You can take a ferry from Beaufort to Cape Lookout or you can drive out to Harker's Island and take a ferry from there (it's a shorter ferry ride and a bit less expensive). Once you are on the island you can rent an ATV to explore or simply walk and enjoy the lighthouse or the beaches. The Point is supposed to be one of the best places to find whelks and other sea treasures!

This is a great place to go for a day of exploring. We spend almost every day at Fort Macon. You can check out the fort itself which features a small indoor museum as well as exhibits and information throughout the fort. There are guided tours that you can also go on and a small gift shop. In addition, Fort Macon has a 3.2 mile trail called the Elliot Coues Trail which takes you through a maritime forest and over some beautiful dunes with incredible views of the ocean (just make sure you wear lots of bug spray!). You can go fishing on the inlet or near the jetty or just enjoy a day at the beach. The beach access at Fort Macon has a very large bath house with showers and a snack bar. There are also picnic shelters and lots of places to park for free!
