Places to stay in San Carlos
We are a young couple and we offer a shared space in our house. It is built mainly of wood, we have spaces for your rest, a garden designed to attract birds. Coffee available 24 hours a day and books for naturalists. We are located in the center of the Caño Negro Community, adjacent to the Caño Negro Mixed Wildlife Refuge and near several sites to visit.
We have a private room, with a queen size bed, areas such as kitchen, bathroom, laundry and living room are shared.
There are several places to visit and spend pleasant moments. The climate is humid and warm. In the community and surroundings there are many places to walk, to observe wildlife and beautiful landscapes.
  • Really a beautiful place. Renato and Tati are incredibly friendly and show how they and the locals live. They offer great tours. The cocoa tour is unique and can only be recommended. This is real ecotourism.

  • We had a great time, Tatianna is a person who likes to share, discuss. A real pleasure, we learned a lot about the country, the fauna ... Very beautiful stage of our trip !!!

  • The accommodation at Renato was exactly as expected due to the description. Cano Negro is far from mass tourism and a fantastic place for a great nature experience. The room in Renato's house is simple and frugal. But that's what you expect in Cano Negro. Renato is a very accommodating host who invited us for coffee, gallo pinto and pineapple juice. He is also a great guide and knows all about the place as well as the flora and fauna! We recommend!

    Wiebke2019-04-28T00:00:00Z
  • A warm and authentic stay in a wonderful place. Simple lodging without much privacy reflects local life in Caño Negro. Renato was a perfect host who knows and loves his place, I learned a lot and immediately felt like I was with friends. "Caño negro experience" is also highly recommended as a tour operator! I would come back immediately!

    Maya2019-04-17T00:00:00Z
  • Renato's home is a typical 'Tico' home having an unlined roof creating a hot environment at certain times of the day. This may not suit everyone. The fan in the bedroom was appreciated. There is a seperate sitting area at the front of the house which is comfortable and allows one to watch birds. Kitchen is clean with a good range of cooking utensils. It is a small intimate home - we only met Renato as Tatiana was away at the time. Renato is extremely welcoming, with an easy outgoing friendly disposition. He is knowledgeable and passionate about the Cano Nego environment and helpful, and gave us free reign of the home. If you want to spend time with an educated knowledgeable environmentalist who speaks fluent English, this is the place for you. As budget conscious nature watchers, this home was excellent.

  • Renato and Tatiana made us feel very welcome. We felt totally at ease in their home. They are genuine friendly people who are passionate about the environment and wildlife. They took us for a walk through the wetlands. They are amazing at finding and identifying birds and other wildlife. They are very knowledgeable and wetland specialists. This is more than a place to stay. They can offer tours and will make sure you make the most of your stay. The room and house are exactly as described. The bed is comfortable. Their dog is very sweet. They gave us an oatmeal drink when we arrived. Their friends came over and shared their delicious Caribbean chicken dish. They let us taste soursop and made a soursop smoothie. They were enthusiastic and we had many interesting conversations. They speak English well. Highly recommended. Even if you are not staying at their place I recommend contacting them if you are looking for a tour or a guide or you want to go birding. Cano Negro is amazing. Very scenic and one of the best birding areas in the country. We are not birders but loved the roseate spoonbills, jabirus, kingfishers, herons and countless other birds as well as the monkeys and caimans.

Our cabin sits by the lagoon, diagonal to the sports field. There are no neighbors for 100m around. It is a very private & quiet location yet just steps from the center of town. The few sounds heard are singing birds, farm animals & music from the evangelical church nearby & the Danube Bar across the lagoon, close enough to hear yet far enough that it is still quiet. Sit under the awning while it rains or under the endless sky when it is clear & witness a million stars on a moonless night..
At "Cabin by the Lagoon" you may get the feeling that you are a part of the nature. During the rainy season the wetlands may be just meters away from the porch & during the dry season this same area, now grasslands, may meet the Rio Frio. Both ways, local & migratory birds make their homes in this reserve, preying on fish & insects or even feeding off the horses & cows grazing in front. You may wish to write a book, meditate on the sounds or just paddle away in one of the kayaks we keep for our guests. Welcome to another way of being...You will have use of all the cabin & property. The land is over an acre & includes many meters of lagoon / wetlands reserve frontage. There is a fire pit, kayaks, canoes & plenty of room to stretch out among the trees. If you are coming by bus I can pick you up in Los Chiles for an additional fee.
We are the only cabin right on the lagoon right in the town.. This is a private cabin with no neighbors for 100m in any direction. It us all at within a 3 minute walk.. The best of all worlds...

  • If you are a nature-lover and like it a little off the beaten track, then this is the right place to go. We had a great stay at the Caño Negro Wetlands Lodge. Within only two minutes you are right at caño negro with lots of beautiful birds, reptiles like the basiliscus plumifrons, and of course caimans. Alvaro and Ilyana are great and warm hosts and are always attentive to your requests and wishes and the breakfast and dinner was one of the best (if not the best!!) we had during our travel!! Alvaro will help you with any kind of activity you would like to undertake. We went on a little boat trip and saw plenty of wildlife and really enjoyed it! The cabins are clean and equipped with everything we needed and the hammock on your porch invites you to relax and watch the humming birds and eagles fly by. We really enjoyed our time there and would like to once again say THANK YOU SOO MUCH Alvaro and Ilyana!

