Around September and April, the Vaux Swifts stop here for a brief stay along their migration route and one of the locations they sleep is the old chimney at this elementary school. In September, there is typically (not current due to pandemic) an event held where the community gathers to watch the birds prepare to settle in for the night to sleep. They engage in a stunning visual display where they encircle the chimney and drop in at sunset. You may see groups of them flying around in the early evening during these times of year.

City/town information

Bavarian themed city about an hour East of Index (over Steven's Pass). Lots of cute shopping, yummy food, art, and wineries. Good place for slowly tubing the river as it is hot and dry in the Summer and warms up more quickly than Index in the Spring.

Index is a tiny town nestled in between incredible mountains with a river and train tracks running through it. It has a cute little public park with tennis court, basketball hoops and grassy area. There is a small general store and a historical museum in town. Every Summer, Index has an Art's Festival featuring local artists, poetry and music.

City advice

Book before you go

Anticipate loud train noise in Index

Train tracks run diagonal through the town. Trains come through town at all hours of the day/night and can be heard at least a couple times over night/in the early morning and at various times throughout the day. If you listen closely, you can hear the difference between the commuter train that passes through once in the morning and evening and the freight trains.
Book before you go

Local wildlife

Spotted in and around Index - bobcats, cougars, black bears, coyotes, raccoons, bald eagles, hawks, owls, bats, Steller Jays, Robins, Starlings, crows, deer, salmon, and other various freshwater fish in the river. Please plan accordingly, do not leave food outside, in vehicle or dispose of in any garbage cans/dumpsters in town.
Getting around

Index gets winter weather

In the winter season, Index is likely to get some snowy weather. At the Rosehill Manor, we do our best to snow blow our driveway and keep walks clear, however access to our driveway begins at the end of 5th St at the bottom of the hill. 5th St management is the responsibility of the town of Index. Index is a small town with 1 maintenance person and it can take some time for them to arrive to take care of 5th St. Parking in town tends to be limited during these events as well.
What to pack

Check the forecast and bring rain gear if needed

We have umbrellas available for use at the manor. The annual rainfall of 73.1 inches in Index means that it is wetter than most places in Washington. November is the rainiest month in Index with 20.9 days of rain, and August is the driest month with only 6.7 rainy days. There are 183.7 rainy days annually in Index, which is one of the rainiest places in Washington.
