Places to stay in Lairg
'The Steading’ is a rustic cabin on a working farm with wood burning stove set near the North Coast 500 route. Ideal for a writing, musical or yoga retreat. Lots of walking and cycling routes or simply relaxing in front of the fire with a cup of tea. Stunning views across the countryside. NO SHOWER / no hot running water. Basic bedding available. No phone signal/WiFi. Enjoy the peace of the Highlands and being wakened only by the noise of the wildlife, sheep and cows. Sleeps 2 or 4-5 if family.
The Steading is on my father in law’s farm. Alex Houston's farm is set in 100 acres of rustic farmland with a lazy river running through it. The Steading is private, next door to alex’s farm house. Guests have exclusive use of the entire building and the front door is lockable with your own key. The scenery and tranquility is breathtaking and there's miles of unspoilt walking and off-road cycling. It is detached and has two floors. Downstairs open plan living area complete with wood burning stove (no central heating - but the fire is better anyway!), kitchen area, table and chairs with a small toilet room and sink. Cold running water. NO running hot water - but there is a kettle for hot water. (Please note there is NO shower or bath in the steading). ** Guests should bring wood and firelighters with you for the fire ** The kitchen area is very basic - kettle, plug in double hob, sink (cold water only), a fridge and a microwave. There are some pots, pans, mugs and cutlery etc there for you to use. There is no running hot water. There is no shower in the Steading. Some guests have used the showers at the leisure centre in Alness (6 miles away), and you could schedule in getting some extra food supplies in the supermarket at the same time. There are two handmade wooden single beds which can be pushed together to form a double. Basic bedding is provided - though it will be very simple and not hotel standard! You will be staying on a working croft that has approximately 100 sheep and 30 cows. Alex lives on and works the farm and he would be happy to show anyone around the farm and help out with running of it if you wished to experience true Highland crofting! Alex is also an artist and oil painter and has taught art at secondary schools all his life. Families - although the Steading sleeps 2 in our description, families with children (sleeping up to 2 adults and 2-3 children) would be very welcome - please just message to enquire. It is ideal for families as a bit of a an adventure out of the normal city life! You can be guaranteed a quiet holiday as their is no TV, no WiFi, no phone signal and the nearest shop is 8 miles (12km) away. You can get mobile signal 4 miles (6km) back towards Alness. As this is a working farm there are definitely NO PETS ALLOWED. Please bring along some home comforts if you wish - a hand towel for the bathroom, sheets for the mattresses. We don't regularly launder the bits and bobs of towels / blankets etc that are there as spares - so bring some of your own for your own comfort! Also please be warned regarding mice, insects etc - this is a farm, and the Steading is a very basic converted building so there may sometimes be animal intruders in the building which we can’t really stop! So any food should be kept in sealed containers. Lastly - we hope the Steading captures your sense of adventure and that you’d like to stay here! Check out our reviews from our guests to see for yourself what our guests think of it. It certainly is a unique place for a getaway!
If you are looking for peace and tranquility on your holiday then the center of the Highlands of Scotland is for you. This is a remote stay with only the noise of the country farm animals and the crackle of the wood burner! You can go for hours before you will see a car. It also makes it the best location for walking and cycling. It is a converted farm outbuilding with a mix of stone and wood. Entrance is a concrete floor. Toilet is a concrete floor with a flushing toilet and a hand sink. (Please note there is no shower or bath). Downstairs has a wooden floor with a worktop and fitted sink with running water, fridge, microwave, small cooker, power sockets and lighting. There is a table and chairs. There is a wood burning stove which will certainly keep you all cosy! Stairs are wooden. Upstairs is a wooden floor and there are two camp beds. There is power sockets. Please take your sleeping bag with you. There is a cycle shed and car parking available. Please leave the property as you found it - unplugging all appliances when you are not in the property. Check in is around 3pm but we can easily give you a location for the house key if you need to arrive before then (you must remember that there is no phone signal so this has to be arranged before you arrive at the property.)
  • Our stay at the steading was exactly what we needed. We were warned about the cold nights and made sure to bring enough layers and slept very well. The accommodation is very simple and exactly what we needed after a busy few months. Thank you Alex and Fiona!

  • This is a beautiful little place if you are comfortable with simple living. We brought quite a lot of wood because it was February and got through all of it. Alex is greatly welcoming and the location is great. Good access to stunning parts of the country and nice to get the quiet that comes with no mobile phones and no internet. I’ll be back again for a third visit! Thank you for a lovely stay!

  • Lovely place and so nice to meet Alex, a beautiful human!

    Francesco2020-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed a one night stay here on a subzero February night. Alex was so kind and welcoming when we arrived, coming out to meet us in the dark and getting the fire going in no time, which was very much appreciated! The space was actually a bit better equipped than we expected, and although it's very basic we had everything we needed for the night to cook, relax and keep warm. We imagined how dreamy it would be here in spring/summer when it's a wee bit warmer... A lovely peaceful stay.

    Laura2020-02-13T00:00:00Z
  • What an absolute gem of a place! Basic and rustic but as campers we found it to be more luxury than we were expecting (being used to small tents the space and a kitchen was lovely!) We stayed on a weekend in Feb with some pretty rough weather and lots of snow. Roasted up the log burner and stayed warm enough! The walk to Fyrish monument that was recommended was beautiful and we had a great stay! 100% would go again and hope we can some time in the future!

