Mosque
“Established in 859, the Kairaouine is the spiritual heart of Fez, and, arguably, all Morocco. It is also considered the world's oldest university, though it began as a simple medersa, funded by Fatima Al Fihria, a member of an elite family who emigrated from the Tunisian city of Kairouan. Expanded over the centuries, the Kairaouine is now very large, with a capacity of 20,000. This is hard to grasp on the ground, though, as shops and houses encircle it, disguising its true shape.”

School
“The Medersa Bou 'Inania is a madrassah built in Fez, Morocco, between 1350 and 1355 for the sultan Abu' Inan Faris (r 1348 - 59), or under the Merinid dynasty. It is the only Madrassah in the city with that of the Seffarin to have a minaret, and it also adjoining shops for its financing, as well as large latrines, which testify to its public character. Indeed, the madrassah functioned as well as a school as a Friday mosque. This madrassah is open to non-Muslims, like most Medieval madrasas in Morocco, such as its namesake Meknes, or the medersa Ben Youssef in Marrakech, or those Al 'Attarin or As Saffarin of Fez.”

“This Madrasa was located near the Al-Quaraouiyine Mosque and the Al-Attarine Souk, a market with a variety of local spices, dried nuts, fruit and much more. Al-Attarine was an annex to Al-Quaraouiyine and is made with the same design, with beautiful green and blue zellij tilework, carved plaster and cedar wood, plus classrooms indoors and a fountain in the courtyard.”
