Places to stay in Strokestown
Our cabin is warm and cosy. Enjoy the space, help yourself to veg from the garden, feed the farm animals, collect the eggs and explore all our area has to offer
We are in the heart of the countryside but within walking distance of the town. The cabin is accessed via a raised walkway over the vegetable garden and nestled neatly under mature beech trees. The cabin is on our small farm which you are free to explore, experience and enjoy. The area is a slightly off the beaten track hidden gem. You could use your time here to explore Lough Key Forest Park, the town of Boyle, Boyle Abbey, King House and Drummanone Dolmen. You could visit the majestic Carrowkeel passage tombs and delve into the caves of Keash. Try walking around some of the lesser known lakes and woodlands e.g. Clontykilla woods and cycling a myriad of country lanes. See if you can catch some fish on the nearby Boyle river or Lough Gara. Spend your evenings snuggled in the cabin with some local literature or head to Boyle for something to eat and a few pints. For those wanting very lively nightlife Carrick on Shannon is 12 km away
This is an area with hidden gems waiting to be discovered. We love our interactions with the animals, the peaceful lakes, rivers and hills and our friends and neighbours. A quiet pint in town with a good meal and chat is a simple pleasure. A rich historical tapestry from passage tombs to hidden abbeys to grand mansions continues to stimulate.
  • This was my second time at the Hideaway - the welcome was even warmer this time and I had a great stay. John's recommendations for the area (including the Caves at Keash and the Carrowkeel passage tombs) were spot on. Highly recommended!

  • Right on the farm, also very private! Everything lovely and clean and only a few minutes away from the town, would recommend!

  • John and his family made us feel very welcome in their beautiful pod. He took time to explain all of the local points of interest and made sure we were comfortable. The pod is cosy, well furnished and in a lovely location. Definitely recommend!

  • Don’t let the size fool you, you’ll have EVERYTHING you need at the hideaway! This was the first Airbnb that I personally felt as comfortable as I do at home. Boyle had the best food in Ireland and it was the most affordable as well. If you want a host that has a well planned out selection of things to do, this is where your heart will be!

  • Spent a nice Valentine's weekeend in this cozy cabin during storm Dennis. Great place, great host, and completely warm! Also, since we didn't have a car the hosts came to pick up and drop us at the train station. Thanks John!

  • Really enjoyed the location, the reception and the cabin. I'll recommend the experience to anyone and everyone..

  • John's accommodation loved it. The indications to the place were very precise. The cabin is very cozy and John and his family are very hospitable. Everything was spotless and they even left us some homemade snacks. 100% recommendable.

Our cosy 150 year old stone cottage in the heart of Roscommon is the perfect base for exploring the countryside, or just retreating into the tranquility in the stunning natural surroundings of our farm. As cosy in winter as it is cool in summer, our old cottage sits nestled in the middle of our farm. With stunning views across Finlough lake, this charming cottage has had much needed TLC over the last decade that sees it ready for those looking to escape city living for a weekend or even if you're ready to disappear into the countryside for a month. We have flexible rates that will accomodate whatever time period you choose. The cottage can sleep up to five people, with storage heaters complemented by a superb solid fuel stove, and open fires. Reclaimed pitch pine floors and stone tiles along with a beautiful solid oak kitchen make this a lovely space to spend time in. Read, write, relax and unwind and let the countryside wind you down in our herd house. Guests have full access to our rambling property, including use of the lake jetty on a well stocked coarse fishing lake. Guests will have the cottage to themselves, but may choose to walk around the farm grounds where cattle and sheep are farmed. As it is a working farm there is no pets allowed. Strokestown is a small but vibrant community, full of local charm, and with many popular festivals that take place in the vicinity, such as the Roscommon Lamb Festival, Percy French Festival and O'Carolan Harp Festival - and if you just want to escape the hustle and bustle some of the finest walks and rambles in the mid-west are located within a few minutes of the farm. Bus from Dublin/Sligo/Westport comes to Strokestown, and trains from east and west stop at Roscommon (15 minute taxi) or Carrick on Shannon (40 minute taxi) so all parts of the countryside are accessible with a bit of planning. Guests can enjoy various walks and explore the local countryside.