    Emily2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • It was absolutely wonderful. Felt very welcome there straight away upon arriving. Enjoyed our time up in Inverness. Hope to stay again in the future. You’re more than cosy and warm in the winter with the log burner going. It’s wasn’t difficult to keep the space warm when we stayed up in February (-2°c). Don’t miss out on the experience. Eliot

  • My friends and I had a great time at The Steading. Alex was a great host, and we found it very easy to find the location with the detailed directions given. The details Fiona provided were very accurate and allowed us to come prepared. We found the lodging very clean and cozy, perfect for our weekend away.

    Claire2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants an escape from city life. We saw more stars at night here than we ever have in our lives. The steading itself is basic but it’s so cosy once you’ve got the fire on. Alex who owns the farm is so lovely and friendly. We’ll be returning!

LOOKING FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT? THIS COULD BE IT, BUT IT'S NOT FOR THE FAINT-HEARTED. YOU NEED TO BE HARDY, CONFIDENT IN YOUR ABILITY TO LOOK AFTER YOURSELF WHEN THE TRAPPINGS OF MODERN LIFE ARE NOT SO ACCESSIBLE! BEFORE BOOKING, PLEASE READ ALL THE INFORMATON, ESPECIALLY REGARDING USING THE WOOD-BURNER - THE ONLY HEATING AVAILABLE. THERE could BE A SMELL OF SMOKE! KNOW YOUR LIMITATIONS AND THINK IF THIS IS REALLY FOR YOU. OUTDOOR TYPES USED TO CAMPING OR BOTHIES WILL HAVE NO TROUBLE!
Dave saved the Signal Box from being destroyed when no longer required on the railway, and transported it 12 miles to our home. Remember - it is a SMALL wooden box in the country, not a house! We have installed a small double sofa bed and a single, a microwave, kettle and toaster and other stuff to make it pretty comfortable. Bed linen, towels, crockery, cutlery, etc all provided. This is basic, rural accommodation! At the top of our driveway you will see a silly silver motorbike 'sculpture' - this will help you find us. Around the property are other quirky items made by Dave! We try to keep the interior of the box in keeping with its age but with modern appliances and comforts. The single bed is standard size; the sofa bed is a small double, two adults sharing do have to like each other! We are dog friendly so anyone with allergies should be aware. Also with the age of the box and a wood burning stove there is likely to be some dust, no matter how we try! This is not really suitable for very young children.
Rural village with the stunning Cassley Falls a short walk away where you can watch salmon leap (at certain times of year). Central location making it ideal for touring all three coasts of the Northern Highlands.
  • I loved staying in the old signal box. It’s quirky and unusual. I like this kind of thing, if you’re used to Egyptian cotton sheets and luxuries then this place isn’t for you. If you like silent nights and rustic living it’s the place to be. The stove was ace when it was fired up and made the place nice n cosy on a chilly night. The WiFi is excellent so I could watch a bit of stuff on iPlayer etc. There’s lots of info and a great picture album showing how the whole signal box was relocated to its present site. Dave and Mary are a lovely couple and we’re on hand to help me with anything I needed. There’s some basic cooking facilities inc a microwave which was useful for me taking some food with me. I’d definitely stay again.

  • Amazing hosts with lots of knowledge of the local area. Definitely a unique little place to stay.

    Steph2020-03-17T00:00:00Z
  • A really unique and quirky place to stay. Mary and Dave are fantastic hosts, and are so friendly and welcoming. It felt like coming to visit a friend! The space itself has such a great history, and is very well equipped and comfortable. The provided breakfast is very filling and kept us going all day. We stayed in winter and no problems with the temperature at all! Would recommend to all for a something special and different.

    Annie2020-01-07T00:00:00Z
  • I had such a wonderful time staying in Mary and Dave's cabin. The space was perfect, clean, tidy and super warm even in the depths of winter once the stove was going (top tip... feed the fire from the top to stop smoke blow back). Dave was perfect for suggesting local walks with my dogs and I had a really perfect New Years Day walking to Cassley Falls and the fascinating graveyard. I can't recommend the cabin enough and will definitely stay again!

    Rebecca2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay in the Signal Box, the fire kept us so warm, even in December! Dave gave us some recommendations for some beautiful walks in the local area which were amazing. Stunning area, great hospitality and would really recommend. Many thanks!

    Charlotte2019-12-29T00:00:00Z
  • This is a perfect place for a hardy (in winter) couple/family who want to get away from it all. Expect great hospitality and a lovely welcome. The unusual life of the signal box is fantastic to share in and a great base for many Sutherland sites. Perfect peace and tranquillity.

