVEL Spectacular setting, elegantly rustic with very thoughtful touches. The Wilkin room was cozy and tastefully decorated. The bedding was first class. Like a big fluffy cloud. Charismatic and charming hosts that went out of their way to create a really memorable stay. This is their passion and it shows. Recommend staying for dinner - a nice way to relax and unwind and meet other guests. Dinner was good, local, fresh and organic. Breakfast was hearty and delicious. Highly recommend this wonderful place and will definitely stay here again in a heartbeat. Thank you Pete and Janine for being part of our wonderful journey.

The Haast Room has beautiful views of the Wilkin Valley with rammed earth walls and a comfortable queen size bed. Makarora is an adventurer's paradise: fishing, tramping, hunting, boating, star gazing, all on our doorstep. A full breakfast is included.
Our property sits between two high country sheep stations and is a small stroll down to the river for great fishing. We live in a rammed earth house which remains cool in the hot summer months and is heated by a large fire during winter.
It's also a very restful place with exquisite mountain views.
  • This is an amazing home designed by a gifted architect (Janine) with superb views of a stunning valley in the South Island of New Zealand. Though we only stayed one night, we felt like members of the family by the end. I loved the long tramps down the driveway and through the pastures. Jim was a most entertaining and personable host who cooked us a fine meal for dinner at short notice. Even though the rain was blowing sideways when we arrived, we felt cozy and welcome and inspired. All in all, what a place! What a privilege to share the place, if only for a day, a night and a morning.

  • A real haven in a beautiful spot. We had a fabulous stay here with Pete and janine, one of the nicest places we stayed in New Zealand and their hospitality was excellent. Beautiful views, great for star gazing at night (as long as you have the clear skies) yummy breakfast and comfortable bed. Would recommend to anyone to stay here.

  • This place is heaven on earth! Our stay was beyond amazing! We arrived to wonderful and welcoming hosts and a warm fire burning in our room. We awoke to the morning sounds of the birds chirping and baby lambs feeding right outside our door. Pete cooked us a wonderful full course breakfast. We will definitely stay longer next time.

  • This place is so cozy and made me feel at home right away. Nice touches like fresh cut flowers in every room. Super comfy bed, I didn't want to get up in the morning! Great views and location. Breakfast was gigantic and awesome. Love this place, want to go back!!

  • Beautiful accommodation right on the rugged coastline. Our room was clean and super comfortable. Breaky was delicious! Neroli was a fantastic host.

    Sam2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Very cozy room inside a big house that co-share with the host and other guests. Actual look is even better than in the pictures. Very clean and tidy. The room is open to a lawn and facing the sea. Nice view! Decent choices of and delicious breakfast cooked by host. Not quite soundproof though so you will hear people speak (and yawn) in next room. But it does not affect our stay. We met and chat with the other guests during our stay. Will recommend this to anyone travelling near to Haast.

  • We had a wonderful stay at the Collyer House. Neroli was an excellent host!! We enjoyed speaking with her and Bryan in the evening and appreciated all of the suggestions of places to visit after we had to unexpectedly change plans. We would definitely stay here again!