  • We spent an excellent moment there. He offered us to use his kayac for free which we found so cool ! Very good breakfast ! Thank you !

    Marine2018-12-11T00:00:00Z
  • We spent three great nights here in late October. Alvaro arranged a river tour for us. His lodge is on lovely grounds right next to the lagoon. The individual cabins are spaced nicely apart, but close to the main lodge for meals and relaxing. The breakfasts were good, lots of fresh fruit, coffee and a protein, egg and starch. The resident dog will romp around the grounds with you especially if you go out for night walks around the grounds. The pool was drained for painting so we didn't get a chance to use it. While the kitchen really isn't available for individual use, we were able to fix a lunch for us during our stay.

Hotel de Campo, is the only hotel just in front of the lagoon of the Refuge of Caño Negro. It is a paradise for nature lovers and especially for bird watcher, who like to see the amazing variety of the birds here in Caño Negro. Our beautiful Hotel is based in middle of a Refuge, which is considered to be one of the most important wetlands in the world. If you are looking for a wonderful natural experience which you will never forget, we are more than grateful to host you.
We have 17 comfortable rooms with queen size beds, private bathrooms, hot water, fans, air conditioner and safes. The rooms and our swimming pool are located in a spacious green area in the shade of tropical fruit trees and flowers. After more than 20 years of growing, our botanical garden gives many birds a shelter and you can enjoy your time at the pool while you can watch them, flying around or sitting on one of our trees. On the other side of the property (across the street) you will find a little forest, which offers a home for frogs like the blue jeans and red eyed tree frog, sloths, different kinds of monkeys and much more. We have a Restaurant with local and Italian cuisine. The majority of the products served in the restaurant are produced or has been grown in the Hotel.
Our Hotel is in front of a beautiful lagoon and ‘Rio Frio’ in the National Refuge of Caño Negro. The 25,000-acre refuge is considered to be one of the most important wetlands in the world. It is also one of the most biologically diverse wetland areas in Costa Rica, which is a popular destination for nature lovers and travelers and has a huge variety of birds like parrots, trogons, birds of prey, colorful Tanager and Flycatcher, migratory birds like spoonbills, ibis, storks and cormorants and so on. But because of the forests, grasslands and marshes we have also other wildlife in this area such as endangered species like cougars, jaguars and three species of monkeys (spider monkey, mantled howler and the white-headed capuchin). Caimans, iguanas, turtles, crocodiles and much more can be seen here as well.

The "town" is just 200m from my property & boasts a coffee shop, a police station, the local bar, a church, the health center & a grammer school. Most wetlands tours begin at the dock some 250m walk from here. It's a pleasant & welcoming pueblo where horse, canoe & boat transport is more commonly used than vehicles...
  • Outstanding hospitality Many thank Diane. Looking forward to come again.

  • The best black spout place! , the cozy cabin and in an amazing location, recommended

    Tatiana2019-11-17T00:00:00Z
  • What a magical place this is!  Just steps to the water edge, surrounded by nature.. Totally private yet just a 4 minute walk to the center of the pueblo.. We saw monkeys right from the cabin...  And so many birds also.. Maybe 20 species up close... Diane made us feel right at home with delicious coffee & fruit smoothies. We told her what we wanted & she found the perfect guide & tour for us.  She knows  the entire country better than anyone I've ever met including travel agents.  She is now our "go to" person for our next trip in Costa Rica.   Highly recommended for laid back people who looking for an authentic experience in nature. There's no a/c nor hot water, just screens, fans, good mattress & loads of peace & quiet. There is also a lovely coffee bar outside (made from a snow board!) where we sat for practically hours just communing with the nature... The best experience you can live in Caño Negro!

  • We enjoyed staying at Casa Blanca. Eduardo was great and was quick to respond any questions or concerns. They where very accommodating. The only issue we had was that some of the rooms in the back did not have fully working toilets ( but there where plenty of working bathrooms for our group of 8) Other than that great location for the price and close to everything San Juan has to offer. We had a great time and look forward to visiting again. Tip: bring your own towels and floaties!

  • The house is much better than the photos show. My family, my friends and I stayed, but we loved it. The rooms, the bathrooms, the kitchen, the pool all very well maintained and make you feel at home. It is close to climb the Christ of mercy. A little long drive distance from downtown, but on foot you go along the beach and it is more accessible. I highly recommend her

  • Good location and nice place to stay if you're in town.

  • The location of the house is great! 1 block to the beach, it has a mini supermarket almost in front of the property. Jairo, the housekeeper was extremely kind, always willing to help. Another great thing about the location is that the house is next to the main road, and you dont need a 4x4 to get there. The road connects San Juan and other great beaches to visit. Really recommend this place!
