  • Beautiful cottage in a great location.

  • A rare wooden house may have a hundred-year history. It is not the same as a modern house. It is a strange experience.

    Yiqiang2019-11-21T00:00:00Z
  • Just gorgeous, much larger and more interesting than the photos. Doors everywhere to allow a cool breeze. Very clean and very comfortable, it was a lovely refuge from the blistering heat outside (late November). Pretty garden to sit outside and watch dusk fall, with the birds in the trees. Easy to imagine how it was for early settlers, a perfect spot.

    Jane2019-11-20T00:00:00Z
  • The photos didn't do this place justice! A lovely, and evidently much-loved cottage, that has been restored with sensitivity and is very comfortable, relaxed and private - we would come back again in a heartbeat.

    Melrose, SA, Australia

A picturesque rustic stone homestead on 200 acres located on the Willochra Plains, a couple of kms from the historic town of Bruce. Approximately 35 minute drive from beautiful Melrose and Mount Remarkable, and a 20 minute drive to historic Quorn, home to the world famous Pichi Richi Railway. The homestead consists of 3 bedrooms inside the house and a sleep-out. There is a well equipped country style kitchen with AC and wood fire, bathroom with inside toilet, and lounge with reverse cycle AC.
Booking: Please message us if the dates you require are not available. Some dates have been blocked out to allow time for the property to be accessed for cleaning or ensure rainwater levels are maintained. PLEASE NOTE: 3 night minimum over long weekends and 4 night minimum over Easter Property: 'Gay Hall' homestead (circa 1920) was the original house on a 6000 acre wool growing property that stretched further to the North. The property now comprises of the 200 acre 'house paddock' and still has some of the original infrastructure such as the shearing shed, which you are free to have a look around. You are also free to explore the 200 acres that mainly stretches South and West from the house. With all its flatness and saltbush though, this exploring may not take too long but does give plenty of room for the kids to ride their bikes around. The well equipped country style kitchen has been freshly painted and comprises of a new fridge and electric stove/oven, microwave, toaster, kettle and some basic condiments. There is also a wood fire combustion heater in the kitchen and some fire wood will be supplied. The comfortable lounge has also been freshly painted and comprises of a reverse cycle air conditioner, digital TV, dvd player, games and an old piano (slightly out of tune!). A washing machine is available but we ask that it gets used minimally to conserve rain water. The three main bedrooms all have pressed tin ceilings, ceiling fans and polished Jarrah floor boards, and are equipped with extra heating and cooling appliances if required. The sleep-out is carpeted and is provided with a pedestal fan. As the property is not short on space, there is plenty of room for parking up caravans and sleeping in a house for a change, an affordable option for those caravanning convoys. Region: From the house looking South, you can see Mount Remarkable next to Melrose, a beautiful town to visit. To the East is the Horseshoe Top-End for keen 4 wheel drivers (contact them first). And looking far to the North West, the highest peak is Mount Arden which is past historic Quorn and near Warren Gorge, home to rare Yellow Footed Rock Wallabies. These are some of the great locations to explore and the property is conveniently located to a number of Flinders Ranges sights. Things to know: The house itself is showing wear in some sections with cracked walls (joys of a stone house with fluctuating seasons!), although this does add to its character. The house is supplied with rainwater only and we encourage you to bring your own water for drinking as we cannot ensure the rainwater is always safe to drink. We also ask that you keep showers short to save water, and suggest you will anyway (especially in Winter) as the shower isn't the best!! There are also snakes around in the warmer months so keep a look out. When walking around the property, please note that this was an operating wool growing property so there are still plenty of old items and barbed wire lying around. Access and location: This property is relatively remote (you cannot see your neighbours) and you will have very limited interaction with us. We are contactable by phone or email during your stay, but it may take some time to attend the property if an issue requires attention (especially if a tradesman is required). An IGA, service station and hardware store (both limited open hours on the weekend) and hospital are located in Quorn, and another shop and hardware store with fuel is located in Wilmington (usually only closed on Sunday afternoons). You may also be required to switch on and off the amenities such as power, water and gas depending on the timing of your stay but typically the cleaner will do this prior to your arrival. Access from the Wilmington to Quorn bitumen road is via 12km's of dirt road. Typically the road is good for 2WD vehicles but after a rain, a 4WD would be required as it gets very slippery and muddy. The Telstra 4G network is available but other carriers are intermittent. There is no Wifi/Internet available other than what is available on your phone. Summary: We have tried to give you the most honest description of the property as we can to ensure you know exactly what to expect when you arrive, hopefully without putting you off! We have owned this property for 13 years and know the previous family who owned the property well. As a family, we have had many enjoyable trips to this property and believe other families (who want to leave the tent or caravan home for a change) will do too.
  • Such a beautiful place, such an amazing experience. Please do yourself a favour and check in to check out. Extremely grateful to stay and Adam & his family are so welcoming & accomodating, thank you once again - 🌌🌌