  • We had a lovely stay at Lynda and Noel’s cottage. The place is just the perfect size and it has everything you need, bed is comfortable and plenty of sticks for the stove. We really weren’t in need of anything at all during our stay, the space was private as you are really secluded from everything and functional as we were working from home. Plenty of 4G and a lovely kitchen table to work from where you can open the door and let the lovely breeze in. We can’t fault anything and value for money is fantastic. We thank you again Lynda and Noel for everything!

  • Great communication and an amazing place! Hope to visit again!

  • Perfect spot for a weekend getaway. Wonderful location and easy to get to. Hosts were very pleasant to deal with and the stove was lit upon arrival. Will definitely be back again! Thanks guys!

    Steven2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • This cottage is absolutely beautiful. Noel had the fire lit for us when we arrived and a basket of logs and firefighters for us to keep it going. The view of the lake from the house is stunning. I highly recommend a stay here, we had a wonderful break and hope to be back again.

  • great hosts and a beautiful house out in the country side. highly recommend it

    Niko2019-11-17T00:00:00Z
  • The Herd House is a magical place. Out in the country, it can get almost perfectly silent, other than an occasional cow chiming in. On a clear night, the stars can't be beat. Truly spectacular. During the colder days of our stay, we had to build a fire to heat up the house. While it took a couple tries for us to master, it ended up being one of our favorite parts of the experience. Clean, spacious, and a perfect place to slow down. We loved every minute at this place. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a rural Irish getaway.

    Grace2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • The house is outstanding and Noel very kind. It is located in middle of nowhere in front of a lake and if you want to spend a good and confortable stay it is a perfect house. For a family it is just perfect and well located : not so far from Sligo and Connemara. We keep the address for a future trip in Ireland

    Jonathan2019-10-28T00:00:00Z
  • A very nice house in a lovely location. We'd have liked more time to relax there but we had a busy weekend. In particular it would have been nice to light the wood-burner and spend a warm evening in. The bed was particularly cosy and comfortable, which was great when getting to bed at 4 a.m! The local roads are quiet and nice for strolling. Would definitely return.

  • Travelled with a group of 8 friends and a toddler to Albertine Lodge and it was a perfect stay. The location was very easy to find. The size of the house comfortably fit all of us and had all the facilities we needed. It was freezing outside but the house was extremely well heated. The hosts were very quick at replying to queries we had over the whole weekend. They even accommodated early check in and late check out as it suited the needs of some of the guests. Highly recommend. Thanks again Francis and Fiona!

  • We went here for an extended family weekend - 6 adults and 4 little kids. It was such a lovely stay. The house is perfectly laid out. Fiona and Francis were so attentive and responsive. Great value, great location, great hosts. Can’t recommend it enough

  • Great house with everything you could need. A lovely break for a bunch of friends.

  • This is an amazing place to stay. My friends and I spent the weekend at Albertine Lodge, during Storm Ciera, and it couldnt have been more cosy and welcoming. Fiona and Francis made sure we were warm and the fire was well-stoked. It's a very beautiful, traditional home. The sort of place I've dreamed of all my life. I would recommend it highly.

  • We had a fabulous weekend get together with some friends here. Lovely house and areas, very nice owners and would (hope to) definitely come back.

    Sonia2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Gorgeous house, spotlessly clean and loads of room. We got mini bus into Carrick for one night and were given great recommendations for restaurant and local pubs. Would definitely recommend the house and the fantastic hosts who were more than helpful. Thanks for a lovely stay!!

    Gillian2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • The house is perfect. It is even bigger than we expected with loads of bedrooms and toilets, a very cosy sitting room, and a huge open kitchen/dining area. The location is really close to a few towns so you are near anything you might need. The best part about the experience was the hosts - they thought of absolutely everything (e.g. they had the fire on and kettle boiled for us when we arrived, they made books of suggestions for anything you could need), and were really easy to contact when needed. Overall, the cleanliness and attention to detail was on par with any hotel, but it was also a very cosy, homey space. Will definitely be back!

