Places to stay in West Firle
The Shepherd's hut sits just on the edge of Firle, one of the South Downs most iconic villages. It is a very private space, in it's own little meadow, two minutes walk to the shop and three minutes to the famous Ram Inn with Lewes and Brighton nearby
the hut is in it's own paddock overlooking the south downs, close to the pub and the little village shop. From March to the end of September i will only take two night bookings during the week end, in the week one night bookings are fine. Over the Christmas and new year period i will only take two night bookings and over Easter and the for the Love Supreme Festival a three night booking as a couple.

  • Fantastic space for a single or very snugly duo. Don't expect hot showers, ceramic hobs or electric. All off grid, loo in church cross the way. But for peace, rejuvenation, health and silence (apart from wind in the trees and cock pheasants calling for a mate)you can't be beat. plus the superlative Ram Inn down the road for breakfast lunch and dinner.....! If you can't get through cos of virus inflamation goggle peter Firle.

  • Amazing place to get away, and Peter was really helpful at communicating everything I needed to know. Would definitely visit again

  • Lovely tranquil setting 😊

    Olivia2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • Find a stripped back, simple space with all that you really need. Wild winds from the Downs to rock you to sleep, rooks to waken you and primroses to greet you in the Spring mornings. (Plus a great pub 5 minutes walk away....)

  • It’s was a great 👍

  • This is a very sweet and tranquil place, with a warm welcome.

  • The hut is nestled in a lovely spot on the edge of the village, and was perfect for me as someone wanting to get away from it for a few days. As Larkin says, "only the young can be alone freely" and whether you agree with this or not, as someone who is not young, and has a fair number of responsibilities, to have a soulful bolt hole to skedaddle to is a great boon. When I took leave of the place and thanked Peter as I left, he said that the hut was becoming a sanctuary for some. For me, it was more of a haven - for me there is something very boat-like in its compact, unfussy, recycled elegance . I look forward to clambering on board again.

  • Peter’s hut is so beautiful and tranquil. Perfect break for me to get away from it all and recharge. Sublime views, watched the sunrise come over the hills while having a hot tea and listening to the birds. Unlike anywhere I’ve been before, would definitely recommend.

  • We loved staying in Alison’s comfortable cabin. What a beautiful view! Great location. We would highly recommend to anyone wanting to explore the South Downs area.

  • Jackson’s Cabin is an absolute gem! Alison & Charlie’s hospitality is amazing, the cabin is the perfect escape for a weekend away from busy life. The flowers, homemade marmalade & extra touches were lovely, and we loved sitting by the fire after a long day walking. The walk down to the coast is beautiful, with great stops along the way in villages like Litlington. The Sussex Ox around the corner from the house is great for Sunday lunch and there are lots of local walks too! Thanks again, we’ll be back!

  • A beautiful cosy retreat in a fantastic location. 3 days of walking (routes from the doorstep) and trail running in the South Downs. The weather was wild and it was wonderful to return to a wood burning stove, in a homely, cosy and beautifully presented cabin. Lovely little touches throughout - even had scones and jam on arrival - thank you.

    Alice2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful cabin in a beautiful location with everything you could need for a countryside getaway. The cabin has everything you could need from breakfast cereal and scones that were a wonderful extra treat, to the local walking maps which were absolutely brilliant. Would love to come back soon!

  • A wonderful relaxed getaway. Alison is a kind, generous and thoughtful host.

    Christine2020-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • Deep in the country but reachable by public transport, Allison's cabin is surrounded by easy walks to quaint villages, pubs and even a brewery. Sparkling clean, warm and peaceful cabin, great for a writing, reading and exploring the South Downs.

  • We have just spent a lovely cosy Christmas in Jackson’s Cabin, it was our second stay and hope to return again.

    Madeline2019-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful time in Jackson’s cabin, the photos make it look lovely but it’s even nicer in real life - it’s such a lovely space, clean, modern and has everything you’d ever need, lots of maps, loads of kitchen utensils, board games, and the view out of the window is beautiful. We wouldn’t hesitate to come back, it’s definitely one of the nicest Airbnb’s we’ve stayed at, and Alice was a fantastic host. Would recommend for a peaceful weekend escape in the country.