Several local wineries with cellar door tastings are located within a short drive. Melrose is the oldest settled town in the Flinders Ranges with many interesting historic buildings including both pubs, Jacka's Brewery and several original settler pug and pine cottages, some still used as homes. There is a well-stocked general store open seven days a week as well as coffee shops all within a short walk from your stay.
  • Lynn is an excellent host who communicates with her clients quickly and efficiently. She is very accommodating and flexible which we appreciated greatly. Unfortunately we did not get to stay at her property due to Corona virus - our cancellation was handled very quickly and without fuss. Highly recommend Lynn as a host.

  • Great place for family or group to stay and socialise in the heart of Melrose. Living and outdoor entertaining areas a feature. Pretty garden, off street parking. Well appointed and very clean. Easy access to shops, pubs and cafes, and the wonderful Mt Remarkable National Park

    James2019-10-15T00:00:00Z
  • Stayed here as a family of four. Location is excellent, right next to the local bike shop which has good coffee and snacks and in between the 2 pubs. The house is comfortable and well decorated both inside and out. Wished we had longer than our 2 nights to better utilise the great outdoor deck with its own bar and couches and the fire pit area. Nice to have the basics like glad wrap, sauce, etc to utilise and the Nespresso machine was great as well. Lynne was very helpful and quick to communicate with and no issues at all with our stay.

Our place is in the Southern Flinders Ranges; a lovely stopover on your way to the Flinders Ranges and beyond. We offer you a very cosy and comfortable cottage set on 18 acres surrounded by Australian native trees, a winter creek (the Rocky River), and a few friendly farm animals. You will have the cottage all to yourself, and all the peace and quiet you like. There is a sofa bed in the living room and a single bed mattress under the bed, if you need for a child or third person.
The Southern Flinders Ranges has some wonderful bakeries and wineries, and local produce for sale. The Wirrabara Producers Market, held on the 3rd Sunday of each month, is one of the region's best. Mount Remarkable National Park, Wirrabara Forest and Telowie Gorge offer spectacular scenery and walking tracks. The beautiful scenery, as you drive through Port Germein Gorge Road to the Spencer Gulf, is well worth the trip. The Heysen Trail and Mawson Trail are easily accessible from our place (5 minute walk/bike ride).
  • Fantastic little place to base yourself for some southern Flinders exploration. Erica is very hospitable and her property and the animals on it, provided great entertainment for my 3 year old daughter. Highly recommend!

  • I would highly recommend Rocky River Cottage for a peaceful and comfortable stay in the country. The cottage has a quaint and cosy interior with lots of thoughtful touches. Important for us was a well equipped kitchen and high level of cleanliness. The surrounds are lovely although I did not have much of a chance to explore however I can say there's a gorgeous sunrise and the property is great for bird watchers. Thank you Erica for a delightful stay!

    Tanusha2020-03-27T00:00:00Z
  • We had a fantastic stay at this comfortable, cozy, country guest cottage. Some friendly rescue farm animals on the property. Great place for exploring Mount Remarkable and Port Germein.

  • Erica’s place is a charming cottage surrounded by pristine nature. Erica is a great host and made us feel really welcome! I’d highly recommend the rocky river cottage if you’re staying in the area: it’s spacious, clean, has a well equipped kitchen and comfy bed.

    David2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely cosy cottage - perfect base for exploring the local area or just holing up for a few days. Cottage is very well equipped with everything you might need (including a great selection of games) and the garden is a lovely place to watch the birds in the evening. Highly recommended.