Lovely spacious, rustic holiday flat to let within our traditional Highland Croft House. 1 Bedroom (sleeps 2). Fully equipped kitchen, living room and bathroom with bath and rinsing shower. Situated 4 miles North of Lairg. Beautiful, peaceful setting. Ideal area for walking, fishing, exploring or simply relaxing. Please note: this is self catering accommodation.
The apartment is attached, but separate to our family home. There are lots books, games, local information and DVD's for you to make use of, should you wish during your stay. I am also very happy to recommend places to visit or give you information on hikes around the area.
The apartment is located in a crofting/farming location. The property is also adjacent to our family run campsite. A very peaceful area only 4 miles from the village of Lairg. Please note: there are 2 grocer shops and gas station in the village of Lairg. We would also recommend The Pier cafe for lunches and evening meals which is also in Lairg.
  • Sasha and her family are wonderful. I booked on the day of the checkin and thankfully for her fast response, gave me salvation when it was needed most! Sasha was very welcoming and the apartment overlooked nature in its best light. A spacious and warm cottage which made your feel like home away from home with a Scottish twist of course. They have definitely put in some work as it looks newly refurbished. Their back garden leads onto a small pond and great out door space. I did not need to venture out as everything I needed was at the house. Fully equipped with any movie, book or game you may want. Greatest touch was the fire was ready to go when I arrived. I will recommend Sasha's place for anyone who wants to have an amazing host with great facilities in a divine location. I will definitely be visiting again soon!

    Rachel2020-03-26T00:00:00Z
  • Sasha's place is a lovely comfortable flat with everything you need. It has a relaxed and homely atmosphere, the flat is ideally situated for exploring Lairg and beyond. You won't be disappointed. Sasha is a great host, communication beforehand was excellent and she was there to meet us on arrival even though it was a dark and wet night. Thank you for everything.

  • Nice place and very handy for Lairg.

    Catherine2020-01-31T00:00:00Z
  • Sasha welcomes you like you're coming home for the holidays :) a great little place, Sasha communicated quickly and gave great directions and local tips. The house, all and all, is perfectly cozy and perfectly located for adventures around Sutherland. We adored Ravens rock gorge- don't miss this woodland gem!!

    Lisa2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Sasha's apartment is the coziest one we ever saw. It has the amazing fireplace, a lot of books and a nice bed. Sasha is a super friendly host who reacts almost immediatly and fixes stuff really fast. The apartment was as clean as can be expected when staying between sheep and horses and when all the closets and shelves are full of stuff, meaning that it was a bit dusty and there were some tiny spider webs after a few days. The aparments location is central, perfect for the north coast 500. There is a Spar supermarket on a 5-minute drive and an excellent restaurant (The Pier), unfortunately only open around the weekend. This apartment is absolute recommendation!

    Gerdine2019-11-12T00:00:00Z
  • Great find, great value, clean and warm, Wish we could have stayed longer, If in the area again we will be staying again.

  • This apartment is an ideal base in a beautiful part of the Highlands. It is clean, warm, comfortable and well equipped. Communication with Jackie was very easy and she always replied very quickly. There is a well stocked Spar shop over the road and a good fish and chip shop that cooks everything fresh to order. I’d highly recommend Swordale Butchers in nearby Bonar Bridge for excellent meat.

  • We loved our stay at the Old Dairy. Immediately in walking in it felt like a home not a hotel, that is what we were hoping for. There were four of us, all adults, two beautiful bedrooms with lovely crisp bed linen. The bathroom had a wonderful shower which seems very important to us North Americans for some reading. We had a bit of trouble with the washing machine, but had lots of laughs out of that and Jackie took care of the problem quickly. The location is perfect, right in the middle if the Highlands, easy access to the east and west coast . We stayed in Lairg as it was the ancestral home of my great grandfather and my grandfather spent much of his youth there, so the location was extra special for me

  • This property was excellent. Nicely located and good directions. The cottage had everything we needed with a good kitchen, comfortable bed, great wifi and TV. We parked right outside the door. Would definitely recommend!

  • Great place to stop over at. Nice flat.

    Shaun2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • Nice roomy flat, parking right outside the door! Comfortable living room furniture and wood stove to take the chill off. Right in town, so more light than we are used to, but surprisingly little street noise.

    Mandi2019-08-30T00:00:00Z
  • The accommodation is functional and clean. We appreciated that the stove was prepared so that we enjoy a small fire at night.

  • Nice flat in Lairg, a great place to explore the area from.

    Richard2019-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • Lairg is quite a small community, so don't expect too much in terms of facilities. Due to its location, however, it ist great for daytrips througout the whole of northern Scotland, in particular the northwest.

    Joachim2019-08-01T00:00:00Z
  • A great little apartment with plenty of living space. Clean and comfortable with everything we needed. Close to all amenities. (Thanks for the shortbread biscuits). We definitely recommend.

    William2019-09-27T00:00:00Z
  • Louise is an excellent host, who is very welcoming and on hand to help if we needed anything. The cabin was clean, cosy and was the perfect stop for some highland exploring. We loved the small touches around the cabin which made it homely, just what we needed after doing the NC500. We highly recommend this property and we will definitely be back!

  • Such a kind family. We had the whole of upstairs to ourselves which was really nice. They had everything you could possibly want. From local information to an extra heater in the room. Sweets, coffees. Also can I just once more comment on the bread at breakfast. It was the best bread I have had in my life.

  • Avery comfortable bedroom, extremely clean and homely. Excellent continental breakfast! Very warm welcome from Trish and family.

    Rachel2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • What a lovely Family! We felt so well looked after and nothing was too much trouble for Trish, Steve and their two fantastic boys. They gave us so much of their private time (and lots of cups of tea) that we felt almost like a family. Location - bliss, breakfasts - delicious, portions - generous, beds - super comfy, home made coffee cake - YUM! Not to mention that surprise dinner party! Will never forget this one! ;-) So glad we found a place with real human beings. Thank You!

