Sightseeing

Just the otherside of the river are beautiful walking trails and bike tracks along the Yarra Bend Park. Cross the Walmer at footbridge (the bridge you can see from the apartment balcony), and follow the unpaved path on the left for a beautiful walk along side the river. Or, walk to the top of Walmer Street, through the public golf course for some wonderful views westward over the city. Perfect for sunset viewing. Studley Grounds Cafe is a relaxed and spacious Cafe overlooking the golf course (but has a noisy interior).

Once awarded the best book shop in the world, Lygon Street Carlton is where there store first originated a few decades ago. Isles of wonderful books and music to pour over supported by staff who know their stuff. A great way to end a meander on Lygosn street, Carlton (Melbourne's 'little Italy') where you can find great gelato, pasta, pizza and gourmet foods....Also, Cinema Nova which is across the road is a great Art House cinema.

My favourite local Cafe which feels like a second home. Beautiful courtyard seating, delicious and healthy food, excellent coffee, friendly service.

A craft brewery in a warehouse with great wood fired pizza from a caravan kitchen. Relaxed and buzzing vibe for a chilled night out. Just a five minute walk from the apartment

If you fancy a walk along the river path before your morning coffee, then follow the trail around to the right (down stream) until you reach North Street. There are two very good coffee Roasters there (Cafe Veneziano is the biggest) but Maker Coffee is my preferred. Try the Avocado toast. Beware, Maker attracts many cyclists so it can get busy on the weekend. Just next door is Philippas Bakery outlet where you can get less that perfect but still delicious bread and baked goods.

Supermarkets and food stores

This is an excellent Fruit and Veg store with a gourmet deli and specialist foods. It's in the nearby Victoria Gardens Shopping centre at the far end opposite Coles Supermarket. There is also a great fishmonger in a nearby shop.

If the area is open for access, take the stairs to the roof top for spectacular views to the bay and also looking up Melbourne's central street, Swanston walk where an architectural portrait of William Barak, one of the nineteenth century's most famous Aboriginal land rights activists appears. Plenty of contentious discussions could be had over the juxtaposition demonstrated in these architectural bookends of the Naarm/Melbourne! Folloy up your visit to the shrine with a frolic or explore in The Children's Garden at the Observatory Gate of the Botanical Gardens. The Observatory cafe is a good place to stop and refresh if needed!
