Your guide to Prince Edward

All About Prince Edward

Prince Edward County is an island in Lake Ontario, about two hours east of Toronto. Not to be confused with the maritime province of the same name, Prince Edward County (or “the county,” as locals call it) has nine regions. The largest is Picton, known for its architecture and lively Main Street with restaurants, antique stores, and art galleries. The small towns of Ameliasburgh and Sophiasburgh benefit from the surrounding farmlands and gorgeous bay views while Sandbanks is home to stunning Provincial Park with the world’s largest baymouth barrier dune formation and three sandy beaches.

Prince Edward County is one of the fastest growing wine regions in Ontario, boasting more than three dozen wineries known for outstanding chardonnay and pinot noir. The area’s microclimates and mineral-rich soil draws comparisons to the wine-growing powerhouse of France’s Burgundy. The same factors also allow the county to excel in food, dubbed by many the Gastronomic Capital of Ontario. Many fine restaurants dot Prince Edward with seasonal menus that celebrate local produce from the area’s farms and gardens.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Prince Edward

Prince Edward County is a year-round destination with many cottage and house rentals available. Spring is a lovely time to visit with blooming flowers and maple syrup harvesting. In April, a festival brings renowned authors and speakers to town to celebrate the county’s love of literature. Summer offers warm sunny days for enjoying the local beaches, and you can sample delicious produce from nearby farms and gardens at the many restaurants, vineyards, and markets. In fall, the temperatures are cooler, but with it comes beautiful changing colours. Many events occur at this time of year, including the popular pumpkin festival in October. In winter, the snow-covered hills and ice lakeshores will greet you, so bring your snowshoes, along with a warm jacket and hat.

Top things to do in Prince Edward

Sandbanks Provincial Park

This park offers views of Lake Ontario, beautiful swimming beaches, and several hiking trails. The Dunes Walk loop is an easy 2.4-kilometre trail that takes you by the lake and through sand dunes offering picturesque vistas along the way. For a more challenging hike, the 12.7-kilometre Woodlands Trail weaves through meadows, woodlands, and the beachfront. You’ll find three beaches in the park, including Outlet Beach and Sandbanks Beach, with sandy shores and safe swimming. For something quieter, head to the more secluded Dune Beach.

Lake on Mountain

The mysterious Lake on Mountain sits nearly 60 metres above the Lake of Ontario, and appears to have no water source. The lake enjoys flowing freshwater, but geologists can’t explain where it comes from. Regardless of its curious nature, it’s a great place to spend a few hours frolicking in the clear, glistening water. The vistas over Lake Ontario alone are worth the visit.

Cycling Millennium Trail

This 50-kilometer public trail runs along an abandoned railway line that once cut through the region. It weaves through numerous towns, from Picton to the picturesque Wellington and Bloomfield, with many places to stop for a coffee or lunch. The trail also takes you through gorgeous farmlands.