Top floor, light and spacious double room with fireplace in character Victorian house with garden. The room has a comfortable double bed, painted floor, large bay window and original Victorian furniture. I am close to trains, buses, ferry, beach and hill walks.
I am a yoga teacher and massage therapist so can offer you one to one yoga lessons or a relaxing massage in a lovely quiet warm space. I am also a great cook and will make you a delicious evening meal if you give me enough notice. The house has a garden and a really friendly cat. The house is quirky, old and a little inconvenient, interesting and shabby. I need to point out that the bathroom is in the basement and the bedroom is 2 flights of stairs up so it is not suitable for anyone disabled or infirm. I have had new windows fitted since writing the above so it is much quieter now but in the summer the seagulls can be noisy. So bring some earplugs if you are sensitive to noise.
Newhaven is on the outside just another industrial small town but has a great beach and cliffs, is only minutes away from the Ferry terminal to Dieppe. Brighton is 30 mins away by bus or train and the historic town of Lewes with it's castle and ancient windy streets is 10 mins by train. I am only minutes walk away from the beautiful downs and river walks.
  • Suzanne is very caring and welcoming. She has a lovely and comfortable home. The apartment is close to the port so if you arrive by ferry (like me) it’s perfect. You have everything close by. It was a perfect stay for me. Thank you again Suzanne

  • Suzanne was a lovely and warm host and her home is beautiful and peaceful. It's perfect if you just want some time out or want to explore Lewes /Brighton (very close on the train). When I arrived I had a warm bath with salts and essential oils, a nice cup of tea and read one of her many interesting books. She also provided breakfast/tea and coffee for me which was a thoughtful touch. Overall I would highly recommend- Suzanne really is a suoerhost!

  • A great stay in a cozy, warmly decorated room and house. Suzanne provided breakfast for us as well. A great spot for the Seven sisters walk. Thanks for having us!

  • After walking 22km, I was exhausted and famished. Suzanne ran a bath (with epson salt and scented trinkets), directed me to a delicious local fish platter and was perfectly pleasant throughout my stay.

  • Had an absolutely wonderful stay. My room was perfect and Suzanne couldn't have been a friendlier, kinder host.

Just a few minutes walk downhill from the South Downs Way ‘The Loft’ is the perfect place to retreat after a long day’s hike or cycle. With our local pub 300 meters up the road a pint and a hearty meal await. ‘The Loft’ is situated in a quintessentially English village where a 16th century thatched cottage can be seen across the garden and Virginia Woolf’s ‘Monks House’ is just down the road. You can't help but relax and unwind when you visit The Loft. It's the perfect get away.
The Loft is a light, modern first floor apartment with its own private entrance and parking space. The kitchen is well equipped with all you will need and tea and coffee making facilities will be waiting for you when you arrive. Free wi-fi is available too. We also offer an optional 'breakfast tray' and fresh eggs from our own chickens that you'll see when you visit. Please enquire about prices and products when booking.
Rodmell is a lovely quiet village. Whilst there are no streetlights or shops we do have a variety of interesting buildings and history abounds, from thatched cottages and the 12th century St Peters Church to The Monks House (former home of Virginia Woolf and now owned by the National Trust) and our local pub The Abergavenny Arms.
  • Lovey cosy and quiet stay, great for country walks! The Loft itself was clean and well furnished

Dream easily in a bespoke 4-poster bed, and there's a second pretty bedroom. Come morning, wake to a peaceful hideaway brimming with character, art, and beautiful objects in this historic village. Pick a good book to take to the flower-filled garden, and in the winter light the log burner. Plenty to discover in the village and surrounding area, enjoy some of the best walking in the country. All within a couple of hours of London. Close to the Seven Sisters Country Park and the glorious coast and beaches. All this, and we're nestled within the South Downs National Park. Heaven!
This bright and airy house is ideal for a relaxing break. The area has everything you need for a great walking or cycling holiday or just mooching about. You can just stroll around and enjoy all the lovely pubs and tea houses in the village. Alfriston has one of the best independent bookshops in the country - Much Ado Books. Badgers Tea House is just across the road - a wonderful place to relax (a 10% discount is offered to my guests). Well behaved dogs are welcome (not on the furniture or upstairs please) and they're welcomed in most places around the village. In the winter there is a log burner (initial basket of logs supplied). My house has many times been described as light and "cosy", and is filled with art and interesting things - this is where I live in between bookings so is very much a HOME and not a holiday let.
The house is in a beautiful medieval village nestling in the heart of the South Downs National Park. The South Downs Way is steps away, while rolling hills, Friston Forest, Cuckmere Haven, and the world-famous Seven Sisters cliffs are not far off. With a wealth of different terrains, you can enjoy every type of walk, from a stroll along the river to a challenging all day yomp!. Walk along the Seven Sisters Heritage Coast or over the Downs. Or just mooch around the village shops and tearooms.
  • Very comfortable stay in a great little village