  • Very comfortable stay in a large room and bathroom. Great breakfast and super friendly host!

    Fabien2020-01-07T00:00:00Z
  • I've been completely seduced by Trish and her cozy house. It's been the first time I really felt at home during my road trip. I was like in my own family, we talked for hours around a cup of tea, that she proposed to warm myself from the cold weather outside. She's so friendly. And the space I had upstairs so large and comfortable, with nice high beds and tweed covers. Very quiet and restful. Would love to go again and stay longer!

    Isabelle2019-11-11T00:00:00Z
  • Just what the doctor ordered after a very long drive! A perfect, private base in the Highlands from which to explore. The borrowed ice-scraper was very helpful the next morning!

  • The hosts were very friendly, and make sure you're not lacking anything. The hotel itself looks just like in the pictures and I've really enjoyed the decor; The bar and pool area are lovely and certainly make me want to come back with some friends next time. Wireless signal is a bit spotty outside of the reception area however, so the place could use some wi-fi extenders.

  • We had a stay of some wonderful 4 days at the house. Communication with the renters was very easy, also the handover of the keys at arrival as well as at departure. The house was very clean, obviously refurbished recently. The kitchen was very well equiped, and we also encountered a huge amount of toys our kids were allowed to play with. There were 2 TVs and 2 DVD-player as well. Although being located at the main street of Lairg, it was very quiet - the street is not what you would call a highway ;-) We can only recomend the house and would definitely book again!

Clean and very comfortable. The tin tent is compact, bright and cheerful and an ideal alternative to being under canvas - sleeps up to 2 people. Self catered accommodation with electric, gas and all basic cooking essentials provided to make your stay more comfortable. Please note - there is no water to the Tin Tent. Toilet, shower & washing up facilities are located in the campsite facilities block (situated a very short distance away).
The tin tent is situated on our small, family run campsite which is adjacent to our croft where we keep a small amount of livestock. The campsite is just 4 miles north of Lairg. An ideal location for exploring central sutherland as well as the north, east and west coasts. Perfect area for walking, fishing, exploring or simply relaxing. The Tin tent is supplied with electric & gas. It has a small kitchen area which has a oven and hob, a fridge, and storage cupboards for your essentials. Although there is a sink in the kitchen we ask that you do not use this but rather the sink in the communal outdoor kitchen area. We provide basic cooking utensils for your use. The cozy and very comfortable living area converts easily to a double bed for a relaxing night's sleep. We can provide base sheets with pillows and sleeping bags should you require. The Tin Tent is heated. Towels are not provided. There is a separate bathroom/storage area for your clothes etc. Unfortunately the shower and toilet are not in use. Guests have access to the communal shower/toilets.
The Tin Tent and campsite are located in a crofting/farming location.
  • Lovely hosts and lovely tin tent. Just what we needed - was luxurious for us after several nights of wild camping. We were able to have a comfortable nights sleep and dry out. Facilities are great too, and very clean.

    Kate2019-09-28T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely host and Beautiful location! Remember that it rains (a lot!) in Scotland ;) so bring some boots for when it gets muddy around the campsite.

  • Wonderful little place Found last min. Sasha was very quick to respond and excellent communication. Set in the middle of wide open space and farm land. Beautiful 360` views. And perfect location for discovering The villages and lochs around. The site itself and tin tent was outstanding. Everything you could possibly need. So much so, we decided to stay an extra night. We loved it and can't wait to return xx

    Dawn2019-09-20T00:00:00Z
  • Nice caravan, enjoyable, relaxing weekend.

    Andy2019-09-19T00:00:00Z
  • Fab few nights in the tin tent which was lovely and clean and cosy. The toilets and shower block, along with the campers kitchen was fab, again lovely and clean. There was also a wee games room where we spent an evening playing pool and darts which is a great addition to the sight. Sasha's camp sight is a wee gem and I would highly recommend it.

    Camille2019-09-16T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful place with amazing view

    Talip2019-09-10T00:00:00Z
  • On arrival I was greeted by Sasha's lovely daughter who showed me around and made sure I knew where everything was and how to work the heater and cooker. The tin tent was wonderful, such a comfy place for me as I am used to camping however this is a wee bit luxury for the hardened Highlands fisher. The tin tent is located right next to the shower and toilets, if you are used to three days without a shower while camping like me then having a wee morning shower is great. I bought a load of stuff for my two night stay but I forgot milk and coffee, of course the essentials however I was over the moon that coffee, tea, sugar and milk were all there which saved me a trip as I arrived early evening and wanted to get straight to the loch for a cast. Sasha showed me the larger static caravan and I will definitely be back with the family as this is one of the most beautiful parts of the world located just a stones throw from loch shin. Highly recommended if you are looking to explore the hills and lochs of Sutherland, just a 30-40 minute drive to the Cam Loch and Loch Borralan as well as the countless hill and roadside lochs.