  • The Albertine Lodge was a beautiful home just 10 minutes away from the quaint town of Carrick-on-Shannon. We were a family of 7 so it provided everyone with their own rooms and plenty of room to hang out in as well. Lovely accommodations and very clean. Francis and Fiona left local goodies for us upon our arrival. Francis went above and beyond in providing us with suggestions of things to do in the area, as well as being readily available for any questions we had. We had an amazing time and only wish we could have stayed longer!

  • The Ardcarne Lodge was exactly what we were hoping for. Brian and his parents were great hosts, so quick at responses and helpfulness. The house has all the amenities we could need and our family of 6 found it very comfortable. We came during a time of great rainfall so some of our outdoor plans were canceled, but we did enjoy just spending quality time in the house cooking together and hanging out. Due to the corona virus and new travel bans, we had to amend our reservation and leave earlier than we had planned. This was a bummer, however, Brian was so kind to credit us back the difference. We did enjoy a slice of Ireland and couldn't have asked for a better place to stay for our first trip! Definitely will be back!

    Rebecca2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful cottages with lots of nice details, cozy beds and a great living / fireplace room! We felt very comfortable here and communication with the hosts worked really well. Would love to come back!

  • Amazing place. One of the best Airbnbs I've stayed in. Will stay here again if I'm ever back in the area. Thanks for the excellent hospitality.

    Ronan2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Brian and his family were amazing so accommodating and we enjoyed every minute. They introduced themselves and then left us to it. They had the quirkiest little cottage we've every seen we had such fun reading parts of the random books and taking in the beautiful scenery, rooms were fabulous and the whole place was so homely and comfortable. I would highly recommended Ardcadne Lodge. Me and the girls just loved every minute and we were genuinely disappointed to have to go the next day. We would definitely love to return again in the future.

    Tracy2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • It’s hard to imagine that all those glowing reviews are actually accurate, but the Ardcarne Lodge lived up to all of them when our family of 6 grownups and one almost 2-year-old spent 5 days there at the end of November. The house has everything you need, from ample non-IKEA dishes and at least 4 different ways to make coffee, to fluffy towels and excellent sheets and duvets. We instantly felt at home, due to Jim’s expert orientation and Bernie’s freshly baked scones and their very warm welcome, and the space worked perfectly for our group. You couldn’t ask for a nicer place to stay!

    Jane2019-12-03T00:00:00Z

  • Great stay here - hosts are extremely accommodating, friendly and helpful. I needed to check-in early due to illness and hosts did everything to accommodate me, both at the time and the following morning. Rooms are just above the bar and there's a separate entrance so no dramas getting in and out. Might want to bring earplugs if it's a room next to the main road, though it's not a busy road. I've stayed in two different rooms now (on two trips) and both were extremely clean, warm and very spacious. Location was perfect for me as I was working nearby. Excellent value for money, I will be staying here again!

  • My friends and I stayed in Gerry loft for a night. We had a really nice stay, only 5 minutes drive into Carrick on Shannon which was ideal for us. Gerry’s wife Elvira was very friendly and accommodating with the flexible check in times. The loft itself is cosy, there was plenty of room to sleep 4 of us. Would highly recommend to groups or couples traveling to the area.

  • Very cosy little apartment, and truly amazing hosts, kind and helpful, I got up that morning and the car had frozen over, hosts were heading out and gave me a hand de-icing the car.

  • The accommodation is really spacious clean and a great value. Gerry and Elvira are super friendly and present if you need. We went for a fishing trip and Gerry put us in touch with his friend Dave (fishing guide) who rented us the boat and took us to different spots. Thanks for everything

  • Celine`s house is located within five minutes walk of the town centre and has plenty of safe parking space. For such a central location it is amazingly quiet and you can be assured your sleep will not be interrupted by revellers. My room was cosy and the bed itself was excellent, really comfortable. Everything was spotlessly clean, breakfast was excellent and tea and coffee were available at anytime. Celine, who has earned "super host" status with AirBnB is friendly and welcoming, with a fund of information on local and national topics and great at directing guests to places of interest and giving guidance about restaurants and music venues. Any time I am in Carrick I hope there will be accommodation available for me in Celines house. Many thanks Celine, Séan McMenamin