    Chris2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • When we arrived, the village was partially flooded and the main road into the village was impassable. The back road was totally clogged with people picking up their children from school and we had to drive for about 30 minutes to access Jilly’s place from the other side of town. For a while, we didn’t think we would actually be able to get to the house and when we finally parked, we were confronted with another flood that made us think we’d never get to our destination. In steps Jilly, walking her dog and randomly bumping into us in our moment of need! (We were walking in the wrong direction, despite her brilliant instructions!). Jilly showed us to the house and saw us in. She is super friendly and helpful as had even arranged flowers and fizz to be in the house because we were celebrating my wife’s birthday. The TV in the house is tiny and the shelves are packed with books. This says everything about the place in terms of how relaxing it is. We lit the log burner each night, put on music, read and chilled out. A tv free weekend that did us the world of good. On Saturday we wanted to plan a walk that avoided the flooding. Jilly stepped in again, after having messaged her, she popped by and gave us some great suggestions as to where we might go. We took her advice and had a brilliant walk on the Downs. I don’t want to make out that the house was without it’s comforts. It had everything we needed and more. The art was fun, the kitchen fully stocked - the dishwasher was perfect! We had breakfast in The Singing Kettle on Saturday and the village shop is amazing (proper quality local produce and amazing friendly service). The fact that the village was cut off by floods and water works meant it was super quiet and we found it to be completely calming the minute we arrived. Thank You Jilly.

  • Jilly made us feel most welcome in her beautiful home situated in a lovely quaint village. I thoroughly recommend booking if you are looking for a quiet weekend away filled with walks, pubs and nearby wineries to explore.

    Jessica2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Jilly's home exceeded our (already high) expectations. We've scored her 5/5 on every aspect of our experience. Her house is stylish, cosy and perfectly placed for walks, pubs and a relaxing break away from the usual busy routine. Jilly went the extra mile to ensure we had a top-notch time! We're already planning a return visit...

  • Jilly's communication and recommendations were perfect, adorable village and lovely house. Enjoyed ourselves hugely.

  • Jillyan place is immaculate, cozy, full of stylish and quirky touches (love the palm tree in the bathroom) and super convenient in a pretty village with great local shops and good tea rooms. Jilly was super helpful and friendly, from extra wood for the log burner, to lots of useful info about the house and area, and her delightful home so well organized, wish I could have stayed longer.

  • Penny's studio was very clean, pleasant and comfortable for the two of us to stay, and is located in a charming village. Penny was communicative and helpful about directions and things to see and do. West Firle has a beautiful little church that is worth visiting, as well as a cosy pub close by to the house. We had a great walk all the way from Firle to Wilmington to see the Long Man, which is highly recommended! Expect a long walk from Glynde station to the house if you don't have a car, and taxis are fairly expensive, but expect beautiful walks from every direction.

  • A beautiful cosy place, not too small, quiet and peaceful, everything works fine, we ate at the Rams Inn, which was really nice, we were at Rye before and went to Lewes the next day, both are beautiful old towns.

  • Great place, lovely pub just down the road, excellent walking and a warm welcome, perfect get away!

  • Great stay at Diane’s place! It was much bigger than we had imagined with a separate sitting space and bedroom area, and very well equipped. Great location for walking (we arrived by foot), a charming village and great food at the local pub. Communication with Diane was easy and she kindly helped us out with logistics of supplies as the local shop was shut by the time we arrived - thanks Diane!

  • Diane's cabin in Firle is a great place for a weekend away. The cabin was clean, warm and in a great location. Firle is a lovely village with great walks from the doorstep of the cabin and an excellent local pub! It was easy to get to and Diane was a really friendly and hospitable host. Highly recommended!

  • My boyfriend and I stayed at Dianes place for a night as we had a wedding just down the road and it was perfect! The photos really didn’t do it justice, the place is much bigger than it looks. Firle is a gorgeous village and I would love to come back and explore the area.

    Alicia2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • Diane was really kind and helpful and quick to communicate. The lodge was just perfect for my husband and I on a few days' walking trip on the South Downs way.

  • I've been living in this perfect apartment for six weeks, and I can't find the words to express how well I've felt. The apartment has absolutely everything that you need (and more), the heating is fantastic, everything is new and it's spotlessly clean. There's no single thing I can complain about. Caroline and her husband are fantastic, they've made me feel really at home. I'm looking forward to being here again.

Caroline was quick to respond whenever I messaged her and went out of her way to help us out when we needed anything. * We are offering a ‘self Isolation live and work space’ during these difficult times. We can do your shop and deliver to your door and bring deliveries without physical contact. Due to current health concerns we’re taking extra care to deep clean the flat on every turn over. We wash all bedding , towels and covers on a hot wash, in addition to this wipe down all surfaces and handles after a proper clean with a bleach solution. We also have cleaning products on hand should you wish to use them
Our flat is a brand new renovation in the centre of Lewes, originally the beer cellar for The Red White and Blue pub built in 1827 it is now a light and airy, modern well equipped space for a relaxing get away. You have your own front door and the space is completely self contained. The kitchen has an electric oven, dishwasher and washing machine and all the items you'd need if you wanted to cook up a feast. Should you want to eat out the flat is in the very centre of Lewes so all the pubs and restaurants Lewes has to offer are only ever a few minutes walk away.
Lewes is a busy town with lots going on, the town boasts a huge amount of independent shops and restaurants, The Needlemakers is a great place for shopping as is Cliffe High Street for antiquing.
  • Very central, beautifully decorated, and sparkling clean. We had a brilliant time at Anna's place and would recommend it to anyone travelling to Lewes.