    Peter2019-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • I had a lovely night in Sasha’s accommodation. Sasha and her husband were very hospitable and I took advantage of the optional evening meal and breakfast, both of which were delicious and great value. I would certainly stay again

Beautiful stone built bothy dating back to 19th century. Lovingly restored with original stonework around a cosy wood burner. We offer outstanding views across the Kyle of Sutherland and are situated in quiet countryside. The Bothy has a small kitchen (with limited cooking e.g. microwave oven), bathroom with shower and use of laundry facilities if required. Parking is shared with owners but plenty room. We are situated 1 hour North of Inverness and only 1 hour from Ullapool on the NC500 route.
Rowanberry Bothy is an ideal escape into the beauty of the Scottish Highlands. We are surrounded by woodland, rivers and lochs with plenty of walking, fishing and hill climbing right on the doorstep. You may spot white tailed eagles, pine martens, sika deer and otters in this area. Within the Bothy, the stacker beds can be utilised as one large double or two single beds. The small kitchenette has a kettle, toaster and microwave oven . There is a newly installed toilet and shower.
Recommend the Pier Restaurant in Lairg for great food. There is a small cafe about 3 miles from the bothy which serves coffees and lunches plus a hotel which offers meals all year round. The small historic town of Dornoch is a must visit, as is Dunrobbin Castle.

The Steading ground floor comprises of a spacious kitchen and a bath room with a shower. Up the stairs you find a double bedroom. Quite compact but very cosy.
Wi-fi is up and running. We have a eclectic collection of art in the Steading . Many of our friends are artists.
Very rural up a bumpy track.
  • Sue's place is literally heaven on earth. It is a magical place, full of art, little trinkets and nature. The accomodation itself was very spacious, extremely well-equipped and really clean. Sue was a very warm-hearted host and always helpful. The directions to accomodation were flawless. The surroundings are very calm and peaceful, perfect for a quiet getaway. There's almost nothing better than opening your over-bed window in a cozy bunk-bed and looking at the freshly-fallen snow whilst the wood-stove is warming up the house. This accomodation was the best we had during our 2-week-holiday in Scotland and we would love to come back one day. Highly recommended.

  • We are very happy to have met Susan and John. A super nice couple, welcoming and generous. We thank them very much for this stay. We absolutely recommend.

    Mathilde2019-09-12T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful location, really fun accommodation, and the friendliest hosts. This place is quirky and just right for someone looking for a rustic, quiet, atypical airbnb.

    Natasha2019-09-05T00:00:00Z
  • We booked this place due to its quirkiness, we fancied something a bit different. Sue was there to great us on our arrival, make us feel at home and show us around the Strathy. She’d already got the log fire going for us! It doesn’t matter that it’s off the beaten track as the Strathy is fully equipped for self catering. We cooked both nights we were there with a plethora of cooking pots, pans and utensils. We wanted for nothing. The bed took some getting used to up in the eves but it all added to the quirkiness of the place. The shower was nice and hot and if you get a bit chilly there’s a red hot heater in there as well as a heater in the bedroom. There’s lots of interesting artwork about the Strathy and grounds so go and explore. I particularly liked the big drift wood throne and the robot frogs. Sue was conscientious, attentive, friendly and helpful along with Bob her little helper. N.B. The listing does state that Sue may want access to the shower and fridge in the Strathy but we never actually saw her using either during our 2 night stay. We would definitely stay here again if in the area (I would dearly like to spend time with Bob again).

    Alex2019-08-21T00:00:00Z
  • The accommodation is just as pretty and individual as in the pictures. The kitchen has everything you need, and the bedroom is extremely comfortable. The description and the pictures are perfect! Sue and John were very friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay there.

  • Dorie's place is very nice and spacious. The kitchen is very well stocked with appliances. Dorie even provided us with a large amount of breakfast foods and fruit! She herself is fantastic at communication and very accommodating. We managed to lock ourselves out of the house late in one evening, but Dorie and Gillian both handled it amazingly well and Gillian came to unlock the door for us. The house itself is in a good location. We were well looked after.

  • Dear Dorie, We stayed at Tiverton House for three nights in August 2017. We felt very welcome, when we arrived we found out that hostess Dorie had provided us with fresh fruit, milk, bread and eggs. The house is very comfortable, all rooms are spacious and we had a great time. Our dinners at the hotel in Lairg, just a two minute walk from Tiverton House, tasted very good. All the people in Lairg that we met were ever so friendly! Thanks for your hospitality Dorie, we very much enjoyed our stay at your house! Greetings, Marian (and all the others) from Holland.

  • James's accommodation is clean and very comfortable. It is very well connected, has a Lidl 2 minutes walk and the main road 1 minute by car. James is very kind and detailed, I leave several food and drink items in the fridge.

  • The bunkhouse is a perfect stop off in Invershin. We stopped here before our final day of LEJOG which was a great stop. Cheryl made us very welcome, with good food and bar.

  • Very nice hostel. The owner, and the employees are curious and engage the conversation easily. Very friendly.

  • We booked for one night but ended up staying 2 nights here. It was a fantastic hotel, we stayed in the bunkhouse that felt more like a hostel but we had our own private room. Everyone we met there was really lovely and very helpful with local tips, It was a great central location too. The only downside I could see was a lack of lockers or lock on our door but that wasn't a problem for us, we left our important things in the car. Love this place and will definitely be back!