    Nick2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Great value, clean, old fashioned but everything you need is there in good order. We only stayed the night, but a couple of days here with a good book watching the birds and enjoying the environment would be good for the soul. Lucy the dog is a real treasure too!

    Christopher2020-03-04T00:00:00Z

We are in the Southern Flinders Ranges with National Parks within easy reach. Pt. Germein is an historic Port town with 1.3 km wooden jetty, perfect for fishing and crabbing. The cottage is located in the grounds of St Clement's Anglican Church circa 1863 now a private residence. Only 23 kms from major rural city of Pt. Pirie. Cottage is self contained and would be described as bright and fresh set in an Australian native garden with undercover car parking.

  • Everything about staying with Marie-Claire & Anthony is fabulous. This is our second visit and we don't hesitate in the least about going back. We are treated like family and also given the space to be who we are. While we might not be good at putting it into words, we really love our time there. See you again soon we hope.

  • Lovely place, with lovely hosts

    Daniel2020-01-22T00:00:00Z
  • Unit was just what I needed, fan above the bed was great, and to have basics already in the fridge was amazing

    Rick2019-12-19T00:00:00Z
  • So far, we’ve found this to be the best bed and breakfast in Port Germein and great value for money. A quiet location and a delightful garden. The unit is relatively spacious but the kitchen is best described as a ‘galley’ kitchen. Very clean and comfortable although the bed was a little soft for our taste but that’s a personal preference. Breakfast was toast, fruit and cereals. Adequate, but I prefer a cooked breakfast so we had to do some shopping. Overall, suitable for couples and maybe one small child.. The hosts are very congenial and obliging.

  • I had a perfect stay at Anthony and Marie-Claire’s place. The house is beautiful and perfect, everything you need is there. The service and hospitality of Anthony and Marie-Claire is beyond your wishes, they helped me out with car problems and they won’t bother you if you don’t want to: I had an absolute amazing stay. They can help you with a lot of local information since they are well known in the area. Highly recommend this place!

If you are on your way the Great Southern Flinders Ranges, make sure you wander in to the Wander Inn Wongabirrie. This refurbished 100 year old building offers luxurious accommodation, nestled in the heart of the Mid North, South Australia. Greatly suited to couples, singles, business people and students for short or long term stays.
This little old solid stone building has some major history. The building itself is over 100 years old and in it's past life was a service station, retail store and a bank just to name a few. Our family decided to bring this beautiful space back to life. The poor old building had seen better days and required a fair bit of repair work to the external and internal walls as well as a new lick of paint. The internal walls have had some very particular detail made to them, where the existing render has been cut out where it had failed and all the natural building stone pointed and exposed to reveal it's beauty. Conveniently located, we are easy to find yet pleasantly private. Be one of the first to experience, a true diamond in the rough.
Wirrabara is a small country town nestled in the heart of the mid north and mid way to the great southern Flinders Ranges. The locals are friendly by day and the town is peaceful by night. Stroll the town. We then recommend you head to the Wirrabara forest and check out the Giant Tree. There is also a steel sculpture trail in town. It is directly across the road from the Wander Inn Wongabirrie and will take you approximately 5 minutes by walking. Head across the green bridge, over the rocky river and into the Wongabirrie Park lands; follow the signs.
  • Thank you Scott for a fantastic stay in your amazing cottage. We have traveled extensively and in many unusual places - but this is one of the most stylish, charming, comfortable and unique properties. You should be very proud of your efforts with the place - brought it back to life in an uber stylish way. Your communication right from the start was fantastic, Andrew did an amazing job hosting us and was so attentive and detailed - a big personal thanks to him; above and beyond. The cottage was so spacious and comfortable and the bath, that is a piece of art!! One of the best baths I have had in the world, aided by some lovely Southern Flinders Shiraz. In addition Wirrabara has so much to see and do; great little town. Those reading this review - do yourself a favor and come and stay in this five star property!! We will be back! Thank you

    Nicholas2020-03-22T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay at Scott’s place. It was the perfect base to explore the southern flinders ranges. The house itself was very luxurious and had everything we needed for a relaxing weekend away. The bath was amazing and we also really appreciated the complimentary bottle of local Shiraz.

  • A hidden gem in rural Australia. The bath is incredible and the small eco touches were such a nice touch. It really seemed like Scott had put in the effort with providing beautiful products and a stylish space.