    Daniel2020-02-08T00:00:00Z
  • Sparkling clean and extremely tastefully built and furnished, the Shepherd’s Hut is a wonderful, tranquil space where you can relax and enjoy the views over the landscape dotted with pheasants. The facilities are fantastic for such a small space and make the whole thing extremely functional, including for cooking, heating (it was winter and, if anything, we were too warm), showering, sleeping and reading. We also did some remote working and found that Vodafone had really good coverage.

A relaxing haven in the middle of Firle village, in the South Downs National Park, close to Glyndebourne, Charleston, the South Downs Way and Lewes. It is 50 metres from the Ram Inn, one of the best pubs in Sussex. It is a separate annex with a small entrance hall, a shower room and a bedroom with a king size bed. There is no kitchen but tea, coffee, milk, granola, yoghurt and fruit is provided in the Annex. A cooked breakfast can be purchased at the pub each day at 9 am onwards.
The bedroom, hall and shower-room form a separate annex to a Civic Trust Award-winning stable conversion in the middle of one of the most atmospheric and beautiful villages in the Sussex Downs. The Annex is not equipped for self-catering, however it is a very short walk to the famous Ram Inn which serves delicious cooked breakfasts, lunches and suppers daily. The Ram is also noted for its excellent beer cellar which stocks, among many others, the nationally-famous beers brewed by Harveys of Lewes and some fine ales made by Firle's micro-brewery, Burning Sky. There are many miles of fantastic walks around Firle. It is a perfect base for people who wish to explore the Downs and the vibrant hubs of Brighton and Lewes. The Annex is close to many local concerts and festivals; most notably those at Glyndebourne Opera House, Charleston and Brighton. The Annex provides digital TV and radio, as well as ethernet internet access and good Wi Fi. The Annex is separate from our house so guests can come and go as they please, but we'd like you treat it with the same respect as if it were your own home. We are happy to accept well behaved and friendly dogs but do ask that they sleep in the hall and are not allowed on the bed! We would prefer not to have cats to stay. Smoking is also not permitted in the Annexe but we are quite happy for guests to smoke outside. Check in is from 2pm and check out by 11am, but we are of course flexible. As we live in the middle of the village we ask that guests don't make lots of noise when returning late at night
Firle is a beautiful, ancient village situated at the end of a cul-de-sac beneath one of the most lovely and dramatic stretches of the Sussex Downs. The village is located within the South Downs National Park. Lewes, the historic and attractive county town of East Sussex, is 5 miles away, as is Glyndebourne Opera House. The cosmopolitan city of Brighton and Hove is 13 miles away.
  • Very comfortable & more spacious than expected. Central, quiet location. Cereal, home made granola, milk, juice, biscuits & fruit. Host helpful & informative. Can recommend

    Janette2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • Liz and Jen are great hosts and even let our dog out in the middle of the day when we were away for a long time. The Annex is small but comfortable with lots of information and everything one needs for a short stay, and the homemade granola for breakfast is delicious. The location is superb with a good pub opposite and a 15 minute cycle ride to the top of the Downs. Lots of delightful villages and Charleston and Glyndbourne nearby.

    Rosemary2019-08-21T00:00:00Z

  • What a super find in a lovely village. Liz and the people we met in the village were all extremely friendly. The annexe had lots of extra bits including full length mirror (needed as a wedding guest), a table and chairs inside if needed and ones outside too, coffee tea and milk. All very comfy and finished off with a brilliant walk up to the Downs. Thank you Liz.

Seaford is a sleepy town, nestled at the foot of the South Downs with beautiful scenic views. Great access to the stunning Cuckmere Valley, Seven Sisters National Park, Beachy Head and more! Many of our guests stay for the night, catch the early ferry to Dieppe or enjoy the day's coastal walk to Eastbourne where they can take the train back home.
The bright, well decorated, double room overlooks the garden with lovely views of the South downs, and if you are lucky, amazing sunsets! Guests have private use of the main bathroom during their stay (we have our own en suite) with shower, bath and towels provided. There is a comfortable double size bed. We kindly request that smokers do not smoke in the house or gardens, thank you.
There are many local pubs, restaurants and cafes in Seaford and if you can travel by car some great places to eat a little further afield. We have made a list of a few ideas and these are in your room for you. (If you find other good places to eat let us know and we can add them to the list!)