Dempsey's is a beautifully restored cottage in the countryside of Roscommon at the foot of Sliabh Bán. It lies a few miles from the market town of Strokestown and the picturesque Shannonside villages of Tarmonbarry and Laensboro. Lovely area for country walks, hiking, fishing cycling and boating. Just 90 minutes from Dublin it’s ideal for a quiet country getaway far from the madding crowd. There’s Fully equipped kitchen or lovely award winning restaurants and bars just a short drive away.
You get full run of this beautiful cottage which has three large bedrooms two bathrooms large open plan living room/kitchen with large conservatory attached (great for morning coffee). There’s also a utility room, two large hallways and walk-in wardrobes in two of the bedrooms. There’s a large half acre garden around the house and a great space out back for lounging about in or perhaps dining out.
The cottage is situated on a quiet country road surrounded by farm and bog land. It’s a the foot of Sliabh Bán the local mountain which is a great place for walks that will give you an overview of the locality. From up there you will see how close you are to the Shannon river which meanders through the area from Lanesboro to Tarmonbarry both charming villages with award winning restaurants and bars. Check out The Purple Onion and Keenan’s of Tarmonbarry. One of my favorite bars in the world is just 4.5 miles from the cottage, it’s called Beirne’s bar in Strokestown. Tell Bridie I said hello. The Royal canal ends its journey close to Tarmonbarry in a wee village called Clondra, definitely worth a visit and you can stroll along the canal for miles and miles. There’s a beautiful woodland walk in the grounds of Strokestown house which also houses the Irish Famine History Museum. Overall it’s a lovely safe area for walking, cycling, fishing and hiking.
  • What an absolutely magical place to stay! The first thing I send when I entered the cottage was, "This is so much better than the photos!" and it really is. The whole cottage is full of character, plenty of space to get comfortable, and just a really great place to unwind. We had a wonderful time telling stories by the fire and having a little jam on the old piano and a cajón. Catherine was great to communicate with and check-in was easy. Highly recommended and I really hope I can get back soon myself!

    Hannah2020-03-16T00:00:00Z
  • The Dempsey Cottage is a feast for the senses...raspberries growing outside the backdoor...antiques...modern conveniences...comfy beds and blankets...cows and sheep across the way...access to night sky and quiet walks. Our group of five were very comfortable!

  • Marie's cottage was a great place to relax in the Irish countryside, not far from Roscommon Town, Strokestown, and Castlerea. Marie greeted us warmly, made sure we were settled in with a nice fire, and messaged to see if we needed anything. The kitchen worked out great as we always like to cook for ourselves and it had everything we needed. Keep in mind there is no wi-fi so I picked up a vodafone SIM and tethered to my phone while here. We will see you again and recommend your place to family and friends when they visit the area.

    Chris2020-03-14T00:00:00Z
  • It is hosts like Marie that make your experience in Ireland truly memorable. The cottage is absolutely amazing. It was cold outside but the cottage was very warm and cosy, we spent the evening close to the stove enjoying the amazing smell of turf. The beds and pillows were so comfortable that we had one of our best nights of sleep. We had fresh delicious breads and scones for breakfast. Could not recommended the place enough, THANKS AGAIN MARIE! xxxx

  • Little piece of heaven with us. Quiet, tranquil place. Great for walks. Very stylish cottage.

  • What a beautiful place to ring in the new year.... From beginning to end our trip was wonderful. Marie is the nicest lady you will meet she went above and beyond to make sure we had the best time recommending places to go etc. When we arrived she left some lovely home made bread and scones which were delicious some milk and butter was also in the fridge tea coffee sugar and cereals. She also had the stove lighting for us which made the cottage so warm and welcoming. We were a party of 2 adults and 2 kids our children adored this place and were so sad to leave the bedroom is a good size room and then there is a pull out sofa bed in the sitting room which was very comfortable. There is everything you will need in the cottage and our host even supplied us with more turf for the fire. We had the pleasure of meeting Marie’s husband Tom who is also a gent. The cottage is out of the town on a lovely lane which we went for a walk up it was so nice and we did not see one car come up the lane which makes it so safe for children we made sure they knew where they could play and where was out of boundaries it was exactly what we were looking for a little break in the country side with peace and quite and not far from lovely restaurants and walks to name a couple we went to Loughminane park and moate park which was recommended to us by Marie. We will defiantly be back in the summer to explore some more of the lovely places this part of the country has to offer. Thank you so much Marie for our lovely stay xx