    Cat2018-08-05T00:00:00Z
  • As a foreigner in the Highlands, Cheryl and her lovely hotel was a wonderful surprise. The stay was super comfortable with nice communication from Cheryl. The bunk beds are really worth every penny. I would totally recommend anyone to visit or stay Cheryl's hotel/hostel/bar. And please, try the black pudding (it's as good as they say)

  • a great inexpensive base for touring around the north of scotland. highly recommended

  • The Invershin Bunkhouse was recommended by Kingdom Guides. I based myself here to complete the Munros - Ben Hope, Conival, Ben More Assynt & Ben Klibreck over 3 days. All walks are within approx. 1hr from the bunkhouse. The bunkhouse was great, clean rooms & a nice hot shower, also managed to score a room to myself. There is a well stocked bar & hearty food, perfect for after a day in the hills. Staff were very friendly & helpful. Highly recommend staying here!

A caravan on a croft (traditional small farm) in the Scottish Highlands. Enjoy glamping here with stunning views, surrounded by nature and animals. Feel free to join in the daily work on the croft or explore the stunning surroundings. Go hiking or mountainbiking in the hills, explore stonecircles and cairns or take a trip to the beach, Dunrobin castle or Glenmorangie distillery - each just a short drive away. We are tucked away at the end of the road, yet within a short drive off the A9.
The caravan is basic and comfy: it has a double bed and a seating area, which can be turned into a bed, too, if necessary. So it would suit a couple or a family with up to two young kids, but not two couples / four adults. There is a kitchenette with a gascooker, fridge and sink. The water comes from the mains and power is connected, too. The kitchen and bathroom facilities are located in the big shed a few metres walk away from the caravan. They are shared with other holiday guests. Our fully equipped big kitchen has a generous seating area, gas cooker, oven, fridge and microwave. In the unisex bathroom guests can use two showers and an eco friendly composting toilet. The views stretch across the hills and the valley of Grudie, through which the river Brora runs. You can go for hikes here and explore thousands of years of history, from cairns (stone graves) and stone circles to the remains of a clearance village (forcefully cleared in the 18th and 19th century). The caravan is parked up on the Croft and if need be (when it gets too windy) can easily be towed a few metres back beside the old shed building, where it's sheltered. This doesn't change your view much. The main house is a short distance away, so guests can enjoy their peace and quiet. We are a working farm with sheep, cows, horses, chickens, dogs and cats. The livestock are distributed across the fields of the croft, though it might happen that the sheep are grazing around the caravan or bring their lambs here for a snooze. If you fancy, you can collect your fresh breakfast egg from our happy hens. Our ponies happily have themselves brushed or taken for walks. You can also join in the croft activities, if you're up for it. Depending on the time of year, we are lambing, shearing, making hay, feeding out or shifting sheep with our collie dogs. We are surrounded by nature and wildlife, with deer, rabbits, pheasants and owls living in our woods. By going for an early morning or a late night walk you've got good chances of encountering them. From September onwards, the Aurora Borealis can be seen dancing in the sky.
Our croft is situated 1 1/4 drive North of Inverness, 15 minutes from the A9 in the tranquil crofting community of Rogart. The small village of Pittentrail, 10 minutes from here, has a little Spar shop with a post office. The pub opposite is open in the evenings, there's a bar and they do lovely meals, too. Various beaches, the Glenmorangie Distillery and Dunrobin Castle and Gardens are within a short drive. There is a seal colony down the road at Loch Fleet and there is a popular mountainbike track in Golspie. Dornoch has a few nice shops and restaurants an a little museum. The North Coast 500 (A9) is 15 minutes from here.
  • Great place to stay, with amazing additional kitchen making it even better! lovely space, and brilliantly remote.

    George2020-03-24T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful place - once you've arrived, you'll never want to leave. I stayed ten nights for writing. The caravan provides all the essentials one needs out there to stay cozy, comfy, happy. The animals are better entertainment than any Tv. Steffi & her family make every wish you might have come true. They're lovely people with a good sense of what makes life, life. And just a private detail: I saw about one rainbow a day up there - how crazy is that?

    Tobin2019-09-17T00:00:00Z
  • A cosy little caravan lost in the Scottish highlands. Amazing view just near a cute farm. Definitely one of my favorite places so far.

  • Possibly the best experience in scotland. Remote and beautiful, without distractions. If you need some time by yourself, this is where to do it.

  • Stefanie is a great hostess. She is very attentive to all our wishes. The view from the caravan is wonderful. The area is beautiful. I can recommend the accommodation to 100% :). Also the deer fillet and the vegetables from the garden we bought at Stefanie was delicious !!

Lagbuie is situated in the heart of Sutherland, in the village of Lairg. It is a central location for touring the Northern Highlands and is just 15 minutes off the North Coast 500 route. Lagbuie is a perfect base for a family or group of travellers wishing to explore the area. The house was once part of the Lairg Electric Laundry, built in 1926 by the owner of Lairg Estate, Sir William Edgar Horne.
Lagbuie is situated on a very quiet road. You have full access to the garden, garden seating area and all rooms in the house.
Lairg has many amenities including 2 shops, a post office, mobile bank, 2 restaurants, a pub, 2 cafes, a visitor centre and boats for hire on Loch Shin, all within walking distance.
  • Fantastic size house. Location was perfect and the host is amazing. I would highly recommend staying here.