The Escape is a one-bedroom cottage, with an open plan living area downstairs. Upstairs has a double bedroom and shower room, with a large walk-in shower. The cosy warmth from the log burner makes The Escape perfect for romantic breaks or relaxation
The Escape is decorated in a modern functional style with, hopefully everything you need to enjoy your stay.
The Escape is set in open countryside, with an excellent 16th Century country Pub next door. The Cock serves great food and is a firm favourite with all our guests.
  • A truly lovely stay, gorgeous tea & scones on arrival which set the tone for a wonderful few days. The cottage is very warm & homely. It’s a perfect location for getting out & about. The little dog called in on us Sunday evening, I think she smelt the lamb we were cooking. She came in and was very friendly. The log burner was wonderful, we had it on both Saturday & Sunday evening. Really lovely cottage, full of character. Beautiful waking up to the fields out the back & even saw a few bunnies jumping around. Joy always replies with quick responses and allowed us extra time this morning to check out. Would thoroughly recommend

  • The Escape is aptly named. This little holiday cottage is a wonderful place to escape to and is ideally placed for exploring the beautiful South Downs and Sussex coast. The place is tastefully decorated, well-equipped and spotlessly clean. Our little dog loved the garden, though the weather didn't allow us to sit outside and enjoy it much. The owners are on hand next door if you need them but are unobstrusive and the attached garden is sufficiently separated from theirs to ensure your privacy. All in all we loved the Escape, one of the best holiday cottages we have visited recently and hope to visit again sometime soon.

We overlook the beautiful Grange Gardens, and Southover Grange (handy for weddings there) is close by. It's a 15 minute walk to be out of the town and up onto the surrounding downs and into stunning countryside and a 20 minute drive to the beach and seaside.
  • This place is one of the best places we've stayed at. The hosts are lovely and very helpful. The room is very private with a lovely view at the Lewes castle. The place is also just a couple of minutes away from the train station but you won't hear a single train. The room is absolutely lovely and beautifully designed. Fitted with everything we needed, there wasn't a single thing we thought we lacked there. Same goes for the private bathroom with a great walk in shower. The breakfast was also provided and waiting in the small fridge fitted in the room. Perfect if you need to leave early to catch a train. Don't hesitate to stay here, you won't regret it!

  • Stu & Aine were excellent hosts! They made our stay such a delight. I arrived to their AirBnB quite late at night, Stu waited up for us and even reserved a parking spot for us! The bedroom has been beautifully decorated and is very well-equipped for your stay! Stu & Aine left some lovely personal touches such as fresh flowers and chocolates on the counter. They were very helpful at directing us around Lewes. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and cannot wait to visit again!

  • Stu & Aine's place is lovely! From start to finish. I can't recommend it highly enough! It is a beautiful room with all you could need. Very comfy bed, warm and cosy. A lovely view over to the Grange gardens and up to the floodlit castle at night. Very quiet and peaceful. Only 2 mins from Lewes station and easy walking distance into the town. You have everything you need: a beautiful ensuite bathroom with a great shower and lovely hot water. Even a warm cosy bathrobe to make you feel at home! The breakfast left in the fridge is delicious and all you could need. Other thoughtful touches just make you feel so welcome. Stu was so helpful: letting me leave my case there before check in time and after check out time. He was so kind giving me tips about where to visit. I couldn't have wanted to stay anywhere else. I would highly recommend staying at their place! Thank you both so much!

The Dower House is a historic building steeped in the art and literature of Bloomsbury. The former home of Quentin Bell, Virginia Woolf’s nephew and biographer, and his wife Anne Olivier, the renowned scholar and editor of Woolf’s diaries, it is the perfect place for a holiday in the heart of rural Sussex. This special house with its magical walled garden and breathtaking views is situated in the heart of the South Downs National Park, just outside Firle village at the foot of the Downs.
We encourage guests to rejoice in the bohemian atmosphere of the Dower House, and not to expect hotel-style technology. However, the house is comfortable and beautifully furnished, with 4 bedrooms (3 doubles and one large single ‘bateau-lit’). The two bathrooms (one en suite) have bathtubs surrounded by hand decorated tiles. At the heart of the house is a generously equipped kitchen which features an inglenook fireplace, large pine kitchen table (seats 8), a modern range cooker and adjacent slate-shelved larder. There is a cosy book-lined study and a spacious drawing room opening onto the terrace and garden, with views of Firle Beacon. A large walled garden surrounds the house, with fruit trees, herbaceous borders and a small ornamental pond. An array of decorative art is featured throughout the house; marvellous pottery, sculpture and tiles hand painted by Quentin Bell, lamps and textiles by Cressida Bell, paintings by Roger de Grey, Julian Bell, Adrian Stokes and Winifred Gill, an assortment of beautiful antique furniture and a carved oak Jacobean staircase. With its fascinating history and unique artistic and literary associations, staying at the Dower House is an unusually intimate and enriching experience.
The historic towns of Lewes, Brighton and Eastbourne are within an easy drive, with Firle Place and Charleston in walking distance. Other local attractions include Monk’s House, Berwick Church, Glyndebourne Opera House, Drusilla’s Zoo, Alfriston Village, Rathfinny Vineyard, Glynde village and the beautiful cliffs and beaches of the Sussex coast. The situation is perfect for hiking; you can see the sea from the top of the Downs in just 20 minutes, then follow the South Downs Way for miles in either direction. Firle village with its shop, pub and church is a short walk away.
  • Beautiful house, great location. Highly recommended.

