In Halcottsville, the land becomes flatter and more farm-like. Better known to locals as the Round Barn, you'll find fresh veggies and fruit and cheese here. If you're lucky and arrive by 9:30 or 10 a.m., you'll find fresh red trout here: the best fish in all of the Catskills. Fiddlers usually play all morning into the afternoon.

A super sweet cafe with great tea sandwiches and bruschetta, an awesome little girl who helps her mom serve and a great outdoor deck to eat on and check out Pine Hill's Main Street.

While there are abundant trails pretty much everywhere near us, the Big Indian Wilderness is great for primitive, back country hikes.

It's a really pretty beach and lake with a snack bar and showers. You can rent a paddle boat. Have a picnic. Wade in. There are lifeguards on duty, too. Walk in from less than a mile from our home for $3 or take a car for $10. You go through a charming covered barn bridge to enter.

Shopping

A little expensive, but a quick stop for gas, laundry, groceries and a prepared snack like chicken fingers. Stay away from the breakfast sandwiches, though.

Entertainment & Activities

Phoenicia is the little big town in the area. You'll find various options for food from inexpensive (Sportsman's Alamo) to pricey. There are a few art galleries, a Catholic church, and a theater for plays. You'll also find the Town Tinker tube rental to ride along the Esopus, fun on hot days.

The other little big town in the area, Margaretville has a little bit of everything. The Bun n' Cone is the cheap eats place with pizza for $1 a slice. The big grocery store is the best in the whole area. Beyond the grocery store in the big field, they often have events like the popular Cauliflower Festival, this year on 9/24.
