Guesthouse in Bywater

4.96 out of 5 average rating, 381 reviews

Bask in the Tranquil Courtyard of Bywater Guest House

Enjoy morning coffee on the leafy garden patio of this vibrant, Creole-style cottage nestled on a shady corner lot. Prep a meal within the funky-modern confines of the kitchen or wander the colorful interiors until you find a sunny spot on the couch. If you prefer to sleep in while on vacation, feel free to close all the wooden shutters to form a comfortable, dark cocoon in the bedroom and pretend like the rest of the world has stopped while you relax. When you are ready to get out and about, venture outside to explore the unique architecture of the Bywater and visit local dives and hangouts! This guest house is a creole-style cottage adjacent to a traditional shotgun (occupied by the host) on a shady corner lot in the Bywater Historic District. Originally built in the 1800s, renovated in 2007, and completely refreshed in 2017, guests will enjoy full, private access to this 600+ square foot, 1 bedroom, 1 bath cottage with a fully appointed kitchen. There is a queen bed in the bedroom plus a West Elm modular couch in the living room that comfortably sleeps one adult. Extra linens and pillows are provided. Flat-screen TV with DirecTV and DVD player. Washer/dryer in unit with supplies. Freshly-squeezed grapefruit and satsuma juice from trees in the courtyard, when in season (October - February)! Guests may feel welcome to sit in the courtyard, with a private patio just outside the living room door. We live on-site, and the door to our home is just across the courtyard from the living room or at the deck by your entry door. Should you need anything, we’re happy to be at your service. Otherwise, we'll leave you to the quiet enjoyment of the space and to enjoy your travels. The guest house is situated in the Bywater Historic District, a Creole neighborhood mostly known for its brightly colored architecture and creative community members. The neighborhood boasts easy access to dining and entertainment, and a number of hotspots are nearby including one of the city’s best brunches, a nano-brewery, and a wine bar with live courtyard jazz multiple times a day! The Crescent Park trail along the river is two blocks away and is a nice gateway to the French Quarter. The Crescent Park trail along the Mississippi Riverfront is two blocks from the house and offers easy bike/pedestrian/wheelchair access to the French Market (about 1.5 miles) along with the rest of the French Quarter beyond (Jackson Square is about 2 miles from the house). Multiple bus routes are within 2-4 blocks of the house, including Bus Route 5 two blocks away that takes you to the Quarter. The Rampart-St. Claude Streetcar Route is approximately 1.6 miles away at the intersection of St. Claude and Elysian Fields. Several local businesses offer scooter and bike rentals within a couple miles of the house, and a bike share station (Blue Bikes NOLA) is located around the corner. Uber/Lyft/rideshares are readily available, typically in 5 minutes or less at most times of day, and cost around $7-$12 to the French Quarter/CBD (or Central Business District as we in New Orleans call our downtown), depending upon traffic, time of day, exact dropoff location, etc. If you are driving your own vehicle, apps like "Spothero" will help you find and compare options for private or paid parking lots and spaces at your destination. On-street parking is typically pretty easy to find and no permit is required/no time restrictions exist. J&J's Sports Bar is across the street. While it can be great for watching a game close-by or for a night cap before you hit the sack, depending upon the day, it can also create conversation noise into the wee hours. A white noise machine is provided in the bedroom, in case of sensitive sleepers. City of New Orleans Short-Term License Number/Type/Expiration: 17STR-16097/Accessory STR/16 August 2018

Your guide to New Orleans

All About New Orleans

Enveloping the undulating Mississippi River in southeastern Louisiana, New Orleans is one of the United States’ liveliest and most distinctive cities, best known for its ubiquitous jazz music, Creole and Cajun food, and larger-than-life festivals, especially Mardi Gras.

The city has fostered a swirl of cultures — French, African, Native, Spanish, Southern — since its founding in 1718, and New Orleans’ cuisines, architecture, and entertainment are as diverse as the city itself. You don’t have to go far to find musicians spilling onto the street, a packed theatre, or the brassy tones of trumpets filling the air. New Orleans’ distinctive food is an equally big draw, from sugar-coated beignets and chicory coffee to gumbo, po-boys, and jambalaya.

You can explore streets draped in Spanish moss by hopping aboard one of the city’s iconic streetcars or cruising up the Mississippi River on a paddleboat. Head to the French Quarter for its balcony-wrapped buildings and near-constant festive air, or soak up the relaxed, near-subtropical vibe of the pretty Garden District, home to historic mansions and quiet, shady streets.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in New Orleans

The most popular time to book vacation homes in New Orleans is typically the spring, when the weather is mild and rainfall is at its lowest. This is when the city hosts many of its events and festivals, including Mardi Gras — which essentially runs from January to March — and the country’s best-known jazz festival in April. Summer in New Orleans can get very hot and humid, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. However, if you don’t mind the humidity, this can be a quieter time to take in the city’s attractions.

Fall brings cooler, drier weather conditions, making this an ideal time to wander along the streets and exploring the surrounding cities and natural attractions. Winter is characterized by atmospheric Christmas lights and festive culinary traditions like Réveillon dinners — a twist on a traditional French feast, served on Christmas Eve. Though it gets cold at night here, it rarely snows, and if you’ve layered up, you can still enjoy the outdoors.

Top things to do in New Orleans

New Orleans Jazz Museum

Learn why New Orleans is the home of jazz at this lively interactive museum set in the historic former Mint building. The museum contains more than 25,000 artifacts, including instruments belonging to famous musicians, sheet music, and photographs. All-ages musical concerts are hosted here almost every night of the year, and the museum includes a performance centre where musicians can come to record and broadcast.

Woldenberg Park

A popular spot to walk, cycle, or simply watch ships sail along the Mississippi River, Woldenberg Park is located at the water’s edge, close to the heart of the French Quarter. Paved walkways wind through the green landscape, passing many public art installations. You’ll often find street performers and musicians showcasing their talents in the park’s outdoor amphitheatre.

French Quarter

The action-packed, energetic heart of the city, the French Quarter is where New Orleans’ dining and nightlife come alive. It’s also the oldest part of the city — the entire district is a National Historic Landmark — fusing historic architecture with hip bars and galleries. Wander along Bourbon Street to find jazz clubs, storied cocktail bars, and some of the city’s best Creole cuisine.