    Helen2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful, beautiful time in the dower house for my dads 80th - walks on the downs, cosy fires and happy rifling through the countless amazing bookshelves. Very special & magical - many many thanks to the family and in particular to Caroline for all her amazing help and kindness.

    Emily2020-02-13T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful house in a wonderful location. Very comfortable with wonderful decorative interiors.

    Liz2020-01-16T00:00:00Z
  • This is honestly one of the most special places I've ever stayed in my life. As a writer, it was an exceptional place to write, read and think. As a human, it is a warm and soothing space with all the grace notes and unfussy ease of Bloomsbury - it really feels like this house is an encouraging friend.

    Naomi2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • A magical house, filled with beautiful art, fascinating books, antiques, ceramics, interesting textiles, and great spirit. Every room is delightful, but we made our home by the fire in the kitchen and spent hours reading, playing cards, eating delicious local food, and enjoying the beautiful views. We loved our stay here and hope to return.

    Margaret2019-12-02T00:00:00Z
  • This is an incredible house in an ideal location for fans of the artistic life, the South Downs and especially Bloomsbury. Cressida has added wonderful touches to a home already steeped in Bloomsbury history, books, and ceramics and Caroline is such a welcoming and kind caretaker of this special place and the guests who stay there. My daughter and I stayed two weeks and loved every minute--I'm already looking forward to my next stay in May! Highest recommendation.

    Kerry2019-11-02T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay at the Dower House with opportunities for long walks, quiet naps, cozy reading, and table space for 4 artists to work on their own projects in the kitchen. We were most delighted with the home touches and Bloomsbury connections, and after visits to both Monks House and Charleston we were happy to return to our own tiny bit of creative Sussex where we could touch, photograph, and sketch to our hearts' delight.

    Melanie2019-10-18T00:00:00Z
  • This is a magical house in a perfect English parkland setting. It is also very comfortable and there is a huge choice of interesting places to visit and eat out locally. We managed to catch the village fete which was great fun. . Caroline was the perfect host and we cannot wait to make a return visit.

Totally unique, hand-built, cosy cabin with wood-burner, raised cabin bed, shower room and kitchenette. Fully insulated, with electric heating and hot water. Built by Stu & Aine from recycled timber we're in the heart of the town, just 2 minutes from the Station. Perfect for that romantic weekend away !! We look forward to welcoming you to our cabin, our home and our lovely town.
We are in the heart of the town. Just 2 minutes from the station and 10 minutes from the High Street. Everything you might want from Lewes is a short walk away. Our Cabin is a unique and lovingly crafted space. In the main area is the raised bed, with sumptuous mattress, feather and down duvet & pillows and French linen sheets. We supply a continental style breakfast (granola, orange juice, fruit, toasts, jams, marmalade, berries, real or instant coffees and English and herb teas) for you to have at your leisure. The kitchenette has toaster, kettle, fridge, microwave and Belfast sink. In the drawers you'll find cooking utensils. There is a pull out table, chairs and double seating. The en suite shower room is well appointed and we provide free quality toiletries & luxury cotton towels. And there are lots of lovely little touches doted through the cabin. Relax and curl up next to the wood-burning stove and enjoy the views of the garden, or rest on the outdoor deck. The Cabin is well appointed and has everything you need for your stay. It is cosy (think a bit bigger than a Shepherd's Hut) and has lots of storage. It's a two night minimum stay at the weekends & Holidays.
We are so close to Lewes station - it is literally just two minutes (yes - I've timed it !). If you come by car, we can help you with car parking. We overlook the beautiful Grange Gardens, and Southover Grange (handy for weddings there) is close by. It is just a 5 minute walk to Anne of Cleves House (Henry V111's fourth wife), the Castle, the medieval High Street, numerous lovely shops and cafes. It's a 15 minute walk to be out of the town and up onto the surrounding downs and into stunning countryside and a 20 minute drive to the beach and seaside. Glyndebourne, the world famous opera house , is just a ten minute drive away.
  • What a wonderful and cozy spot! A perfect place for a weekend getaway and I imagine even lovelier in the late spring/summer when the garden is in full bloom (though the fire was equally as nice for our time there). Aine and Stu were great throughout our time and went out of their way to make us feel welcome and comfortable. Recommend!