  • Nice, cozy little house to visit the Highlands

    Laurent2019-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • We had a fantastic stay at Lagbuie. It is a lovely house and has everything you need for a perfect stay. Although most of the furniture is quite old it fits in with the style of house. When we arrived the door was unlocked so check-in was easy. The house was spotlessly clean. Although the garden is very small there is a nice seating area just outside where with weather permitting you can watch the sun set. There is a bar attached to a hotel just five minutes away. Also in the village is petrol station with a well stocked Costcutter shop, another well stocked Spar shop, a great fish and chip shop. We would also highly recommend The Pier restaurant. It's just next to the Spar shop and overlooks the Little Loch Shin. We had two meals there during our stay. The menu, service and location is excellent. Eating both inside and al-fresco. All in all we had a fantastic stay at Lagbuie. Catriona is very responsive and helpful. We would definitely stay again and would highly recommend it to anyone thinking of booking.

Go walking, bird-watching, mountain-biking, cycling, kayaking or fishing during the day then relax on the decking in the evenings. With plenty of attractions nearby you can enjoy the best of Sutherland and the North Coast 500 from this quiet, but well connected, location. • We travelled as a family of three. (Mum, dad and a four year old). The size of the accommodation was perfect for us. The cottage is proportioned

    Mehul2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • Joyce and Angus were wonderful hosts and greeted us on arrival (late in the evening) and had even prepared some fresh bread for us. Their lovely cottage looks out over the lake and is just a short drive to Tain and Dornoch. There are plenty of walks and countryside around which is accessible on foot. The accommodation itself was spotless and we made good use of the log-burning fire. Perfect for a peaceful retreat! We will hopefully be returning soon and will recommend to family and friends.

    Fraser2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • Joyce and Angus' place is just wonderful. The setting is idyllic and so peaceful. I came with my partner and we walked and took in the stunning scenery and we rested in the lovely cottage with a gorgeous woodburner. The magnificent Chestnut tree really looked after us during our stay and we want to come back to see it in all its glory! Joyce welcomed us with such kindness - what a fab stay- thank you!

    Carolyn2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • Joyce & Angus are fab host! They guided us with the route and Gus went extra mile looking out for us while Joyce guided on phone since I forgot to adhere to the instructions and trusted the sat-nav :-( Joyce welcomed us with home baked fresh bread and made us feel at home. Cottage has beautiful view of the Loch Migdale which is a treat while sipping morning tea. Overall very good experience ! Thanks for your hospitality 🙏🏼

    Chloé2019-10-17T00:00:00Z
  • We can highly recommend the cottage and the host. It was a lovely place to just relax and go for some walks, because the nature around is very nice as well. Thanks for the good bread and warm welcome.

    Eleonor2019-10-09T00:00:00Z
  • Joyce and Angus are wonderfull and very friendly hosts. They have a lovely cottage in the most beautiful area. The view every morning over the loch was stunning and amazing. The hikes we did were beautiful and we enjoyed them very much. We were traveling by public transport and that's very doable in this area with the train station and busstops close by. The village is a gorgeous 35 minute walk which we didn't mind at all. The cottage was very clean and tidy and had everything we needed. We felt very much at home, especially with the cosy wood stove. We recommend this place to anyone who wants to experience the Scottish highlands to the fullest!

Traditional Highland cottage, small but comfortable and perfect for two people. Set in over an acre of garden with outstanding views of fields, hills and Migdale Loch. Blissfully peaceful rural location but with easy access to local amenities in Bonar Bridge. Larger shops and restaurants can be found in Dornoch and Tain approximately 30 mins drive. A great base to explore the local area and with easy access to the West or North. Perfect for those seeking a quiet, homely place to stay.
Our cottage may be small but is perfect for 2 people as we lived there until fairly recently. If you're looking to escape to somewhere cosy and quiet with beautiful views then this is the place for you. On clear nights the sunsets are amazing and the dark skies are stunning. We look forward to welcoming you to our wee slice of Highland bliss.
There are plenty of places to eat within 20-30 minutes drive but our favourite has to be The Pier at Lairg. If walking is your favourite pastime then there are woodland walks in the local Woodland Trust area in Ledmore and Migdale Woods or at Bonar Bridge. Wonderful beaches at Dornoch and Embo and a bit further afield at Portmahomack. The Falls of Shin and the waterfalls at Glen Cassley, Rosehall are also well worth a visit.
  • 4th visit to this beautiful cottage. Amazing value and the hosts are truly lovely people

  • Second visit to this beautiful little cottage with its huge garden and sprawling views. Used it as a base for exploring the hills around Golspie, Helmsdale and Kinbrace. Booked for 2 nights and ended up staying 3........again!!! Peaceful, functional and cosy. Cannot fault it and hope to return very soon.

    Chris2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • Reg and Sally's cottage is very clean and tidy and they are very generous and hospitable . We had everything that we needed to make our 1 week stay very comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked and fitted out which made cooking and eating at the cottage very easy. The bed was very comfortable and warm which was great as a few of the days were cold and rainy. The location is very peaceful and picturesque and only a few minutes drive into Bonar Bridge village. We found our stay at the cottage a very relaxing end to our trip around Scotland.