  • This place is everything. The tub is lovely, especially for a soak after hiking in the Flinders all day. Super quiet, peaceful, and cute little town. The guidebook the host provides is great and I stopped at the at the Stone Hut Bakery for a delicious meat pie on the way out of town. Lots of nice and thoughtful touches like milk in the fridge for tea, shampoo in the shower, and a bottle of local wine on the shelf. My first Airbnb experience in Australia.

Escape corona-crazy in outback calm. 'The Shack' offers peace of mind and anxiety busting chill in the small town of Quorn. It's a small, comfortable styled house with an established native garden. All modern amenities, kitchen and bathroom are set up for self-catering. You'll love the wide streets, amazing evening light, sleepy neighbourhood feel and proximity to National Parks, hikes, mountain bike tracks, desert mountains and non-gentrified Aussie pubs. Pichi Richi steam train is a must-do!
Gracefully and simply furnished with good light and air. Wooden floors + down lights + ceiling fans Renovated 1950s tin clad cottage with character Modern kitchen + bathroom Original fireplace + wood stove Big native garden Shady verandas Warm in winter, cool in summer Rainwater -run 5 mins walk from IGA supermarket, pubs and Pichi Richi Train Station 10% discount at Quandong Cafe if you mention the secret passcode 😃
Quorn is a small, pretty country town 4 hrs north of Adelaide in the heart of the Flinders ranges. It's a popular film location for many Aussie movies like Breaker Morant, The Last Ride, Picnic at Hanging Rock and more. The town has load of massive old trees, surrounded by hills and is a neat and tidy place, very quiet and clean with fantastic old architecture in the small town. Quorn is home to Pichi Richi Railway, a unique steam train that runs to Port Augusta seasonally mainly on weekends and school holidays. It's nestled in the dramatic hills and old mountain ranges of the Flinders Ranges, which just get better the further north you go ( Hawker, Parachilna - great pub, and Flinders Ranges National Park). It's a self-drive tourism town during winter, but without the commercial vibe. The longer you stay the more you appreciate unwinding and slowing down to the great big peacefulness that lives in the hills, here. 30 kms drive west of Port Augusta 30 kms north of Wilmington and 60 north of Melrose if you plan to do mountain bike riding in Mt Remarkable NP. I recommend Over the Edge bike shop for more info and Bartagunyah trails (very cool, long single 'goat' track on the station, more accessible for non-technical riders, but still challenging enough to keep it interesting) Other places to note: The Quorn Rural Traders for hardware (QRT) Not open Sundays Emily's Bistro for unique dining experience Quandong Cafe - do quandong pies - a MUST local delicacy/ bush food Outdoor town pool open in summer Visitor Info Centre opposite the IGA IGA has the ATM Good spot to stay between Adelaide and Oodnadatta Track/Birdsville Track journeys Can get windy here, this makes it really cold, bring your fleeces/beanie Beautiful sunsets, birds, wildlife like eagles, hawks, kangaroos and many emus Yep, there's a golf course.
  • Susans home is much more stylish than the first Picture tells. There is everything you need also for a longer stay. Highly recommended House.

  • Everything about this home is in the outback in a relaxing setting. The home and town are so wonderful we are going back tomorrow for three more nights. A great place to come back to after exploring the Flinders Ranges. The backyard has the most amazing birds. The bed is also very comfy for a good nights rest.

Best Snapper fishing spot in Australia, great crabbing area and King George Whiting. During April to August the Great Cuttlefish migration is on and to see them is truly amazing.
As a general rule you might see 1 or 2 people during your stay. (Unless its Easter/Christmas/new years eve.) then you may see 10 people in 2 days!! The HMAS Whyalla is a land locked ship just before you get to Whyalla. Its worth a visit.
  • Excellent views and modern spotlessly clean house with all the necessities ready to arrive and relax. Just note that there is no Washer/dryer so if staying for a longer period or working that you need to allow for doing washing over in Whyalla, about 25mins drive south. Very relaxed vibe and a host (Chris) who tries to prove for guests requirements. Would stay again for work or with family/friends for an escape.