Lewes is a uniquely characterful town with quirky independent shops and an incredible array of pubs, Georgian buildings, cobbled streets and a medieval castle. There's a local cinema / cafe / restaurant called the Depot which is just as good for hanging out as it is for seeing a film. You can easily lose hours in the vintage / antiques shops and local food markets (Fridays and first Saturday of the month). It's a vibrant place for all ages - famous for summer music festivals, Charleston's Speakers Festival and bonfire parades. At the bottom of our road, is a park perfect for kicking a ball and a playground. Other amenities include a local skatepark, outdoor and indoor swimming pools, tennis courts, churches, historic buildings, music recitals and gig venues (The Con Club two mins away is worth checking for listings). There are various websites (eg. Viva Lewes) where you can see what's on.
  • A delightful place to stay, bright, cozy, warm (in early March) and brilliantly well designed and equipped. We were made very welcome and felt truly relaxed throughout our stay. It's an easy walk to the High Street with it's great independent shops and cafes and there's a friendly pub a short stroll away. We will be back!

  • This cottage is cosy, clean and entirely beautiful. It is in an ideal location; Lewes station and the town centre are each within a ten-minute walk and there is a little shop just seconds away from the cottage. It is removed enough from the bustle of the town but is still close enough to everything you might need. The idea behind my trip to Lewes was to use Ed and Abi’s cottage as a base to go to Sussex University campus to study at the library. However, the cottage was so beautiful, comfortable and homely that I did not go to the library once! As soon as I arrived I felt at home, due to the tasteful design flourishes and excellent use of space. The sense of homeliness was helped largely too by Abi, who gave me a really comprehensive welcome. Every base was covered; she was so welcoming, friendly, and took a genuine interest in me and my studies. As the cottage is still in its early days, Ed checked throughout my trip that I was comfortable and everything was working, which it absolutely was. The cottage was warm enough during my stay, and it was excellent that I could turn down the radiator if needed. The cottage itself is beautiful, and feels homely, cosy and close but not at all claustrophobic. This is down to the efficient use of space in its design; every area is utilised and fits neatly together, whilst still maintaining that effortless finesse and style evident in the listing’s photos. I particularly love the flooring, it is beautiful reclaimed wood. It sets off the entire cottage with real individuality — something I imagine is difficult in a space this size. The bathroom is also stunning, and its large size does not compromise the rest of the space at all because it is so neatly tucked behind the kitchen. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything required for even the most adventurous chef. As well as the quality kitchenware, I loved the really luxurious cooking oil and sea salt. These little touches, as well as the stunning interior design of the cottage really gave it a polish that Ed and Abi should be proud of. I really don’t have any criticisms of the space at all; the bed is the comfiest Airbnb bed I’ve stayed in, the TV is abundant with entertainment, and the laddered mezzanine creates gorgeous levels in the cottage. I was properly looked-after and will absolutely be coming back. This cottage is criminally good value, and I don’t doubt Ed and Abi will be Superhosts in no time. Book this space up up while you can, because at a price like this I know the cottage will be snapped up.

Beautiful barn, perfect for walkers, with a breakfast to set you up for the day. Also great as a comfortable, spacious base to explore the local countryside and cultural attractions including Glyndebourne, and the local Bloomsbury heritage. This spacious artist's home is located right on the South Downs Way, and only about an hour and a half walk to the coast at Exceat. There is a tree house for kids, swing seats for chilling out on, and the Cuckmere runs through the bottom of the garden.
Lovely secluded spot, giving directly onto the South Downs Way, as a welcome haven for walkers, close to the picturesque medieval village of Alfriston, with its numerous pubs and tea rooms, and a short walk from the popular rated Sussex Ox pub. It makes a great base for a longer stay as there are loads of local activities and days out to be had in the area, and enough space to just hang out and enjoy the garden.
Right on the South Downs way, and a good walk from the coast, there is also good access (30 mins) to Brighton, and close to Lewes and Eastbourne. The magnificent Birling Gap is a short drive, as is Charleston Manor, home to cultural icons, the Bloomsbury set,Glyndebourne is also a short drive away. Foodies can get delicious organic and local produce at Middle Farm which also provides great entertainment for children. Also Drusilla's Park is extremely close, an unforgettable day out for children with loads of activities and one of the best outdoor playgrounds I have ever seen.

  • A lovely room in a good location near the sea. Sally is a great host, very warm and welcoming. Breakfast is also delicious!

  • I particularly recommend this good address. Sally is welcoming. She is attentive, accommodating and responsive to messages. The relationship with it is simple and fluid. His nicely decorated house is comfortable, very well located (near Brighton and 10 minutes from the ferry to Dieppe), in a very quiet area, rest assured. No worries about parking and the security of your car that you can park on Sally's property or in a dead end. One last word on the homemade cookies, all hot that Sally prepares for breakfast: a treat for the taste buds!

  • Sally’s place is homely, comfortable and very clean. Big driveway, but watch the high curb as you back in! Sally is a great host and I really appreciated her hospitality. I definitely recommend her place and hope to stay again when I next channel hop via Newhaven.

We are right in the centre of town minutes from trains station, independent cinema with three screens, and high street. Easy access to walks and bike rides in the South Downs National Park and universities in Brighton.
The studio is a lovely, light and airy space with double height ceilings, bathroom and kitchen and its own private balcony with views to the South Downs and townscape. It forms part of our historic central Lewes house built in 1792 but is completely seperate with its own lockable door. We are however on hand in the houseif you need anything.