The Waiting Room is a great getaway- somewhere to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the Highlands. It's a self-contained studio apartment in a rural railway station, adjacent to the main Station House. Jump on the train (eight per day, between 8.30am and 8.30pm) for a trip to Dunrobin Castle, Glenmorangie Distillery, the peatlands of the Flow Country and the northern towns of Wick and Thurso in Caithness, gateway to Orkney. Or explore the mountains, lochs and west coast of Sutherland by car.
The light breakfast includes fruit juice, cereal, toast/croissant, fruit and yoghurt, with eggs available on request. A well-stocked shop and pub/restaurant are just 100 metres away. The apartment is well-equipped with self-catering facilities if you just want to stay in and unwind with one of the many films available on DVD. The price stays the same throughout the year, but a discount is available for stays of a week or more.
Rogart is a small crofting communuity 6km from the coast. It has a shop and a pub/restaurant.
  • We had a very good time in this cosy little apartment. It is well situated to explore the area and has everything one need (including board games and dvds to relax on a rainy evening). Kate was a great host, reactive and attentionate to us. We especially appreciated the breakfasts. We recommend and would gladly come back !

  • We really adored our stay and we strongly recommend this place ; they are both adorable and her husband speaks a wonderful French! we enjoyed watching the trains from our bedroom; there are only 4' trains a day and as they are very silent and at times which are during the day, we were not all disturbed; un grand merci !

    Philippe2019-08-15T00:00:00Z
  • great atmosphere, quaint, peaceful, relaxing. only complaint it would have been better if Kate could arrange for more trains to pass through this charming station during our stay. will definitely be back

  • What a wonderful few days. A fun, quirky way to experience the Highlands. The studio was comfortable, clean, exactly as described and the service was spot on. We would definitely visit again.

    Karen2019-08-01T00:00:00Z
  • The Waiting Room was a fantastically quirky stay, and after a good night of sleep the clean shower and ample breakfast/ coffee facilities meant I got to start the day just right. Great DVD collection, I might add. Thanks Kate, it was perfect.

    Alex2019-06-23T00:00:00Z
  • Kate's place at the Rogart Station was so much fun. The studio is well thought out and has everything you need. The heat is cozy warm and Kate left food which was thoughtful after a long drive. It is in a peaceful village which is nice for walking. The few trains that went by (only during waking hours, don't worry!) made it even better.

  • A beautiful cozy cottage, everything you need for a relaxing stay. There are beautiful views and it’s a lovely quiet location. We took our dogs and it was great to be able to let them out into the secure space at the back of the cottage. There is a fully equipped kitchen, and a cozy lounge area with plenty of seating and log burner. There is a bedroom downstairs with two single beds and mezzanine bedroom with a double bed. The bathroom has a shower over bath (good water pressure) and underfloor heating which keeps it nice and cosy. Everywhere is freshly decorated, light and bright. Charlotte and Richard are great hosts, very helpful and friendly, they are available if you need them during your stay whilst respecting your privacy. I thoroughly recommend this lovely cottage to anyone thinking of visiting the area.

  • We stayed here when Storm Ciara was causing havoc, we were up visiting family so know the area. We decided to try to stay in an Airbnb rather than put out elderly parents. Springfield was perfect. Check-in was easy and we were in communication all journey as the weather was delaying us. The accommodation was very spacious and we loved the double-height open-plan kitchen/lounge with a much needed log-burner. Parking was never an issue due to 2 allocated spaces directly outside of the cottage. We would highly recommend the cottage and look forward to returning ourselves in the future.

  • Perfect location, secluded yet still really close to Dornoch and Tain by car. Excellent communication and easy to find using the Google maps coordinates. Private garden area available ar rear which was great for the dog. A lovely relaxing 2 days.

  • This is a clean, cosy and comfortable place in a rural setting off the A9 north of Dornoch. Charlotte & Richard are good communicators providing lots of information. Recommended

  • We had an absolutely amazing weekend staying at Charlotte and Richard's cottage. The cottage was absolutely perfect and had everything we needed - Charlotte was really thoughtful and included a travel cot, highchair and nappy bags as she knew we had young children. The location is also perfect - close to the A9 so that it only takes minutes to get to the lovely beaches of Dornoch but also completely calm and secluded. Our 2 year old son absolutely loved the cows in the field opposite the house. The area also has some fantastic wood walks and Charlotte and Richard provided excellent leaflets about what was available. We highly recommend both the cottage and the area for a great weekend away.

  • A brilliant location for going out to explore what the Highlands has to offer. The accommodation is brilliant. Comfortable sofa, really comfortable beds a power shower and a well equipped kitchen provided more than enough for the duration of our stay. You can tell that Jan and Garry have taken time to make the property feel really welcoming and feel like a home from home. If you're knackered from all the walking you may end up doing during the day, there is a smart TV and DVD player if you want to relax in the evening. The Lairg area is pretty easy to get to, being just over an hour's drive outside of Inverness and the Lairg area is very peaceful being on the banks of Loch Shin ( I think). There's a local Spar shop, a fish and chip shop and the Pier cafe/restaurant all about a minutes walk away. (You can find ducks behind the pier that are quite friendly) You are able to drive in any direction and find a beautiful beach, or a brilliant forest walk to keep yourself entertained and it's a brilliant place to base yourself if you have numerous day trips planned. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this as a place to stay. Communication was first class from both Jan and Garry and we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay.

  • Rose Cottage is a lovely cottage, spacious and nicely furnished. The garden was a lovely place to sit and soak up the Autumn sun. Culrain is tucked out of the way but only a 5-10 minute drive from shops at Ardgay and Bonar Bridge. We had a very restful holiday there and Maggie, the owner, was very helpful when we needed it.
