Amethystine Eco Cottage Guide to the Daintree

Sightseeing

Daintree Entomological Museum is a world class private collection of worldwide rare and local beetles, moths and butterflies. Personally I find insects fascinating as long as they are not biting me. Seeing is believing, it is quite a remarkable collection! To get there from Amethystine cottage, turn left onto Maple, turn left on to cape tribulation road past the school and Cooper creek and turn left into Turpentine road. The gates are large spider webs 200m up the road. http://www.daintreemuseum.com.au

Daintree Entomological Museum is a world class private collection of world wide rare and local beetles, moths and butterflies. Personally I find all critters fascinating. Seeing is believing, it is quite a remarkable collection! We were lucky enough to get to see the caterpillar just before it cocooned to become the largest moth in the world live. Yes this Hercules moth lives in the Daintree. Also at the museum is a creek, they have done some landscaping and is a lovely spot for a picnic lunch. Not for the feint of heart. It is rated as a medium/difficult walking track. Allow the whole day. It goes up and down and up and down and then up. Amazing views at the top, they made it worth the effort and a great spot to eat a packed lunch. Telstra mobile reception too!! Not toilets or rubbish facilities, take all your rubbish home. Do not stray off the path. Wear sensible footwear. Best done in the dry season (April - November). National parks recommends you let someone know you are going on the walk. To get there, drive just past cape tribulation and you'll see the trail go from the road on the left. There are a couple of parking spots across the road on the right. Please read the national park link below. https://parks.des.qld.gov.au/parks/daintree-mount-sorrow/about

Snorkel the reef. They only take a max of 25 people at a time to minimise the impact on the reef. There is a morning or an afternoon cruise. I'd only snorkelled once before and this was the best experience. You can go at your own pace and its not crowded. They have noodles to help keep you afloat. So beautiful, we saw a massive sea turtle. Take snacks to eat on the boat, all that swimming makes you hungry. The boat trip is 20 min and leaves from the beach at cape tribulation. Take something to wrap yourself in for the trip home, I felt cold after being in the water for a few hours. https://www.oceansafari.com.au/tours/great-barrier-reef/