  • Enjoyed my stay. Even had Netflix to chill out in the evening. I would highly recommend

    Carl2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • The room is very large and well appointed, the bed is comfortable, and the shared bathroom (shared only with other guests; I was the only guest when I stayed; the only one using the bathroom) is also very large and well appointed. Everything was super clean. Even though I checked in in the evening of New Year's Eve, Dori greeted me upon my arrival. Walking distance to everything in Port Germein, including the famous pier. A bit pricey for a bedroom with shared bath, but a great place to stay.

    Marc2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • We can highly recommend Vagabond. Everything was very nice, the neat room, the breakfast (egg, cereal, coffe, tee, tuna fish, ham, cheese, peanutbutter and different kind of marmalade). The location is perfect near the ocean. We had a great stay. After 8 hours in the car I also had the massage and i do recommend it.

  • The retreat was amazing for our group of 10, plenty of beds and space. Breathtaking views of the bay from the back porch. Already planning our next trip back before we had walked out the door.

Looking for something spacious and a bit different? Then you will love the Savings Bank of South Australia - Old Quorn Branch (SBSA). Located in the historic heart of Quorn, it's perfect accommodation for a family or a group of friends. You will have the whole bank to yourselves. The spacious SBSA has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchenette, dining and two lounge rooms. Plenty of room.
SA State Heritage Listed, this beautiful spacious SBSA building was one of Quorn's most important regional banks, located close to the Quorn railway station and Visitor Information Centre, Post Office, local craft shop, cafes, pubs, butcher, supermarket, hairdresser and laundrette. The township has a rich historical past and due to it’s location Quorn is a very interesting town to spend a few days discovering. Quorn provides an ideal base for exploring the historical Pichi Richi Railway, the region and the Flinders Ranges.
Choice of local pubs all offering food, coffee shops, supermarket, the historic Pichi Richi Railway, Quorn Railway station and the PRR Museum are all in walking distance of the Savings Bank of South Australia (SBSA) Old Quorn Branch. The native Powell Gardens are located at the end of First Street, where you can enjoy seeing the arid vegetation of the area. Well worth a visit if you enjoy horticulture and wildlife. We suggest you take a few days to discover Quorn and its surrounds, as there is so much to see and do. Our website lists many of the local attractions including the historic Pichi Richi Railway and other local town activities. We highly recommend you arrange a visit to the PRR railway workshops and also the museum (inside the Quorn station). The recently renovated local swimming pool is worth a visit (especially in summer) and opening hours are available from the Flinders Ranges Visitor Information Centre or from the Council office. There is also a racetrack, airport and golf course in the town.
  • We highly recommend this property. It is spacious, comfortable, clean and well appointed. Centrally located to everything that Quorn has to offer. Great communication with both owner and caretaker made it hassle free and very welcoming.

  • Fascinating historic building, well appointed and perfect for our small extended family.

    Kate2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • Great location, accommodation matched exactly with the promoted information although we did find the kitchen work-space a little cramped for five of us to eat breakfast and prepare lunches prior to the day's hiking.

    Stuart2019-07-09T00:00:00Z
  • Great accomodation for our family group, comfortable and cosy .

    Judie2019-06-02T00:00:00Z
  • This is an amazing place. Central and so beautiful. We had an amazing time and would unreservedly recommend it to anyone wanting a unique stay in the Flinders.

    Melissa2018-10-01T00:00:00Z
  • We loved staying at the historic State Bank Building - a beautiful terrace home with warm communal spaces and big comfy beds. Central heating throughout and electric blankets. A short walk to local cafes and pubs and a short drive from the beautiful Flinders Ranges - a perfect spot. Highly recommended.

    Michelle2018-06-29T00:00:00Z
  • Great little part of history, and ideal spot to explore the Flinders Ranges.

    Shannon2018-06-27T00:00:00Z
  • We had a really great stay at the bank! The kids just loved the huge place and the stairs and cellar. It was unseasonally hot outside but inside was perfect. The only area that was small was the kitchen, but it was so well equipped it more than made up for that. Great location too, close to cafes, supermarket and pubs a short walk. Quorn Cafe was a few doors up with delicious coffee and food. Catering really well for gluten free. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again and recommended it to everyone.

  • All in all, a great Aussie pub accommodation experience. A comfortable room in a central location. There was access to a clean, shared bathroom, basic kitchen facilities, a small communal living area and a pub downstairs. Would stay again.
