Burnham, one of the leading American architects of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as US architecture transitioned from low rise buildings to skyscrapers, is probably best known not for his houses but for his later works on a grander scale. These included leading the creation of the White City at the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago, designing a number of early highrises including the Flatiron Building in New York City, and authoring the Chicago Plan of 1909.