    Tiffany2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • This charming cottage is the most well-designed and decorated place in which we've ever stayed. It's conveniently located, the hosts are fabulous, and we had everything we needed here. I'm only sorry we didn't plan to stay longer! Every linen, mirror, dish, painting, and coaster was clearly chosen with an artist's eye and deep care. It shows. This place is a total gem. Lee and Simona were wonderful hosts, very responsive, kind to us and our kids, and their family even told ours about a horse we could visit a block up the road, which our kids especially loved. Our whole stay was a warm, welcoming, wonderful experience!

They responded quickly and were very helpful with anything we needed. Everything was clean and the decor was the best. I would stay here again and recommend it to anyone coming through the area!

He then left us to ourselves but said that he was at the end of the phone if we needed anything. It was such a relaxing weekend and we were not in need of anything. We have already spoken about how we would love to stay again and for longer!

  • We had a lovely time in Roscommon. It was a lovely break for us and a great location to relax in. The house feels like a home and is very clean and comfortable. Grainne was so nice to us and made us feel welcome. I would definitely recommend it as a place to stay. Our six month old had ample space to crawl around and Sadie our dog loved the forest walks nearby as well. Thanks again. Brendan & Maire

  • What a wonderful stay! Simon’s parents live just down the road and were so hospitable, friendly and helpful. One member of our party was interested in a tour of the farm and Mr. Gilligan took came by and picked him up and took him on a personal tour. The house was just beautiful and very well appointed. We so enjoyed our time there and would definitely stay again. Highly recommend it! Thank you so much for making it a wonderful time.

It is on a lovely, quiet street that feels secluded but is quite close to stores, Lough Key park, Boyle, etc. The hosts are so kind, friendly and helpful. Their warmth added a lot to our Irish holiday. :) The home seems new and is lovely and clean. The shower was modern and excellent. This home away from home is ideal!

My house is in a gated development, and has a beautiful view of the river Shannon. Dromod is a small, picturesque village with many Tidy Town awards to its name and has an inland waterways public harbour. It is halfway between Longford and the beautiful Carrick-on- Shannon. The guest bedroom (4.80mx3.50) is comfortably furnished, carpeted, with a garden view. Guests will have the use of a private bathroom, opposite the bedroom, with a whirlpool bath, shower and toilet (not en-suite). Peaceful!
My home is an oasis of peace and quiet, with nature and the river Shannon part of the landscape. It reflects my love of travel, and the life and culture of an island, as well as Central Europe. The perfect place to find escape from the busy-ness of everyday life, an anti-dose to the hectic city environment.
My house is in a gated, residential area. A lot of green spaces, a harbour on the river Shannon, and peace and tranquillity are the main features. It is only a 5-minute walk to the village, where there are pubs/restaurants, a supermarket, and a train station, linking Dublin with Sligo, on the Atlantic coast. Local people are welcoming and helpful.

  • Karla has a great house, and it has great decor. We thoroughly recommend it. It is sparkling clean, with a very comfy bed and a large bedroom, and it's great to have a bathroom to yourselves. The house has a great view over the Shannon. We went to Cox's Bar for a meal which was great quality and very friendly. It's only a 10 minute stroll away. If we're passing through the middle of Ireland again we would definitely stay with Karla. Fiona and Michael

  • This is a really cute house with loads of character! The house is sparkling clean and very well maintained; the photos don’t really do it justice. It is very spacious - we had more than enough space for a family of 4 and a nanny for 3 weeks. I would highly recommend Michael’s house and look forward to returning.

  • Michael and his home are amazing. We felt like we were in the middle of an Irish fairy tale. Michael welcomed us warmly and gave us the lay of the land. We spend a fantastic few days exploring. His home is immaculately clean and he even left us some tea, milk and welcoming snacks. It was a wonderful multi-generational vacation. We were lucky to all be together in such a beautiful space.
