Your guide to Playa del Carmen

All About Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen has long been a destination for vacation-goers due to its palm tree-lined white sandy beaches, lush nature, and historic Mayan ruins just down the road in Xel-Há and Tulum. Located along the Riviera Maya in the Yucatan Peninsula area of Mexico, the beach town doubles as a base to explore nearby Xcacel and Xelhá, day trips where you can discover the region’s famous sinkholes, or Tulum, with its famous seaside Mayan ruins.

At Playa del Carmen, you can spend your days exploring archeological sites and natural wonders, your nights in the city’s clubs and restaurants, and your time in between simply relaxing in the sand.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Playa del Carmen

Just about any month is a good time to enjoy vacation rentals in Playa del Carmen. The weather stays warm for most of the year, though you can expect more rainfall between the months of June and November. Also note that the peak of tropical storm and hurricane season is from August through October, so if you’re planning a trip during those months be sure to pay special attention to local weather advisories. Winter is ideal for those travelling from the Northern Hemisphere looking to escape the cold, since this time sees less rain in addition to less intense heat.

Top things to do in Playa del Carmen

Tulum Archeological Zone

Drive just under an hour from Playa del Carmen to get a glimpse into what Mayan life was like in the ancient port city of Tulum. Along the way you can stop for a swim in a cenote, or sinkhole, to cool down before continuing along the coastal road. Bring a hat, water, and sunscreen since you’ll be out in the sun most of the time here. The area also boasts beautiful beaches, some of which are protected as nesting areas for sea turtles.

Río Secreto and Cenote Chaak Tun

Río Secreto is part of an underwater river system where you’ll be able to snorkel in some of the unique geological wonders like underwater lakes and caves. Cenote Chaak Tun offers a hike through a cavern where you will see its iconic stalactite and stalagmites. Both natural wonders are just 20 minutes from Playa del Carmen.

Chikin Ha

A 30-minute drive from Playa del Carmen, this swimming spot doubles as a fascinating example of the local geography and culture. It offers rock climbing, biking, and sea-cave dives, as well as a chance to experience the ancient Temazcal steam bath ritual, a tradition passed down from the Mayans that focuses on sweating out toxins from the body while inside a steam filled cave-like structure.