We have a large Victorian terraced house, very close to bus stops, train station and 10 minute walk from the sea. This is an ideal base to explore the best places in Sussex. Brighton is only 15/20 minutes driving, Lewes in 10 minutes, Newhaven Fort in walking distance, Seven Sister 10 minutes, ferry to France - Dieppe.
The room is a very nice double bedroom, with a triple bunk bed (double bed down, single up). Breakfast included, you'll find milk, coffee (black or espresso), local homemade jam, cereals, biscuits. Towels and bed linen included. Wifi included.
Newhaven is a small town but has lots of great places: - the Hope Inn pub, traditional english pub with sea view in Newhaven Harbour - Bickerstaffs, the best fishmonger in Sussex. Fresh local fish every day, really good - Newhaven Fort - Museum, the largest defence work ever built in Sussex. - Luna Rossa Italian Restaurant, authentic italian restaurant in Newhaven Harbour - Piddinghoe Farm Shop, our favourite farm shop in the area - the Ark pub, modern pub with local beers and good food menu in Newhaven centre, next to the River pedestrian area.
  • My partner and I stayed at Matteo and Cecilia's place for one night to catch the ferry in the morning. They are very kind and I would definitely recommend staying at their place :)

    Zaina2019-10-05T00:00:00Z
  • Very nice place. Close to the ferry and train station. Loved the dog. Kitty litter a bit close to bed room. Nice hospitality; made us cappuccino and loaned us water bottles.

    Gillian2019-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • Matteo’s place was perfect, just what we needed after a long day of travelling. Room and bathroom were sparkling clean, lovely decorations, pets were really cute. Would highly recommend !!

    Francesca2019-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • Matteo and Cecilia are very lovely hosts! She and her cute dog Chapo make us feel welcome. The cats were mostly invisible. Our room was clean, like everything in the room House! There is Wi-Fi, but no TV in the room. Enough towels are available. You park in the street, with luck on your doorstep .... but uncomplicated! Matteo drives his car at Befarf where else! We recommend this accommodation!

    Jutta2019-08-06T00:00:00Z
  • It was a great stay, very comfy bed and lovely hosts!

    Theresa2019-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent address, high availability and responsiveness Mattéo. Direct proximity to the ferry, 5 minutes by bike. We were able to put our bikes in the garden, at the back of the house, safely. I booked the night the night before, and Matteo immediately responded and responded favorably.

Once an old cart shed 'The Annexe' has been converted into a self-contained two-bed house. • Elena and Gavin’s house is lovely and we really felt at home. The bedroom and bathroom were cute and sparkling clean. The breakfast (Gavin made homemade bread!) and view were amazing. Gavin gave us some great local tips for walking as we didn’t have a car - there is a lovely pub 20 mins walk from the house. Thanks again!

  • We loved our stay here, cosy/warm private room and en-suite in a beautiful home. Breakfast was left out for us in the mornings and we enjoyed eating with the views of the garden. In a very cute English country village and not far to drive to the seven sisters cliffs.

    Bridget2019-10-18T00:00:00Z
  • My wife & I enjoyed a couple of days staying here. We had a warm welcome and happy in conversation with our hosts who provided excellent local knowledge ( and maps!) as well as freshly baked bread for us to enjoy with our breakfast before heading out. The location is wonderful and provided some much need respite from city living! We enjoyed walks along the severn sisters as well as food in the nearby towns. Hopefully we will return in the not too distant future!

  • We had only just got through the door when we decided this was the loveliest Airbnb we have ever stayed in. A sensational and beautiful conversion of a traditional Sussex building in a very tasteful and arty style. Very comfortable and huge bed, great shower room, unusually well equipped kitchen and a spacious sitting area with a good TV. We were visiting a relative in Seaford and we loved that we were in a quiet little village, yet very close to the main road and the town. We hope to stay again - especially in the summer, when I can imagine the walled outside area will be a beautiful space.

    Nick2019-10-30T00:00:00Z

My place is in central Lewes with its historical architecture, shops and restaurants. We are near to the railway station, bus routes, close to South Downs National Park and Glyndebourne Opera House. One hour from London. It is a fully furnished and equipped, light, basement flat with its own entrance. Parking is close by. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, and business travellers.
The flat has one bedroom with an en-suite shower, toilet and basin. The kitchen is equipped with a microwave, 2 ring hob and oven, freezer, fridge, toaster, electric kettle. There is no dishwasher.
Lewes is a pretty, historic town with many small shops, a castle, museum, swimming pool (indoor and outdoor), new, award winning cinema, interesting architecture and lovely views and country walks all around. My place is right in the centre so all the amenities are within easy walking distance and you can be on top of the Downs in 10 minutes
